Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Complete Monster Cleanup Thread

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Rarely post here but might as well say: I deleted this from YMMV.Kitboga:

  • Complete Monster: Averted in the case of most scammers - as unsavoury as they can be, most of the time they're mere peons working for the even more corrupt people in charge.
    • This trope is unfortunately and chillingly played completely straight with Steve, the scammer who set new records for just how far a scammer's rage can fly off the handle. While this rage is undeniably amusing, the fact that he punctuated his almighty tantrum with phrases such as "I WILL RAPE YOUR FAMILY! I WILL KILL YOUR FAMILY!" and "I WILL SHOOT YOUR HUSBAND, POINT BLANK IN HIS HEAD." is a sobering thought. This man exemplifies everything bad about scammers and what they are known to do: Skipping past the obvious criminal elements in common with other scammers, not only does he consider himself so superior than the Westerners he targets that he feels he can threaten to molest and even murder his victims and their loved ones, his fragile ego comes to the fore the moment a man begins speaking to him (in this case, Edna's husband), resulting in him shying away and becoming timid until the moment he's out of the picture. It's cathartic as all hell to see Kit expertly break Steve down, completely shattering any control he thought he had.

Yeah... no. That episode was quite funny (if a bit unsettling due to how angry the guy got), but Kitboga is a real life person scambaiting real life people, so... no.

[up] Having seen the movie years ago, the Interrogator's entry could use some reworking. Something like this?

  • The Interrogator is an ice cold sadist tasked with getting a children's author to admit she put anti-government messages in her stories. Subjecting her to all sorts of horrific, increasingly painful tortures and psychological mind games to get her to crack, the Interrogator is also implied to have molested her as a child.

Also here are my write-ups.

  • Robot Ninja (1989)
    • Gody Sanchez is the leader of a gang of punks who prowl the town raping and murdering anybody they please. Encountered by the Robot Ninja, Gody holds a child hostage and accidentally kills him while running away. Happily mutilating Robot Ninja’s claw wrist while he’s pinned down by her men, Gody later tortures and kills Dr. Goodknight under the impression he was Robot Ninja. Encountering Robot Ninja one final time in the junk yard, Gody runs over a cop patrolling the place before brutally maiming the vigilante till he’s near death.
    • Buddy Revelle is Gody’s murderous, rape-happy right hand who participates the most in his boss’s crime sprees. Upon being encountered by the Robot Ninja, Revelle tries to rape a woman during the commotion, leaving his team to sort out the masked vigilante before becoming Robot Ninja’s first kill.

Yes to the rewrites and while I haven't seen the film there mir, just as a suggestion for whoever does the rewrite: list out the specific ways he torments her—without getting into unnecessarily edgy details—and modify the awkward end to just emphasize that he claims to be her rapist to torment her, we don't the "Btw he probably didn't."

Agree with 43, I think listing out some of the ways the Interrogator actually does the torturing will beef up his write-up. Jackie's potential one is good, just feel it needs a lil more meat to it.

Alright, now, to continue what seems to be a trend of me recommending cuts in recent months lol I think Udai Taxim needs to go on the chopping block. Here's his entry:

  • ** "Black Dog Serenade": Udai Taxim is a psychopathic assassin and the Arch-Enemy of Jet Black. Introduced after having slaughtered a group of guards on his prison ship to escape, Udai goes on to kill the pilots of the craft. Engaging the police with his gang when they come to stop him, Udai continues his killing spree, having his men wipe out the cops' attack force. Confronted by Jet, Udai reveals that years ago he conspired with Jet's former cop-partner to kill Jet, which led to Jet losing his arm in a shootout, before Udai attacks and tries to kill him once again.

Alright, so, first things first? I want to clarify that this write-up has a few errors, namely:

  • Udai isn't Jet's Arch-Enemy—he only crops up in the one episode, he's built up as a bad threat...then he's promptly killed at the end so Jet can confront his actual most personal foe.

  • Udai doesn't kill the pilots. Another prisoner does, and Udai responds by killing said prisoner for being a hothead and killing their only hostages.

  • Lastly, saying Udai "has his men wipe out the police task force" is pretty much explicitly allocating more responsibility to Udai than he actually has. All of the prisoners work together to concoct a scheme and carry it out, Udai isn't treated as their "leader" in any way, shape or form, even if he's the most threatening presence.

So, Udai's rapsheet amounts to: Killing a corridor full of prison guards that amount to less than 10 victims, killing a rampaging fellow inmate, scheming with the others to blow up some cop ships, and bragging his part in luring Jet to a trap where Jet's partner betrayed him and shot his arm off. All of this lead to the original effortposter claiming Udai had the "second highest bodycount in the show".

And now, let's compare Udai to some of the other villains in the franchise not named Vicious and see how that claim holds up.

  • Mad Pierrot kills his way through an ISSP facility then becomes a Serial Killer of ISSP officials and their security guards. He kills a minimum of two dozen people.

  • Vincent Volaju releases a bioplague that kills dozens of people, betrays and murders several of his partners, and plans to wipe out millions of people.

  • Maria Murdoch massacres a restaurant and kills almost a dozen people, transforms people into ravenous monkeys for experiments, subjects one of her own sons to said fate, and tries to use a virus to reduce an entire planet of living people to mere monkeys.

  • Wen kidnaps and paralyzes men into catatonia to keep them wheelchair bound and barely alive for years just so he has a cover story for his youthful appearance, and murders anyone who tries to rescue the men from this horrible fate.

So right off the bat, no, Udai doesn't have the second highest bodycount in the show, and he doesn't come close to having some of the worst crimes. He's just an escaped prisoner whose victims only amount to cops and prison guards looking to lock him back up on death row, and while he's a brutal, cruel mofo with few resources, he just isn't particularly notable. The episode itself shows that the other inmates totally cheer on his killing of the guards while killing guards of their own, so the only real unique thing Udai's got here is the skill to rack up a higher killcount of the prison staff.

And so I end yet another long-winded breakdown to simply say: I don't think Udai reaches the high heinous standard even as a Monster of the Week (which all of the above are as well except Vincent who's the movie villain), and needs to be cut.

Thoughts?

Tonight I dine on monkey soup.

Yes! Cut Udai... he's almost a non-entity with this wiki somehow grasping to the faint bit of characterization he's got and (honestly minimal) rap-sheet and playing it up for more than it's worth. My esteemed colleague has laid much of it out but just to reiterate: Udai is a criminal who shares a past with Jet, he's not even the most personal antagonist in the episode, with Jet's ex-partner basically just using him and as Rav said, he's just one of the prisoners fucking shit up to dodge their execution. He's presented as The Dreaded but we never get enough detail on his past crimes to make anything of it and he's not really leading the bunch, many of the others cheer him on for killing some of the guards, many of them kill guards themselves and there's a much more grounded prisoner who gets killed part way through the episode but seems much more to be the "brains" of the operation, a hierarchy is being misattributed here and it's not communicating his crimes accurately. He objectively flunks the HS, great recheck there buddy and definite go to this guy!
