Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Complete Monster Cleanup Thread

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

[tup] Burke and Beast Killer

Just finished the Netflix film The Silence... wasn't great, but the main human antagonist MAY be CM material... then again, he doesn't pop up until the last third, so... I dunno. Maybe, maybe not.

Read "Ghost Stories of Remnant" here.

Mmm. I'll abstain on Gus. Sounds more bark than bite with a pretty limited body count—not sure if he actually reaches the level needed for "pure evil." The clear intent to rape, admittedly, might put him over. I'll sleep on it.

As for the comment on "more complicated than it needs to be," this is the proposal format we've agreed upon over years of discussion and formation of criteria for the trope. The trope's a mess if the definition isn't stringent and everything needs to be overviewed first.

Abstaining on Gus. Are there any other examples of him inciting violence other than killing his cohort and burning the house?

[tup] Beast and Burke.

Just finished reading the Resident Evil canon tie-in manga Heavenly Island. The Big Bad Ensemble is composed of a stereotypical Mad Scientist and a sexy Psycho for Hire. The scientist was The Dragon to Alex Wesker and used the population of an island for his twisted experiments, but that's definately not heinous enough for this franchise. We do get a cameo from Ozwell Spencer; that intrigued me, was he ever proposed here before?

[tup] to Burke

I don't think Oswell Spencer was ever discussed here, but you can EP him if you think he counts.

Anywho been looking at Il Carnefice, and I think there might be an inaccuracy, though nothing that disqualifies him. While he does indeed rape an innocent woman, it's never been said that he forced everyone to watch. other than that everything about Il Carnefice is accurate and he's still very heinous enough to keep. With that here an updated re-write for The Executioner.

  • Project Legacy/Brotherhood: Il Carnefice (''The Executioner") is an executioner in the service of the Borgias who expresses brutality and enthusiasm in his work. Given a list of people to execute by Fiora Cavazza, he tells her a sick joke that she on the execution list leaving her horrified; since Il Carnefice is illiterate, he doesn't go over the list and just executes who he wants, regardless of guilt or innocence, displaying the chopped body parts of his numerous victims to the crowds. He would also rape an innocent women before hanging her and sends his men to kill her grieving husband when he tries to remove her corpse from Il Carnefice's noose.

I'll put this to the Drafts page pronto

[up][up][up] Likely because the game is quite awful. Nah, that's a joke, but it is really bad.

[tup] That Burke. Didn't think we'd get something from the Steel film of all things.

As for Ozwell Spencer, I don't know if he's ever been formally proposed, but he's one of our big examples of how Offscreen Villainy can prevent someone from counting. Do you think this cameo gives him enough?

Yes to Burke (did he...not realize his weapon would reflect off the armor?).

Mir: Nice catch. I've fixed it.

Ah, this rewrite for Viper:

  • Dr. Viper was once Elrod Purvis, a greedy scientist whose plan to sell the Viper Mutagen to the highest bidder ended with his supposed death and subsequent mutation into the evil Viper. In his schemes to destroy Megakat City and replace it with a festering "Megaswamp City", Viper regularly attempts to mutate and murder all he can through his chemical weapons and monsters; painfully transforms one-shot villain Morbulus into a mindless bacteria creature that he sets loose on Megakat City, leading to dozens of deaths, including that of Viper's former colleague Zyme; attempts to drown the entire city in toxic spores; teams up with the aforementioned Dark Kat; and finally floods the city with mutative chemicals in a bid to mutate everyone within the city. Regularly murdering innocents in his attempted conquest and seeing beauty only in the fetid and festering, Dr. Viper was about as remorselessly evil as his sinister appearance would suggest.
I'll add it to the batch, along with these two:
  • Project Legacy/Brotherhood: Il Carnefice (''The Executioner") is an executioner in the service of the Borgias who expresses brutality and enthusiasm in his work. Given a list of people to execute by Fiora Cavazza, he tells her a sick joke that she on the execution list leaving her horrified; since Il Carnefice is illiterate, he doesn't go over the list and just executes who he wants, regardless of guilt or innocence, displaying the chopped body parts of his numerous victims to the crowds. He would also rape an innocent women before hanging her, and sends his men to kill her grieving husband when he tries to remove her corpse from Il Carnefice's noose.
  • Exmortis: Lord Vlaew is a cruel, power-hungry demon lord whose existence predates man and beast. Usurping his brother Azrael and sealing him away in a hellish prison to be tortured for eternity, Vlaew ruled with an iron fist over the lesser entities before being overthrown himself, and ultimately claiming his title of leader of a legion of banished entities he called the Exmortis. Billions of years later, he has Xavier Rehayem's daughter possessed when he translates the rite required to open the gates to the Crimson Realm, leading her father to kill her. When a hunter stumbles across Rehayem's house a century later, he torments him to madness until he submits and becomes the Hand of Repose, ordering the murder of five Soul Bearers to grant the Exmortis passage to Earth, brutally slaughtering most of the human race in the process. Once his legion becomes disposable to him, he manipulates Mr. Hannay—killing him when the job is done—into slaying the Hand of Repose so that he can claim dominion over the Earth Realm himself as a playground of suffering.

Yes to Burke but I'm giving a nay to Gus. Unfortunately, as Scraggle said, he's more bark than bite there, and as a bandit, he would have opportunities to be worse. He only has a body count of one with intent to rape the sisters. In format, I'd be more lenient if he kills other people, but I don't quite think he goes that extra mile.

I'll have a candidate who never got a formal EP to be up for reconsideration, soon after a rewatch.

According to Spencer's folder on the RE5 page he has a Pet the Dog moment in that game. He may still count though depending on weather or not it's an actual example.
