Ambiguous Name: The Other Marty

Reason for proposal: Character-Named Trope (coming from Back To The Future), and hence all issues associated with Character-Named Tropes would apply here. As "Marty" is a very common name, the trope title is non-indicative.

EDIT for some Evidence I can plate:

  • A Google search using "Marty" yields 99,700,000 hits.
  • Using "Marty 'Back to the future'" yields 3,110,000 hits, approximately at 3%.
  • "Marty" is the diminutive of the boys' name "Martin", which based on SSA data, fluctuates between rank 113-258 in baby names, with no less than 1,000 per year (peaked at 1990, with 3,079).

SECOND EDIT: Wick Check has shown confusion between this trope and the similar The Other Darrin; out of the 129 wicks, 54 were clearly wrong (such as Firefly) or unclear (such as Trivia.Home Improvement). In here I define wrong or unclear as the aspect that the scenes by the old actor was reshot by the new actor was not included. Most of them involved a character used in pilot was recast.

THIRD EDIT: I have identified 10 more fictional characters having that name on TV Tropes. That, and we have a big trope called Marty Stu.

FOURTH EDIT: Wick Check at reply #13.

Proposed Page Action: Rename to Orwellian Recasting. I see this as somehow similar to Orwellian Retcon.

Oh, and naming it after Orwell is somehow better?

I think George Orwell and Nineteen Eighty Four is more well-known to the general population. That said, I'm open to other names.

Unless there's under-use or misuse, what problem is the name causing?

Quoteth tha rulez:

As before, explain how naming this trope after the character is unclear, and be prepared to provide substantial evidence. While a common issue, this isn't automatically a warrant to rename.

You mean "substantial evidence" of actual confusion, or "substantial evidence" of a likelihood of confusion?

What I can give is:

  • A Google search using "Marty" yields 99,700,000 hits.
  • Using "Marty 'Back to the future'" yields 3,110,000 hits, approximately at 3%.
  • "Marty" is the diminutive of the boys' name "Martin", which based on SSA data, fluctuates between rank 113-258 in baby names, with no less than 1,000 per year (peaked at 1990, with 3,079).

Out of this, I don't consider the word "Marty" is indicative of a certain Back To The Future character and can be recognized as anyone named "Martin"—not few in number—and hence I consider that an issue.

As described by the Trope Renaming Guidelines article, which should probably be read before suggesting a rename: substantial evidence of actual confusion, such as that the name is causing misuse, which is the most common problem associated with an unclear name.

Orwellian Recasting is a fine redirect but there's no need to change the primary name.

PS: Even if that comparison were relevant, the "control" search should be restricted to fictional characters named Marty, not all people named Marty. It's not, though.

v The similarity is intentional, and: what statistics?

I will give actual statistics later; but what I can see now is confusion between this and The Other Darrin.

EDIT: Added.

I have added the following information as evidence on the original post:

  • Wick Check for Misuse
  • The amount of "Marty" used as a fictional character's name.

If you group together wrong examples and unclear examples, the wick check doesn't say much. Could you make a list of those 54?

edit: Wikipedia says Rebecca Gayheart's scenes weren't used, so Firefly is correct.

Have you read the Trope Renaming Guidelines article? Because it seems like the answer is "no". Also, "misuse" and "unclear" are two different categories. Also also, a good wick check is enumerated. (Not much difference between "There is a problem, take my word for it" and "I did a wick check, take my word for it.") Here is an example of a good wc: https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/posts.php?discussion=1330174976020600100

@ 11 & 12: Full wiki check follows:

Wrong examples: (Defined to be example clearly said it's not reshot, or show format makes it unlikely.)

Total: 23

Unclear examples: (Zero Context, or Cast change is mentioned but gave no further details.)

Total: 29

22/129 = ~17% (but not sure the "post-pilot" wicks are wrong, excluding: 19/129 = ~15%)

Also, use # instead of * for a numbered list.
