All-Purpose Policy and Meta discussion: Administrivia.Trope Repair Shop

Go To

This thread is a metathread for Trope Repair Shop discussion. Things like TRS policy, what is needed in a TRS opening post, questions about whether a certain topic is TRS-worthy and questions about why a thread wasn't opened go here.

Some guidelines for when/whether to use TRS:

  • If the trope is fine, but has some bad examples, feel free to clean them up or to start a cleanup project at Projects: Short-Term. Trope Repair Shop is for when cleaning isn't sufficient.
  • If you think there's something wrong with the trope that systematically attracts improper examples, start a discussion at Trope Talk. Use a Wick Check to see whether there's an issue present (and if there is, what the issue is), and post the results on TRS Queue and wait your turn if a problem is present. The following methods are two possible ways to do a wick check (though not necessarily the only ways):
    • You can go ahead with the Wick Check without a discussion if you know what you're looking for. While it's not mandatory, feel free to ask someone for help confirming that you got the issue and the numbers correct.
    • Consult the Wick Check Project thread to collect evidence if you need help.
  • If a wick check is too much for you, you can leave the issue at Tropes Needing TRS citing the discussion.
  • Depending on a trope (or non-trope) in question, a wick check may be determined to not be required, such as for tropes that are not thriving (per the standards for trope health listed on the Wick page). However, there is no problem if you want to do one anyway.

For a more detailed introduction to this forum, click here.

For related projects, see Wick Cleaning Projects and the Wick Check Project.

See Tropes Needing TRS for a list of trope candidates for TRS.

A (not mandatory, informal) queue for prospective TRS participants can be found at the TRS Queue.

The Appearance Tropes cleanup has moved on to Zettai Ryouiki, so its TRS thread can be declined. However, I will cite the wick check within there.

Would it be a good idea to move the Trope Idea Salvage Yard to Administrivia like Tropes Needing TRS, since it's become a viable alternative to sending cut tropes to TLP either in situations where nobody volunteers to sponsor the drafts, or in cases where the page was made without a draft (pre-2017) to send the trope back to?

I remember the latter situation happening fairly recently (I think earlier this year), which happened after a vote to send a trope back to TLP was overturned in favor of sending it to the Salvage Yard because the mods couldn't unlaunch it without a draft.

Would a bulk TRS be allowed for The Con subtropes, or would they need to be tackled individually? (I would wait for the backlog to clear.)

While The Con itself is not known to be problematic, many of its subtropes are underperforming and/or have an unclear title, and as we've seen with Fake Mark and Rainmaking, some of them could be redundant. There are also two redundant sub-indices, Short Con and The Tale.

Does this look like an okay OP for a TRS thread?

This concerns the pages African-American Media, Asian-American Media, Latino-American Media, Native American and First Nations Media, and potentially also Pacific Islanders in Media.

As discussed here, these indices have a problem of ambiguous naming. They are intended to index works about X-Americans, but "[X]-American Media" could also refer to works by X-American creators, or works intended for an X-American audience.

The following were discussed as rename options:

  • "[X]-Americans in Media" and "Native Americans and First Nations People in Media"
  • "Works About [X]-Americans" and "Works About Native Americans and First Nations People"
  • "Media About [X]-Americans" and "Media About Native Americans and First Nations People"

The now-closed thread for The Last Of These Is Not Like The Others apparently didn't do anything to the description, because there are still some dubious "sub-trope" listings that assume the trope means any given part of a group isn't like the rest even if it isn't the final or penultimate part, such as Black Sheep Hit (which doesn't require the hit to be the last from a musician).

[up][up] Draw and analyze a random subset of one of the indices. Essentially equivalent to a wick check.

I'm not sure why the thread for Where da White Women At? stalled out. People keep asking what we were supposed to be doing, even though we've made that clear multiple times.

[up] It stalled out because there were a couple of issues going on with it, such as that the description was at one point unilaterally rewritten, which made it ambiguous as to how much of a problem there actually was in terms of misuse.

Plus, when threads don't get posted on for a while people just forget where the discussion left off. It happens.

[up] And are any of those issues still unresolved? I recall someone announcing that they undid a unilateral description rewrite.

I'm still awaiting a comment on the Tropes Needing TRS entry for Destroy the Evidence. My concern is that the actual definition may not be narrow as the description implies, especially with its Example as a Thesis problems and the fourth bullet in the description. I presume that most reasonable examples would involve authorities nonetheless.

  • Destroy the Evidence: Did you think this trope was actually about destroying the evidence? Nope! This is (meant to be) specifically and only about evidence that is (1) about someone else, and (2) could be given to the authorities specifically. Needless to say the page has examples (and an image) relating to destroying evidence in general.

So, do we have a trope about destroying evidence that's for those other cases? Otherwise expand.

Or does it have those specifics because you wouldn't destroy evidence otherwise?

Oh, and it's an Ending Trope? Oof, that title needs to get way more specific if so.

Do I need TRS to rename Witches and Wizards into Magic User Tropes or something?

Else, how do I go about it?

[up] "Magic User" is an awkward term that's rarely been used anywhere in the past twenty years (largely because nobody calls a warrior a "sword user", either). I don't see anything wrong with Wizards and Witches as a title.

You get my [tup] to the proposal earlier this page, on a single thread on multiple The Con subtropes. They all have the same issue, basically.

[up][up] - It was split into A Wizarding Index and A Witchy Index then reverted because the split didn't separate everything.

For example, Witch Doctor was lost because it's neither witchy or wizardly, but it's on the big index.

Edit: And yes, I've talked to reverter AHI-3000 about this. They want Magicians Index too.

I want to publish a TRS thread for Up To Eleven. The trope have been suffering from a major case of Trope Decay due to the trope being used as synonym for Exaggerated trope and other things unrelated to it.

What are some guidelines so that the TRS thread won't be locked?

Well, you got the wick check covered, so go ahead and start. I also suggest proposing a possible means of fixing the issue.

Also, be sure to present the wick check. Linking to it is fine.

~Stellavore, you'll need more wicks (a random selection of at least 50) for The Sociopath thread to be opened. See How to Do a Wick Check. We need a large enough sample-size to really see if there's a pattern or if the issues are cherrypicks. Feel free to stop by this thread for help.

Hence why I linked the thread, where we do wick checks, as a collective, with The Power of Friendship (or just our collective boredom and need for things to do). You could start a community wick check there and multiple tropers can take part.
