Old Complete Monster cleanup thread

Welcome to the Complete Monster proposal thread! This is the thread where new Complete Monster examples are vetted, approved, and written up. If you're looking for the general cleanup thread (for cuts, rewrites, expansions, and the like), please go here

Important: Before suggesting any new examples, please read the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List; if you have any questions, the odds are high they are answered there. Additionally, please check here for the earliest date a work can be discussed (usually two weeks from the U.S. release date) and whether the work has already been reserved by another user.

Here is how the process works:

    Process

  1. If you have a candidate to propose, you can simply come right in and propose them! If the character's run is brief, such as a single issue of a comic book, then a simple summary of their actions and any potential redeeming qualities will be enough; for longer-running candidates, an effortpost (EP) might be helpful for organizing the proposal. An EP is not outright required, but please be mindful that if a post becomes too clunky and unorganized, it can be very hard for other people to follow.

  2. After the proposal, there will be a 72-hour discussion and voting period, where people may ask questions and vote on the candidate. The number of upvotes must outnumber the downvotes by at least five for the character to be considered "approved".

  3. Three days after the proposal has been made, if the character has been approved, you may post the writeup (the text to be posted on the trope page itself) on the thread and send it to the drafts page. Your candidate will soon be added to the CM subpage. If the work has a page, you should add your candidate to the relevant YMMV page. Voila! It's that simple!

Outside of this process, we do have a few ground rules:

    Ground Rules

  1. To keep the thread moving at a reasonable pace, there are some restrictions on when a proposal can be made. There should only be a maximum of four EPs posted both per page and per hour to ensure that nothing gets lost in the shuffle; additionally, each individual troper should only be proposing or writing up characters from a maximum of three works at a time (from initial proposals to end of their voting period). If your proposal would fall outside of either of these guidelines, we'd like to ask you to please wait until they would fit within; feel free to type them up on an outside document, and then when the time comes, you can just copy, paste, and post!

  2. No plagiarism of any kind. This is a very serious matter site-wide, as the website could get in actual legal trouble over this; as a result, this can very quickly lead to mod intervention. This can take many different forms:
    1. Direct plagiarism, i.e. wholesale copying. This is not only the easiest to find, but is also the most likely to warrant quick moderator intervention. To be clear, quoting in some places is perfectly acceptable, but it has to be very clear you're quoting from something else and it cannot be anything longer than a sentence or two - if you're quoting an entire work summary from Wikipedia, no one is going to believe you've actually consumed the work, so even if you cite your source, your candidate will be downvoted anyway.
    2. Self-plagiarism. Even if you can prove that you wrote the same text in both places, the site itself can't contain any of the duplicated text. If you already wrote something once before, it's not too hard to write it a second time.
    3. Using another site's work as a template for a proposal. Just because you don't copy and paste something directly doesn't mean it's any harder to detect if you're basing parts or all of your proposal on text someone else wrote. To be clear, this doesn't violate site rules and won't lead to mod intervention, but just like if you directly plagiarize, no one will believe you've consumed the work if you're clearly basing your proposal on something else. This thread largely operates on the honor system, and tweaking someone else's work to pass it off as your own is one of the fastest ways to lose trust.

  3. Votes must be for specific candidates, meaning no blanket voting (i.e. "yes to everyone I missed").

  4. If you are the first person to downvote a candidate, please provide an explanation of why when you do so. We're here for discussions above all, and a hit-and-run downvote doesn't facilitate anything.

  5. If a work is already reserved by another user, please don't comment on the work or any potential characters worth discussion before the discussion date. We know how exciting it is when a work has a keeper that you're waiting to talk about, but it's not fair to the person who reserved the work who is just as excited to lead the discussion to see the discussion getting spoiled before they get to do it. On the other hand, if the reservation only has one name attached, shoot them a PM - they may be down for a collaboration, which will get you in on the fun as well!

  6. Please keep the thread on-topic. While discussing the trope is fun and we encourage people to enjoy it, questions like "who's your favorite CM" are off-topic and can lead to thumps. That's the kind of question to take to people's PMs if they're willing. Similarly, while we encourage friendliness and familiarity with other users, posts should always have some kind of thread-relevant purpose; for instance, if you want to wish someone a happy birthday, feel free to, but if it's the only thing in the post, it's off-topic and needs something else alongside it. Again, though, while we strive for a friendly atmosphere, this is not Facebook; life updates are fun, but unless they have some kind of impact on your thread participation, please do not bring it here - we have Yack Fest for that.

  7. Please refrain from asking anything along the lines of "How Did We Miss This One?" In almost every case, the answer is simply "No one thought about it before". This Is a Wiki where everyone has different interests, and the fact that people missed a particular candidate, even one that seems like a textbook example of a trope or a character who is particularly iconic in pop culture, means absolutely nothing. The question is disruptive, has a simple and consistent answer, and provides nothing to any discussion.

  8. If you are suspended from parts of the website, it is still possible to participate!
    1. For users who are suspended from editing the wiki, you still have full access to this thread. You can propose candidates and write them up with no issues whatsoever; while you will have to ask someone else to post the entry to the relevant pages once it is done, all write-ups are considered thread-approved - as in, done by consensus - and thus doing so does not violate any rules regarding meatpuppeting.
    2. If you are suspended from the forums, your participation is limited but not impossible. It is still possible for a forum-suspended user to assist in creating the write-up for a character who has already been approved; as previously mentioned, write-ups are inherently considered a consensus-based edit and thus not tied to any one particular user. However, you can not assist in the proposal of a character; as a proposal is based around the forum rather than the wiki, doing so with a forum suspension qualifies as meatpuppeting.

  9. Please keep all discussions "in-house".
    1. What other wikis use for CM equivalents is irrelevant here.
    2. Please be wary of using other wikis, Fandom or otherwise, as sources of information. They are just as fallible as a site like Wikipedia in regards to accuracy because they can be edited by any user, just as this site can.
    3. Do not attempt to force a communication with an author in an attempt to gather evidence or settle a debate; besides the fact that this is a YMMV trope and thus author intent has variable weight depending on the circumstance, doing so may cross the line into drama exportation, which is prohibited site-wide.

If you would like to use an EP for your candidate, here's the general format. This format does not have to be followed exactly, but these are the main topics that need to be covered:

    Effortpost Template

What is the work?

This is a brief summary of the work you're going to discuss. We don't need a full plot summary here, just however much we need to understand going into the discussion — it can even be as simple as quoting the summary on the work's page.

Who is the candidate and what have they done?

This is essentially the character's biography — who they are, their story, the crimes they commit, and, preferably (though not required), what happens to the candidate at the end. It does not have to include every single thing they ever do — for some villains, we'd be here all day if that was the case — but it should include the highlights of their journey.

Any redeeming qualities? Freudian Excuse?

This is where any potential redeeming characteristics or tragic backstory should be discussed. Do they have a tragic past? Do they show that Even Evil Has Standards or Even Evil Has Loved Ones? Maybe a Pet the Dog moment or two? This is where these should be discussed in full. Not every potential redeeming moment is a clear-cut disqualifier, but we should hear of any potential issues to ensure the character is discussed in full.

Are they bad enough?

A Complete Monster has to be particularly vile by the standard of the work they appear in. Therefore, you should look at what the character does compared to similar characters in the same work. This takes into account things like:

  • Their resource level (a human Serial Killer can't stand up to an alien Omnicidal Maniac, but they can be bad by the standard of other human serial killers)
  • The amount of time they have to work with (such as a one-shot character versus long-running antagonists)
  • The quantity vs. quality of their crimes compared to others (someone with a lower victim count but far more visceral and personal crimes could be considered as equally bad overall as someone with a higher body count but less horror involved)

Essentially, this section is an analysis of the kinds of villainy shown in the work and an explanation of why this particular character's villainy stands out within it.

Final verdict?

This is where you post your final conclusion on the character in question. You can continue elaborating on your reasons or even just say a simple "yes" or "no"; at this point, we've heard everything we need to hear.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: This thread tackles very serious and dark matters on a daily basis. We will be discussing things like murder, rape, torture, human trafficking, crimes against children, and in particularly dark cases, several of these issues at the same time. We keep a lighthearted air, but all candidates carry the general assumption that these are awful individuals committing disgusting crimes. We ask that if you participate, you do so with the requisite seriousness such dark topics require; exclamations of how gross something is, whether serious or sarcastic, are disrespectful to the topics at hand, and if you cannot handle such topics, please do not participate.

And that's everything you need to know. Welcome to the thread!

Alright here’s my write-up for Cursa:

  • Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope: Cursa is the physical reincarnation of the Megabug born from a fragment of the Megabug absorbing stellar matter. After gaining sapience, Cursa went on to attack the Comet Observatory. This attack caused the Rabbids and Lumas to fuse into Sparks and Cursa to possess Rosalina. After taking over Rosalina’s body, Cursa decides to absorb the life out all of the Sparks across the universe and kill them so that it could break Rosalina’s hope purely out of spite and so that it can retain control over her. Cursa also planned on to destroy the universe by covering it in darkness. Cursa then went on to pollute multiple different worlds with Darkmess causing destruction and mayhem on said multiple worlds. Cursa then attacks the Mushroom Kingdom where it brainwashed all of Bowser’s minions. Once three of Cursa’s remaining Spark Hunter minions returned and only Daphne returned with three Sparks for Cursa to absorb the life out of, Cursa then absorbed the life out of the three Sparks and swiftly killed them. Once Rosalina finally manages to break free of Cursa’s control, it takes on a new form so that it can finally kill Mario, Rosalina, and their allies once and for all.

What do y’all think?

[down] Sure thing. Is this better?

Good start, but 255 words is too long. Should probably have mentioned that we like to keep writeups to a specific, low length. Can you get it down to about 200?

Lemme try:

  • Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope: Cursa, the physical reincarnation of the Megabug, born from a fragment of the latter absorbing stellar matter and becoming sapient, planned to destroy the universe by covering it in darkness. Cursa went on to attack the Comet Observatory, causing the Rabbids and Lumas to fuse into Sparks and Cursa to possess Rosalina. After taking over Rosalina’s body, Cursa decides to absorb the life out all of the Sparks across the universe and kill them so that it could break Rosalina’s hope—purely out of spite—and so it can retain control over her. Cursa then went on to pollute multiple different worlds with darkness, causing destruction and mayhem. Cursa then attacks the Mushroom Kingdom and brainwashed all of Bowser’s minions. Cursa later absorbed the life out of the three Sparks and swiftly killed its Spark Hunters. Once Rosalina finally manages to break free of Cursa’s control, Cursa takes on a new form so that it can finally kill Mario, Rosalina, and their allies.

Yes to Hammond, nay to Lavinia

  • BlacKkKlansman: Walker is the bombmaker of the KKK's Colorado Springs chapter, driven by racist spite to kill for his cause. Developing a powerful explosive, Walker guides Connie through his and Felix's plan to bomb an activist rally where hundreds of black students and lynching survivors will be gathered. Though the initial plan to murder the crowd fails, Walker had prepared a "plan B", and attempts to bomb the home of the activist rally's leader to kill her and everyone inside.

[up][up] Looks perfect, ACW. Just one problem, Cursa didn’t kill its Spark Hunter minions, it killed the Sparks that Daphne handed over to it for it to absorb, but I can easily edit that. Besides that, that’ll do just fine. Thank you.

I'd also suggest removing the part about Cursa assuming a new form to kill the heroes. Unless Cursa does this specifically out of spite towards Rosalina for breaking free of its possession of her, a villain attempting to kill the heroes because they're trying to stop them usually isn't considered too heinous an action, and we've cut multiple characters from this trope because of this.

EDIT: I'm also noticing overusage of the work "then".

What's the work?

The Transformers Film Series—commonly referred to as "Bayformers"—is a series of giant robot action movies directed by Michael Bay and generally agreed to be batshit explosive insanity as the heroic Autobots duel the vicious Decepticons with the fate of the Earth at stake.

Who is Starscream? What has he done?

The same "treacherous right-hand man of Megatron" as always, Starscream is established as currently leading the Decepticons ever since Megatron crashed on Earth and was put on ice years ago. In the prequel novel Ghosts of Yesterday, Starscream and the Decepticons stumble across the Ghost 1, a human-populated spaceship exploring the galaxy. Starscream, taking advantage of the nearby Autobots, tricks the crew of the Ghost into attacking the Autobots as enemies, gleefully musing how much he'll enjoy forcing the Autobots to kill the humans to utterly break their spirits.

When the humans begin doubting Starscream's words and try to stand down, Starscream orchestrates for them to buried alive and slowly perish on a crumbling planet's rock. Though the Autobots save the Ghost from this fate, Starscream later murders the entire crew of the Ghost to silence their knowledge that Megatron is on Earth, Starscream hoping to conceal this from the other Decepticons to maintain his rule. After a failed attempt to kill the group of Autobots in his way, Starscream flees with the Decepticons, delivering a brutal No-Holds-Barred Beatdown-cum-Cold-Blooded Torture session to his minion Blackout for daring to question Starscream's rule.

Having learned that the powerful All-Spark is on Earth, Starscream brings the Decepticons there to hunt for it, hoping to keep Megatron's presence a secret as he dispatches the Decepticons to cause destruction across the planet. Blackout slaughters a military base in Qatar, and Scorponok pursues survivors to kill them and civilians in the way, while Frenzy kills his way into a government facility and hacks the database to spread chaos through a virus across the globe. Barricade tracks down young Sam Witwicky to obtain his antique glasses—imprinted with Cybertronian information—and use it to find the All-Spark, eventually locating it—and the frozen body of Megatron—hidden inside the Hoover Dam.

Starscream leads the charge in assaulting the dam, the Decepticons killing plenty humans as they obtain the All-Spark and—regrettably for Starscream—awaken Megatron. The Decepticons intend to use the All-Spark to transform all human technology into robotic minions with which they will exterminate the human race and conquer the galaxy...Starscream does his level best in this goal, killing an entire squadron of human jet fighter pilots and nearly destroying several Autobots to claim the All-Spark for the 'Cons. When Megatron is ultimately beaten and the All-Spark destroyed, Starscream assumes command of the Decepticons yet again, detailed in The Veiled Threat.

Starscream sets up shop in the country of Zambia, where he tries to destroy a multitude of dams across the country, planning to flood and kill hundreds of thousands of humans and harm millions more through the loss of infastructure and massive flooding, and though this plan is foiled, Starscream murders the Autobot Breachbreak in the process. Starscream later teams up with the wealthy human Bruno Carrera to set a trap for the Autobots by having his minions devastate the city of Rome, killing many innocents before the Autobots save the day. In response? Starscream tracks down Bruno and does something so brutal to him out of petty annoyance that when police investigate Bruno's disappearance "they found nothing but smoking ruins. It was as if the man had never even existed: wiped clean from the face of the Earth. Starscream had attended to every detail."

Following this, Starscream flees from Earth, setting himself up as the caretaker of a new batch of Decepticon hatchlings and the wounded Fallen. Megatron is eventually revived by his loyalists, much to Starscream's cowaring annoyance, and Starscream begins working with the Fallen and Megatron to eliminate Optimus Prime and obtain the Matrix, so that the Fallen can destroy the Earth's sun and kill humanity. In the process, Starscream murders plenty of human soldiers and has Rampage take Sam's parents hostage, threatening to murder them if Sam doesn't hand over the Matrix and doom humanity.

Luckily, the Fallen is destroyed and the plan foiled, so Starscream and Megatron flee to recoup their losses. Working with Megatron to orchestrate the return of Sentinel Prime, Starscream plays a sizable role in the takeover of Chicago by personally bombing the ship supposedly carrying the Autobots away from Earth in a peaceful truce, and Starscream later kills any military that try to fly into the city of Chicago as the 'Cons devastate the city.

Working to ensure that Sentinel's plan to teleport Cybertron to Eath and enslave humankind comes to fruition, Starscream later spots Sam and his girlfriend Carly, and sadistically pursues and toys with them, gloating of how much he'll enjoy killing them for all of Sam's tampering in the past. Luckily, between Sam, human military and some Autobot interference, Starscream gets an explosive device shoved right in his eye that explodes, killing him once and for all as the Earth is saved by the Autobots.

Mitigating features?

None to speak of, he has WIE listed on his character page but that's apparently from the comics—which are so full of Continuity Snarl that they're considered a separate canon and I'm not taking into account for this proposal lmao—and in the films themselves, he has nothing. He's a cowering, ambitious sadist, nothing more.

Heinousness?

Yeah, even for the high standard of the Bayformers franchise? Starscream is up to a lot. In the films themselves, he's the leader of the initial 'Con invasion that leads to all kinds of death across the planet, he's working to help Megs use the All-Spark to transform all machines into beasts that kill humans. In the sequel, he tries to help the Fallen wipe out the sun and humanity, in the process taking Sam's parents hostage. In the thirdquel, he plays a big role in the takeover of Chicago, kills plenty more innocents, and is trying to help Sentinel enslave the human race. All of this is already putting 'Scream close to passing the general standard when he's got his hands (claws? Mandibles?) in that many evil pies.

Then you throw in the prequel and interquel novels, where he kills the crew of the Ghost after cruelly trying to force the Autobots to, and then later tries to flood Zambia and wrecks Rome, with an explicit intended bodycount in the hundreds of thousands? And yeah, he's well over the line.

Final Verdict?

Yes yes and yes, happy to finally get a version of my favorite villain up.

[tup] The Starscream.

Also, I might as well finally start on my EPs. This one is an easy keeper so I'll keep it short.

What's the Work?

Oddrietta is an Explorer Horror game by the creator of Phantoms in the Camp, which was already proposed from. You play as Harriet, a deaf woman who lost her hearing and her father in a car accident which lets her hear strange things no one else can, which is what got her the mean nickname Odrietta from her peers. Long story short, the city becomes enveloped in a wind that makes a noise turning everyone who hears it into horrible monsters, with Henrietta having to discover the cause.

Who is Henry? What Has He Done?

The Big Bad Henry is an evil Alternate Self of Henrietta from another universe who somehow traveled to this one and fell in narcissistic lust with his other self. He became friends with Henrietta when they were kids, in the hopes of invoking a Childhood Friend Romance. When she was 12, he started stalking her, killed her puppy, and caused the accident that got her daddy killed by jumping in front of their car (which is implied to have been purposeful since he wouldn't let her see Henrietta). He then somehow got the power to create the wind that turned everyone into monsters, including Henrietta's mom and deceased dad, and traps Henrietta in an endless loop where every time she dies, she is resurrected and brought back to the beginning of the game, intending to break down her resistance until she agrees to marry him.

There are three endings. Henrietta can either give in and become his bride, and she outright says she's only doing it so he'll stop tormenting her; she can refuse, in which case he kills her and sends her back to the beginning of the loop; or, she realizes that, as an alternate version of him, she has control over the wind as well, and so stabs him and wipes him out, then fixes everything.

Is He Bad Enough?

He turns an entire city into a Yume Nikki-esque hellscape and everyone in it into horrible monsters, with Henrietta's dad in particular clearly suffering, after having killed Henrietta's dad and dog beforehand, and goes out of his way to psychologially torment his "true love". It's a standalone game with no indication of it being in the same universe as Phantoms or any of the creator's other games. Pass.

Mitigating Qualities?

To put it simply, despite his sweet talk, his "love" for Henrietta is never portrayed as anything but possessive desire. He outright says he loves her because she's another version of him, making it come across as narcissism, and he is willing to put the woman he "loves" through absolute hell with no remorse, only feels bad when she rejects him, and disregards her feelings. Despite her clear distress and unwillingness in the ending where she marries him, he just brings up how happy it makes him feel. Other than that, nothing.

Verdict?

Easiest keeper I've ever done.

[tup] Starscream. Alright, how’s this, everyone?

Cursa then went on to pollute multiple different worlds with Darkmess, causing destruction and mayhem. Cursa then attacks the Mushroom Kingdom and mind-controlled all of Bowser’s minions. Cursa later absorbed the life out of the three Sparks and swiftly killed said Sparks in the process. Once Rosalina finally manages to break free of Cursa’s control, Cursa takes on a new form so that it can finally kill Mario, Rosalina, and their allies. Cruel and downright malicious, Cursa stands out as one of Mario’s most evil, petty, and sadistic foes.

Here's my rewrite for Cursa:

Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope: Cursa, the physical reincarnation of the MegaBug, born from a fragment of the latter absorbing stellar matter and becoming sapient, planned to destroy the universe by covering it in darkness. To this end, Cursa attacks the Comet Observatory, causing the Rabbids and Lumas to fuse into Sparks and Cursa to possess Rosalina. After taking over Rosalina’s body, Cursa decides to absorb the life out all of the Sparks across the universe and kill them so that it could break Rosalina’s hope—purely out of spite—and so it can retain control over her. Cursa goes on to pollute multiple different worlds with darkness, causing destruction and mayhem, and brainwash all of Bowser's minions. Cursa later absorbed the life out of the three Sparks and swiftly killed its own Spark Hunters. Cruel and downright malicious, Cursa stands out as one of Mario's most evil, petty, and sadistic foes.

I'm not familiar with this game, so if there are any further tweaks that could be made, let me know!

EDIT: @Fireball [nja]'d me, but what do you think?

Yeah, not "cheating" at all IMO, the comics go really fucky in continuity while the tie-in novels are pretty consistent with the flicks. There's a reason Shockwave, for instance, is only listed in the comic and not connected to the films. Or that we have two versions of the Fallen.

Yes to Henry.

Alright, cool. And yes to Starscream then.

Will he just go at the top of the tree?

EDIT: As for Cursa, I'm pretty adamant about potholing "the Mega Bug" to the first game.

Yes to henry and Starscream.

Given that transformers has it own page for Continuity Snarl, this Honestly seems more straightforward.
