Cleanup thread: Magnificent Bastard

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

     Previous post
IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

  • Why do a cleanup?: This trope definitely exists and has a well documented history of use. That being said, it frequently gets misused to a character who meets one of the components, namely that they are smart, charming while not necessarily even being a villain, or create good plans. While these are components, there is also a certain personality required, not to mention that all of the above are required to be present for a character to be a true Magnificent Bastard. As the trope attracts interest, it unfortunately brings in a lot of misuse and I thought the best way to rectify this would be a Perpetual Cleanup Thread, as is being done and has seen success with Complete Monster.

  • What makes a Magnificent Bastard: Below is a list of the individual components to make this character. Note that they must all be present, not just some, which has lead to frequent misuse:
    • Must be intelligent: Goes without saying, to be a Magnificent Bastard, the character has to be smart in the first place and use their brain to work towards whatever their end goal may be;
    • Must be a Bastard: While going overboard in how vile the character is can be detrimental, a key aspect is the Bastard part of the trope, whether the character is an out-and-out antagonist in the work, some manner of Villain Protagonist, or something in between, they at least have some unscrupulous qualities to qualify for this trope;
    • Must not be too detestable: Again, there is a ceiling on how bad the character can be before they just become too nefarious, blocking out the Magnificent part of the trope. A genocidal racist or child-raping Sadist aren't going to make the cut;
    • Think on their feet: In addition to being a Chessmaster, a Magnificent Bastard, if the character deals with situations in which their initial plan is ruined, has to be able to pull a Xanatos Speed Chess and at least come up with a competent strategy to make up for lost time, otherwise they fail for being unable to think in tough spots;
    • Have charm: Even if they don't necessarily make every character they meet fall in love with them and can even be detested by others, the audience has to find an amicable social relation to the character, or they are failing to make the impact required for this trope.

  • What to do if a character is listed on a page but has not been approved?: They need to be removed, all candidates need to come through the cleanup thread first. The character could well count but they need to be analyzed properly and voted on first.

  • Do we list Playing With this trope?: No; as a YMMV trope, this cannot be Played With, so we only want examples that are Played Straight.

  • What do I do if I want a character to be listed as a Magnificent Bastard?: The greatest success Complete Monster saw for its cleanup effort was from the invention of the effort post format, so, borrowing from that, a troper wishing to propose a Magnificent Bastard will create such a post in the following format:
    • Begin by describing The work, this will help establish the setting the character is in and for the reader to understand what kind of a scenario they are in;
    • Summarize The character's actions, this will provide a listing for readers to understand what they do and how it applies to this trope because charm and lack of smugness are so crucial, this is a good time to be incorporating exactly the flavor of how they operate to explain this;
    • List circumstances in which the character must Think on their feet, these are times where a wrench might be thrown in their initial plan and they have to adapt on the spot or even come up with a new scheme all together, this is also a good time to explain how the villain reacts to defeat when they have to face it, a true Magnificent Bastard won't break down into tears at the thought of death, they should have known such a possibility could occur and be able to handle it with more dignity;
    • The competition, similar to the Heinous Standard dealt with for a Complete Monster, this section is to deal with how successful the character is in carrying out their plans compared to other characters. While, as a villain, they probably are going to lose in the end, it is good to explain how other characters handle the same situation. There is no exceptionalism case to be made for this trope but explaining the variety helps the reader have a better understanding of the proposal.

  • How do you know when the character's arc is done so they can be proposed? When their tenure as a villain or antagonist finishes. This could happen in a single Story Arc in an entire work, a single work of a franchise, or the whole series in general. We'll show lenience to Long-Runners with constantly recurring candidates or series with outstanding continuities (ex. comic books), and it's entirely possible to count in a work or two but not in general for a reason like Depending on the Writer.

  • What about candidates evil because of external sources? Those Made of Evil can qualify if they show enough individuality and tactical acumen — in other words, they have the personality to fulfill the magnificence requirement. Conversely, those brainwashed, especially if they're a better person without it, may fail the individuality aspect and cannot count.

  • What if they are under orders from a higher-up? Depends. If the boss created the plans down to the letter and the candidate is just following them, sounds like we should discuss the boss instead. However, if the candidate takes creative liberties with the orders, adds their own charm and flair to them, fills in holes in the orders, and/or actively deals with obstacles their boss did not talk about, the candidate shows enough individual thinking to qualify.

  • What about Character Development? An MB is something a character can develop into... a nice person who plots well might become more morally gray as the work goes on and hits the "Bastard" criteria, thus making them viable. Likewise, a Smug Snake might shed their ego, become more understanding of the threat others pose and gain the personality or "Magnificent" criteria, likewise making them viable. Conversely, a character who looks like this trope might suffer from a Sanity Slippage or just get outed as not being as smart as they thought they were and become incompatible with MB.

  • Can an MB be a good guy? Not in the conventional sense... it is required they have at least some dubious traits lest they fail the "Bastard" criteria. That being said, a character who pulls a Heel–Face Turn or eventually stops taking villainous actions is still fair game: as there was a point in time where they were both "Magnificent" and a "Bastard" at the same time and they've merely adapted as time goes on. Now... if such a character begins showing other issues (i.e.: becomes prone to freak outs or starts getting outwitted) then they're compromising their Magnificence and will probably be deemed a cut. What's important is stylishly operating while at least for some time being willing to take at best underhanded methods to see a job done. A Heel–Face Turn in itself isn't a disqualifier but they do have to have been "Magnificent" and a "Bastard" at the same time and afterwards can't start slipping on the former front.

  • What about characters whose stories can take different routes?: When proposing a character in a form of media that has them in multiple story routes. Said character must be consistent with their characteristics in all routes. (ex.: Can't have an example who shows promise on one route yet fails in another.) The only exception is if a later installment of the series confirms the character's actions which made them worth proposing are the canon route.

  • Is there a timeframe rule like with Complete Monster?: Yes, please wait two weeks until after the work has concluded before proposing a character (again, usually using the North American air date). As is the case with CM, we want to give a reasonable time frame so that everyone interested in seeing the work has done so and can participate in the discussion without having anything spoiled.

  • What about groups like with Complete Monster?: This is a point of divergence between the two tropes. While CM does not allow for a single entry encompassing more than three characters lest their heinousness for crimes becomes too watered down, with MB as long as they are treated as one "unit" it is acceptable to lump all characters provided they share acts of charm and intelligence.

  • Can I propose my own work's character as a Magnificent Bastard?: No, this is a YMMV subject and the creator of a content is way too biased to be able to evaluate the criteria we're looking for without a second opinion taking over. That being said, you are more than welcome to encourage someone to consume your creation and if they feel a character counts, are more than welcome to suggest them.

Thread rules

When voting a troper must specify the effort post they're voting on and cannot merely vote on "Everything I missed" as in the past it has indicated the poster didn't read the effort post and is guessing instead of analyzing.

Resolved items

In general, a character listed on this trope is considered "settled". This means they should not be challenged unless information used to list them was incorrect or information was missed in the initial discussion.

However, when re-litigating a candidate, the same rules apply for when they were originally proposed. If they do not have five or more upvotes than downvotes for approval upon a re-litigation, including votes from the initial discussion if they do not change, then they are a cut.

This especially applies to the characters listed below, who have been discussed excessively and repeated attempts to get them listed/cut may result in punitive action for bogging down the thread.

Definitely an MB

Definitely not an MB

  • South Park: The show's frequent use of vulgar comedy and mean-spirited humor leaves any potential candidates devoid of the dignity or charm to qualify.

Well, we've counted Ra's al Ghul from Batman Begins and he intended to gas an entire city, alongside Bane from The Dark Knight Rises who blew up dozens of people in a stadium (all but one football player and everyone in the Mayor's box).

For sure, with stuff like that the character's redeeming qualities can go a long way. Ares from Wonder Woman was definitely a zero-one for this trope and CM, given the omnicidal goal. Likewise when someone like Ra's has genuine good intent or Bane and Talia truly have loved ones despite how bad they are, it inherently offsets some of the depravity of the character.

Plus I don't think 'has a high body count / attempted body count' is one of those things that needs redeeming features to balance out.

Case by case but that's not a good blanket statement to make. As I just pointed out, a hypothetical version of Ares that sought to wipe out mankind out of zealous hatred and was a Complete Monster, would not be this trope, whether or not that's a "big crime".

Raymond and Mr. Lee. No to Aiden.

[up] I think it should be hard for a CM to an MB. I proposed most of the Star Trek MB and CM characters and I never see any crossover between the 2.

Guys like Kivas Fajo or Rao Vantika are competent schemers, but they are such utter self-centered scum bags that I do not think they could ever count, guys like Q and Garak are far more likable.

Speaking of which, did we ever get write-ups on the Fighting Fantasy characters who could count, they were E Ped a year ago and I think the EP left out information about evil some of the villains were (Myurr and Gruul are far too cruel count), but it seems like Count Heydrich and the Dark Elf Wizard from Siege of Sardath could still count.

Some of them were proposed here:

I don't think just killing people, regardless of bodycount, is an issue when we upvoted the likes of Chayne Prime who ended nearly a million worlds.

Wasn't the Count a really nasty Serial Killer? Even with charisma and intelligence...

Honestly the fact his sister was proposed and seems more palatable than he furthers my concerns about him.

Hmm...it's less that he's a serial killer and more he's a vampire. He's far less wantonly sadistic and cruel than like 99 percent of all other Fighting Fantasy villains.

I will say based on the original EP, the Dark Elf Wizard from Siege of Sardath sounds promising, I had that book once, many years ago and I do not remember the Dark Elf wizard doing anything too bad, basic take over the world stuff.

'Yes' to Lee and Raymond, but gotta lean 'No' on Aiden...he sounds like he hits a lot of the marks, but ultimately isn't nearly as charismatic nor interesting as the other MBs from the franchise. If he was the only candidate that'd be one thing, but the presence of two other, better Keeps damages his potential.

Good luck, Mir!

Aight, second and likely final Transformers: Prime candidate...

Who is Soundwave? What makes him a candidate?

The sleek, intelligent, near-completely silent surveillance chief with a visor for a face, Soundwave is inarguably the most efficient Decepticon on the entire damn show, outshining even Megatron himself in sheer awesomeness.

Soundwave is consistently keeping the Decepticons informed and dangerous, throughout the entire series. Even in episodes where he appears for mere seconds, Soundwave is always tracking down new sources of Energon, sightings of the Autobots to better pinpoint their secret base, spying on his fellow Decepticons for signs of treachery, and is pretty much the quest-giver of the entire team, capable of opening Ground and Space Bridges with a quick calculation and coordinate estimation, enabling him to teleport himself and fellow 'Cons anywhere in the world with a thought.

In the premiere of the series, Soundwave intercepts federal agent Fowler's communications with the Autobots and alerts Starscream to his location, sending his trusty sidekick/symbiotic partner Laserbeak to take down Fowler's helicopter and capture him for Decepticon interrogation on the Autobot's current plans and base. Later, when Megatron needs a strong lock onto the coordinates of Cybertron, Soundwave breaks into a government base and hacks the mass array of satellite dishes to boost his own coordinate-scanning capabilities, allowing the 'Cons to lock onto Cybertron.

When the 3 children who help the Autobots—serious "leader" Jack, genki goth Miko, and nerdy tech wiz Raf—simultaneously sneak into and hack the base to prevent Soundwave from using the satellites, Soundwave casually uses one of his Combat Tentacles to scour the base, find the kids, and smack them around while he finishes hacking the satellites.

When Miko attacks him with a fire axe, Soundwave swipes it from her, raises it as if to kill the children....then just cleaves the wires connected to their computer in half, severing their ability to hack the satellites and enabling Soundwave to lock the coordinates in permanently. As he leaves, Soundwave glances back at the children just as Miko snaps a picture of her with her cell phone. Soundwave responds by snapping a picture of them, before transforming and flying off.

Later, when Megatron seemingly dies in an explosion in space, Soundwave ignores Starscream's treacherous rhetoric to leave the situation be, and instead scans for signs of life and finds Megatron. Starscream 'offers' to go check the source himself, but orders Soundwave to stay in place during a Decepticon-Autobot fight, noting "When Optimus Prime falls, I must bear witness!"

Once Starscream flies off, Soundwave dispatches Laserbeak to follow Starscream and make sure he recovers Megatron, playing his audio back to himself: "'Must bear witness.''"

Ensuring that Starscream brings back a critically-wounded Megatron, Soundwave heads off many attempts by Starscream to snuff out Megatron on his deathbed until Megatron awakens and recuperates.

When Megatron vanishes from all scanners while trying to revive Unicron, the treacherous Airachnid tries to sway the Decepticon armies under her thrall, and orders the Decepticon warship, Harbinger, to leave Megatron behind. Soundwave wordlessly refuses to follow such an order, and when Airachnid attacks, proceeds to hilariously dominate her in the ensuing fight (if you can even call it that), smacking her around and throttling her with ease before stomping on her head until she yields.

Soundwave then calmly heads right back to his station until Megatron does indeed return, having recorded the entire confrontation and playing it back for Megatron to inform him that Airachnid is not to be trusted.

Soundwave later effortlessly removes the Autobot Arcee from the Harbinger, standing in place as she rushes him after she has tore through the rest of the security, and when she's right on top of him, he opens a ground bridge and teleports her far away.

As Soundwave begins discovering locations of ancient Cybertronian relics that double as weapons, Megatron dispatches several of top warriors to find the weapons, Soundwave one of them. Soundwave confronts and beats down the Autobot Wheeljack and recovers the relic from him, which stands out as Soundwave was the only Decepticon to succeed in their relic hunting mission.

When various Decepticon alerts begin popping up all over the planet claiming they're under attack—leading Starscream to start impulsively scattering Decepticon reinforcements to the locations—Soundwave quickly deduces it's an Autobot ploy and even finds where the false alerts are originating from.

Soundwave eventually helps Shockwave recover a Predacon fossil, taking on Optimus Prime and two other Autobots together. When the fossil shatters and a single remaining piece falls off a bridge towards the Autobots, Soundwave simply opens a Grounds Bridge beneath the falling fossil and teleports it to the Decepticon base and flees victorious with Shockwave.

Soundwave later is ordered by Megatron to clean up a robo-zombie outbreak on the Harbinger caused by Starscream and Knockout, and Soundwave leads a battalion of Decepticon troops to stroll through and exterminate the robo-zombies. When a captive Airachnid escapes confinement and takes control of all the Insecticons onboard the Harbinger, Soundwave stands in her way as her and her small army move towards the bridge to confront Megatron.

While Airachnid swears vengeance on Soundwave and promises to make him scream, Soundwave just clenches his fist and stares her down as she rushes him with the Insecticons...only to pull his old trick, open a Space Bridge right when they're on top of them, teleport them to a distant moon in the far reaches of space, and trap them there, after which he continues going about his business as if nothing special had happened.

In one of his most badass moments, Soundwave personally arrives on the scene to ensure a Decepticon transport escapes an Autobot attack, but Soundwave is knocked unconscious in the process, though Laserbeak evades capture.

Taken hostage by the Autobots, they begin interrogating Soundwave....or, uh, trying to. First mockingly playing their demanding questions back in autotune and remixed, Soundwave responds to more questions by just flashing a smiling emoji on his face-screen. When the Autobots threaten him with physical violence, Soundwave blares a screeching audio that hurts the ears of them all. Then, when the Autobot technician and medic Ratchet proclaims his intent to just open up Soundwave's head and pry the information out of his mind, Soundwave begins erasing his own memories and mind, inducing himself into a coma-like shut-down, speaking his only words in the entire series before shutting down:

"Soundwave superior. Autobots inferior."

Eventually rescued when Laserbeak arrives and attaches to his chest to restore him awake, Soundwave instantly hops up, kicks the asses of the 3 Autobots in the base, and kidnaps Ratchet to bring to Megatron, who has communicated to Soundwave his desire to use Ratchet in a new scheme.

Returning to base and heading up the coordinates to target Cybertron so Megatron can use Cybermatter to restore it, then move onto Earth. When several Autobots break in and demolish their way to Soundwave, Soundwave just opens a Ground Bridge beneath them and teleports them away. However, when Jack and Miko infiltrate the bridge—Miko using the superpowered Apex Armor to confront him—Soundwave opens a Ground Bridge and tries to teleport her away like he often does...only for Raf to use the Autobot's own Ground Bridge device to open a Ground Bridge right next to Soundwave's, sandwiching him in between.

Now, when cross-streams of the Ground Bridge intersect, anything caught in-between is trapped in "the Shadowzone", which is basically best described as turning anything caught in-between into a ghost, as they can see and stroll around their surroundings, but can't interact with anything and no one in the "real world" can see them.

This proceeds to happen to Soundwave, leaving him utterly incapacitated and only able stare in surprise at his new predicament.

Apparently he eventually gets out in the sequel series Robots in Disguise but I haven't seen those episodes nor have any real intent to, and the connections to this series are...loose, so I think this discussion is just fine without that series.

Is Soundwave magnificent?

Beyond a shadow of a doubt. Soundwave is Evil Is Cool for this series. No one else except Shockwave touches him in that category. He's badass, he's untouchable for 90% of the series, he tanks his face getting cracked with zero reaction, he beats down pretty much everyone he gets into fights with, and just teleports away those he doesn't have the time nor ability to, and he's pretty much the reason the Decepticons are so successful throughout the series, constantly finding new ways to help their cause and track down potential weapons or Autobots to destroy them. Even his defeat literally takes a strategy discovered totally by accident early in the series by the heroes, because there's just no way to beat Soundwave in any normal methods.

Now, Soundwave doesn't really, uh, talk in the series, having only one line in the entire damn show that isn't just audio stolen from someone else played back at them to mock. I don't think this is a problem, tbh...Soundwave communicates hella well with body language and those audio clips he uses from others, his vow of silence endears him more as a badass, and when he finally does speak, it's such a classic, expertly-done Soundwave line that it works both as a brag of superiority and a spit of defiance towards those who would interrogate him and use him against his own team.

(Really, anyone who can troll and hurt an enemy faction while tied down to a table, then basically plunge himself into a coma to avoid interrogation...really nothing to call that but magnificent.)

And I really, really cannot overstate how damn helpful and hypercompetent Soundwave is even in episodes where he barely appears. He's always ready to teleport allies to safety and success, strides onscreen to supply new very valuable information that he discovered just through spying around satellites...he really just impresses every damn time he's even onscreen.

Is Soundwave a bastard?

Soundwave's easily the least evil of the "main" Decepticons. He never shows signs of taking enjoyment in what he's doing (him being silent most of the time helps lol but even then he's very restrained in his villainy), he often goes the route of least violence required—such as when he could have killed Jack, Miko and Raf with an axe, only to then just use the axe to inhibit their ability to stop him—and he overall just comes off as a genuine team player who helps his allies when they need it, has superb loyalty to Megatron and the cause, and while he's still fully willing to kill Autobots, humans, and even engage in the plan to wipe out all life on Earth, he's always Just Following Orders, but carrying out said orders with maximum efficiency.

Final Verdict?

Easy, easy Keeper

A [tup] to Shockwave and very hearty [tup][tup][tup] for Soundwave. One of the most competent Decepticons in the series and the most impressive incarnation of the character.

I've only seen the first season of Robots in Disguise, so I sadly can't comment if he counts there as well.

[tup] to Mr. Lee and Soundwave. Well it looks like Aiden Pearce didn't make the cut which comes off no surprise to me since many people have complained about Aiden, thus the reason why he's a Base-Breaking Character. I just thought to EP him since he's smart and enough of a bastard to count. I would EP Marcus Halloway since he is smart, charming, and people like him much more than Aiden, but I think Marcus might be is too heroic to be considered a bastard (unless someone thinks differently). Luckily T-Bone has both Marcus's charm and likability and Aiden's bastard credentials and I'm glad that he got approved since he is my favorite character, which reminds me here's his write-up

  • Watch_Dogs:
    • Raymond Kenney is a genius software engineer hired by Blume Corporation to create Central Operating System, or CTOS. When Raymond learns of the corporation's plan to use CTOS to spy on people and control their lives, he hacks CTOS to show everyone the dangers of relying it causing the Northeast blackout of 2003 and the deaths of eleven people. Going into hiding in Chicago and taking the alias Theodore "T-Bone" Grady, Raymond allies with Aiden Pearce helping him rescue his sister from Damien Brenks, dismantle Lucky Quinn's human trafficking ring, and shut down CTOS when Brenks hijacks it. Upon learning that JB Markowicz, aka Default, has sent fixers to kill Raymond in the "Bad Blood" DLC, Raymond tracks him down and turns Default's own trap against him killing Default. Resuming his crusade against Blume in the sequel, Raymond goes to San Fransisco and recruiting Marcus Halloway and his friends to his cause while tasking them to carry out dangerous missions to gain more followers, turning them into a genuine threat to Blume and allowing them to expose the corruption of their Chief Technology Officer, Dusan Nemec, leading to Nemec's arrest.
    • Jordi Chin is a witty yet professional fixer hired by Aiden Pearce to track down Maurice Vega, the man who killed Aiden's niece. Finding Maurice Vega at a baseball stadium and killing his men, Jordi stages the scenario like a gang-shooting before calling the police, distracting everyone while he and Aiden escape, taking Maurice with them. When Jordi learns that someone survived their attack and can identify them, he has Aiden infiltrate the prison the witness is being held in to silence him. Jordi eventually betrays Aiden after receiving a contract to kill him, though he does reveal Maurice's location after surviving their scuffle. Appearing in the DLC for the sequel, "Human Conditions", Jordi teams up with DedSec hacker Marcus Holloway in tracking down the Russian Mob, Bratva. Tracking down Bratva's leader at a yacht, Jordi goes in to kill the leader, while pinning his murder on Marcus before escaping.
