Summoned to another world to serve as the Spear Hero, Motoyasu Kitamura is a pitiful young man who eventually finds himself only able to love filolials. But after being fatally injured in battle, Motoyasu wakes up yet again in the exact circumstances of when he was first summoned. It turns out that his spear possesses an ability known as Time Reversal, allowing him to do an In-Universe Save Scumming. With his stats unaffected by the reset and his memories intact, Motoyasu decides to continue being the Spear Hero, but this time redoing his journey with the knowledge and skills he had to once again see the smile of Filo, the filolial that he loves more than any other.

The Reprise of the Spear Hero (槍の勇者のやり直し, Yari no Yuusha no Yarinaoshi?) manga and light novel by Aneko Yusagi and spin-off series to The Rising of the Shield Hero. The official English translation of the series is published by One Peace Books.

Beware of unmarked spoilers.

The Reprise of the Spear Hero provides examples of:

  • Adaptational Intelligence: With everything he suffered through in the original timeline, Motoyasu's hindsight and experience has completely gotten rid of his Idiot Hero traits and made him a Stock Light-Novel Hero played (mostly) straight.
  • Adaptational Nice Guy: As a result of Motoyasu preventing the False Rape Accusation and the ensuing trauma that would sour his personality, Naofumi remains the optimistic Nice Guy that he was at the start.
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul:
    • Knowing Naofumi was innocent all along, Motoyasu declares complete loyalty to Naofumi here.
    • Knowing that King Aultcray and Princess Malty are evil from the first timeline, Motoyasu immediately gives them murderous looks when he encounters them in the new timeline.
  • Alternate Self: Motoyasu, besides trying to unfuck the world's history and protecting Naofumi/'Father' from harm, also embarks on one man's hunt to locate and then court his beloved Filo, not realizing that due to total derailment of the chain of events that led to her hatching and growth, there's no Filo in his world. Sakura, who hatches from the same egg as Filo, takes her place. Filo proper finally appears in the final timeline, after Motoyasu decides to let things happen as in the original series.
  • And This Is for...: In order to test the conditions of his Time Master powers, he kills Itsuki and later Ren, stating that it's for Naofumi.
  • Ascended Extra: The Lizard Man slave Beloukas had. In loops where Motoyasu gets Naofumi to buy him instead of Raphtalia, he grows to worship Motoyasu and gains shape-changing powers.
  • Bait-and-Switch: There are a lot of these scenes.
  • Berserker Tears: When Motoyasu finally realizes who Tact is, he goes ballistic killing him with his strongest attack, and trying to demolish Tact's posse with tears down his eyes.
  • Black Comedy:
    • Motoyasu causally kills Ren and Itsuki without batting an eye in order to test the conditions of his Time Master powers.
    • When Naofumi meets the Hero of the Claw, one of Motoyasu's spears kills the hero mid-speech. Everyone's reaction to it spells it out.
  • Censored for Comedy: Tact's face is completely blurred out from Motoyasu's preceptive, due to the former traumatizing him with all that he did.
  • Celibate Hero: Much like the original Naofumi, Motoyasu is all-but immune to being seduced. Here though, it's because all women look and sound like pigs to him due to the events of the original story.
  • Foreshadowing: Motoyasu due to his familiarity with filolials is able to distinguish scent, egg type, egg feel, etc. and he continuously smells Filo despite her not existing in the different time loops. It's because Sakura takes her place when the events of the main story get altered.
  • He-Man Woman Hater: When a trio of girls offers to join Motoyasu's party, he immediately begs Naofumi to take them instead due to the trauma from the original timeline still rendering him unable to stomach their presence.
  • Late-Arrival Spoiler:
    • In the manga version, Motoyasu and Naofumi discuss the possibility of Sakura being Filo with as much subtlety as a brick to the face.
    • One loop spoils the reveal that Keel is a girl fairly early on, since Motoyasu can only see girls as pigs. In the manga, this is even less subtle, as Keel is drawn like all the other pig-faced women.
  • Lighter and Softer: As a result of Motoyasu preventing Naofumi's name from being sullied, the events of the story are never as dark as they become in canon.... Or at least until enough timelines have passed and Motoyasu realizes that the only way to obtain Filo is to let the events happen as the main series.
  • New Game Plus: Motoyasu has all of his upgrades and spears from the original timeline, giving a significant leg-up compared to the other three Heroes.
  • Peggy Sue: Motoyasu was mentally sent back to the moment when he was originally summoned to Melromarc.
  • Through the Eyes of Madness: As this story is from the Motayasu's POV after his Trauma Conga Line in the original timeline, he sees all women (barring a select few and his filolials) as oinking pigs and needs someone to translate what they're saying.
  • Time Master: The power to go back in time is one of the Legendary Spear's magical abilities. The condition is though, if any of the four heroes die, he gets sent back to the moment they were all summoned.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: Motoyasu, while still an insane Cloudcuckoolander for the most part, has come a long way from being the self-centered Jerkass that he was in canon.
