Cleanup thread: Magnificent Bastard

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

     Previous post
IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

  • Why do a cleanup?: This trope definitely exists and has a well documented history of use. That being said, it frequently gets misused to a character who meets one of the components, namely that they are smart, charming while not necessarily even being a villain, or create good plans. While these are components, there is also a certain personality required, not to mention that all of the above are required to be present for a character to be a true Magnificent Bastard. As the trope attracts interest, it unfortunately brings in a lot of misuse and I thought the best way to rectify this would be a Perpetual Cleanup Thread, as is being done and has seen success with Complete Monster.

  • What makes a Magnificent Bastard: Below is a list of the individual components to make this character. Note that they must all be present, not just some, which has lead to frequent misuse:
    • Must be intelligent: Goes without saying, to be a Magnificent Bastard, the character has to be smart in the first place and use their brain to work towards whatever their end goal may be;
    • Must be a Bastard: While going overboard in how vile the character is can be detrimental, a key aspect is the Bastard part of the trope, whether the character is an out-and-out antagonist in the work, some manner of Villain Protagonist, or something in between, they at least have some unscrupulous qualities to qualify for this trope;
    • Must not be too detestable: Again, there is a ceiling on how bad the character can be before they just become too nefarious, blocking out the Magnificent part of the trope. A genocidal racist or child-raping Sadist aren't going to make the cut;
    • Think on their feet: In addition to being a Chessmaster, a Magnificent Bastard, if the character deals with situations in which their initial plan is ruined, has to be able to pull a Xanatos Speed Chess and at least come up with a competent strategy to make up for lost time, otherwise they fail for being unable to think in tough spots;
    • Have charm: Even if they don't necessarily make every character they meet fall in love with them and can even be detested by others, the audience has to find an amicable social relation to the character, or they are failing to make the impact required for this trope.

  • What to do if a character is listed on a page but has not been approved?: They need to be removed, all candidates need to come through the cleanup thread first. The character could well count but they need to be analyzed properly and voted on first.

  • Do we list Playing With this trope?: No; as a YMMV trope, this cannot be Played With, so we only want examples that are Played Straight.

  • What do I do if I want a character to be listed as a Magnificent Bastard?: The greatest success Complete Monster saw for its cleanup effort was from the invention of the effort post format, so, borrowing from that, a troper wishing to propose a Magnificent Bastard will create such a post in the following format:
    • Begin by describing The work, this will help establish the setting the character is in and for the reader to understand what kind of a scenario they are in;
    • Summarize The character's actions, this will provide a listing for readers to understand what they do and how it applies to this trope because charm and lack of smugness are so crucial, this is a good time to be incorporating exactly the flavor of how they operate to explain this;
    • List circumstances in which the character must Think on their feet, these are times where a wrench might be thrown in their initial plan and they have to adapt on the spot or even come up with a new scheme all together, this is also a good time to explain how the villain reacts to defeat when they have to face it, a true Magnificent Bastard won't break down into tears at the thought of death, they should have known such a possibility could occur and be able to handle it with more dignity;
    • The competition, similar to the Heinous Standard dealt with for a Complete Monster, this section is to deal with how successful the character is in carrying out their plans compared to other characters. While, as a villain, they probably are going to lose in the end, it is good to explain how other characters handle the same situation. There is no exceptionalism case to be made for this trope but explaining the variety helps the reader have a better understanding of the proposal.

  • How do you know when the character's arc is done so they can be proposed? When their tenure as a villain or antagonist finishes. This could happen in a single Story Arc in an entire work, a single work of a franchise, or the whole series in general. We'll show lenience to Long-Runners with constantly recurring candidates or series with outstanding continuities (ex. comic books), and it's entirely possible to count in a work or two but not in general for a reason like Depending on the Writer.

  • What about candidates evil because of external sources? Those Made of Evil can qualify if they show enough individuality and tactical acumen — in other words, they have the personality to fulfill the magnificence requirement. Conversely, those brainwashed, especially if they're a better person without it, may fail the individuality aspect and cannot count.

  • What if they are under orders from a higher-up? Depends. If the boss created the plans down to the letter and the candidate is just following them, sounds like we should discuss the boss instead. However, if the candidate takes creative liberties with the orders, adds their own charm and flair to them, fills in holes in the orders, and/or actively deals with obstacles their boss did not talk about, the candidate shows enough individual thinking to qualify.

  • What about Character Development? An MB is something a character can develop into... a nice person who plots well might become more morally gray as the work goes on and hits the "Bastard" criteria, thus making them viable. Likewise, a Smug Snake might shed their ego, become more understanding of the threat others pose and gain the personality or "Magnificent" criteria, likewise making them viable. Conversely, a character who looks like this trope might suffer from a Sanity Slippage or just get outed as not being as smart as they thought they were and become incompatible with MB.

  • Can an MB be a good guy? Not in the conventional sense... it is required they have at least some dubious traits lest they fail the "Bastard" criteria. That being said, a character who pulls a Heel–Face Turn or eventually stops taking villainous actions is still fair game: as there was a point in time where they were both "Magnificent" and a "Bastard" at the same time and they've merely adapted as time goes on. Now... if such a character begins showing other issues (i.e.: becomes prone to freak outs or starts getting outwitted) then they're compromising their Magnificence and will probably be deemed a cut. What's important is stylishly operating while at least for some time being willing to take at best underhanded methods to see a job done. A Heel–Face Turn in itself isn't a disqualifier but they do have to have been "Magnificent" and a "Bastard" at the same time and afterwards can't start slipping on the former front.

  • What about characters whose stories can take different routes?: When proposing a character in a form of media that has them in multiple story routes. Said character must be consistent with their characteristics in all routes. (ex.: Can't have an example who shows promise on one route yet fails in another.) The only exception is if a later installment of the series confirms the character's actions which made them worth proposing are the canon route.

  • Is there a timeframe rule like with Complete Monster?: Yes, please wait two weeks until after the work has concluded before proposing a character (again, usually using the North American air date). As is the case with CM, we want to give a reasonable time frame so that everyone interested in seeing the work has done so and can participate in the discussion without having anything spoiled.

  • What about groups like with Complete Monster?: This is a point of divergence between the two tropes. While CM does not allow for a single entry encompassing more than three characters lest their heinousness for crimes becomes too watered down, with MB as long as they are treated as one "unit" it is acceptable to lump all characters provided they share acts of charm and intelligence.

  • Can I propose my own work's character as a Magnificent Bastard?: No, this is a YMMV subject and the creator of a content is way too biased to be able to evaluate the criteria we're looking for without a second opinion taking over. That being said, you are more than welcome to encourage someone to consume your creation and if they feel a character counts, are more than welcome to suggest them.

Thread rules

When voting a troper must specify the effort post they're voting on and cannot merely vote on "Everything I missed" as in the past it has indicated the poster didn't read the effort post and is guessing instead of analyzing.

Resolved items

In general, a character listed on this trope is considered "settled". This means they should not be challenged unless information used to list them was incorrect or information was missed in the initial discussion.

However, when re-litigating a candidate, the same rules apply for when they were originally proposed. If they do not have five or more upvotes than downvotes for approval upon a re-litigation, including votes from the initial discussion if they do not change, then they are a cut.

This especially applies to the characters listed below, who have been discussed excessively and repeated attempts to get them listed/cut may result in punitive action for bogging down the thread.

Definitely an MB

Definitely not an MB

  • South Park: The show's frequent use of vulgar comedy and mean-spirited humor leaves any potential candidates devoid of the dignity or charm to qualify.

Yeah, let's be real here. Evil Morty probably still wouldn't count as a CM even when discounting the heinous standard. He's a sociopath with an astronomical kill streak, no shit about that, but his desire to escape the endless cycle of Rick superiority is portrayed akin to escaping a lifetime of abuse. It's a generally selfish motivation, but it's definitely not one without sympathy since… Rick, y'know? I've seen plenty of the show's viewership agree.

Congrats future.

Yes to Evil Morty.

And here we go.

What is the work?

Warehouse 13 is a science fiction show that fallows Pete Lattimer and Myka Bering, two secret service agents who find themselves working for the titular warehouse collecting powerful artifacts. Along the way they make many allies and enemies. One of which is our candidate. This character is in every season so a lot of this will be truncated.

Who is HG Wells?

Helena G. Wells, better known as HG Wells, is the world-renowned scientific mind and a former Warehouse Agent of Warehouse 12. After her daughter Christina was murdered created her time machine to travel into the mind of a nanny to save her daughter, but failing, she tracked down the men responsible before torturing them to death. Later, Helena decided to be voluntarily being bronzed and housed in the Warehouse in the hopes that the future would be better. She is later awoken by James MacPherson and the two conspire to steal her belongings from the Escher Vault. Going to her old home, which is now a museum, she runs into Pete and Myka who temporally capture her. However Wells is able to trick them into activating a trap, before escaping with the Imperceptor Vest while MacPherson successfully steals the Anti-Matter to power it. Successfully sneaking into the vault and stealing her items, Wells eventually kills MacPherson when attempts to reveal what he knows as leverage.

Deciding that the modern world was worse than the one she left behind, Wells decides to get ahold of the Minoan Trident, in order to activate the super volcano under Yellowstone and create a second ice-age. To this end she enders herself to Myka, forming a legit friendship, by saving her and Claudia's life. Later helping Pete and Myka save Artie and getting herself hired at Warehouse 13 on Myka's recommendation. Wells then uses founds from the Warehouse to be found some teens in finding the lost Warehouse 2, despite knowing of a curse that could kill them. Then she journeys through Warehouse 2, stealing the part trident while Pete and Myka are distracted, before knocking them out and leaving them there. Wells then heads to Paris to get the last piece from her daughters coffin, while threatening the life of a lawyer to distract the heroes. Sending Lizzie Borden's Compact to Pete's girlfriend, Kelly, to distract him, Wells heads to Yellowstone where she is confronted by Myka and Artie. Myka is eventually able to talk her down, with Wells breaking down before excepting her arrest.

Wells makes a few appearances in season 3, such as helping Pete and Myka solve a case that is related to one for her past. In the season 3 final two episodes, where her mind and body are discovered to have been separated. When her body is kidnapped by Walter Sykes, Wells decided that the Janus Coin must be destroyed before they could be reunited, but of course this plan doesn't work and Sykes forces them back together to solve the Ancient Regent Sanctum's chess puzzle, by figuring out to change the rules in order to prevent Myka from dying. Wells takes the blast of Sykes' bomb, though is saved by Artie. In season 4, not much to mention as she is more a straight up hero, and the last we see of her on-screen, she is married to dating a woman named Giselle, parting ways with Myka promising to meet up for coffee.

Is she smart? Charming?

She is a super genius able to event rocket ships, come up with multiple plans, change them with ease, and is a mast at hand-to-hand combat. In her first appearance alone she is able to trick the heroes into a multiple step trap. Open the safe, find the vest, and have them activate the trap. Which goes off with out a hitch. She is able to interrogate herself into heroes' group under their nose and most of them do figure out her game until she wants them to. As for charm. She is very sauve, being well spoken, and able to manipulate people. This best seen with Myka, who she is equal part charming, flirtatious, and manipulative.

Bitch? Too Much?

In her first season alone she kills her ally, set teenagers up to die, and actively tries to destroy mankind. However, she has several redeeming qualities. First off, she legit loved her daughter, and this fact is made clear. Even her switch to the darks side is largely because of this. Second her legit care for Myka, who she actively refers to as the one person who knows her and is willing to do anything to protect her. She also mellows out as the show goes on, getting over her minor villainous breakdown at the end of season two, and becoming a lot more heroic.

Conclusion?

I leave that up to you guys.

I'll do Mac Pherson himself later. (It just thanks to flashbacks he appears in the whole show)

But in the meantime ill get up a few others. This shows main villains are a goldmine for this.

Got another candidate. Admittedly, may be questionable, but I figure it's worth a shot.

What is the Work?

Shark Wars is a six-part literature series set in the Big Blue, in which it recounts the various conflicts waged between shivers of sharks. The story follows a supposed reef shark named Gray, who gets exiled from his home for interacting with enemy shiver sharks and potentially giving away their location to be attacked, so Gray is forced to join a different shiver and later merge with another called Goblin Shiver, getting caught in the web of Big Blue wars. As Gray fights threats to his shiver, he gradually unveils more about his past, including the fact that he's actually a megalodon pup, and begins learning a powerful form of fighting called sharkkata that allows him to wield supernatural powers, all thanks to his mentor...

Who is Takiza Jaelynn Betta vam Delacrest Waveland ka Boom Boom and What Has He Done?

Takiza Jaelynn Betta vam Delacrest Waveland ka Boom Boom is a legendary betta fish renowned for his mastery of sharkkata. An apprentice to a frilled shark named Hokuu, Takiza was disgusted to learn that his master had usurped the peaceful leadership the powerful Fifth Shiver, intent on guiding them to wipe out all other sharkkind, so Takiza sealed Hokuu's conspirators away as punishment. In the process, Takiza would seal away Gray's father to be killed by Hokuu's forces, whom had just enough time to get his son out. Afterwards, Takiza began traveling around the Big Blue, looking for a worthy mentee to learn sharkkata. While well-intentioned, Takiza was a ruthless trainer and was even forced to wound one of his former apprentices when he had the potential to become evil, which is implied to have contributed to his later death when they cut ties with each other.

In the present, Takiza finds Gray and a Goblin shiver shark named Thrash, in which the latter begins harassing a turtle family. Takiza intervenes and easily trounces Thrash. Gray confronts him, but Takiza matter-of-factly states that the Goblin Shiver are a Toxic Friend Influence and tells him that he is destined for greater things than his "friends". Shaken by this, Gray eventually chooses to remain loyal to his original shiver over Goblin shiver, but just when it seems like they're about to be overwhelmed by the latter, Takiza appears and singlehandedly beats them all back.

Later meeting with one of his former apprentices, Lochlan II, Takiza discovers that a new threat, Finnivus Victor and his Indi shiver, have been launching attacks against other shivers. To stop him, Takiza meets with Gray once more to train as his next apprentice. When Gray accepts, it proves to be much harder than he imagined, as he's forced to train in deep waters where the pressure begins to ache him and Takiza puts him through difficult training exercises, throwing insults and physically disciplining him whenever he complains.

When Gray returns, Takiza assigns him the dangerous test of traveling to the deepest part of the Big Blue, the Maw, to retrieve a maredsoo, a kelp that can boost any shark's speed. Although Gray nearly perishes from the extreme conditions there, he succeeds in his task and gives it to Takiza, who gives a little for Gray to travel to Lochlan's shiver, who are engaging with Finnivus' army. Takiza takes the remaining maredsoo and swims away, but he later returns with an army of his own, revealing that he knew that Lochlan's shiver along couldn't stand against Finnivus', so he used the maredsoo to quickly move a reinforcement army. When Finnivus returns for a second invasion, Takiza provides even more harsh training to improve Gray's sharkkata, ultimately allowing him to defeat Finnivus. With the threat dealt with, Takiza guides Gray to the shark kingdom, Fathomir, led by Seazarein Kaleth, hoping that they would unite and fight for peace.

Unfortunately, the heroes discover that Hokuu has returned to free the aforementioned Fifth Shiver and just wiped out Gray's home shiver at Riptide. Gray and his friend Barkley want to evacuate the survivors to safe territory and although Kaleth forbids them from doing so, Takiza helps them rescue their friends, stunning Kaleth's guardians along the way. On his trip, Gray encounters Hokuu and learns about Takiza's complicity in his father's death, to which Takiza admits that Hokuu is right and states that he'd do it over again, if necessary. Although this strains their relationship, Takiza helps Gray fight Hokuu, using his cunning to get the advantage over his former master. Unfortunately, the attack allows Hokuu to teleport and assassinate an unguarded Kaleth, so Takiza crowns Gray to succeed her as Seazarein.

Hokuu soon releases the Fifth Shiver and incites war against Gray's forces, in which Takiza continues to provide counsel to both Gray and even his other friends. After a series of battles, Gray's shiver are trapped in a cave by the Fifth Shiver and Gray tries using his sharkkata powers to destroy the boulder keeping them in. At first, it seems like Gray isn't strong enough to do so and is draining himself with each attempt, so Takiza gives up his own life energy to empower Gray and free his shiver, sacrificing himself in the process. The newly freed army defeats the Fifth Shiver, but Gray later leaves to mourn over Takiza's death. However, a vengeful Hokuu ambushes Gray to kill him, but Takiza intervenes and reveals that he was still alive, only in a deep healing meditation to recover his lost energy. Even then, it appears that Hokuu manages to kill Takiza with an energy bolt, but just as Hokuu turns around, Takiza reveals that he was faking and kills a surprised Hokuu. However, the battle has truly worn down a dying Takiza, but he gracefully accepts his death, spending his last moments encouraging Gray to lead the Big Blue as a fair leader before he finally passes.

Is He Charming? Intelligent? Able to Think on His Feet?

Absolutely. He's a witty, highly skilled fighter who is practically never outwitted and can quickly adapt to any battle.

'Is He a Bastard? Too Much of One?

It's tricky here. He's pretty firmly on the heroes' side, but I'd say he commits rather questionable things to make him morally ambiguous. For one, he is an absolutely strict trainer who puts his apprentices through Training from Hell and acts as a Sink or Swim Mentor who puts his apprentices on potentially fatal tests, the latter of which is explicity shown to have a real possibility of getting Gray killed, something that Takiza himself knows. He is also willing to severely injure them if they prove to be too unstable. Furthermore, he was complicit in murdering Gray's father and endangering a pup Gray. While we was unaware of his presence there at the time, he remains completely unapologetic about it, showing that he's not above putting others, including children, at risk, if it means saving the Big Blue.

The Competition

Takiza blows everyone out of the water in this department, with no one able to match his cool, sly nature.

Final Verdict?

What do you guys think?

  • Rick and Morty: Evil Morty is a version of Morty Smith who has grown tired of his being Rick's sidekick and plans to break free from his role by escaping the Central Finite Curve to enter a multiverse where Rick Sanchez isn't the smartest man. Evil Morty would mind-control a Rick where the two would proceed to kill Ricks and kidnaps Morties, torturing the Morties to make a force-field to prevent the The Citadel from finding them while framing Rick-C137 and his Morty for the crimes, luring them to their hideout where they scan Rick's mind. Making his brain-washed Rick his scapegoat, Evil Morty would blend in with the kidnapped Morties to go to the Citadel, where he would run for president, using his charisma to get the majority to vote for him, while killing anyone who may pose a threat to him. Using his position to modify the Citadel into a giant portal gun, Evil Morty invites Rick-C137 for dinner to complete scanning Rick's mind before having the Ricks and Morties killed to use their blood to activate the Citadel's portal gun for him to escape The Central Finite Curve. By matching Rick's intellect, Evil Morty not only manages to succeed in escaping the Central Finite Curve and even destroy it, but be the first person to have ever outsmarted Rick.
