Character Page Cleanup

Go To

Character pages are a large chunk of the wiki, but they're often filled with problems that don't get resolved. These problems include:

  • Zero Context Examples
  • Indentation problems, including bulleting tropes under supertropes or tropeslashing
  • Spoiler tag misuse
  • A lack of alphabetization
  • Empty character folders
  • Plagiarized character descriptions
  • Misused tropes, or tropes that don't belong on character pages
  • Broken or incorrect formatting
  • Subjective / Trivia trope mentions

Per How to Create a Character Page, character pages should only include tropes that describe the characters. These tropes should fall under Characterization Tropes or one of its related indexes, Unless they're recurring character traits (distinctive things that the character does repeatedly). If you're unsure what counts as a character trope, you can ask about that at Are These Character Tropes.

All characters must have at least one contextualized trope for their section or folder to be visible. If you find a character that has no contextualized tropes present, comment out the entire section and add this tag:

%% As per Administrivia/HowToCreateACharacterPage, every character must have at least one listed trope that's not a Administrivia/ZeroContextExample. All characters who don't meet this requirement have been commented out. Add more tropes or add more context to any existing ZCE tropes before uncommenting them.

[up][up] I saw the page myself, and yeah, it's weird. Personally, this is how the page should go instead of what's currently displayed:

Main Character Index | Super Hero Girls and Super Villain Girls | Other Characters
Characters who appear in the animated series. For characters who appear in the original web-series continuity, look here.

But if I were to go with a more "realistic" approach (as in giving the other teams their own sub-pages), It'll be a little something like this:

Heroes

  • Super Hero Girls (and Harley Quinn)
  • Invinci-Bros
  • Supporting Heroes/Characters (Lois Lane, Jimmy Olson, James Gordon, John Zatara, Eliza and Jeremiah Danvers, Queen Hippolyta, the Justice League)
  • Other Heores (Katana, Rose Wilson, Tween Titans, Krypto, Ace, Alfred)

Villains

  • Super Villain Girls
  • Recurring/Story-important Antagonists (Lex Luthor, Cheetah, Joker, General Zod, Bizarro Supergirl, Cythonna)
  • Other Antagonists (The Penguin, Mr. Freeze, Lena Luthor, Deathstroke, etc.)

Others/Miscellaneous

  • Residents of Metropolis
(Assuming the byte counter would be that long, given that most of folders are very small)

I don't understand why Harley Quinn is listed as a member of the Superhero Girls. She spends 99% of the show as a member of the Supervillain Girls, and only joins the heroes at the end of the final movie (not to mention that her changing side is a pretty huge spoiler).

We could make a Spoilers Off Character-Specific Page of her, but that would require the character's folder being made up of 40,000 and more gigabytes. And as someone who stopped watching DCSHG around late 2021 I don't know how big her folder is, but I doubt its any longer than 2,000 bytes. The least we can do is move her back to the SVG header and add "(UNMARKED SPOILERS)" on the top of her folder.

I agree that we should move Harley to the SVG.

I also think it's better to have one page for the heroes, one for the villains and one for the other characters. This is what most other franchises do and it makes much more sense.

The character page for Rock Paper Scissors (the TV show, not the webcomic) is just a description saying "This is all the characters of Rock, Paper, Scissors", which hasn't been updated since it was created. I hope no-one minds if I send this to the cut list?

On an unrelated note, I think we should disambiguate this series from the namesake Trope and webcomic.

If we discuss character moves here, there's one from Warcraft, Ebyssian, who is currently under Warcraft The Horde Highmountain, but after recent events in the game I think he should be moved to Warcraft The Dragonflights since he is now the leader of the Black Dragons.

[up] Its probably best to cut the subpage and move all of the examples to a sandbox.

Also, there's a topic of a certain miHoYo Gacha that I brung up in previous discussions, but didn't have the chance to mention it on this thread now: Honkai Impact 3rd.

Two months ago, I mentioned on the Discussion page for the game's character index that's its weird how none of the names for playable characters are displayed in bold in the main index, despite their character folders indicating their names in that font type.

Unfortunately, most of my comments went nowhere; the people who replied thought I was referring to the character pages instead of the index or questioning why the characters should have their names displayed in bold to begin with. So I thought posting here would be a good idea.

Moving back to the subject, I just want to note that not every Gacha game indicated their playable characters in bold; Fate/Grand Order, Arknights, Girls' Frontline, Azur Lane, Goddess of Victory: NIKKE, and even MHY's own Zenless Zone Zero displayed their characters names normally. But those games are different; each playable character is sorted by their faction and/or class, hence why they don't have their names in bold. Meanwhile, games that sort their characters by their home world, organization, or faction, like Punishing: Gray Raven, Counter Side, and the aforementioned Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail do. Additionally, games of the latter category have their playable characters listed alongside NPCs and other important non-playable characters, while games of the former category have their playable and non-playable characters sorted separately from each other (the playable characters usually go by their faction/class, while the NPCs go by their organization).

In Honkai's case, each of the playable characters are grouped by whatever foundation or homeland they originated from, were hired for, or joined in, like an educational institutionnote , an organizationnote , a teamnote , a century-old timelinenote , an alternate universenote  or even crossing over from their home series for a brief amount of timenote . Each of which are grouped alongside the non-playable characters, like Kevin for World Serpent, Cocolia for Cocolia Orphanage, or the four male MANTISes for Fire MOTH.

In conclusion, I think it's okay to designate the playable characters in bold as long as their grouped with the non-playable ones, or otherwise it'll cause a confusing mess of who's playable or not. Sorry if this has gone longer than expected, but I think I have made my point.

[up] The "bolding playable characters' names" isn't something I've seen before in general (though I don't really follow many character pages), but it seems like a reasonable-enough way of simply and clearly conveying useful information to the reader. And since a mod on the discussion page you linked didn't seem to object to the practice, it seems like it's probably okay to format things that way.

Now that my train of thought has caught up to yours, I agree that the names of playable characters on Characters.Honkai Impact3rd should be bolded, too. That way, they're consistent with the subpages, and it also lets people see which characters are playable or not all on one page, instead of having to visit every subpage to check.

If anyone has some time, I could use some help hiding trope-less sections and folders on the subpages of Characters.Kaiserreich Legacy Of The Weltkrieg and Characters. The New Order Last Days Of Europe. I'll keep trying to chip away at em, but some of these are ridiculous. The giant blocks of text from the "in-game biographies" (are we even allowed to put those on TV Tropes?) really bloat the number of lines to comment out, too.

Edit: here's the commented-out note I've been putting at the tops of these pages:
%% From Administrivia/HowToCreateACharacterPage - Remember: Each example needs to follow the normal Zero-Context Example guidelines. If a character does not have at least one non-ZCE trope, they should not be on the page.

Any thoughts on Characters. The Traitors and Characters. The Traitors US?

(Be warned: both are spoilers off)

At first glance:

  • The US page needs folders and contestants with no tropes need to be commented out

  • The UK page has a lot of empty season 2 folders

Probably some other issues as well, as we know there are recurring problems with Reality Show "characters" drifting into real life (e.g. I think I saw an audience-judged Camp Gay for a contestant in there).

I'll have a proper look through later, but any assistance is much appreciated.

[up][up] Bolding character names seems to go against How to Create a Work Page, although there's no specific guidance on How to Create a Character Page.

My personal view is that we shouldn't be using bold, italic or coloured fonts to categorise characters snd deliver information. I think we should call out playable characters, but that may be best done via text.

But that's just my opinion, and we should probably get a consensus on this stuff and update Administrivia.

~Willowleaf 24

Those biographies look excessive, and hiding them in notes isn't the usual Characters page approach.

Do we know if that wording is directly copied from the game itself? If so, that will fall foul of the plagiarism rules and we will need to take some action.

On a different note -

As part of the wider Reality Show cleanup, I had an initial sweep through Characters. The Traitors and Characters. The Traitors US, mostly looking at folders and formatting.

The US is now in this format for the contestant intros, as the bold and -> indent seems to be widely used on Characters pages:

(no real info or spoilers)

    Bob

Bob

Ranking: 9th Place (4th banishment)
Age: 77
Alignment: Traitor

I'd made much the same changes on the UK page, but ~Cookie Cute 516 has now reverted them to this layout, with --> and \\ formatting for a deeper indent, and without the bold.

     Roderick
Ranking: Winner
Age: 22
Occupation: Undertaker
Alignment: Faithful
——

I haven't gone through full page history, but I don't think this is an edit war. It could use some agreement on the best option, though.

So, is there a preference on layout for these? If we can get a consensus, we can apply it to both pages.

Thanks!

Though, looking at the page, there appears to be some real life troping that needs to be cut.

That too. Reality shows are a grey area, but we seem to have a (tentative) consensus that NRLEP tropes related to things like identity and appearance only get listed if they're mentioned within the work in a way that's relevant to the 'character'.

The other thing that generally tends to happen with those shows is that, if people are listed in elimination order, we list the first eliminated at top of the page. That way anyone seeing the spoiler warning has a chance to quit before seeing who won the whole season. This one's in the opposite order, so (spoilers!) the winner's name is top. There's a suggestion that we reverse that.

Apologies if I’ve started an edit war, I was just trying to keep the page consistent, as during your initial sweep you had only used that formatting for the Season 1 contestant folders! I only reverted that to keep the page consistent. Sorry for the misunderstanding there.

I do like the bold to be honest, but I also like the deep indent format as well. I assume we’re ruling out blending the two, and I believe if it would keep it consistent across both versions of the Traitors contestant pages, we should go with the bold formatting you tried to implement.

I do agree with your last point about reversing the order of the folders though. I always thought that was weird whenever I came to the page.

[up] No problem. The bold's now in place, and I'll try to reverse the order today.

On a different note, Characterization Tags is very clear that the "Future!Hiro" & 1975!Doc approach to multiple character versions is banned on the wiki, as they're confusing for casual readers.

Unless considerably more context is added (and any other ZCE issues aside), I think the same ban should be true of examples like this one:

  • Age Lift: Peter-6160 is older than Peter-616 by about a decade.

That's from ComicBook.Ultimate Spider Man 2024 - as the page intro mentions, the Alternate Universe it's set in is "Earth-6160" and Marvel's main Spider-Man comics are "Earth-616".

(At the moment, both of those are All in the Manual facts that are never mentioned in the comic itself)

But even if the intro explains this, it loses that context in crosswicking. Can we get a broad agreement that this sort of shorthand should be treated as if it was a Characterization Tag and avoided on wiki pages?

For the example above, my first thought would be something like this:

  • Age Lift: The Peter Parker starring in Ultimate Spider-Man is significantly older than the original Marvel Universe version of the character. The first issue mentions that it's set twenty years after the teenage Peter Parker should have gained his powers and become a superhero - which didn't happen in this world due to the Maker's tampering.
