Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Complete Monster Cleanup Thread

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

As the guy that originally proposed him, late [tdown] to TWR!Himmler considering the agency issues.

That said, I do have three more keepers to discuss from a HOI 4 mod that's a fanwork for a work of fiction that is disallowed on this page officially, but almost every fanwork for it has a CM of sorts coming up soon once they update for the new DLC.....

Yes to Belathauzer and Stench!

Thanks to Scrags for cluing me in on these...And for mine from this here collab...from Dead of Night featuring Werewolf of Night.

Who is Dr. Kalbfleisch? What has he done?

The head of scientific research of the mysterious "Babylon Group", Kalbfleisch has been capturing and experimenting on "supernatural" creatures for years, subjecting a variety of ghosts, fishmen, and other oddities to traumatic treatments and experiments that have left most of them lifeless husks under his "care", using his research to benefit pharmaceutical companies. Kalbfleisch brags "We've cured polio. But that's a secret. Diphtheria, too."

A morally bunkrupt sociopath who found "Jack Russell" and his sister Jenny after Jenny became an uncontrollable, animalistic werewolf and slaughtered her entire town, Kalbfleisch turned Jenny into another of his lab rats, setting young Jack up with a fake family while consistently subjecting Jack to what are shown as "torturous" DNA and blood harvesting sessions that Kalbfleisch uses to experiment further on Jenny. When Jack started showing signs of lycanthropy himself, Kalbfleisch intended to turn the boy into a full-time experiment, only for his parents to try to save him by running away...the werewolf animal inside Jack emerged instead and killed his parents then fled into the night, pursued by Babylon.

For years, Babylon has pursued Jack, and now that Kalbfleisch is losing patience, he decides the risk is worth it and unleashes Jenny as a werewolf to hunt down her brother. When it results in Jenny butchering Jack's pregnant wife? Kalbfleisch gives a resounding oh well, harvests the baby from her womb, and paints the attack as Jack's werewolf side having done it, driving Jack into traumatic despair.

Kalbfleisch then destroys Jack's locked-room safe haven that he hides in when his wolf side comes out, forcing him to either surrender to Babylon or transform in a populated city center and kill countless people. Jack surrenders, and finds out the truth about Babylon, Kalbfleisch offering him a deal: in exchange for keeping Jack and his barely-alive baby daughter safe, Kalbfleisch will use Jack as one of his lab rats and raise Jack's daughter into a killing weapon and further experimental subject for his own uses.

Jack, naturally, refuses and rampages through Babylon to get his daughter to safety. In a spiteful rage, Kalbfleisch unleashes a variety of his experiments—notably a sadistic Ax-Crazy vampire and a barely-mentally-functioning Frankenstein Expy—and allows them to try to kill Jack's infant daughter to stop them. Ultimately, Kalbfleisch manages to capture and turn Jack into a comatose guinea pig, subjecting his daughter to the same "fake family, regular experiments" schpeal as Jack went through as a youngin', Kalbfleisch seemingly having won...only for the last moments of the comic to show, years later, Jack's daughter having manifested the wolf inside her and huntinf down Kalbfleisch inside Babylon to save her father once and for all.

Mitigating features?

Nothing, his entire schtick is For Science! and for the greed of pharmaceutical companies to profit on his research.

Heinousness?

So, Jack and Jenny's werewolf sides are...bad. Jenny's killed her family and entire town then Jack's fiance, Jack's slaughtered his foster parents and has killed plenty innocents over the years...buuuut they're ultimately more like wild animals than anything else, and Kalbfleisch isn't a big bad wolf. Just a nasty scientist who experiments on groups of supernatural beings in nasty ways, is willing to torment and threaten children as young as newborns to accomplish his goals, and is the true Big Bad of the comic in haphazardly unleashing Jenny and getting Jack's fiance killed.

Final Verdict?

I'd say Kalbfleisch is juuuust passing.

Alright got a candidate from How to Train Your Dragon I may have missed but as always, the thread decides. Thankfully the about section is gonna be much more brief than the others I got from the series but holy fuck is he a Small Role, Big Impact.

What is the work? How to Train Your Dragon is a book series that combines vikings... and dragons. Having Hiccup as our unlikely protagonist, you follow him and his allies through a multitude of adventures. While books 1 to 7 are mostly self contained with a few references (reoccurring villains etc) Book 8 is notably more darker and ends with a more Bittersweet Ending. During Book 8 we meet Excellinor for the first time and she tells a story about Hiccup's ancestor which has our candidate for today. Hiccup II's brother Thugheart.

Who is Thugheart and what has he done?

Thugheart is Hiccup II's brother and the eldest son of their father Grimbeard. Thugheart was raised well and was set to be due king of the vikings but fate had other plans. Grimbeard's soldiers had discovered that Hiccup II had survived being left in the wilds by his dad and was brought to him. Although Grimbeard was taken aback, he genuinely bonded with his son and was starting to change his ways of brutality.

Now Thugheart's response to dear old daddy bonding with his other sibling? Plot with the king of the mainland to overthrow Grimbeard and have both him and Hiccup II murdered. Because Hiccup II was gonna try and have a peaceful protest with both human and dragons to let bygones be bygones and usher a new era of cooperative peace, Thugheart manipulates Grimbeard into thinking Hiccup II was starting a dragon rebellion to kill him. The result? Instead of a peaceful protest, it ended in a bloodbath with Grimbeard eventually mowing Hiccup II down with his sword.

Hiccup II reveals that he only wanted a peaceful outcome, horrifying Grimbeard. This outcome also shaped the dragon Furious into becoming a vengeful genocidal W.I.E since Hiccup II was his adopted brother. With Grimbeard discovering Thugheart's treachery, he has him exiled from which Thugheart builds his own tribe of equal minded psychopaths called The Outcasts (in which our good old duo Alvin and Excellinor come from.)

Mitigating Features or Freudian Excuse?

Wahh dad gave another brother more attention, I'm gonna try and instigate a war so I can be king.

Now you're probably concerned whether the story is true since it's told by Excellinor. Yes it is, there's plenty of evidence (for one the pissed off dragon who tells you lmao.) Him having a wife and child? He's on an island with like minded psychopaths and there's not a single ounce of what they're marriage is like so no I don't think it's negating.

Heinous Standard?

Now this is my biggest problem because the 3 I've got up are guilty of attempted genocide, and there's still another character who wants genocide.(No he doesn't count, I recently got him up on MB) Thugheart could've simply just tried to kill Hiccup and Grimbeard privately but no he tries to instigate a war because of his little brother being more loved. I know resources aren't a get out of jail card but Thugheart literally did this on his own. He may have conspired with the mainland king but the idea of manipulating Grimbeard falls onto his shoulders.

Final Verdict?

If not for the heinous standard giving me pause, a very tenative keep.

So there's something important, apparently there's an issue where someone said "Josh Reynolds portrayed Mannfred Von Carstein as being still a treacherous monster but also capable of genuine nobility, whereas every other writer has him as a Complete Monster." when if that's an issue than C Ms "capable of genuine nobility" but refusing to be redeemed such as Frollo need to be cut. A CM can have a good side if it doesn't necessarily influence their actions yes?

He might be referring to Mannfred's redeeming qualities in Age of Sigmar? It's a sequel but I think also an alternate continuity.

Mannfred is treated as having redeeming traits in Age of Sigmar, a distant sequel— this is a classic Depending on the Writer case, he spent the entire original continuity a treacherous, irredeemable, sadistic monster and— though Age of Sigmar is treated as a sequel— he didn't gain redeeming traits until then. None of his original run has him having redeeming traits and I'd be extremely opposed to removing him because a later writer would go on to give him said traits in a sequel, the canonicity of which to the original is arguable.

Plus, add in that Warhammer is going to have another reboot bringing back The Old World and I'm not in favor of Mannfred going because of Age of Sigmar.

So yeah I am coming back to the thread, I have a trim to start off with for a really unnecessarily long entry.

Current:

  • The Last Lamia: Dr. Theodore Erswick is the sociopathic leader of Avatech's Project Ascension. After forming a Faustian deal with a tribe of Lamias, he has them kidnapped from their beds at night to conduct excessive experiments and Electric Torture on them, then wipe their memories so that his pact can remain intact. When instructed to commit genocide on the Lamia species, Erswick sadistically agrees and has their homes burned and the Lamias slaughtered with guns and poisoned blades. When he comes across the dying Lamia Sovereign, he tortures her by shooting her repeatedly, then burns her alive for his own amusement. He has his soldiers collect all the Lamia corpses to harvest for their DNA, and transports them back to the city of Brookhaven, where he experiments with his genetic rewriting by performing horrific and torturous experiments on innocent people just trying to survive, killing them or transforming them into mindless monsters in constant agony. When Rebel leader Xander makes a deal with Erswick to turn over his allies in exchange for Erswick curing his sister Lani's fatal disease, Erswick betrays him and instead kidnaps all four members of the rebel group, injecting them with his experimental formula. He then mocks them as they succumb to the formula's effects, with Lani burning to death from the inside and technician Brec transforming into another monster. When Xander confronts Erswick, Erswick tortures and kills him with a Tesla coil. He then commands the monster to capture the survivor, Jason, for further experimentation.

Warhammer's having another reboot? Eh, I'm not opposed to Age of Sigmar. There needs to be some hope or it's impossible to care and the Age of Sigmar setting is more hopeful; the heroes, while flawed, are still good, and they actually have the power to hold back darkness so it doesn't feel pointless.

But yes, Mannfred is only really in possession of redeeming qualities in Josh Reynold's Age of Sigmar stuff. I personally liked it but it's not everyone's cup of tea.
