Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Complete Monster Cleanup Thread

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

[tup] Grannark, Big Jim, Shinryu, Eclipse

[tdown] Labby

Cut Amon, man, it's ironic that the Villain Protagonist ends up failing the heinous standard but it is what it is.

Edit: Also, as we draw closer to the release of iZombie season 4 (which has at least one character I've got my eye on), I noticed something: Vaughn, despite having ample discussion, never got formally EP'd. Personally, I don't think it is necessary but would anyone like if I gave him an official effort post after season 4 so people can cast their thoughts?

[down] Uhhhh... it's fine with you if I leave it or it's fine with you if I do an EP? Also, no idea, some dude just posted a writeup for him, people asked so questions and just kinda rolled with it and voted.

EDIT: Sorry. Fine if you do an EP. I'm ALWAYS fine with effortposts for characters who are up but were never effortposted.

Alright, I got a weird candidate again. I may not necessarily think he counts but I think he deserve a real discussion. As this is from the animated movie that I've watched months or years ago (And sorry Ravok if I took this first) and I have seen several scenes from it. And yes, despite it's confusing nature, The story is still understandable to follow and without further ado.....Let's begin the EP shall we.

What's the Work

Paprika is a 2006 Anime film that was directed by the late Satoshi Kon about some scientist created a device called “DC Mini”, a device that could allow people to go into other people’s dreams and record them. One of them was Paprika, a young and cheerful girl. However, she was the dream avatar of Atsuko Chiba, one of the scientists that works for the “DC Mini” project. Things then started going downhill when the prototypes of the DC-Mini went missing and they are lacking in terms of vital component which could protects the DC-Mini user minds to be hacked.

Things went even more dangerous since if the DC-Mini were fall into wrong hands, it would be used as a form of psychological terrorism by assaulting the mind of the wearer and thus having some mental breakdowns. Not only that, it was revealed that the DC-Mini were stolen and the thieves are using the megalomaniac dream of an insane person as a Weapon of Mass Destruction. People who used the DC machines frequently in the past, such as Dr. Chiba, are at risk for being "infected" by the mad dream, and it's up to Chiba/Paprika, the DC's naive yet brilliant creator Tokita, and one stressed-out detective to save the day before reality gets invaded by the unstable Dream Land.

Now yes, In the story, DC-Mini was stolen by a person who have a pretty megalomaniacal dream so that he could rewrite the reality of his own and his actions cause the wearer to having mental breakdown. And MASSIVE SPOILER ahead!!!!!!!!

The person is revealed to be none other than the chairman of a Institute that Chiba and Tokita works, Seijiro Inui.

Who Is He

Seijiro Inui or better known as the Chairman is the paraplegic scientist who is, you guess it, the stern chairman of the Institute Physic Research where Chiba and Tokita works. He’s a scientist who claims that he will build a perfect place in the dream work but not only that, he claims that he is the "protector of the dreamworld", guarding this last haven against the inhumane horrors of reality and technology and plans to stop the dreaming machine/DC Mini project due to the victim causalities it caused. However, his goal is what not it seems to be....

What has he Done

See, here’s the thing....Towards the near-end of the movie, it was revealed that the Chairman was responsible for the mental breakouts to some certain people like Himuro and some other scientist and leave them as nothing but an empty shell. When Atsuko—in her dream persona, Paprika—found out that the Chairman was behind this, he then tries to capture Paprika.

After Atsuko woke up from her dream, she and Dr. Shina then goes to the Chairman’s home, Paprika then calls him out on this and not only that, she also find the horrifying truth that Dr. Morio Osanai, who is one of Chiba’s accomplices was working with the Chairman all along due to the fact that he agreed to give the Chairman his body and become the Chairman's lackey as long as he retains equal powers over his own dreams and after the chase scene, The Chairman and Osanai then successfully captures her.

Paprika then wakes up in a butterfly room in which she was pinned on the table. There, Osanai admits his love for Chiba, and literally peels away Paprika's skin to reveal Chiba underneath. However, he is interrupted by the outraged Chairman who demands that they finish off Chiba consideredd they are sharing the two bodies with each other and as a result, they battle for control as they argue over Chiba's fate. When Konakawa, the police officer who is also Chiba’s patient, enters the dream of the Chairman and Osanai, he then flees with Chiba to his own recurring dream, causing Konakawa to realize that his recurring nightmare and anxiety result from his guilt that he never finished the film he was making with a now deceased friend. Osanai then chases after Chiba and Konakawa. Fortunately however, he got shoot by Konakawa and as a result, he got killed in the real world. But even then, this leads to horrible results.

After Osanai got murdered, The Chairman then returns in the form of a living nightmare and as a result, the dream world and the reality world are merged with each other. After the chairman appears, he then reveals his twisted dreams of omnipotence, and threatens to darken the world with his delusions by saying that he could control dreams and even death and tries to get rid all the “deficiencies” that he sees. Meanwhile, a ghostly apparition of Chiba appears and reveals that she has been in love with Tokita this whole time and has simply been repressing these emotions. She comes to terms with her own repressed desires, reconciling herself with the part of her that is Paprika. Paprika returns to Tokita, throwing herself into his body. A baby emerges from the robotic shell and sucks in the wind, aging as she sucks up the Chairman himself, becoming a fully-grown combination of Chiba and Paprika. In this new form, she is able to consume the Chairman's dream form that was trying to destroy the city and end the nightmare he created before fading away.

Freudian Excuse/Mitigating Factors

This is where it gets tricky. While you can tell that the Chairman's goal are a bit......Well-Intentioned, given that he wants to protect the dream world from malicious technology, this was actually subverted big time when he took his nightmarish form when he wants to change reality by himself and tries to change the reality and erasing the things that he sees as a flaw and it also doesn't excuse the thing that he had done with another scientist by bodyjacking their mind and resulting them injuring themselves. There's also his relationship with Osanai that could be taken into account. Personally I don't think this is mitigating at all considered he tries to treat Osanai as a slave when he took control of his body and then there's the fact that when he reacts to his death, he reacts in a way that something possessive has been taken from him and says that he shouldn't die yet since without him, he would not become a perfect being. So yeah.......I think he subverts any redeeming qualities at the end of the day.

Heinous Standard

Sets it! Stealing the incomplete machine, bodyjacks some innocent people to the point some of them become an empty shell, killing anyone who gets in his way of accomplishing his goals and then tries to rewrite reality itself so that it could suits his own whims when he become the nightmare version seals the deal for me. And keep in mind that any of the bad things that he caused in the movie can be traced back to him. While yes, Osanai does attempt to rape Chiba, he doesn't count due to being out-heinoused by The Chairman himself and he genuinely loves Chiba. So yeah.....

Final Verdict

Thoughts? I understand if you guys see him didn't count given his weird mitigating quality and the weird nature of the film too. And if he counts, it would be the first and only Satoshi Kon's CM. And yes, not all works need C Ms and I understand that. Also, after this, I'll be covering another anime which has the "Dream" theme in it and it's called Dream Eater Merry.

The Turtles stuff:

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures: Though this title, originally based on the first cartoon series, started off as a more lighthearted series, that soon changed:

  • Krang is far darker then the animated version. Working with Shredder to defeat the Turtles, the Turtles' discover the depth of Krang's evil when they fight two aliens named Wingnut and Screwloose. After the Turtles defeat them, Screwloose explains that Krang's forces invaded their home planet of Huanu, killing most of the population. Krang's forces have been going around Dimension X, destroying all life on any planet they find, searching for a powerful crystal called the Turnstone. Another former warlord from Dimension X named Cherubae has possession of the Turnstone and is hiding on Earth. Krang, feeling he needs more powerful allies to defeat the Turtles and Cherubae, contacts the insect queen Maligna. In exchange for loaning him ten of her insect warriors, Krang promises to lead Maligna to Earth, so that her insect warriors can kill the human race and colonize Earth. Krang is ultimately defeated and Cherubae uses the Turnstone to banish him to the prison planet of Morbus. Krang eventually escapes from Morbus and returns to Earth, where he graphs himself on to Shredder's body and plans to kill the Turtles and then hunt down their loved ones, not caring how much damage Shredder's body takes while fighting the Turtles.
  • The aforementioned Queen Maligna is the cruel leader of a race of alien insect warriors called the Malignoids. Maligna and her children seek out worlds teeming with life and consume them. Maligna is introduced when Krang contacts her, promising to lead her to Earth, if her warriors defeat the Turtles. After Krang's defeat, Maligna comes to Earth and begins her invasion. She sends eggs to Earth; these eggs contain larva which devour everything in their path. She also sends pods to Earth, containing more adult Malignoids, who will attack everything in sight when they hatch. Maligna also has a habit of eating her own children, devouring one of her Malignoid warriors after he successfully completed a task for her. Maligna captures Raphael and Mondo Gecko, planning to have them fattened and dipped in honey, so she can devour them in a feast later. After the Turtles and their allies defeat her children on Earth, Maligna sends her armada of space ships to destroy everyone on Earth. Maligna is eventually defeated and vows to leave Earth, but later says she will return when they least expect it. Maligna returns much later, after her ally Mr. Null kills the Mighty Mutanimals, removing several of the heroes who opposed her off the board, planning to finish what she started and destroy the human race.
  • The aforementioned Mr. Null was introduced as an unseen tycoon, who enslaved a remote South American tribe to work in some of his mines and tries to dump toxic waste into the ocean. However, we soon discover that Null is actually a demon and has sold the Earth to the aforementioned Queen Maligna and her hordes of insectoid aliens, who plan to destroy humanity and colonize Earth. After the Turtles and their allies the Mighty Mutanimals thwart this alien invasion, Null seeks revenge on them. Null takes control of the Horsemen of the Apocalypse and captures the two groups. Null is planning to make the female members of the Mutanimals into his harem, while the others will be slowly electrocuted to death. Null plans to force Kid Terra, one of Null's former underlings who turned against him, into pulling the switch that electrocutes his enemies, wanting to torment his former employee. After this scheme is thwarted, Null later returns and hires some cyborg assassins, who manage to kill most of the Mutanimals. Null decides to torment Candy Fine, who the girlfriend of Mutanimal Mondo Gecko, by showing her images of the Mutanimals burning in hell. Null then mind-controls her and makes her into his slave. Null had the Mutanimals killed so he can continue what he started, trying to help Maligna destroy the human race. When asked why he does what he does, he responds thusly:
Because death, destruction, these are my favorite things, the things I do best.

BTW, I know this covers 2 characters, but I'm wondering if this can be trimmed:

  • The Condor: Nigel Harrington is a partner in a company that develops nanotech implants. while Taipan is a costumed mercenary he keeps in his employ. Harrington decides to use the company's implants to make profits illegally and has Taipan kidnap homeless people. Harrington and Taipan use the nanotech to mentally enslave the homeless people (as well as giving them enhanced speed and strength), and plan to test this tech by having them commit crimes. All of the homeless people die while committing these crimes, their hearts unable to take the stress this tech puts on them. Both Harrington and Taipan decide to kidnap younger, stronger, more athletic people instead, so Taipan begins to kidnap skateboard enthusiasts and mentally enslaves them. After the other partners in the company, George and Maria Valdez, discover Harrington's scheme, Harrington orders Taipan to murder them, using some of their mind controlled pawns to kill them and make it look an accident. Taipan then lures their son Tony to the scene and has two of the mind-controlled pawns to viciously beat him, crippling him. Taipan later tries to lure Tony to his death again (after he recovered some of his mobility due to a nanotech implant) and tries to have her mind-controlled pawns finish him off. Later, Taipan, in her civilian identity, Valeria, invites Tony to her beach house, where she plans to kill him after seducing him. Tony escapes, but Valeria comes on to Tony's estranged cousin and convinces him to set Tony's house on fire, attempting to kill Tony's friends at the house. Later, Harrington sets up a meeting with some terrorists, attempting to sell the tech and the mind-controlled pawns to them. Things seem to be going well for him, until Taipan kills him and takes over the operation herself.

No, dude, there's no point.

Chill with the subpage jumping.

[down] As has been made clear, several times now, we don't have to jump on making a page every time we hit "X" entries. I've explained that the web original page isn't overcrowded or disorganized, you need to be looking for reasons why a page is necessary and in this case, there isn't one.

I'm still in favour of purging the hell out of that MLP page, I really doubt that characters like the one who rips a soldier's limbs off and beats him to death with them are either from a fic that meshes with the setting or from a properly set up reimagining that's basically its own universe a la There Will Be Brawl.

Honestly, given that these fanfic things aren't examples from one joined franchise or series (being based on one doesn't count, methinks), I'd be fine with just moving the MLP works back to the main page and just list them under a header like we did for What If and the nosleep ones. At the very least, that's what I propose we do for works that have an abnormally large amount of fanfics with qualifiers.

Hope you all like old, underrated games. Oh, and [tup] to the chairman.

What is the setting? Shadow Man is a game about voodoo, serial killing, and overall creepy stuff. You are Michael Le Roi, a former literature student who lost his parents and his little brother Luke to gang members. Following this tragic event, Michael unwillingly became a hitman for a bokor (a voodoo sorcerer), but was saved by Mama Nettie, another specialist in voodoo who turned Michael into the Shadow Man, a powerful voodoo warrior with the ability to travel to the Deadside (Purgatory) and then return to the Liveside (our world). Mama warns Michael about an evil force who is trying to bring the apocalypse to the Liveside, and this is our candidate, Legion.

Who is Legion? Legion is a millenia-old being originating from the Deadside. He was banished from the Deadside by its guardians for being just too evil for them to handle, and for his obsession with Dark Souls, artifacts capable of empowering those who collect it. Seeking to return, Legion poses as ancient voodoo gods and spreads a false prophecy about the end of the world, just so he could manipulate those in the Liveside. Legion recruits five of the worst serial killers he could find (Jack the Ripper included) and gives them a chance to continue their killings in the Liveside if they help him achieve his goal, with countless people getting killed as result. In the Deadside, Legion builds a massive "Cathedral of Pain", where he conducts horrible experiments on the citizens of the Deadside, mutilating and fusing them with Dark Souls to create an army of grotesque creatures to invade the Liveside and extinguish all life. Knowing that the Shadow Man is onto him, Legion poses as Luke just to mess with him, and reveals himself to Michael by telling him a joke about a murderer and his victim, laughing as if it was the best joke in the world, and mocking Michael for not letting his brother rest in peace. If Michael fails to defeat Legion, he succeeds and invades the Liveside with his army to start the apocalypse.

Heinous? Legion is the single worst character in this entire game. The serial killers Michael has to face are bad too, but some have excuses, from being too comical to just outright insane, Legion on the other hand knows very well what he is doing, and he likes it. In fact, Legion is so evil that his mouth is constantly bleeding, indicating that his human form is not fully capable of handling his demonic influence.

Excuses? None at all, Legion is just evil because he is evil.

Conclusion? Keeper.
