Note: This thread was proposed by Berrenta, who gave permission to make the thread.

Gag Words, in essence, is supposed to be about words being used as a Running Gag. However, there are plenty of examples that lack context and/or fit better in Inherently Funny Words, making it a duplicate either way.

After coming across this page, I noticed a lot of such examples on the trope's page. As for the wicks?

After checking 19 wicks, the results are as follows:

  • Correct: 5/19 (26%)
  • Remarked as just funny: 2/19 (11%)
  • ZCE: 10/19 (53%)
  • Other misuse: 1/19 (5%)note
  • Not applicable: 1/19 (5%)

My proposed solution will be to merge into Running Gag and move any salvageable examples there or Inherently Funny Words. Whether it should redirect or be cut afterwards, I can go either way.

Patiently awaiting the release of Paper Luigi and the Marvelous Compass.

Paging ~Berrenta to the thread.

Anyway, the low wick count points toward this being The Same, but More Specific, so disambiguate between Running Gag and Inherently Funny Words.

Turn into a page of other links one can go to see similar tropes, in which said page isn't linked anywhere on the wiki save for specific places. As in, disambig

Considering the low wicks and inbounds, is it really necessary to create a disambig? Seems better to just cut.

Let's waive the Three-Day Rule for this one. The purpose of disambiguating would be to strip it of its trope status while preserving inbounds, so it would still basically be a cut.

Archiving the wick check and closing:

This sandbox serves as a wick check for Gag Words.

The issue

Gag Words, by definition, are words treated like a Running Gag.

The majority of on-page examples lack context. Some can overlap with Inherently Funny Word.

Due to low wick count, all wicks will be checked!

Unchecked so far:

Checked wicks:

     Correct use (5/ 19 = 26%)
These items properly identify the words as a Running Gag.
  1. Literature.Dave Barry Slept Here: All the mentions of THE HAWLEY-SMOOT TARIFF:
"Quite frankly, we have no idea what this is, but we think it has a wonderful ring to it, and we just like to see it in large bold letters: THE HAWLEY-SMOOT TARIFF."
"Nevertheless, [Franklin Roosevelt] began immediately to combat the Depression, implementing a series of bold and sweeping new programs that came to be known, collectively, as THE HAWLEY-SMOOT TARIFF."
  2. Main.Overused Running Gag: Dave Barry: "No! Sorry! That's it for the Hawley-Smoot tariff, you have our word." This counts.
  3. RunningGag.Literature: Dave Barry: Dave Barry Slept Here includes several running gags... The later chapters have the Gag Words "The Hawley-Smoot Tariff," and at several points the end of Richard Nixon's political career is widely predicted.
  4. Series. The Glass House: Corinne first used the word 'wadge' towards the end of the series.
Corinne (to Lauren Burns): What about that time you were kicked in the wadge?
Wil: ... you were kicked in the popular Channel 10 comedy program?
    • The word then became a running joke for the remainder of the episode, and was sprinkled throughout the subsequent, final episodes of the series.
Dave: I haven't got a wadge, but if I had a wadge I wouldn't want a shin in my wadge.
  5. TabletopGame.Warhammer Age Of Sigmar; The Stormcast Eternals storm things stormingly with their stormhammers just as much as Space Wolves wolf things wolfishly with their wolfguns. And the Fyreslayers set things on fire in fiery manner with their flaming firestaffs.
     Just sounds funny (2/ 19 = 11%)
These items have context indicating they would fit Inherently Funny Word better.
  1. CalvinAndHobbes.Tropes D To I: In one story arc where Calvin and Hobbes are playing with modelling clay, Hobbes demands that Calvin give him a smock to wear (actually one of his dad's business suits). Hobbes ends up getting sidetracked by the smock for a while, and thinks it's just an Inherently Funny Word.
Hobbes: Smock, smock, smock, smock, smock, smock!
Calvin: WHAT ON EARTH IS WRONG WITH YOU?!
  2. WesternAnimation.Kung Fu Panda Legends Of Awesomeness: In 'Jailhouse Panda', according to Po, Tigress dry-heaves when she hears the word 'slurp'. When he points that out while trying to prove that he was the real Po, she does.
     ZCE (10/ 19 = 53%)
As the folder name indicate, these are ZCE's.
  1. Creator.Dave Barry: Usually a new one in every column. Such as
  2. ComicStrip.Peanuts:
    • Starting in the late 70s, "Zamboni".
    • Petaluma note
  3. DarthWiki.Jinji Zaiaku: ? Anything in English. commented out
  4. Magazine.Mad:
    • Fake Band: In 1959, a novelty record was released with the credit "Alfred E. Neuman and his Furshlugginer Five", a series of uncredited musicians. The A-side is a novelty song titled "What, Me Worry?", with an uncredited man singing in the role of Alfred, and the B-side is an instrumental piece called "Potrzebie".
    • "Fershlugginer" and "potrzebie" top the list.
  5. Main.Beach Kiss: This rather crowded beach scene is how the MAD parody From Eternity Back to Here represented the movie's Signature Scene. (This was one of the earliest appearances in MAD of the Gag Word "potrzebie".)
  6. Main.Character Name And The Noun Phrase: Dave Barry Slept Here has a list of fifties rock bands which includes "Buster and the Harpoons" and "Bill Hawley and the Smoots".
  7. Main.Speak Of The Devil: Freakazoid!: "Interesting Fact: If you spin around while saying Huggbees three times real quick, Pierre Salinger will appear. Only he'll have... a beard!"
  8. Podcast.Muggle Cast: Pickles! commented out
  9. Series. The Monkees: "Frodis" and "Kretch" show up a few times.
  10. WesternAnimation.Recess: "Whomp" commented out
     Other misuse (1/ 19 = 5%)
  1. Series.Hong Gil Dong: In 2008, The Hong Sisters decided to try their hand at a sa geuk, or historical drama. Being who they are, however, their attempt morphed into an anachronistic comedy littered with toilet humor, gag words, and ridiculous puns. Hong Gil Dong (쾌도 홍길동, lit. Sharp Blade Hong Gil Dong) is the result. weird un-usage of wikiword
     Not applicable (1/ 19 = 5%)
These wicks would not apply to any of the above, such as indices.
