Removing complaining, bashing and other negativity from the wiki

Go To

Inspired by this thread, I've noticed that this wiki doesn't have a dedicated cleanup thread for negativity.

As we all know, Complaining About Shows You Don't Like, Creator Bashing and other negativity isn't desired on the wiki, except in a few selected areas like reviews and several Darth Wiki pages (and even then, with limitations). And yet, it's one of the most common sins wiki contributors can make.

So, if you find a page, TLP or discussion whose content seems like a straight-up insult or any other bitching - including complainy soapboxing -, you might ask here for help with removing said content.

The sandbox for this project is located at Works That Require Cleanup of Complaining.

Literature. The Last Dragon Chronicles has some snarky word cruft. I'm not sure if it's enough to warrant it going on the list of Works That Require Cleanup of Complaining, but I feel it harms the article's objectivity somewhat.

This Force Unleashed example on Updated Re-release seems really... off to me. It feels like an example written when the game was new, with this very snarky tone and even using the word "egregious" in a way I don't think is allowed anymore.

  • Star Wars: The Force Unleashed is a pretty egregious example. First they release the "Ultimate Sith Edition" in the fancy tin with collectors' cards (one card included; collect all ten!), all the DLC, etc. Pretty standard procedure for a Game of the Year edition, except the reviews didn't get it anywhere close enough to being 2008's Game of the Year by anyone's count, so hence the "Ultimate Sith Edition." So anyway, this edition of the game contains all the past DLC, plus an exclusive level with exclusive achievements that LucasArts pretty specifically said you wouldn't be able to get anywhere else. Naturally, this angered a lot of fans who had already bought all of the DLC, and didn't want to pay $40 for $10 worth of content. So for those of them that did, imagine their surprise when LucasArts announced out of the blue a few months later that hey, the exclusive level can be downloaded by anyone now! This makes the "Ultimate Sith Edition" even more worthless, when you consider that they didn't even make new menus.

Fridge.Wish 2023's Fridge Logic entry is less 'fridge logic' and more 'complaining about the writing' and 'Disney doesn't understand itself.'

"The main issue of the plot is that, despite the name and what the characters say, Wish isn't actually about wishes, it's about goals, since that's what Magnifico actually works on (as the opening narration states, he extracts the desire that drives you), which is why they are all things the characters can achieve on their own merits. The most apparent case is the Expanded Universe Novelization A Recipe for Adventure revealing that Asha's mother's wish was for everyone to see Asha glow (something that she can influence by raising and guiding her) rather than for her husband to recover from illness (something outside her power). However, the Wishing Star (and Fairy Godmother, since that's what Asha becomes) operate on actual wishes, things that are completely outside of one's control and as such need to be granted by other forces/people: Cinderella cannot overcome class differences and an abusive family locking her out of resources through effort or hard work, same for Pinocchio becoming actual flesh and blood. It happens in the movie itself when the star gives Valentino a voice and sapience. By conflating the two concepts both the plot and message end up being undercut, and it even damages the goal of the movie as a celebration of Disney, since it shows that Disney either doesn't understand its own ideas or doesn't care about them.

Part of the problem might be that in recent decades, Disney films (and stories like "Cinderella" more generally) have often been accused of encouraging passivity in their listeners (particularly young girls) by suggesting they cannot change their own fates and Hard Work Hardly Works, and the filmmakers wanted to avoid a story in which that would pretty much be the message, so they made the "wishes" more-or-less easily attainable things. But again, this was something that should have been ironed out at the screenplay stage. Ironically, one of the film's promotional partners was the Make-a-Wish Foundation, which does understand the concept of wishes quite well, being a charitable foundation that arranges for terminally ill children to do something that would have been impossible with just their families' means (such as visiting Disney Theme Parks or meeting celebrities)."

[up] Yeah, I noticed the Wish pages seem to attract a lot of complaining about the movie and bashing of its characters (or in Magnifico's case, gushing or defending him instead.)

It seems to make sense as Fridge Logic, but can someone who knows the film rework the entry to be less complainy about Disney?

While cleaning up Obvious Beta wicks, I came across this on Dead by Daylight:

  • Obvious Beta: Hooo boy. Looking on the Steam forums and in the reviews, there are dozens of reports of bugs, from the game crashing when you try to start a generator to the Trapper's traps clipping through the ground to lag because the killer's player is also the host of the game. Also, there's abundant hacking and griefing the game, and the fact that the developers seem to be constantly balancing the game based upon fan complaints.
    • Even after the game was officially released and thus no longer in "beta", things such as keyboard control remapping, a very basic feature necessary for playing on non-QWERTY keyboards, were not added until several months after launch.

I question how valid this entry is (can't be sure given that I'm not familiar with the game at all), and even if it is valid, it's written in a rather negative tone.

[up][up] As someone who doesn't play DBD but watches Not Otzdarva semi-frequently, I believe I can help. Half of this entry seems like it's complaining about how the game was at launch (which, keep in mind, was in 2016) and the other half literally just says that the developers are frequently patching the game in response to community feedback, but framed in a complainy way, so it's misuse. if there's anything to be salvaged here, it's something to do with how the game was pretty unstable at launch and how it's easily exploitable by cheaters, but even then I'm not sure if "this multiplayer game can be easily exploited by cheaters" is equivalent to Obvious Beta or not.

It's not about the gold; it's about the glory.

Both these examples under the Idiot Houdini just seem like a way to bash the studios by calling them "idiots" even though they are not even characters:

  • Even after causing the cancellation of the Lupin III "Red Jacket" series by stupidly distributing the first anime film outside of Japan, where the estate of Maurice LeBlanc (which at the time owned the copyright on the Arsène Lupin name) was more likely to notice an infringement on its copyright, Toho is still distributing new adaptations of Monkey Punch's manga in Japan. To their credit, though, they were much more careful afterwards as far as international distribution was concerned while the Lupin name was still in copyright elsewhere (i.e., they often forced international distributors to change Lupin's name), which is likely the only reason why TMS Entertainment (who produced the anime) didn't turn to a new distributor immediately after the lawsuit.
  • In a similar example, Studio DEEN took over adapting Rurouni Kenshin after the very popular Kyoto Arc and quickly ran the show's quality to the ground with poorly done filler, eventually leading to the show getting canceled before they could adapt the final story arc. Despite this, years later Studio DEEN got to work on a new two-part Kenshin OVA which, to everyone's disappointment, turned out not be an adaptation of the story arc that concluded the manga but was instead a remake of the Kyoto Arc.

Wondering what I should do with this entry on YMMV.Blood Plus:

  • Draco in Leather Pants: Diva, holy shit Diva. Both fanboys and fangirls give her far more sympathy than she deserves, given that while she has a genuinely good Freudian Excuse, she is also incredibly ruthless and often needlesly cruel— not to mention a rapist/murderess who never shows any regret for raping and killing Riku. This is sometimes paired with them villainizing and bashing Saya, and more frequently with trying to excuse away Diva's evil deeds due to her Dark and Troubled Past.

As far as complaining goes this definitely isn't an egregious case, but the entry ignores that she was intended to be sympathetic, even though she wasn't for most fans. There's already an UU entry on the same page covering that exactly, so this also just feels kind of redundant.

If she was meant to be sympathetic, then I guess it's a cut? IDK. If she's UU then is she even liked enough for Draco? Or is she just a Base-Breaking Character?

[up] I mean, to be more specific—I haven't read the manga, but the page mentions on the UU entry that her being a rapist and murderer had been cut entirely, so I think it's more likely that people just accept that part as non-canon and treat her solely like the manga counterpart. Which...is something, but isn't really Draco. I could be wrong, but I don't think I've seen anyone acknowledge her MOE and treat her sympathetically.

I found this on YMMV.Wish 2023

  • So Okay, It's Average: While the movie's not terribly made, the consensus is that the movie focuses too hard on just referencing Disney's past works and paying homage to them while failing to establish anything too new or original, like how Asha is yet again another Adorkable girl protagonist who speaks in quips. The most positive response the movie has gotten simply amounts to it being a “serviceable,” simple movie, and not much more...which, in the face of it being hyped up by the studio as "A story a century in the making" and the culmination of the centennial Milestone Celebration, was more than a little disappointing.

Overall, the entry is fine and counts based on what I have seen online in my opinion. However, my question is the bolded part. I don't see what that has to do with the trope, and it feels like stealth complaining to me. Any other opinions?

I think that bolded part could serve more as Hype Backlash. I definitely think a lot of the negative reception came from Disney hyping this movie up as a return to "the classics" and a Milestone Celebration, only to release something generally accepted as pretty standard modern Disney fare.
