One thing I've noticed is that for all how the page for They Might Be Giants claims them to be the unofficial official band of this wiki, there's relatively few people on this site who seem to ever reference them.

[up][up] In all fairness, from what I've seen the movie features a lot more of animated characters from studios other than Disney, different from the Disney segment in Ralph Breaks the Internet for example.

[up] Yes, and Disney can afford the rights to show all of them in their movie, just because they can. 'Tis my point. Not as insidious as RBTI but it's nevertheless a bragging point.

Certain people seem to enjoy taking works that clearly mean one thing and making their pages and (especially) subpages out as if they are something else entirely.

Like, you'd think The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack was some kind of psychological horror show instead of a (really weird) comedy.

[up][up] My favorite example of that phenomenon is how the page for Chick Tracts claims the comics are set in a Warhammer-esque Dark Fantasy world.

Or how people seem to view the Kirby series as some kind of Lovecraftian Horror, even though the eldritch aspects of its lore is treated as something extra rather than the main focus (at least until the final level)

Double Post:

[up]x7 and x8: Stuff like that is why I feel very mixed on the whole "crossovers between separate companies" thing. On one hand, I get excited when a new non-Nintendo character becomes playable in Super Smash Bros., and I enjoyed watching Who Framed Roger Rabbit all the way to the end.

On the other hand, watching the trailers for the Rescue Rangers movie felt a bit... uncanny for me. Seeing characters from My Little Pony, Ugly Sonic etc. felt "off" to me for some reason, even though it basically did the same things as Smash Bros and Roger Rabbit. I'm honestly not sure why, but the way Cn DRR handle this crossover felt very cynical compared to the former two.

I don't know if this is the right thread for this, I just wanted to put this out.

I think this was brought up elsewhere but I dislike them too because oh god the big corporations really do own everything. I dislike them slightly less if they have a purpose (Lego Batman Movie) than just hang around for cameo points (Space Jam 2).

I know image uploader adds it by default, but why so many people leave %%[[caption-width-right:350:some caption text]] behind instead of removing it?

I leave it in case someone comes up with a funny caption later... and because I kept seeing other people do it, so I just assumed it was a rule of some kind (unspoken or otherwise).

As far as I know, comments are reserved for ZCE and mod notices, and any form of "fill in later" placeholders are strictly discouraged. If anyone comes up with something, they wouldn't hesitate to type the caption markup as well.

Speaking of "Page makes show X look like anything but what it really is", my favourites are how Ready Jet Go! is often made look like some kind of Spiritual Adaptation of Doctor Who for preschoolers or how the The Emoji Movie page seems to worship the Just Dance character as the only good thing from the movie.

The best character is always the one-shot disguise.

Maybe they are (though IMO the latter's not really correct as someone who knows). In the end, TV Tropes' pages are Depending on the Writer, since everyone focuses on a different aspect or several.

It's just really funny when you can tell one specific niche is projecting onto every single subpage. Though it gets less funny when that niche crosses a boundary like speculating on real-life people.

Every once in a while, I read a page that uses bracketed AC markup with intent to change the font to Large Caps With Small Caps for effect. This is still the most popular way to render Death's mannerisms from Discworld, for instance.

But then I notice that in the wiki's current state, it forces line breaks before and after the text, as it definitely did just now in my post. And this completely throws off the flow of the page. And it's been doing this for several years.

I have to wonder if it will ever be fixed. Because the wiki seems to be stuck in the limbo between hoping it gets better and actually making an effort to replace all of it.

[up][up][up][up]The Ready Jet Go! bit is particularly amusing because it's not even the work of a specific niche, it's the work of a single specific troper who openly distorted a show most other people had never heard of because he wanted more people to like it. This isn't speculation or anything - the troper in question openly admitted as much and apologized.

Which is another example, too, of just how often pages on here are basically time capsules because nobody ever updated them from the period where the person focusing on that page was active there.

[up] She’s a she, actually, but right otherwise.

Some of this wiki’s gushes could get weird, like how Sonic CD was once called one of the best games of all time, and the kilowicking of that one French cartoon.

Or the weird creepy gushing about Doug Walker's body and perverting sex jokes to mean something more about the creator.

I know I bring that up a lot but it baffles me as someone who once had a special interest in Nostalgia Critic. Like that is absolutely not a universal perspective and really weird to put all over the place.

YMMV.MauLer kind of disturbs me with how his rant on the sequel trilogy is listed under Catharsis Factor. Epsecially since he apparently is not done with the series, despite all of the videos being several hours long.

From what I've heard, that markup was supposed to be used for headers only. The line break function was made later to discourage the markup being used for special dialogue formatting like the aforementioned Death. In other words, it's intentional and it's unlikely to be fixed anytime soon.

The litmus test was fun, actually. I did it with my characters for years, for reason other than that I was bored, not legitimately concerned about their sue-ness. It was fun to get validation once though when I plugged a character from a show that everyone called a Mary Sue into it, and saw that she did in fact rank as a Mary Sue. Fun times.

It definitely explains the entirety of Common Mary Sue Traits, which might've been one of the first pages I've stumbled across on this wiki.

I've always find it fun too. I plug my character in from time to time just for kicks. An unidentified side effect for early Tvtropes though was that it brought attention to those Common Mary Sue Traits in a negative light, even though those traits and plot elements aren't inherently bad, which influenced how people wrote examples or whole pages. Especially if they were talking about a character they considered a Mary Sue.

I still think the Litmus test is pretty useful, although I'd like an updated one

Speaking of which, I noticed last year that the original creator has disowned the Mary Sue Litmus Test in part because of what I mentioned above. They have a new test, "Does My Character Work Okay?" that you might be interested in.

First time I've heard of Anti-Shurtugal

Anti-Shur'tugal. For those unaware, back in the mid to late 00's it was really popular, and I mean really, among sci-fi and fantasy nerds to bash a successful but incredibly cliche series of teen books called the Inheritance Cycle or the Eragon series, named for the first book. Anti-Shurtugal was spun off from the official Eragon fansite Shurtugal specifically for critics of the series. What value it had as a literary critique site was quickly overwhelmed by the general negative tone and bashing it always partook in. For a lot of aspiring writers, which includes a lot of tropers, that was considered the ideal way to write. Especially for a website, which they then took to here.

I feel like the role once played by the Evil Overlord List and Mary Sue Litmus Test have now been filled by Terrible Writing Advice and people like him. In fact, TWA seems to have a similar role on this wiki as the other two (given how many video clips and page images here are from him).

I like TWA and I'm glad he tries to be constructive, but you can see he's at least influenced by this website. Did we create a feedback loop of writing advice?
