Old Complete Monster cleanup thread

Welcome to the Complete Monster proposal thread! This is the thread where new Complete Monster examples are vetted, approved, and written up. If you're looking for the general cleanup thread (for cuts, rewrites, expansions, and the like), please go here

Important: Before suggesting any new examples, please read the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List; if you have any questions, the odds are high they are answered there. Additionally, please check here for the earliest date a work can be discussed (usually two weeks from the U.S. release date) and whether the work has already been reserved by another user.

Here is how the process works:

    Process

  1. If you have a candidate to propose, you can simply come right in and propose them! If the character's run is brief, such as a single issue of a comic book, then a simple summary of their actions and any potential redeeming qualities will be enough; for longer-running candidates, an effortpost (EP) might be helpful for organizing the proposal. An EP is not outright required, but please be mindful that if a post becomes too clunky and unorganized, it can be very hard for other people to follow.

  2. After the proposal, there will be a 72-hour discussion and voting period, where people may ask questions and vote on the candidate. The number of upvotes must outnumber the downvotes by at least five for the character to be considered "approved".

  3. Three days after the proposal has been made, if the character has been approved, you may post the writeup (the text to be posted on the trope page itself) on the thread and send it to the drafts page. Your candidate will soon be added to the CM subpage. If the work has a page, you should add your candidate to the relevant YMMV page. Voila! It's that simple!

Outside of this process, we do have a few ground rules:

    Ground Rules

  1. To keep the thread moving at a reasonable pace, there are some restrictions on when a proposal can be made. There should only be a maximum of four EPs posted both per page and per hour to ensure that nothing gets lost in the shuffle; additionally, each individual troper should only be proposing or writing up characters from a maximum of three works at a time (from initial proposals to end of their voting period). If your proposal would fall outside of either of these guidelines, we'd like to ask you to please wait until they would fit within; feel free to type them up on an outside document, and then when the time comes, you can just copy, paste, and post!

  2. No plagiarism of any kind. This is a very serious matter site-wide, as the website could get in actual legal trouble over this; as a result, this can very quickly lead to mod intervention. This can take many different forms:
    1. Direct plagiarism, i.e. wholesale copying. This is not only the easiest to find, but is also the most likely to warrant quick moderator intervention. To be clear, quoting in some places is perfectly acceptable, but it has to be very clear you're quoting from something else and it cannot be anything longer than a sentence or two - if you're quoting an entire work summary from Wikipedia, no one is going to believe you've actually consumed the work, so even if you cite your source, your candidate will be downvoted anyway.
    2. Self-plagiarism. Even if you can prove that you wrote the same text in both places, the site itself can't contain any of the duplicated text. If you already wrote something once before, it's not too hard to write it a second time.
    3. Using another site's work as a template for a proposal. Just because you don't copy and paste something directly doesn't mean it's any harder to detect if you're basing parts or all of your proposal on text someone else wrote. To be clear, this doesn't violate site rules and won't lead to mod intervention, but just like if you directly plagiarize, no one will believe you've consumed the work if you're clearly basing your proposal on something else. This thread largely operates on the honor system, and tweaking someone else's work to pass it off as your own is one of the fastest ways to lose trust.

  3. Votes must be for specific candidates, meaning no blanket voting (i.e. "yes to everyone I missed").

  4. If you are the first person to downvote a candidate, please provide an explanation of why when you do so. We're here for discussions above all, and a hit-and-run downvote doesn't facilitate anything.

  5. If a work is already reserved by another user, please don't comment on the work or any potential characters worth discussion before the discussion date. We know how exciting it is when a work has a keeper that you're waiting to talk about, but it's not fair to the person who reserved the work who is just as excited to lead the discussion to see the discussion getting spoiled before they get to do it. On the other hand, if the reservation only has one name attached, shoot them a PM - they may be down for a collaboration, which will get you in on the fun as well!

  6. Please keep the thread on-topic. While discussing the trope is fun and we encourage people to enjoy it, questions like "who's your favorite CM" are off-topic and can lead to thumps. That's the kind of question to take to people's PMs if they're willing. Similarly, while we encourage friendliness and familiarity with other users, posts should always have some kind of thread-relevant purpose; for instance, if you want to wish someone a happy birthday, feel free to, but if it's the only thing in the post, it's off-topic and needs something else alongside it. Again, though, while we strive for a friendly atmosphere, this is not Facebook; life updates are fun, but unless they have some kind of impact on your thread participation, please do not bring it here - we have Yack Fest for that.

  7. Please refrain from asking anything along the lines of "How Did We Miss This One?" In almost every case, the answer is simply "No one thought about it before". This Is a Wiki where everyone has different interests, and the fact that people missed a particular candidate, even one that seems like a textbook example of a trope or a character who is particularly iconic in pop culture, means absolutely nothing. The question is disruptive, has a simple and consistent answer, and provides nothing to any discussion.

  8. If you are suspended from parts of the website, it is still possible to participate!
    1. For users who are suspended from editing the wiki, you still have full access to this thread. You can propose candidates and write them up with no issues whatsoever; while you will have to ask someone else to post the entry to the relevant pages once it is done, all write-ups are considered thread-approved - as in, done by consensus - and thus doing so does not violate any rules regarding meatpuppeting.
    2. If you are suspended from the forums, your participation is limited but not impossible. It is still possible for a forum-suspended user to assist in creating the write-up for a character who has already been approved; as previously mentioned, write-ups are inherently considered a consensus-based edit and thus not tied to any one particular user. However, you can not assist in the proposal of a character; as a proposal is based around the forum rather than the wiki, doing so with a forum suspension qualifies as meatpuppeting.

  9. Please keep all discussions "in-house".
    1. What other wikis use for CM equivalents is irrelevant here.
    2. Please be wary of using other wikis, Fandom or otherwise, as sources of information. They are just as fallible as a site like Wikipedia in regards to accuracy because they can be edited by any user, just as this site can.
    3. Do not attempt to force a communication with an author in an attempt to gather evidence or settle a debate; besides the fact that this is a YMMV trope and thus author intent has variable weight depending on the circumstance, doing so may cross the line into drama exportation, which is prohibited site-wide.

If you would like to use an EP for your candidate, here's the general format. This format does not have to be followed exactly, but these are the main topics that need to be covered:

    Effortpost Template

What is the work?

This is a brief summary of the work you're going to discuss. We don't need a full plot summary here, just however much we need to understand going into the discussion — it can even be as simple as quoting the summary on the work's page.

Who is the candidate and what have they done?

This is essentially the character's biography — who they are, their story, the crimes they commit, and, preferably (though not required), what happens to the candidate at the end. It does not have to include every single thing they ever do — for some villains, we'd be here all day if that was the case — but it should include the highlights of their journey.

Any redeeming qualities? Freudian Excuse?

This is where any potential redeeming characteristics or tragic backstory should be discussed. Do they have a tragic past? Do they show that Even Evil Has Standards or Even Evil Has Loved Ones? Maybe a Pet the Dog moment or two? This is where these should be discussed in full. Not every potential redeeming moment is a clear-cut disqualifier, but we should hear of any potential issues to ensure the character is discussed in full.

Are they bad enough?

A Complete Monster has to be particularly vile by the standard of the work they appear in. Therefore, you should look at what the character does compared to similar characters in the same work. This takes into account things like:

  • Their resource level (a human Serial Killer can't stand up to an alien Omnicidal Maniac, but they can be bad by the standard of other human serial killers)
  • The amount of time they have to work with (such as a one-shot character versus long-running antagonists)
  • The quantity vs. quality of their crimes compared to others (someone with a lower victim count but far more visceral and personal crimes could be considered as equally bad overall as someone with a higher body count but less horror involved)

Essentially, this section is an analysis of the kinds of villainy shown in the work and an explanation of why this particular character's villainy stands out within it.

Final verdict?

This is where you post your final conclusion on the character in question. You can continue elaborating on your reasons or even just say a simple "yes" or "no"; at this point, we've heard everything we need to hear.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: This thread tackles very serious and dark matters on a daily basis. We will be discussing things like murder, rape, torture, human trafficking, crimes against children, and in particularly dark cases, several of these issues at the same time. We keep a lighthearted air, but all candidates carry the general assumption that these are awful individuals committing disgusting crimes. We ask that if you participate, you do so with the requisite seriousness such dark topics require; exclamations of how gross something is, whether serious or sarcastic, are disrespectful to the topics at hand, and if you cannot handle such topics, please do not participate.

And that's everything you need to know. Welcome to the thread!

I noticed the What She Did quote for the Villain with Good Publicity trope, and eventually decided to read the fic. After much deliberation, I determined that its "Bad Touch Mari" meets this trope's requirements and decided to make a proper effortpost, especially considering the negative light she is portrayed in.

What is What She Did?

What She Did is an OMORI Dark Fic that, similarly to Hands, explores what would happen if Sunny's big sister, Mari, was sexually abusive to him. There are two major differences in this continuity: Sunny's closest friend, Basil, is replaced with an assertive, raven-haired version named Rowan (who was scrapped from the source material); and Mari died in her mid-20s from a car crash, instead of a Staircase Tumble at the age of 15.

The fic proper takes place immediately after Mari's death, when Sunny, Rowan, Kel, and Aubrey are in their early 20s. Despite Rowan's reassurance that Mari can't hurt Sunny anymore, the latter deeply Hates Being Touched and lives in constant fear of harming or killing himself. Once Sunny finds the right time to tell his best friends the truth about Mari, however, he starts to heal from his trauma, and the fic ends on a happy note.

Mari's villainy isn't some attempt to bash her canon self, let alone a byproduct of any belief that her evilness is canon. It is treated with tact and fits the fic's serious subject matter. Besides, the fic lacks explicit sexual content; the closest thing to such is Mari forcefully kissing her brother on the lips.

Who is Mari, and what did this version of her do?

Mari is Sunny's deceased older sister. In the canon OMORI, she was The Heart to all the people around her, but her perfectionism over her musical recital with Sunny lead him to accidentally shove her down the stairs, killing her and breaking up their friend group for four years.

Fitting this fic's themes and inspiration, however, Mari is portrayed as unambiguously cruel behind closed doors. Seeing Sunny as her favorite victim of control and source of sexual satisfaction, around the time her canon counterpart died, she started to sexually molest him, getting him to deny that her behavior was harmful. Four years later, she started raping Sunny whenever she visited him, worsening his complex PTSD.

Mari used the friend group's and neighborhood's love of her to justify Sunny (and Rowan, once he found out the truth) keeping the abuse a secret. The two boys had no way of telling Kel, Aubrey, or Hero about their ordeal until Mari suddenly died in a car crash.

Any justifying backstory or other redeeming features?

While Mari keeps telling Sunny that she loves him, her "love" is nothing but perversion and possessiveness. She coldly scolds him for slights as small as misaligned eating utensils, and her telling Rowan that "...[Faraway Town would] probably think YOU raped Sunny!" indicates that she fully knows that she's raping her brother and it traumatizes the hell out of him — and has no remorse for it.

The story doesn't contain any backstory that would have caused Mari to act how she did, but her perfectionism is played up to make it a believable reason — but not an excuse — for her cruelty.

Considering that Mari's boyfriend, Hero, was utterly disgusted by her diary entries on her brother, and refused to even look at her true thoughts on him, she's not known to care about the rest of the friend group, or her family.

Is she exceptionally heinous?

Mari's most powerful resource is her neighbors' adoration of her, and she uses it to full effect. She tells Sunny and Rowan that no one will believe them if the abuse is reported, and the narrative indicates that any ill word about Mari to the citizens of Faraway would have fallen on deaf ears. Also, the town is depicted as full of homophobic religious fundamentalists, which Mari would have exploited by outing Rowan as gay and claiming that he's the one who abused Sunny.

Mari molested her brother for at least eight years. While she didn't do it as much when she was an adult, this is only because she had to attend college regularly to maintain her public image; she did it much more frequently when she was a high schooler. At both times, she molested Sunny as much as she reasonably could.

OMORI is a Realistic Fiction Coming of Age Story, and this fic follows a similar formula. The heinous standard is thus low in terms of scale (something Mari easily meets).

However, considering that Mari raped her brother numerous times; Sunny's friend group finds her deeds to be extremely reprehensible on a personal level, to the point that Hero burned all of Mari's belongings and all his keepsakes of her, vowing to cut all emotional ties with her.

Final verdict?

Yes, this version of Mari is a Complete Monster.

Yes to the alien and I guess Mari and Bowser. No to Turbo. I think I'll just barely lean yes for Horner.

Next up for Ward/Worm! First thing I want to establish for this character something called a clustertrigger. Powers in this world come from "triggers," the lowest, most traumatic person in a person's life; a clustertrigger is when multiple people trigger around the same time and place, linking them together and giving each member of the cluster a variant of the others' powers. Each cluster has its own arbitrary rules, which leads to problems for one of the main characters of Ward, Rain.

Rain is a teenager raised by the Fallen (don't need to reiterate how much they suck), who force him to participate in a terrorist attack where they set a crowded mall on fire and block the doors. Rain triggers out of sheer stress, panic, and guilt... along with some of the survivors of the fire, forming a cluster. Each night, the members of the cluster get deposited into a "dream room" where they can talk to each other/plot to kill Rain. In this room, they also have tokens they can exchange with each other to amplify their powers—for instance, Rain's primary ability is to create energy blades, but if he gives some of his tokens to one of his clustermates then their variation of his ability will be strengthened. The tokens also create a bit of personality bleed-through—if Rain gives his token to a clustermate, they'll take on some of his guilt. Unfortunately, this creates some issues.

Who is Cradle?

Cradle, one of Rain's clustermates, is a textbook sociopath. Ever since he was a child he had a Lack of Empathy and lashed out at everyone... until he learned about a neat thing called consequences for his actions, as his glasses were broken after a tantrum and he was left blind for a week.

From then on, Cradle set about trying to improve himself. He made "friends," did nice things for them, and even told them about his condition—more consequences to keep him in line, to ensure he stays good and doesn't murder any pet cats of an annoying teacher. And over time, it actually started to work. Whereas before he did nice things as a way of earning social currency, now he buys gifts with no thought to how he'll benefit from his friends' happiness. He helps up an old man who fell without even really thinking about it. He's genuinely a little sad when a friend doesn't want to be friends anymore. He still doesn't truly care about anyone else, but he's on his way to being a functional member of society who can fake concern for others with no ulterior motives.

And then the mall fire happens. In the ensuing chaos, Cradle's glasses are once again broken and he realizes nothing he did mattered. There is no such thing as karma, his years of hard work won't stave off consequences. The universe is chaos, being good doesn't save you, and he will never have a normal life. At his lowest, Cradle triggers, ending up in the cluster. He fakes his death until he can "resolve" the situation, intending to kill Rain by working with their other clustermates, Snag and Love Lost, who hate Rain for the more reasonable reasons of "he blocked the doors and got a bunch of people killed" and "my daughter died in that fire" respectively.

Now, Cradle already utterly despises Rain, but things get worse when they exchange tokens one night. Cradle starts to feel... bad about faking his death. He's actually concerned about his friends and family, who must be devastated by his demise. Now, you'd think someone who wants a normal life would be overjoyed at being given empathy, but Cradle sees this as a violation of his very identity and sets out to murder the entire cluster so they can't further "infect" him. He gives his own tokens to Snag and Love Lost, infecting them with his sociopathy, and leads them in planning total war on the Fallen camp where Rain lives, recruiting an army of supervillains to attack even the innocent refugees who have sought out shelter with the Fallen after Jack Slash's apocalypse.

It doesn't go well. Snag gets killed—futilely trying to convince Love Lost their revenge on a scared, repentant and guilt-ridden teenager isn't worth this carnage as the sociopathy wears off in his final moments—and Cradle is arrested, but he and Love Lost escape prison to enact another plan. He forms an alliance with another villain, March, who is out to pop Gray Boy's time loops and release the victims within. Every single precog who has looked at the loops have stated that this is a very bad idea—they cannot see what might emerge from the loops, and the last time they couldn't see anything in this manner was when Jack Slash convinced god to kill the multiverse. Cradle is fully aware releasing these threats could, at the very least, lead to the complete slaughter of the 50 million-odd refugees in the nearby city, one of the few remaining bastions of civilization home to most of the survivors of the previous apocalypse. At the very most—a very likely potential—it may cause this reality to "collapse in on itself." He doesn't really care. If March can pop the loops with Cradle's technology, then Cradle can gain power and influence by helping stop the threat she releases. If no one will accept his help, or if the threat is unstoppable, then he'll happily sit back and watch as the entire earth is annihilated, earning favor with enemy worlds throughout the multiverse.

Along the way he betrays Love Lost, intending to plunge her into an "ego death" through the bleed-through and steal her powers, and invents a device that allows him to cut enemies to pieces without killing them. He uses this to attack several hero teams, turning them into mincemeat and leaving them to suffer from... well, being turned into mincemeat and feeling every single thing you'd normally expect from being chopped to small pieces, except without any end to the torment. One group he targets specifically because they're known for foiling human traffickers, earning favor with villains who rely on the smuggling routes they bust, and he later uses the weapon on teams comprised of children, taking pieces of them with him for use as hostages before he's beaten again and March dies.

Some time later, due to shenanigans, a bunch of people not in Rain's cluster get dragged into their dream room, provoking a guard dog—the physical manifestation of Cradle's power—to attack them all. Cradle does his best to be as unhelpful as possible, blocking their exit so his power can murder them, but gets killed when they drop a giant slab on him, rendering him braindead in the real world.

Is he heinous enough?

Setting aside the painful Fate Worse than Death, he also gives March the tools she needs to release a threat he believes is capable of wiping out an entire universe, with plans to allow that threat to rampage unheeded if he isn't given what he wants. It's not destroying the multiverse like Jack or Teacher (we'll get to him soon), but he's still punching way out of his weight class—Jack had all the other powerhouses of the Nine, including the walking mad science lab that is Bonesaw, and Teacher has a massive organization, an alliance with an entire alternate universe, and access to the fabric of reality itself. Cradle's just a newbie supervillain with a bunch of mercenaries on his payroll.

Even then, trying to destroy just a single universe is still a unique crime limited to... well, him, Jack, and Teacher. And I guess March, but she only manages to pop the bubbles using Cradle's technology, plus Cradle still has her beat with the Fate Worse than Death (and even if he didn't, she's too mentally ill to count).

Said fate worse than death is... really disturbing. We get long, uncomfortable sequences of one hero who was ripped to shreds fighting through the pain to communicate by blinking the one eye still intact, while the rest of her teammates completely break down after their chunks are thawed out from being left to freeze in the snow for hours—and even then, the numbing cold is still more comfortable than feeling anything. We get further scenes of the kids Cradle attacks trying to hold back tears and act strong for their mentors after having arms or legs ripped off, and... well, I won't say Worm/Ward is a stranger to horrible torture or And I Must Scream, but this is a uniquely, viscerally disgusting modus operandi that rightfully earns hatred from everyone who learns about it. Again, not bad for a newbie supervillain.

Mitigating qualities?

Cradle is an asshole, no doubt about that, but his backstory is somewhat tragic. His sociopathy is treated as a legitimate mental illness he worked his entire life to overcome, and he comes so, so close to achieving some modicum of normalcy.

...And then it's all thrown away for petty revenge. The real turning point is when he doubles down on the blood feud because he was given empathy—he sees the personality bleed-through as a violation of his self, and can't take the emotional pain of these new feelings, but... this is exactly what he needs for that "normal" life, and he doesn't even consider it. Even after getting blasted with an empathy wave in the climax of the March plot, he triples-down on everything and actively goes out of his way to repress his guilt.

Also, you know, he invents a really gruesome Fate Worse than Death, uses it on people completely unrelated to the blood feud, and sets up the entire universe—including his old friends and family—to be annihilated, putting the final nail in the coffin to ever trying his hand at normalcy again. He constantly tries to blame Rain for this, saying the bleed-through made it "physically impossible" for him to keep trying, but... no. Never does the story indicate the bleed-through stopped him from trying to be a better person, he's just an asshole who doesn't like feeling guilt and is constantly whining about it being Never My Fault. Rain may have a lot to atone for, he himself admits he doesn't think he's "better" even after saving so many lives in the time since the fire. But compared to Cradle? Yeah, he's 1000% a better person.

This is the only other one that counts. All others are played for fetish material (which is far more disgusting, let me tell you- at least these bother to present it as a bad thing, but the sheer amount of fics that play it as hot makes me wanna vomit), save for her “Everything is going to be okay” incarnation who only has a single rape and some ambiguous appearances as a ghost and thus doesn’t count. [tup] to this one though.

But can we talk about Bowser a bit more? I saw a bit of a season 1 compilation and I do question how seriously he is played even as Giga Bowser. The big battle scene has characters swearing and making quips, some gratuitous blood, and Bowser is beaten via a Deus ex Machina that looks just silly, complete with making a hole in the cardboard. I cannot tell if this is supposed to be taken seriously and is just a case of Narm or not. Here is the season comp for those curious:

That honestly seems more like Narm to me, like blood, swearing, and being beat by a Deus ex Machina are all stuff that can be taken seriously and probably only come across as weird due to the fact they are in this series.

ACW brought up his Mario Brothers incarnation, but that series has ZERO jokes, so its version of Bowser is able to be played as a dead serious threat. Meanwhile, this Giga Bowser, for one example, is the subject of a joke where a Lakitu poops Spinies on his chest (and it is literally referred to as “shitting Spinies”) only for him to comically wipe them off like nothing. He is defeated when Master Hand and Crazy Hand comically punch him through the cardboard sky and cause a hole to form through the cardboard.

[tup] to Cradle, by the way.

That is admittedly a bit more concerning, but as long as those jokes are few and far between and he is still mostly taken seriously he should be fine.
