Yellow, which by default makes my starter Pikachu, but this was before I came to hate it.
Not counting that, my first game was Sapphire, and my starter was Mudkip, because it was the only one I thought looked cute. Funnily enough, in my first playthrough of that game, Swampert got kinda sidelined and my main Pokémon ended up being a Pelipper of all things!
You have no idea! Sadly, they're not legal to own where I live.

What was your first Pokemon game? (Bonus points if you can remember which starter you picked.)
A lot of the stuff I really enjoyed from the era started late and bled over into the 2000s since I was born in the back half (so I grew up with SpongeBob, PPG, Dexter’s Lab and Hey Arnold).
If I had to pick something that was distinctly based more in the period, though, I’d probably say Pinky and the Brain (pre-Elmyra) and Darkwing Duck. They were in reruns when I actually got to see them, but it didn’t matter because they were both (and still are!) excellent.
(I also still have a soft spot for the classic Franklin show, because of course I do.)
