Old Complete Monster cleanup thread

Welcome to the Complete Monster proposal thread! This is the thread where new Complete Monster examples are vetted, approved, and written up. If you're looking for the general cleanup thread (for cuts, rewrites, expansions, and the like), please go here

Important: Before suggesting any new examples, please read the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List; if you have any questions, the odds are high they are answered there. Additionally, please check here for the earliest date a work can be discussed (usually two weeks from the U.S. release date) and whether the work has already been reserved by another user.

Here is how the process works:

    Process

  1. If you have a candidate to propose, you can simply come right in and propose them! If the character's run is brief, such as a single issue of a comic book, then a simple summary of their actions and any potential redeeming qualities will be enough; for longer-running candidates, an effortpost (EP) might be helpful for organizing the proposal. An EP is not outright required, but please be mindful that if a post becomes too clunky and unorganized, it can be very hard for other people to follow.

  2. After the proposal, there will be a 72-hour discussion and voting period, where people may ask questions and vote on the candidate. The number of upvotes must outnumber the downvotes by at least five for the character to be considered "approved".

  3. Three days after the proposal has been made, if the character has been approved, you may post the writeup (the text to be posted on the trope page itself) on the thread and send it to the drafts page. Your candidate will soon be added to the CM subpage. If the work has a page, you should add your candidate to the relevant YMMV page. Voila! It's that simple!

Outside of this process, we do have a few ground rules:

    Ground Rules

  1. To keep the thread moving at a reasonable pace, there are some restrictions on when a proposal can be made. There should only be a maximum of four EPs posted both per page and per hour to ensure that nothing gets lost in the shuffle; additionally, each individual troper should only be proposing or writing up characters from a maximum of three works at a time (from initial proposals to end of their voting period). If your proposal would fall outside of either of these guidelines, we'd like to ask you to please wait until they would fit within; feel free to type them up on an outside document, and then when the time comes, you can just copy, paste, and post!

  2. No plagiarism of any kind. This is a very serious matter site-wide, as the website could get in actual legal trouble over this; as a result, this can very quickly lead to mod intervention. This can take many different forms:
    1. Direct plagiarism, i.e. wholesale copying. This is not only the easiest to find, but is also the most likely to warrant quick moderator intervention. To be clear, quoting in some places is perfectly acceptable, but it has to be very clear you're quoting from something else and it cannot be anything longer than a sentence or two - if you're quoting an entire work summary from Wikipedia, no one is going to believe you've actually consumed the work, so even if you cite your source, your candidate will be downvoted anyway.
    2. Self-plagiarism. Even if you can prove that you wrote the same text in both places, the site itself can't contain any of the duplicated text. If you already wrote something once before, it's not too hard to write it a second time.
    3. Using another site's work as a template for a proposal. Just because you don't copy and paste something directly doesn't mean it's any harder to detect if you're basing parts or all of your proposal on text someone else wrote. To be clear, this doesn't violate site rules and won't lead to mod intervention, but just like if you directly plagiarize, no one will believe you've consumed the work if you're clearly basing your proposal on something else. This thread largely operates on the honor system, and tweaking someone else's work to pass it off as your own is one of the fastest ways to lose trust.

  3. Votes must be for specific candidates, meaning no blanket voting (i.e. "yes to everyone I missed").

  4. If you are the first person to downvote a candidate, please provide an explanation of why when you do so. We're here for discussions above all, and a hit-and-run downvote doesn't facilitate anything.

  5. If a work is already reserved by another user, please don't comment on the work or any potential characters worth discussion before the discussion date. We know how exciting it is when a work has a keeper that you're waiting to talk about, but it's not fair to the person who reserved the work who is just as excited to lead the discussion to see the discussion getting spoiled before they get to do it. On the other hand, if the reservation only has one name attached, shoot them a PM - they may be down for a collaboration, which will get you in on the fun as well!

  6. Please keep the thread on-topic. While discussing the trope is fun and we encourage people to enjoy it, questions like "who's your favorite CM" are off-topic and can lead to thumps. That's the kind of question to take to people's PMs if they're willing. Similarly, while we encourage friendliness and familiarity with other users, posts should always have some kind of thread-relevant purpose; for instance, if you want to wish someone a happy birthday, feel free to, but if it's the only thing in the post, it's off-topic and needs something else alongside it. Again, though, while we strive for a friendly atmosphere, this is not Facebook; life updates are fun, but unless they have some kind of impact on your thread participation, please do not bring it here - we have Yack Fest for that.

  7. Please refrain from asking anything along the lines of "How Did We Miss This One?" In almost every case, the answer is simply "No one thought about it before". This Is a Wiki where everyone has different interests, and the fact that people missed a particular candidate, even one that seems like a textbook example of a trope or a character who is particularly iconic in pop culture, means absolutely nothing. The question is disruptive, has a simple and consistent answer, and provides nothing to any discussion.

  8. If you are suspended from parts of the website, it is still possible to participate!
    1. For users who are suspended from editing the wiki, you still have full access to this thread. You can propose candidates and write them up with no issues whatsoever; while you will have to ask someone else to post the entry to the relevant pages once it is done, all write-ups are considered thread-approved - as in, done by consensus - and thus doing so does not violate any rules regarding meatpuppeting.
    2. If you are suspended from the forums, your participation is limited but not impossible. It is still possible for a forum-suspended user to assist in creating the write-up for a character who has already been approved; as previously mentioned, write-ups are inherently considered a consensus-based edit and thus not tied to any one particular user. However, you can not assist in the proposal of a character; as a proposal is based around the forum rather than the wiki, doing so with a forum suspension qualifies as meatpuppeting.

  9. Please keep all discussions "in-house".
    1. What other wikis use for CM equivalents is irrelevant here.
    2. Please be wary of using other wikis, Fandom or otherwise, as sources of information. They are just as fallible as a site like Wikipedia in regards to accuracy because they can be edited by any user, just as this site can.
    3. Do not attempt to force a communication with an author in an attempt to gather evidence or settle a debate; besides the fact that this is a YMMV trope and thus author intent has variable weight depending on the circumstance, doing so may cross the line into drama exportation, which is prohibited site-wide.

If you would like to use an EP for your candidate, here's the general format. This format does not have to be followed exactly, but these are the main topics that need to be covered:

    Effortpost Template

What is the work?

This is a brief summary of the work you're going to discuss. We don't need a full plot summary here, just however much we need to understand going into the discussion — it can even be as simple as quoting the summary on the work's page.

Who is the candidate and what have they done?

This is essentially the character's biography — who they are, their story, the crimes they commit, and, preferably (though not required), what happens to the candidate at the end. It does not have to include every single thing they ever do — for some villains, we'd be here all day if that was the case — but it should include the highlights of their journey.

Any redeeming qualities? Freudian Excuse?

This is where any potential redeeming characteristics or tragic backstory should be discussed. Do they have a tragic past? Do they show that Even Evil Has Standards or Even Evil Has Loved Ones? Maybe a Pet the Dog moment or two? This is where these should be discussed in full. Not every potential redeeming moment is a clear-cut disqualifier, but we should hear of any potential issues to ensure the character is discussed in full.

Are they bad enough?

A Complete Monster has to be particularly vile by the standard of the work they appear in. Therefore, you should look at what the character does compared to similar characters in the same work. This takes into account things like:

  • Their resource level (a human Serial Killer can't stand up to an alien Omnicidal Maniac, but they can be bad by the standard of other human serial killers)
  • The amount of time they have to work with (such as a one-shot character versus long-running antagonists)
  • The quantity vs. quality of their crimes compared to others (someone with a lower victim count but far more visceral and personal crimes could be considered as equally bad overall as someone with a higher body count but less horror involved)

Essentially, this section is an analysis of the kinds of villainy shown in the work and an explanation of why this particular character's villainy stands out within it.

Final verdict?

This is where you post your final conclusion on the character in question. You can continue elaborating on your reasons or even just say a simple "yes" or "no"; at this point, we've heard everything we need to hear.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: This thread tackles very serious and dark matters on a daily basis. We will be discussing things like murder, rape, torture, human trafficking, crimes against children, and in particularly dark cases, several of these issues at the same time. We keep a lighthearted air, but all candidates carry the general assumption that these are awful individuals committing disgusting crimes. We ask that if you participate, you do so with the requisite seriousness such dark topics require; exclamations of how gross something is, whether serious or sarcastic, are disrespectful to the topics at hand, and if you cannot handle such topics, please do not participate.

And that's everything you need to know. Welcome to the thread!

Alright just to knock this one off, following Lighty's post on Blofeld. Here's Largo.

Who is Maximillian Largo

Known as "Number 1" within Spectre, Largo is an extravagant millionaire tasked by Blofeld personally to do his plot of holding the world ransom. Having his mistress ,Domino's, brother hooked on heroin in which he then has surgery operated on him to make him loyal to Spectre's cause, having Dark Action Girl Fatima Blush keep a tight leash on him, later having him killed for serving his purpose of launching the missiles to be stolen later. Largo then retrieves the missiles, allowing Blofeld to send out his broadcast to NATO.

Largo then later has Blush attempt to kill Bond via bomb in his hotel room, failing because Bond was "occupied" with a female in her room. Meeting Largo for the first time, Bond shares film screen time with him before returning to his base and discovering a fellow agent was drowned by some of Largo's goons.

Witnessing Bond kiss Domino, how does Largo retaliate? At his fortress, he has her chained and leaves her to be sold to some lecherous Arabs and leaves Bond chained to die not before revealing that one of the nukes is within Washington, which gets defused by the government. In the film's climax, Largo tries to escape with the second nuke but eventually gets harpooned by Domino when he tries to kill Bond trying to deactivate the Nuke.

Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Nada for the Freudian Excuse

His relationship with Domino is best established within their first scene together. She makes a remark about leaving him (a what if), Largo goes from smiling and giggling to stone faced, saying "Then I'll cut your throat".

His character page listing Benevolent Boss? He's chummy with subordinates but it's never shown that he cares for them since he leaves some of them to Bond's allies while he escapes with the nukes.

His Villain with Good Publicity status? He's the head schemer for an organisations world ransom plan with nukes. I doubt he gives a shit about "helping orphans" when willing to rob nukes.

Heinous Standard?

Blofeld may be the idea of the plan to hold the world ransom but Largo is the one to carry the plan out. Add on the unique niches of hooking Domino's brother onto heroin to keep him, and leaving Domino to be sold to the Arabs (which the film displays enough what the intention is there) it gives him a distinction compared to his Eon counterpart.

Oh because this film's standalone, there's no concern with comparing this Blofeld or Largo to the others listed.

Final Verdict?

Your call

Yes to Largo!

Now for a collab with my boy Scraggle...from a delightfully upbeat film!

What's the work?

Kidnapped is a 2010 Spanish horror-thriller film that takes a decidedly brutal stance on the home invasion genre. It follows the wealthy family of Jamie, Marta and their teen daughter Isa as they go through a night of hell when 3 masked criminals break into their home and begin terrorizing them.

Now, one of the thieves ("Young Thief") has morals and is way in over his head...the other two? Not so, and I'll open us with the Big Bad.

Who is Head Thief? What has he done?

  • The leader of the trio of thieves, Head Thief has been pulling off multiple murderous robberies lately; the film opens with some poor man left tied up and nearly suffocated with a bag over his head, and when he is saved by passerby, he reveals his family was taken hostage and robbed. He then learns his wife has been shot and killed, the work of the thieves.
  • Using disguises as movers to infiltrate the new home of Jamie, Marta and Isa and leave a path to break in, Head Thief leads the other two—Strong and Young—in barging into the house and taking the family hostage, Head giving Strong free reign to brutally beat up the family members.
  • Head forces Jamie into a vehicle and has him drive around the city to deposit tons of cash from various ATM machines, threatening him the whole time that if he doesn't comply, Head will give Strong the go-ahead to do whatever he wants to Marta and Isa. That being, raping and torturing them. When Jamie almost asks a nearby citizen for help, Head forces him to listen over the phone as he has Strong assault Marta before calling Strong off when Jamie begs for his family's life.
  • Eventually, after it is made clear that Head has no intentions of letting Jamie or his family live, Jamie crashes their vehicle and seemingly kills Head, returning home to save Marta, Isa and Isa's boyfriend César from Strong and Young. And as the day seems to be saved, Jamie ringing up the police...an actually alive Head shows up at the home, beats Jamie to death with a sledgehammer, shoots Marta and César dead, and then stabs a sobbing, traumatized Isa to death.
  • Whoopee.

Mitigating features?

None, he presents himself as reasonable enough to Jamie but he's a vicious sociopath who just wants cash and cares nothing for anything or anyone else.

Heinousness?

He's a regular home invader who opens the film having left a man to suffocate and shooting his wife; he spends the whole movie having Jamie, Marta and Isa terrorized and tortured, threatening to have Strong rape the women, and when Jamie foils his plans? Head pulls a serious The Hero Dies ending as he shows up and slaughters all the main characters in a spiteful rage.

Final Verdict?

Easy Yes from a bleak as fuck flick lmao

A long-awaited [tup] to the NSNA Largo as well! I put a tree in the drafts earlier when Blofeld was being voted on—which didn't have Largo yet. Guess I was too early though.

Based on the EP, [tup] to the Head Thief. Ehhh…

The Strong Thief sounds like he'll easily keep too and at least he got karma though from the sound of it. Almost sounds like it's the movie Funny Games is a parody of.

I hope nobody minds if I write up Podesta a day early, seeing as he seems to be a wrap.

  • Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio: The Podestà is the film's Fascist equivalent to the Coachman. A firm dedicant of Mussolini, the Podestà runs a military camp where children—including his own emotionally-abused son "Candlewick," whom the Podestà despises for his weakness—are trained to become unthinking, unfeeling Child Soldiers, hoping to squeeze all their humanity out until nothing is left but the urge to kill and die for Fascist Italy. When he learns Pinocchio is immortal, the Podestà tries to make an immortal child soldier out of him as well, and when Candlewick and Pinocchio befriend each other during an exercise, the Podestà coldly orders Candlewick to shoot Pinocchio anyway. Although indicated to have Hidden Depths at first, the Podestà is devoted to Fascism at the expense of everything else, promptly disowning Candlewick when the boy refuses to fall in line.

And...

What has the "Strong Thief" done?
  • One of Head Thief's nameless Co-Dragons, "Strong Thief" is a brutish rapist and torturer in comparison to his frailer, more nervous compatriot Young Thief. While Head Thief takes Jamie for a drive, Strong Thief is left with his wife Marta and his daughter Isa to make sure Jamie follows his instructions to the letter...
  • Not only does Strong Thief plan on raping and murdering Marta and Isa anyway—a sentiment that disgusts Young Thief—he has no qualms torturing them and anyone else who gets in his way. When Isa's boyfriend César shows up, oblivious to the presence of the thieves, Strong promptly kidnaps him as well. When Isa attempts to escape, Strong Thief tortures César half-to-death to make her stay, breaking the poor kid's arm and then shooting him non-fatally.
  • Likewise, when a security guard comes upon the property when the neighbors report screaming, Strong Thief unmasks himself and pretends to be Marta's husband. When this fails, Strong Thief cuts the knot and just slits the security guard's throat.
  • Infuriated at all the random intrusions ("how many boyfriends do you have?!" he angrily asks Isa) Strong Thief promptly gives up trying to be patient and decides to rape Isa. When Marta begs her to take her instead, Strong Thief callously breaks her arm instead, leaves her on the floor and drags Isa into the bedroom. Young Thief stops him mid-rape, but Strong Thief still keeps trying to go for Isa; when he refuses to stop, Isa takes a heavy statuette off the drawer and smashes it into Strong Thief's head, over and over and over and over and over and over...
    Heinous standard?
  • While Head Thief loosely directs him, Strong Thief is mostly left on his own devices, meaning most of the torture and murder is left to Strong's own initiative. He in fact has no trouble disobeying Head Thief to satisfy his cruel lust; while Head Thief orders Strong not to rape the women right away out of Pragmatic Villainy, Strong Thief doesn't even bother waiting for Head Thief's word before trying to go ahead with the rape and murder. If this is a Darker and Edgier Panic Room then Strong Thief is Raoul on steroids.
    Redeeming qualities?
  • Fuck all, especially in comparison to Young Thief who is constantly horrified at the depths Strong sinks to.

  • Prey (Sensation Studios):
    • Starved is Doctor Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik after having consumed a cooked piggy. After becoming obsessed with the taste, he started building robots to hunt down the animals to cook and eat them, hunting down every animal on Little Planet, destroying any robots that don't meet his expectations, and even having his second Furnace kill Tails and Amy.
    • The second Furnace that Starved built kills Tails and Amy the minute he is activated. After that, he attempts to catch Sonic to please Starved, but after getting a vision of Starved killing him for failing, he decides to just kill Starved, take over his robot army, and then bring Little Planet out of orbit to suffocate all its inhabitants, all in an effort to increase his own power.

Alright.

Dune may not work, but this guy…

He just might.

What is the work?

Healin' Good♡Pretty Cure, an installment of the Pretty Cure franchise. This installment is particularly unique in that none of the villains get redeemed and are all killed. And our candidate is the ringleader of these guys…

Who is the candidate and what have they done?

King Byo-gen is the leader of the Villainous Faction of the season, the Byo-gens, who want to spread disease around the world to make it devoid of life: They’re a bunch of Omnicidal Maniacs. Before the events of the show, he fights Queen Teatinu and her unnamed Cure Partner. He defeats them, and forces Queen Teatinu to watch as he turns her Cure Partner into a statue. Teatinu destroys his body, but King Byo-gen drastically injures her and infects most of the Healing Garden with diseases first.

He spends a good amount of time ordering his minions to spread dark energy and diseases around the world so that he can get his body back. That’s right, he is responsible for everything the Byo-gens do to humanity on his orders, though Daruizen has some unique crimes that make him a contender for this trope himself. There’s one other general, Guaiwaru, who could’ve been a contender, but in my opinion he didn’t get enough time to show what he could do.

He doesn’t meet the Cures until Episode 39. Seeing a resemblance to an ancient Pretty Cure in Cure Earth, he focuses her down and tries to murder her, summoning three strong shadow minions to keep the other Cures busy. He defeats them effortlessly and talks the Healing Animals down. However, the Cures and the Healing Animals have a Heroic Second Wind and defeat him…

But that isn’t the end. He returns two episodes later and reveals that he was well aware of Guaiwaru’s plan to usurp him, before absorbing the guy, also letting you know how bad the process is judging by how terrified Guaiwaru is. Because Guaiwaru had absorbed many Mega Parts, this drastically accelerated his progress in regaining his true body. He was counting on Guaiwaru doing this, using him as an Unwitting Pawn.

When Daruizen flees to Earth and ends up defeated by the Pretty Cure, he shows up and absorbs him, changing his form and becoming Neo King Byo-Gen. He curbstomps the Cures, psychologically tortured Cure Grace and infects all of Sukoyaka City. Queen Teatinu shows up and seals him in a cage.

It doesn’t do shit. He reveals that he created all of his minions himself, breaks out and infects the entire planet, endangering all life. He absorbs the Cures and the Healing Animals, and they manage to break free with the help of the Earth’s wishes. Together, they and Queen Teatinu destroy Neo King Byo-Gen. Peace is restored, and the planet and the inhabitants are cured of his infection.

Any redeeming qualities? Freudian Excuse?

There are a few, but they can all be debunked.

Two of his fellow generals were able to have the Capacity to Love, so Byo-Gens being Always Chaotic Evil and having Blue-and-Orange Morality is a no. This also shuts down them being Made of Evil. Heck. Nothing suggests Made of Evil: They’re living diseases. The show itself states that the Byo-Gens to be very similar to humanity.

He does have a Pet the Dog moment where he doesn’t execute a general for harboring Daruizen when he escapes from his first absorption attempt, but it’s very clearly out of Pragmatism as said “Dog” was one of his strongest generals, the only one who he saw as useful as a matter of fact, and didn’t give two shits when she was killed. Why? Because he can just make more servants.

Freudian Excuse? No. For the Evulz is in full effect.

GDV? no. He’s shown intelligence, cunning, a cruel, depraved personality and Chessmaster planning.

Are they bad enough?

Well, he doesn’t have to compete with the Pretty Cure villains that are already approved (He’d fail terribly to Goyan and Butler if he did) due to each season with the exception of Futari Wa and Splash Star being in different continuities.

King Byo-Gen tries to infect the planet with diseases that are most definitely dangerous to people’s lives, if the flashback to Nodoka wearing an Oxygen Mask and his infection knocking most of the Planet unconscious as soon as he pulls it are any indication. He’s essentially attempting Omnicidal Maniac goals by poisoning everyone on Earth with infection, all life on Earth actually, and dooming them to slow, painful deaths.

Also, he’s responsible for everything that happens, by his own hand or by the hand of others, as he reveals in the finale that he created the other Byo-gens, essentially giving them the ability to commit their crimes. He’s an absolutely HORRENDOUS boss as he proves with Daruizen. And again, Everything his faction does can be traced back to him.

Final Verdict?

Yes.
