YMMV.Smile 2022 has three signature scenes

  • Signature Scene:
    • Laura's Slasher Smile right before a self-inflicted Slashed Throat, which is the central image of the film's publicity. Very much helped by how the actress absolutely nails both the smile (having probably the best one in the movie) and the dissonantly calm behavior to go with it.
    • The scene where the Entity imitates Rose's sister and walks up to her car window, detaching its head from its neck to smile at Rose.
    • The ending where the Entity's true form is revealed.

As you can see the last one is spoilered, but I'd argue it is the scariest scene in the movie. What do you guys think should stay though?

The second one, because that's the scene that made people want to watch the movie... according to many an internet comment

The first one really describes a shot rather than a scene

I recently watched kung pow for the first time and was looking over its pages

Kung Pow! Enter the Fist

Speaking from personal experience i had never once heard anything about the cow fight scene prior to watching the movie. I had seen the "we trained him incorrectly" bit and the scene where the chosen one gets beaten up with sticks.

This may just be my experience though, what do you guys think? Is the cow fight the signature scene?

I just Googled "kung pow famous scene" and the first result was literally titled "Cow Fight Scene", so I believe the example is valid. However, it's a Zero-Context Example since it doesn't explain why the scene is famous to begin with. You should hide the example for now.

From YMMV.Raiders Of The Lost Ark:

All of these are low on context, but I feel like the best choice to keep here is definitely the boulder chase. Lots of people nowadays think of Indiana Jones as "that guy who runs away from giant boulders". I can also see a case for keeping the face-melting scene thanks to the Visual Effects of Awesome example on the page saying it was the most discussed moment from the film when it first came out.

Proposed rewrite:

Jujutsu Kaisen lists a lot

  • Signature Scene:
    • Sukuna vs the Special Grade Curse. "Surprisingly, you and I are both classified as Special Grade. Good job, you and me, man."
    • The first Gojo vs Jogo fight, specifically the moment the former removes his blindfold and activates his Unlimited Void, completely suppressing the latter's Domain Expansion.
    • Junpei's nightmarish death at the hands of Mahito, with Mahito and Sukuna laughing at Yuji's suffering, culminating in the latter punching Mahito.
    • After the above mentioned scene, Nanami and Itadori jumping Mahito and beating him up.
    • Yuji and Toudou vs Hanami, showing off the studio's art budget as well as Yuji and Toudou's brotherly bond.
    • The entire sequence with Gojo's Hollow Purple.
    • Eso and Kechizu ambushing Nobara and Itadori and the subsequent fight.
    • The Shibuya Incident is by far the most well-regarded arc in the series and as such it has plenty of moments to choose from.
      • Sukuna vs Jogo is more-or-less iconic in the fanbase for being an awesome display of the former's sheer overwhelming power and sadistic personality. While Jogo is incredibly powerful in his own right, he's framed as the underdog who fails to get even a single hit in on Sukuna. And despite being a misanthropic curse through-and-through, Jogo receives a shockingly poignant sendoff, with Sukuna of all people regarding him as a Worthy Opponent before killing him.
      • Yuji vs Mahito is a strong contender for the best fight in the series. The fight starts off with Yuji at his single lowest moment in the entire series, before witnessing Mahito kill Nanami and possibly Nobara. Right before Yuji falls into despair and is killed by Mahito, Todo arrives to save him, and the two of them take on Mahito in a tag-team battle. Mahito does not go down without a fight, even taking Todo's hand in the process. Ultimately, however, Mahito is defeated, at which point Yuji actively agrees with Mahito's "Not So Different" Remark, coming to the realization that he's nothing more than a cog in a machine, and that he's going to continue killing curses for as long as he lives.

Im personally not convinced that any of these truly count as signature scenes, what do y'all think?

From YMMV.Justice League XRWBY Super Heroes And Huntsmen comes this:

  • Signature Scene: All scenes that involves Jaune and Jessica are loved by fans. But the one scene that stands out the most is the one where Jaune encourages and supports Jessica to break out from a sealed room which its walls closing in to squash them, with her reciting the Green Lantern oath as the icing on the cake.

This might be a significant scene for the fandom and Green Lantern fans in particular, but it seems to be shared amongst people familiar with the film rather than wider than people who have watched the film. Is that enough for it to be a Signature Scene?

If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading.

[up] I don't think so. I typed the name of the work and "Jessica Cruz scene" on Google and none of the top results were about that scene. I would move the example to Moment of Awesome, if it's not already there.

Unsure if this has been brought up before, but I want to bring up the examples from The Last of Us Part II:

  • Signature Scene:
    • Abby killing Joel with an extended beatdown by golf club is easily one of the game's most discussed moments.
    • The flashback to Ellie’s 16th birthday with Joel, due to being the closest the game gets to its predecessor’s hopeful feeling with Joel and Ellie’s bond. Even former fans of the IP have admitted to this being one of its highlights.
    • Both of the fights between Ellie and Abby count. The first one is known for its Player Punch of playing as Abby to fight Ellie. The second one is known for its emotional impact and tense, climactic atmosphere.
    • The fight with The Rat King.

Of the above examples, I really only think examples 1 and 3 should stay, though the examples themselves may need a little more clarification. Joel's death and The final fight betweeen Ellie and Abby where Ellie decides to let Abby go are the two scenes which absolutely dominate the discussion surrounding the game, and these are the two scenes people point to when discussing why they either love or hate the game. Example 2 is a praised scene, yes, but also doesn't tend to get talked about much, and the 4th example is a ZCE and also not quite as widely known and discusses.

[up] Definitely. If I hear haters talking about Ellie's birthday at all it's always along the lines of "This was the ONE GOOD SCENE in this FLAMING DUMPSTER FIRE THAT DARES TO CALL ITSELF A SEQUEL TO"—etc, but it's not nearly as talked about as the other two. The Rat King, if you know enough about it, could probably be expanded into a Best Boss Ever example, since no one ever bashes the gameplay of TLOU2 and they always focus entirely on the story since the gameplay is razor-tight.

It's not about the gold; it's about the glory.

Going back to the Jujutsu Kaisen examples mentioned above, I started watching the show recently and I stand by my assessment that none of the examples listed are valid.

If there's something that would actually count... what comes to mind is the second Gojo vs. Toji fight, when Gojo goes "Throughout heaven and Earth, I alone am the honored one" before blasting Toji away with Hollow Purple. But even then it's mostly the quote that's iconic, so it might be more fitting under Signature Line.

From YMMV.Spec Ops The Line:

  • Signature Scene:
    • The first hint that the game is going in a new direction is when you wander around Dubai and suddenly you hear Deep Purple's "Hush" blare through the sands, mostly because the song's style and music is so unexpected and atypical for a setting and genre like this.
    • The white phosphorus incident is pretty much the defining moment of the game, mainly because of being a massive Player Punch and the moment where the Genre Shift and the real point of the story (that the guy you are playing is pretending to be someone he is not, a hero...and so are you) lights up.
    • The ending of the game, particularly when the now-revealed-to-be-imaginary Konrad holds Walker at gunpoint as the latter pleads for mercy.

Of these, it is objectively correct to say that the white phosphorus example is the only correct one. It's by far the most memorable and discussed part of the game (for better or for worse).

YMMV.Godzilla Minus One had four signature scenes. Even the attempted loophole of "well, technically it can have more than one if different people have different interpretations of what's signature" doesn't apply since none of them were added solo.

Discussion page here.

I also note that the examples as-written generally fail to establish the "signature" part, instead just describing the scene. The same writeups could be transposed into a Crowning Moment with no changes and be equally valid.

[up] Has no context and was written to gush. The fact the person who wrote it marked it as a spoiler is also a big indicator of misuse, since Signature Scenes are, by definition, moments that everyone knows about.

[up] As someone who watched the show and regularly interacts with the show's fandom, trust me when I say that particular line is mostly remembered for... all the wrong reasons. I think it's a safe cut.

Found these in YMMV.The Apothecary Diaries

  • Signature Scene:
    • The scene at the garden party where Maomao tastes some of Gyokuyou's soup (technically Lishu's due to Kanan swapping their bowls) and determines that it contains poison. A version of this scene was used heavily in the promotional material for the anime. not sure
    • The entirety of the temple sequence is lauded as the best episode in the adaptation. It also served as one of the best examples of Adaptation Expansion done well as Jinshi carrying the unconscious Maomao is a scene that was mentioned to have happened in both the Light Novel and manga, but the anime does a two-minute sequence of actually showing it happening. The fact that it is spoilered out means that is not as "signature" as this entry claims

[up] I'd only cut the second example. The first one describes the scene and explains why it's well-known, so it's fine as far as I can tell.

From Fantasia. This one is tricky, since the film is a collection of shorts.

  • Signature Scene:
    • The "Sorcerer's Apprentice" segment, especially Mickey's dream sequence in which he controls the stars in the nighttime sky.
Lacks context. Proposed rewrite: Mickey's dream sequence in the "Sorcerer's Apprentice" segment, in which he controls the stars in the nighttime sky, is not only one of the film's most famous scenes, but also one of the most well-known images to be associated with the character. It is always featured in TV commercials, DVD covers and promotional material, and also gets referenced often in other media. As an example, Kingdom Hearts 3D [Dream Drop Distance] famously recreated the scene for its opening cinematic.
    • Also, the following sequence in which Mickey shakes hands with Stokowski. The scene is also commemorated in a bronze statue in the lobby of Disney's Contemporary Resort in Walt Disney World.
Indentation needs to be fixed, but I think it's fine otherwise.
    • "Night on Bald Mountain", highly remembered not only for the nightmarish imagery with ghosts and demons dancing about, but for also introducing Chernabog.
Chernabog is popular, no question. But this trope is called Signature Scene. Listing an entire short as an example may be beyond its scope.
    • "Waltz of the Flowers" is often the most remembered segment of the Nutcracker segment (alongside "Chinese dance", but for different reasons). The particular segment where the pixies ice-skate in "Winter", or the snow-fairies were frequently used in advertisements of the film in The '90s and the Turn of the Millennium.
    Fine.
    • Also from "The Nutcracker", the Russian Dance scene - though "Russian Dance" also somewhat doubles as a Signature Scene for "The Nutcracker".
Lacks context. In my opinion, not quite as famous as the other examples.
    • The Tyrannosaurus versus Stegosaurus scene from the "Rite of Spring" segment, enough that it features as an animatronic at the tail-end of the Disneyland Railroad's Primeval World segment and in Epcot's former Universe of Energy attraction.
    Fine.

What do you think?
