Oftentimes here in Trope Talk, we get questions about whether or not a given trope is tropeworthy enough, or is an example of the kind of non-tropes discussed in People Sit on Chairs. These threads are extremely frequent, and per discussion in the TRS meta thread, this megathread was created.
This will be a centralized place to ask: is this article I found tropeworthy? Does it convey meaning or is it used to tell the story, or is it just something that happens to exist in a work? Ask here, and hopefully you will get the answers you need.
Remember, something that is "(people sit on) chairs" means it's happenstance or conveys no meaning. Something that also happens in real life, is common, is rare, or seems minor is not the same as being chairs.
As an additional note, keep this in mind when bringing tropes in, as noted by amathieu13:

For trivia entries, I think it's somewhat common to list the out-of-universe examples first and then put fictional or in-universe examples under a separate header.
I've seen a few people say Trans Character, Cis Actor is chairs-y, mostly on other TLPs.
What do you guys think?

Art Museum Curator and frequent helper of the Web Original deprecation projectI'm uncertain about that concept in general, I expressed my concerns in the TLP. If this is in reference to the draft about trans performers playing cis characters, I certainly do not think we need to document every aspect of a trans actor's filmography.

Surprised that wasn't alerted in the TLP Crash Rescue thread.
135 - 169 - 273 - 191 - 188 - 230 - 300Well... most people weren't really concerned about that one (or at the very least, the people with concerns didn't really stick around for the long term to discuss it, which meant that it launched without a fight). People are far more concerned over this one.

Currently Working On: Incorruptible Pure PurenessI'm gonna page the trope's sponsor ~shatterstar here so that we can maybe get a few counter-arguments.
Art Museum Curator and frequent helper of the Web Original deprecation projectIs Awesome Backpack just “a backpack that is awesome”? The description isn’t especially clear about what it is.

TRS Queue | Works That Require Cleanup of Complaining | Troper WallThe practice was similar to Blackface, Yellowface and Ambiguously Brown casting, all of which we documented, so I don't see why it is "Chair"? If it is about the reverse, the TLP was discarded, which I do agree after consideration as we would devolve into troping every single character a trans performer play, which become unnecessary excessive.
Edited by shatterstar on Jul 6th 2023 at 3:53:24 AM
I get what you mean but why wouldnt Trans Character, Cis Actor get even more excessive?
Discord: Waido X 255#1372 If you cant contact me on TV Tropes do it here.Simply put: The amount of (confirmed) trans characters aren't big enough. And hopefully this practice will be a thing of the past. Also, this trope would be worth documenting just for the Unfortunate Implications of casting opposite sex actor alone (ie. Cis man as trans woman and cis woman as trans man).
Re: Awesome Backpack. I think it's about unique and special backpacks that carry unusual things. But it's not clear how unique and special it is or what "awesome/unique" mean exactly.
Thoughts on Get on the Boat?
It looks like it could be any of the following:
- Player runs out of things to do in an area and has to move to the next area (least tropeworthy)
- Boats as a way (whether player or event controlled) to get past a body of water that isn't clearable otherwise. (better, but redundant with Broken Bridge)
- It's an early Global Airship that could eventually become obsolete.
Oldest Internet Archive copy. Oldest copy with examples. Archived discussion with unanswered confusion over definition. Oldest copy with more expansive description. Previous TRS that went nowhere.

TroperWall / WikiMagic CleanupHow is Video Arcade trope worthy? It doesn't say anything about how and why the arcade is used in fiction, it is just "some scene is set in an arcade".
Well the description could be larger, for example how it's a place to drop your Free-Range Children in, so they experience the first taste of gambling and get bullied by a Godlike Gamer. A wick check would never hurt.
TroperWall / WikiMagic Cleanup“Work has one” will be a bad example regardless of trope, but I agree the purpose is fun hangout spot.
As they become less ubiquitous there’s also the nostalgia angle, as eg. Wreck-it-Ralph and Stranger Things
basically it seems like a more child-friendly version of the Good-Guy Bar, yeah. at least from a glance. if there's a lot of misuse maybe a rename could be in order.
Is Contrasting Sequel Antagonist a valid concept? It boils down to "new villain is different from the previous villain", which, duh, they all do except Meet the New Boss and almost no contrast.
TroperWall / WikiMagic Cleanuphuh, I thought from the name it was "the sequel's villain is a foil to the previous work's villain" which is perfectly tropeworthy.
but this really is "the next villain is different from the previous one"....
ETA: I went to look for the TLP draft but it isn't listed on the discussion page. So, I went to the oldest edit to to find the name of the launcher so I could check their TLP history. And it still doesn't show up. Last resort, wayback machine and the oldest archive of the page doesn't even have the 10 works / 12 wicks needed to launch [1].
So now I'm confused as to how this page even came to be.

I believe page creation in Main was allowed for non-mods until 2016.
TRS Queue | Works That Require Cleanup of Complaining | Troper WallIs Caltrops tropeworthy? It seems no different from the weapon tropes we've gotten rid of, there's no mention of what it means for them to be in fiction.
The last paragraph does say this: Mythbusters tested their effectiveness in a police chase scenario and while they do work, what tends to happen is non-hollow caltrops plug the hole they create in the tire, meaning their effective power tends to take a few minutes to kick in.
So maybe there is a potential trope in there, "Instant Caltrops", about caltrops working quicker than they do in real life, but as it stands the page seems really chairs-y.

It does say, "Handy for preventing pursuers from catching you, whether they are on foot, on horseback, or, in more modern cases, in a vehicle", so pretty bare on description but there's their story function. Mm, the entries should describe their narrative impact as barriers/deterrents/ouch-makers, not just point out they exist.
I think this is the standard format. Fictional examples first, then real life ones. Also, since you allowed fictional examples in the trope, that means they matter as much as real life examples do. We care for both bc the trope documents both.
