Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Complete Monster Cleanup Thread

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Okay here are my write-ups:

  • High School Of The Dead fan fic World of the Dead:
    • Dr. Genzo Hikke has a morbid obsession with studying zombies. To supplement this obsession Dr. Hikke turns the majority of his hospital staff into zombies and uses the hospital to lure numerous people in before turning them into zombie, already claiming a high number of walking corpses to experiment on. He would also forcibly restrain Takashi Komuro and Saeko Busujima, stripping the latter completely naked, before attempting to infect them with the zombie virus to see who would turn first.
    • Koichi Shido is just as vile here as he was canon. Crashing his bus while leaving the Takagi estate, Koichi would leave all his injured teenaged students to be devoured by a zombie hoard. Forming the Black Sun cult, Koichi would have his initiates fight zombies unarmed, and keep them trapped in his compound should they survive. Koichi would maintain his control over his followers by brainwashing them with drugs and have them perform mass orgies; those that don't follow Koichi's rules are imprisoned and subjected to beatings for a week before getting fed to zombies should they still refuse to submit. When zombies break in to the compound, Koichi abandons his entire cult to be devoured while he attempts to escape on his own.

[tup] Schneir.

So, everyone, I want to open a Favorite (and Least Favorite) Complete Monster thread to see what people reply with. However, the last thread that was made for this topic was shut down due to people constantly listing characters that were not CMs and basically derailing the thread. Of course, we do not want such a thing to happen again.

So I have an idea. I will open the thread, and I will allow the mods to thump any post that lists a non-CM character. This way, the thread will not be derailed like the other one was. To make this clear, I will list this in bold:

  • Please only list characters who have been officially approved by the Complete Monster cleanup thread. Any posts that do not follow this rule will be considered off-topic and thumped.

So, what do you think?

Recipe for disaster.

EDIT: Upon further investigation, definite recipe for disaster. I've found several other "Complete Monster" forums, and they've all been shut down specifically because Fighteer got sick of having to micro-manage them all when only one dedicated thread is necessary.

[up][up]A thread for such a trivial question sounds kind of pointless. You can just do a group PM if you want to ask a question like that.

Wait... group PM? Hang on while I PM you to ask you what this mysterious new thing is.

Anyway, I have another candidate coming up. Excuse me whilst I make the effortpost.

EDIT:

I'm a few pages late but I will bring it up again, concerning Wesker.

Either we need to change his entry so it's simple in the games section of the Resident Evil page or we need to find out what spin-offs and other forms of canon or official media Wesker counts in.

Does his film counterpart count?

[up]Unsure.

So, second belated Halloween EP. He is also from a fan work, but he is an original character, and I am MUCH more certain that he qualifies.

What's the work?

UNKNOWN is a Fan Sequel to OFF, and this post contains heavy spoilers for both. (Seriously, if you have not played OFF yet, go ahead- it is a brilliant, surreal, and subversive RPG experience, and it is freeware.)

Taking place after the Batter ending, in which the player sided with the Batter and destroyed what was left of the world, it stars Zacharie the merchant as he teams up with the player, the Judge, the remorseful ghost of the Batter, and a cat called Charlotte, to restore the world. But it will not be easy, for an evil entity wants to conquer the remains of the world for himself...

Who is Seneca? What has he done?

Seneca is an original character who serves as the Big Bad. A tiny little fox who is a descendant of the demonic Secretaries, he wants to rebuild the world in his own image. He confronts Zacharie twice in battle, then flees. When Zacharie and Charlotte, the mysterious cat calling herself the Observer, head to Zone 2, they find that Seneca has already taken it over, with signs demanding everyone worship him. Nothing too special, and he seems too laughable and self-important to take seriously. Overall, a pretty Harmless Villain.

...Until Charlotte confronts him in his lair, and after he creepily flirts with her, he... well, the camera cuts off at this point, but given that when we find her next she is bruised, beaten, and traumatized, it is heavily implied that he raped her.

But that is only the beginning. When the heroes go to his base in Zone 3, he has a handful of nasty surprises. He separates the party, then disguises himself as Valerie, the Judge's dead brother whom he was grieving over very much, to get his guard down and brutally attack him. Then he traps Ghost Batter in a room from where there is no escape, taunting him about how he will be trapped for all eternity since he is a ghost and cannot die.

Finally, he brings down the player/puppeteer themself (or creates a puppet in their likeness- it is rather ambiguous). He then challenges the player to go through his dungeon. First, he shows the puppeteer his new puppets he made for them- heavily distorted versions of the main characters who are horribly mangled and suffering (think Dick Hardly and the Powerpuff Girls Xtreme aka his disturbing knockoff clones).

He shows the Puppeteer into a room with a tiny dot, where he then zaps them with green lighting. This is his room where he zaps the souls out of those who stand on the dot, so he can consume the soul and gain power. In the demo, Seneca- who was actually Affably Evil back then- told Zacharie that he needed to sacrifice himself to give his life energy, so that Seneca can reset time and bring the world back to normal. In the full game, which takes place afterward, the scene basically states that this was a lie- and, by extension, implies that his Affably Evil behavior in the demo was a front to get Zacharie to lower his guard.

The puppeteer is then able to enter a part of the facility with some of the other clones, thanks to Seneca's scientist, Louis, secretly helping them enter. When Seneca realizes this, he kills Louis. Then one of the clones comes out, calling him Papa, and clearly having an affection for him. Seneca expresses disdain for him before killing him too. He then says that he regrets bringing the clones into the world, because of how stupid and annoying they all are.

Zach, one of the clones, tags along with the puppeteer and mentions at own point how Seneca has a tendency to physically abuse his creations for whatever reason.

Finally, Zacharie finds and battles Seneca. After defeating him, Zacharie is ready to finish off Seneca.

What happens from here on depends on the ending. However, I will describe what happens in the main ending. Zacharie wants to kill Seneca, but the puppeteer wants to pursue justice some other way. Then Zacharie uncharacteristically snaps and becomes furious at the puppeteer. Somehow, Seneca, in the middle of the fight or somewhere else, made Zacharie Brainwashed and Crazy, and for his final act of evil has Zacharie try to kill the puppeteer in one last battle. If Zacharie is beaten, he snaps out of it, and Seneca is presumably imprisoned somewhere, his reign of terror having come to an end.

Heinousness Standard?

His main competition is the Batter, the Big Bad of the original game who destroyed the whole world and did it piece by piece. The thing is that the Batter was very cold and impersonal with all the killing he did, never seeing it as anything but his sacred mission to purify the world and never going beyond murder. Even his killing of Hugo, his adopted son who created him to be his new father, was not something he enjoyed so much as something he felt was his duty, to free his son from the suffering that is life. Seneca, by contrast, clearly takes sadistic pleasure from his kills, is implied to have raped the small Charlotte, created mangled clones of the main characters and then abused and killed them, turned Zacharie against the puppeteer, and did all this for fun. The Batter's motive? To free everyone from what he saw as a corrupt world. Seneca's motive? To rule over said corrupt world and torture everyone in it 4 teh lulz.

In short, the Batter killed more people, but he did it quickly and with as little pain as he could manage, for a noble (in his mind) purpose, and in this game expresses remorse and does a Heel–Face Turn. Seneca psychologically tormented his still numerous victims and used them as his playthings, and killed quite a bit of people himself, just for his own fun, and even outright states he does not feel bad for any of it.

Mitigating Qualities?

He states at one point that he was 'crossing more than a few lines' with the horrific results of his attempt to create life, and understands why the player rejected his gift. This seems like an Even Evil Has Standards moment.

But almost immediately afterwards, he says, word-for-word (emphasis mine):

However, I will not lie to you. I don't really feel bad about it. If you aren't willing to accept a gift when someone tried their absolute hardest to make it for you, that's your fault.

So yeah, Even Evil Has Standards is subverted here.

As for his origin, he was originally created as a failsafe in case the world was destroyed- he would serve as the new guardian. However, he was born too early, distorting him heavily. Now, this may seem like an agency issue. Except-

  • The only thing that was distorted was his physical body, not his mind. So it does not impair his agency in any way.
  • He was born too early because he got impatient and intentionally hopped out of his womb quicker than he was supposed to, so it was his fault that he ended up like that.
  • The origin comes from a wiki entry of dubious canonicity, so it might not even be all that accurate.

Conclusion?

I say he keeps.

[up]It is not just that the Batter did not enjoy what he did. The Batter may have killed more people, but he did not psychologically torture them. He did not rape a little cat. He did not create twisted clones and then abuse and kill large numbers of them.

Seneca had lower-ish resources, but he did the most with what he had, and what he did is far more evil than what the Batter did.

Sure to Seneca.

I THINK I cleaned up Wiseman. If anyone who knows the game wants to fix it, feel free.

  • Metal Gear Ac!d2: Wiseman instigated a horrific event known as the Praulia Massacre: Wiseman felt that the data about the Model 2 soldiers was insufficient, so he had technicians provoke said soldiers into going berserk, causing the deaths of 10,000 people. He then sent the Model 3 soldiers in to eliminate the Model 2 soldiers, knowing that eliminating their brethren hurt them. Wiseman was also responsible for the death of Dr. Thomas Koppelthorn's wife, resulting in Koppelthorn's later actions. In addition, he had Venus shoot Snake because the latter had outlived his usefulness, resulting in Snake's amnesia.

I'm more on a weaker and cautious yes on Seneca given I didn't even know the work yet. That and when someone brought up a good point against his inclusion, that's where the problem lies.
