All-Purpose Policy and Meta discussion: Administrivia.Trope Repair Shop

Go To

This thread is a metathread for Trope Repair Shop discussion. Things like TRS policy, what is needed in a TRS opening post, questions about whether a certain topic is TRS-worthy and questions about why a thread wasn't opened go here.

Some guidelines for when/whether to use TRS:

  • If the trope is fine, but has some bad examples, feel free to clean them up or to start a cleanup project at Projects: Short-Term. Trope Repair Shop is for when cleaning isn't sufficient.
  • If you think there's something wrong with the trope that systematically attracts improper examples, start a discussion at Trope Talk. Use a Wick Check to see whether there's an issue present (and if there is, what the issue is), and post the results on TRS Queue and wait your turn if a problem is present. The following methods are two possible ways to do a wick check (though not necessarily the only ways):
    • You can go ahead with the Wick Check without a discussion if you know what you're looking for. While it's not mandatory, feel free to ask someone for help confirming that you got the issue and the numbers correct.
    • Consult the Wick Check Project thread to collect evidence if you need help.
  • If a wick check is too much for you, you can leave the issue at Tropes Needing TRS citing the discussion.
  • Depending on a trope (or non-trope) in question, a wick check may be determined to not be required, such as for tropes that are not thriving (per the standards for trope health listed on the Wick page). However, there is no problem if you want to do one anyway.

For a more detailed introduction to this forum, click here.

For related projects, see Wick Cleaning Projects and the Wick Check Project.

See Tropes Needing TRS for a list of trope candidates for TRS.

A (not mandatory, informal) queue for prospective TRS participants can be found at the TRS Queue.

I support cutting it.

ETA: I found the exact revision that proves the person who made the Hex Sign page copied it from Wikipedia.

Posting to note that Hello 83433 has requested to be pinged alongside me when the Cloning Blues thread launches, since they helped me reorganize things in the wick check.

I'm okay cutting Hex Sign if other mods are okay, as it's a bit of a weird loophole to skip a thread.

That should be a nobrainer with no TRS needed.

I brought it up in the mod chat just in case but I am personally fine with just snipping.

[up]I already did that.

Anyway, I moved WTH, Casting Agency?'s sandbox to Questionable Casting (its new name) because that thread had kind of stalled, and the newest Trope Report listing the move as incomplete reminded me that I forgot to go back to that one, so maybe that thread can get moving soon, especially because there are no on-page examples to worry about during example cleanup.

[up]It's definition-only, so wick count is irrelevant because it can't have examples. The Not Thriving label can only apply to pages that aren't definition-only.

I think it does, because it's describing a type of Weasel Words in advertisements. Its wick count is just lower than the new threshold because it already disallowed examples before the threshold was lowered. However, if there's an argument that it doesn't serve a purpose, that would be a reason to take any definition-only page to TRS since wick counts are irrelevant for them.

I added Heroes Want Redheads to the queue but I don't know what else to do with it besides "maybe we can make a trope from the ashes of this one". Other ideas?

[up]I think it's related to Significant Green-Eyed Redhead (a trope that has come up a lot in "is this tropeworthy" discussions) in that I think it's trying to capture the phenomenon that creators will sometimes use unique or rare phenotype combinations as a way to highlight "this character is ~*~*different~*~*/special/noteworthy in this story" (This also applies to Significant White Hair, Dark Skin). So maybe one option could be to just redirect to SGER.

[up][up]As I said in the Trope Talk thread, I think it's something akin to a trope in aggregate.

I would oppose redirecting it to Significant Green-Eyed Redhead, for the record, as that extends well beyond just love interests and I do think Heroes Want Redheads is correct insofar as its description positing reasons why red hair is specifically disproportionately common for love interests.

[up]But this trope only makes sense if you ignore the many MANY other examples of heroes going for blondes, brunettes, etc.

Tropes in Aggregate walk a very fine line between being tropeworthy and not tropeworhty, given that they're a class of tropes in which we're openly acknowledging that the logic behind them is kind of obscure/varied. My personal criteria if the intention behind a TIA isn't more concrete than speculation is to evaluate each part by comparison. In this case, there's two: 1) do heroes more than other characters across all works show a propensity for redheads and 2) do heroes show a bias towards redheads more than other hair colors? If the answer to either is yes, then there's grounds for it to stand.

But I feel like you'd be hard pressed to answer either question in the affirmative with any degree of confidence given Everyone Loves Blondes and Raven Hair, Ivory Skin also being a very prominent beauty standard dating back to even the Victorian era. I genuinely think red hair being a sign of specialness / uniqueness is about as far as we can reasonably take this idea as a TIA. People notice redheaded love interests simply because redheads in general are not that common in fiction and IRL, which is evidence towards the idea that "redheaded characters are typically important to the story in some way", but not much else

As I said in the TT thread, if we were to salvage HWR then we'd have to hammer out the reason for it, which may very well be covered by other tropes (Fiery Redhead, Has a Type, etc.) There may or may not be a potential trope for dating a person because of their "exotic" looks (such as a world where redheads are super rare) but IDK and again might already be covered by another trope.

I'll wait for the thread to discuss it more deeply.

I am wondering if TRS may be needed to change Australian Culture to Australian Media in line with the other country indexes after all (in which case I might put it in the waitlist). Last I saw, the TLP draft had been stalled for a long time and there apparently hasn't been an answer for an old discussion within this thread.

Fewest wicks remaining: The Heroine (531), Authority Grants Asskicking (351), What The Hell Casting Agency (211), Acceptable Target (105), Electra Complex (38)

Closable upon completion: Surprise Creepy (635), Camera Screw (631), Surprisingly Good English (629), Power Walk (579), Overprotective Dad (533)

Thoughts: A bunch of projects were cleared out since I last updated, which is fabulous. Can't Refuse the Call Anymore (two trope descriptions to write here and here; 130 wicks) and Howling To The Night (trope description to finalize here; 73 wicks) are my recommendations for anyone looking to get another couple threads finished up.

[up]Not to toot my own horn, but I feel like I accomplished something since I was able to knock out enough wicks for Surprisingly Good English for it to appear on that list. It started out with a four-digit wick count, then I knocked out some when clearing out Surprisingly Good Foreign Language's Related page (which I finished and cut since the main page was moved to SugarWiki.Surprisingly Good Foreign Language) and that turned out to be enough to get it down to the high three-digit range, and then I started going through its own Related page after that.

As indicated in this ATT, the Hypocrite trope might need a potential TRS thread.
