Pulled to discuss:

  • Signature Scene: It has several.
    • An unmutated Godzilla attacking Odo Island and killing most of the garrison in the beginning.
    • Godzilla chasing the Shinsei Maru, due to being a very unique action sequence in the franchise, and which many highlighted for its stellar effects.
    • Godzilla attacking and destroying the Takao cruiser ship.
    • Godzilla's on-screen use of his Atomic Breath in Ginza, including the charge sequence and the horrific mushroom cloud from the aftermath of it, for being one of the rare instances of his Breath Weapon being played effectively for horror, and being shockingly destructive when compared to previous incarnations. It also serves as a pivotal moment in the movies narrative, as Noriko seemingly dies just when she's starting to get through to Shikishima, cementing his desire to go on a suicidal revenge quest.

It's not "popular scenes in a movie" it's Signature Scene so we have to whittle it down to a single one, rather than listing all the popular scenes.

For my money, I think that has to go to the Ginza Atomic Breath scene. It's the scene that people who haven't seen the movie know about and probably the single most pivotal scene in the movie.

That said, I could be convinced the boat chase is better known since it comes earlier and is also widely talked about. But I do think most non-fans know about the scene where Godzilla shoots nuclear fire more than the boat chase.

The other two don't even come close for consideration. Great scenes all, but to the layperson they're not super well known.

Technically speaking, signature scene is not limited to one scene so long as the examples are proposed by different tropers

Also, there is a dedicated signature scene cleanup thread which would probably be a better place to discuss this. People don't usually browse page discussions.

I see, well take those into consideration. I figured they be just as well-known as the scene in Ginza.

^^ You're technically correct, but even that loophole doesn't apply since all the signature scenes were added two at a time.

Also noting that the writeups are also technically lacking sufficient context: they're just describing the scenes, and not the, you know, signature part.

I crossposted with this thread, but it's not really worthwhile since we know what the problem is and presumably this page would be better suited to determining what is actually the "signature" scene.

So, I'm pulling this to discuss:

  • Memetic Mutation:
    • Godzilla hates "woke" movies.note
      • "I EAT WOKE MOVIES FOR BREAKFAST!"note

Is this really a meme? As it says, it's only a small amount of Youtube reviewers and they're presumably the type to insist "Go woke go broke" no matter what. Anti-woke crowd says what they always say doesn't sound like much of a meme, you know?

EDIT: Okay, looked at the edit reasons of the troper trying to readd this and they really come across as desperately trying to come across as a weird victory for conservatism. Randomly turning this page into a battleground for a made up culture war doesn't help anyone.

I would argue that it actually is a valid YMMV item. I don't care much for the petceived " culture war" one way or the other, there is an increasingly noticeable dichotomy between how Western Hollywood makes their movies- be it in terms of budgeting, narrative decisions, and indeed even messaging- and what audiences resonate with, all of which are aspects visible with this film. A A YMMV page is meant to represent the varying opinions and thoughts surrounding a movie, and for better or worse the fact this movie puts most of modern hollywood to shame has become a prevalent part part of the discussion, not just a fringe opinion. If you're afraid of it being Flame Bait you can word it a bit more neutrally, but frankly that already was the case. I say just re-add it and leave it be, no one will make a big deal of it.

Okay... even assuming this "noticeable dichotomy" exists (which is an insane concession I'm making for the sake of argument given the nature of reality), I'm having trouble relating that to the cut entry. YMMV pages are here for documenting audience reactions, not making arguments.

The entry itself was claiming only a small number of Youtube reviewers, not a significant portion of the audience. The question isn't "is Godzilla Minus One the representative of a paradigm shift against the Hollywood movie machine?"note , it's "is this a real meme or is someone trying to trying to force a meme for their agenda?
