Re: Shirley. The "some" in some modern audiences who were uncomfortable about the things the actress went through during her childhood. is very much a giant red flag that we are looking at a shoehorned example. It also doesn't really look like a Controversy.

It's not even the only Lone Ranger movie to be OBC. 1981's The Legend of the Lone Ranger is best known for the PR nightmare that resulted from the producers' ugly and very public legal battle with Clayton Moore, who played the ranger in the 1950s TV series. Maybe we could make a tree for Lone Ranger movies.

The Shirley Temple thing could be Values Dissonance or Unfortunate Implications if there's proof that people actually think it has pedophilic undertones.

My proposed Lone Ranger tree:

  • The Lone Ranger movies:
    • The Legend of the Lone Ranger: Virtually everything else related to this movie is eclipsed in the popular consciousness by the producers attempting to prevent Clayton Moore — who was the Lone Ranger to many, having played him in the 1950s TV series — from appearing in public wearing the Ranger's trademark black mask, and the PR nightmare and ugly legal battle that resulted.
    • The Lone Ranger (2013): More than any marketing campaign, the film was in the spotlight about casting white actor Johnny Depp as Tonto. This announcement was hit with a firestorm of criticism, with many noting that The Legend of the Lone Ranger cast a Native American actor (Michael Horse) to play Tonto more than thirty years prior. Not helping matters was the fact that Tonto featured more heavily in the marketing than the Lone Ranger himself. Depp was given significant creative control about the character, and he has said he based the look of the character mainly on a single painting, "I am Crow" by Kirby Sattler. No Native American ever wore a dead bird on their head, and in the painting a crow is flying behind the head of the subject. Sattler himself is not a Native American, and openly says his paintings come from his imaginings and do not depict any specific native culture. With the whitewashed casting and open admissions of deliberate inaccuracy, it is not hard to see where the controversy came from.

Thoughts?

[up] Good stuff. Might also be with mentioning that the original Tonto from the '50s, Jay Silverheels, was also genuinely Native American.

So, should there be a note on the Real Life page to state that only politicians who aren't currently serving can be overshadowed?

Sorry to distract from the politicians discussion but we should look over OvershadowedByControversy.Channel Awesome to clean up the List of Transgressions entries (the whole Web Original page is a mess but this one is a good starting point). It's attracting edit warring over people shoehorning in any grievance they have about certain producers, which is a bad sign.

EDIT: Speaking of the Web Original page, let's look at this one:

  • The Mary Sue was once a respected hub for geeky news with a feminist bent, reaching particular prominence during the Depression Quest controversy, where it became known as one of the few sites where the subject could be discussed safely due to its active moderation. Its reputation started to decline with the departures of its founding staff, including Jill Pantozzi and Rebecca Pahle; the new regime, headed by Teresa Jusino, made heavy cutbacks to the site's features, attempted to move the site to a subscription model (ostensibly to pay for new features that never materialized), and became notorious for putting out articles with controversial takes, apparently for no other reason than to generate controversy and attract clicks (most famously, Jusino herself penned a piece defending the use of Bury Your Gays on The 100.)
    • Following Jusino's departure, the site came under the leadership of Jessica Mason and Rachel Leishman, whose personal peccadillos (Mason banned many of the site's longtime commenters for criticizing her, while Leishman constantly fawns over Tom Holland and calls him her "son") have overshadowed any discussion of the site's articles.
    • Further controversy arose in 2020, when in response to a question about terrible working conditions in digital media, Jill Pantozzi and Rebecca Pahle came forward and revealed that TMS had severely underpaid them, that parent company Abrams Media forced Pantozzi to do a video discussion on sister site Mediaite about Game of Thrones (in which Pantozzi was the designated feminist critic) and then failed to protect her from the inevitable flood of trolls, and that after Pantozzi and Pahle left, the editor who replaced them was paid even less than they were. Pantozzi summed up her feelings thusly: "On the outside, the appearance of The Mary Sue in the industry was one of wild success, a niche market being served to by talented writers and editors who knew what they were doing. Inside we were being taken advantage of and miserable. I wish I had left sooner."

The top entry I think is fine, but the two bullet points veer into gossipy List of Transgressions territory. I don't even see how all of this is "controversy," namely the fact that somebody...really likes Tom Holland? Is that controversial now? Pretty sure a ton of fangirls do that innocuously enough.

[down] They were already suspended for edit warring, which is what convinced me to bring this page here again.

That last bit of the entry for Lone Ranger 2013 seems like tacked on natter.

I did a bit of rewriting for this entry. Is this a bit better?

  • Overshadowed by Controversy: More than any marketing campaign, the film was overshadowed by the casting of white actor Johnny Depp as the Native American Tonto. This announcement was met with backlash, with many lamenting that both The Legend of the Lone Ranger and the original radio series cast Native Americans to play Tonto decades prior. It was made worse by Tonto featuring more heavily in the marketing than the Lone Ranger himself, with Depp being given significant creative control over the character, and basing the look of the character mainly on a inaccurate interpretation of a single painting, "I am Crow" by Kirby Sattler. (This is despite the original artist, who is not indigenous, openly saying that his paintings come from his imaginings and do not depict any specific native culture.)

This entry from Web Original rubbed me the wrong way.

  • DaftPina is a YouTube personality who specializies in critiquing other YouTubers and analizing YouTube drama in a very monotone voice. One of these critiques landed him in very hot water: more specifically, the one where he accused JaidenAnimations of lying about struggling with depression and bulimia in her face reveal video for money and attention, and played armchair psychologist by diagnosing her with several personality disorders based on some very flimsy and spurious evidence. Needless to say, this provoked a severe backlash and earned him a reputation as either an ignorant and overly cynical guy who doesn't understand other peoples' struggles or a borderline-sociopathic bully who enjoyed picking on people going through very dark periods in their life. While he would eventually take down the video, its specter continues to haunt his reputation and he may never fully recover from the firestorm it ignited.

Don't get me wrong. Daft's video was stupid. But he has since taken down the video and apologized to Jaiden personally, where she forgave him. He has not done anything similar to that since then. I cannot say that this controversy will hold him back forever, especially since it was nearly 4 years ago and his channel continues to grow to this day.

I think the "his reputation will probably never recover" bit falls into the realm of speculative troping, but the rest can stay with a little rewriting if it has indeed hurt his reputation somewhat.

I'm not sure about that. Most people have forgotten about the controversy, and his videos seemed to have improved since then, with him now being known as a pretty reputable commentator.

The Channel Awesome page is being bombarded by people who clearly have an agenda, mostly from people who are against Alison Pregler. Most of them reek of whataboutism and Guilt by Association. See if you actually agree with this.

  • Allison Pregler, a.k.a Obscurus Lupa, was removed from the site for (as she put it) being away from her computer during a Skype call she claimed she had no idea about beforehand. This led to Lupa's boyfriend, Phelan "Phelous" Porteous, leaving in protest. She's also known for leading the charge against Channel Awesome with the #ChangeTheChannel movement that eventually led to the near-complete exodus of contributors from the site following the administrator's rather back-handed apology and lack of communication outside of the bigger contributors and Doug's team. She's had to tell a Vocal Minority of the movement to not harass people in her name. This eventually came to a head when Brad Jones and his family were harassed by said vocal minority leading Brad to have a falling out with Allison. Allison also launched a series of tweets at Brad and the Walkers, which implied that Brad Jones was guilty of pedophilia due to his former association with Justin "JewWario" Carmical. Pregler also apologized for adding in the Applebee's allegation into the CTC document, saying it was a bad joke which distracted from the more serious allegations, since Doug Walker took her and Phelous to Subway after he realized that they were accidentally left behind once shooting of To Boldly Flee wrapped up. While Allison maintains her innocence in the harassment, several more incidents, including the death of Brad's cat Chloe being mocked by Phil Buni and Eric Rodriguez mocking the death of Laura Jones' father, have not helped the argument for many.

[up] It’s been around for probably since the page’s inception, but that particular entry has been the center of an edit war for about the past month.

ooh Since: Jul, 2012
#1549: Apr 17th 2021 at 3:21:52 PM

[up][up] The last sentence about Phil Buni and E-Rod has nothing to do with Pregler. If they are worthy of addition, they should be put on bullet points that have nothing to do with her. Pregler's critics act as if she's a de facto leader of the #ChangeTheChannel movement (though to be fair, she got the ball rolling), and therefore anything stupid said by her former Channel Awesome colleagues that left the company after the document came out is therefore her fault. Basically this is a reflection of this bias.

Also, I don't know where this stuff about Alison calling Brad Jones a pedophile solely because of his association with a pedophile came from, but I do know that Alison accused him of exposing himself in front of a child, and that's not even mentioned on this page (though it was at one point).

Either way, the whole page needs an overhaul.

It can very easily just be cut down to this:

  • Allison Pregler, a.k.a Obscurus Lupa, was removed from the site for (as she put it) being away from her computer during a Skype call she claimed she had no idea about beforehand. This led to Lupa's boyfriend, Phelan "Phelous" Porteous, leaving in protest. Nowadays, she's known for kickstarting the #ChangeTheChannel movement that exposed Channel Awesome's shady business practices (including Allison's firing) and led to the near-complete exodus of contributors from the site. The controversy also led to Allison cutting ties with several long-term colleagues, particularly Brad Jones. While she continues to make content on her own, many people still treat her as a "figurehead" of that movement, and she's even had to tell a Vocal Minority of the movement not to harass people in her name.

The rest of the controversies only matter to her cyberstalkers, really.
