Removing complaining, bashing and other negativity from the wiki

Go To

Inspired by this thread, I've noticed that this wiki doesn't have a dedicated cleanup thread for negativity.

As we all know, Complaining About Shows You Don't Like, Creator Bashing and other negativity isn't desired on the wiki, except in a few selected areas like reviews and several Darth Wiki pages (and even then, with limitations). And yet, it's one of the most common sins wiki contributors can make.

So, if you find a page, TLP or discussion whose content seems like a straight-up insult or any other bitching - including complainy soapboxing -, you might ask here for help with removing said content.

The sandbox for this project is located at Works That Require Cleanup of Complaining.

I wasn't aware MotorStorm even was a licensed game.

The entry was added all the way back in 2013 by a troper who hasn't edited since that year, which explains a lot. Anyway, I've cut it for all the reasons described.

I think the Scion (Toyota's discontinued brand) part of it was the part of the game the example was complaining about. Apparently there was a partnership that made one of their vehicles playable in the game.

[up]Then wouldn't that make the vast majority of "sim" racers "licensed" by definition.

Unless it's shilling one specific brand of vehicle (i.e. Ford Racing, Harley-Davidson) I don't think a general racing game with real brands is "licensed", it's closed to Product Placement and even then it's misuse and natter.

Is it just me or is this entry from Pokémon: The Series too bashy, as I thought the page was about characters LACKING appearences.

  • Trip. While fans reception to his early appearances were ice cold, with many seeing him as a bland rehash of Paul, he actually showed a bit of promise when his backstory regarding Alder was revealed. Not only does it help distinguish him from Paul, but it bore resemblance to that of Cheren, an Adapted Out character from the games whose arc was well-liked. Unfortunately, this potential was ultimately squandered, as not only did he never truly make it out of Paul's shadow, the conclusion of his subplot with Alder was considered incohesive and messy. While he did receive much Character Development from his loss to the Champion, said development is criticized for having nothing to do with Ash, on top of being filled to the brim with poorly written battles. Trip also has a character trait of disliking the Kanto region, which was never given any exploration. By the time of the Unova League, the writers appeared to have completely given up on him, writing him off in a complete Anti-Climax where he was eliminated in the very first round.

Sounds more like They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot, since it's less about the character being abandoned (since he did have a subplot) and more about specific plots with the character they set up but abandoned.

I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.

Any idea how to cleanup this entry from Same Character, But Different so it isn't a rant

  • In the original Ben 10 series, Zombozo was a horrifying emotion vampire who was also a great showman. In Ben 10: Ultimate Alien, he's just The Joker with a couple of magician-based superpowers.
  • Kevin in the original series was an Enfant Terrible with extra terrible, being frighteningly murderous. In some ways he was more evil than even some season Big Bads: A Take Over the World type will kill you because you're in the way; Kevin will kill you just because he can. In Ben 10: Alien Force and Ben 10: Ultimate Alien, he's reintroduced as a criminal of the more "out to make a dishonest buck" type and quickly makes a Heel–Face Turn after falling in Love at First Sight (well, first sight in the new series) with Gwen. His powers have gone from energy absorption to the ability to transform into any material he touches. When his past was discussed, it was softened considerably - apparently, viewers were supposed to believe he'd always been the mostly harmless ne'er-do-well he'd been in the first ten minutes of Alien Force. It should tell you something when The Dreaded Big Bad Vilgax, once described as "Darth Vader without the sense of humor," turned out to actually care about his people and is a Universally Beloved Leader back home and it wasn't considered to be nearly the same level of derailment as Kevin's change. Some of his behavior can be attributed to the five-year Time Skip, but certain changes like his lack of sociopathy and rather abrupt Heel–Face Turn struck a sizable chunk of the fanbase as ham-fisted. It took until Ultimate Alien before any explanation was given for how Kevin became sane - it was still being demanded at that point because even after years of this new characterization, Saint Kevin was just too big a horse pill for fans to swallow. In all fairness the writers did have an explanation in mind they would have used in the third season of Alien Force, but thanks to Executive Meddling it was scrapped and they ended up having to incorporate it into the sequel series instead.
  • It's to the point that Ben and Gwen giving Kevin a chance needed every bit as much explaining away because it's just that unthinkable after what he'd been like. After a time travel episode that Original Series Ben wasn't supposed to remember once he'd returned to the past, Professor Paradox explained that he'd remember it very faintly, maybe just enough to consider the idea of Kevin becoming good when meeting him again. Omniverse took it farther, establishing that the gang had met the criminal-but-not-psychotic version of Kevin between the original series and AF/UA, though this serves as another Series Continuity Error on Omniverse's part since it was already established that Ben and Gwen hadn't seen Kevin since he was locked in the Null Void. Yes, it actually took years to make the new Kevin make sense, and more years to make Ben and Gwen entertaining the idea that Kevin could be in their midst and not kill them for fun make sense! That's how you know you've fallen into this trope big-time. note

Not sure what to think about this from Scythe:

  • So Okay, It's Average: It's a pretty underwhelming worker-placement board game, but at least it's functional (which is rarely the case for Kickstarter-backed games) and comes with enough feelies to make it interesting one way or another.

This deaf, dumb and blind kid sure plays a mean pinball.

This example from Station Ident (emphasis mine) veers off into seemingly irrelevant complaining, complete with Weasel Words:

  • In 2007, the "Window on the World" idents were launched, which saw the 2 represented as a window or cut-out to various scenery. Often related to the show about to premiere, expect to see the 2 shape as a car sunroof or side mirror before Top Gear. An ident of a tent door in the shape of a 2 unzipping open revealed many other tents outside to open broadcasts of the Glastonbury outdoor music festival. The tent ident also has varying levels of daylight outside, which seems to reflect the current time in Britain. Unfortunately, it downplayed the humor of the 2 by depicting it as an inanimate object in different forms to appeal to serious programmes; some fans were not happy about this and it only got worse twice (first in 2009, then in 2013). In July 2014, the 1991-2001 idents were revived alongside the current set (and a few special ones) to mark the channel's 50th anniversary. The Window on the World set was retired completely in November 2014 in favor of a full, second run for the 1991-2001 idents.

[up] Not only complaining, I really can't parse what it's saying from the bolded section onwards. I'm fine with cutting that off.

Stories don't tell us monsters exist; we knew that already. They show us that monsters can be trademarked and milked for years.

[up]Granted, the 90s idents did make a comeback in the late 2010s (I saw the Dog one before many an episode of It Takes Two!). That point is valid, but I think it should be moved to its own sub-bullet to better serve its purpose of informing instead of being part of complaining.

On Opinion Myopia

Most of this example is fine, but the bolded part seems unnecessarily vitriolic and feels like a violation of the ROCEJ (since it describes the fandoms as "cringe" and has a pothole to Boomerang Bigot, which is probably not a great move. Not to mention it's NRLEP).

What do you think?

I think it can be reworded to replace "cringe" with something more descriptive like "fandoms for children's shows" because it does feel relevant to the point of the example that even some adults who are fans of children's shows can get judgmental towards being in a fandom for a toddler's show.

I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.

[up] If we did reword it, we probably shouldn't use "children's shows" because I am reasonably sure that Sonic the Hedhog is not a children's show[lol]. Maybe "media aimed at kids".
