Which namespace does this work belong in?

Go To

This is the sticky thread for questions related to the namespacing of works. As in, "which is the right namespace for this work?"

Ideally, questions already answered are covered on the Namespace Map. If you know a namespacing issue has already been resolved, but it is not yet documented on the Map, please update the Map.

If you want to suggest a new namespace, don't post here, but in Suggesting New Namespaces instead.

    Original OP:
I busy myself with moving works off of Main/ and I've encountered a number of cases where I can't decide to which namespace something should go. Some of these questions may have been asked before, but there seems to be no general reference point for namespace issues. Maybe this could become a sticky thread for all media-namespace related questions?

For easier reference, I've numbered my questions:

  • #1: Where do animated films go? They seem to be distributed rather inconsistenly over Film/ (Puss In Boots, Whats Opera Doc), WesternAnimation/ (Disneys Anne Frank, Snow White), Anime/ (Princess Mononoke) and Disney/ (Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs, Der Fuehrers Face).
  • #2: There are a few songs which have their own pages ("Pirate Jenny"). Where do they go – to Music/ or to Literature/ ?
  • #3: Where do composers go – to Music/ , or are they to be treated like other creators, which hitherto stay on Main/ ?
  • #4: Where do Talk Shows, Game Shows and News Broadcasts go? I guess you could call these formats Live-Action TV but they're not really "TV series", as in Series/.
  • #5: Am I right in assuming that Puppet Shows go to Series/ ?
  • #6: What about “hybrid shows”, i.e. segment shows that incorporate both live action and animation? (e.g. Die Sendung Mit Der Maus)
  • #7: Where to put picture books? I am thinking of books like Der Struwwelpeter and Max and Moritz — books that are really not complete without their illustrations. They are not (yet) ComicBook/s, but to sort them under Literature/ feels a little unsatisfactory too.
  • #8: The rule is to put works into the namespace of their original medium. However, once in a while there is a work which is little known in its original medium, and almost exclusively known by its adaptation. I’m thinking of Das Boot, for example: there's a novel, but it is almost exclusively known by the Petersen movie.
  • #9: Should One Book Authors who are invariably tied to a single work be treated as a creator or a work page rather?— Currently, we have Samuel Pepys and Herodotus, but shouldn't these pages be at Literature/The Diary of Samuel Pepys and Literature/The Histories rather?
  • #10: There are cases where I’m unsure whether to use the English or the original title. Is there are hard rule that determines whether Der Ring Des Nibelungen goes to Theatre/Der Ring des Nibelungen or Theatre/The Ring of the Nibelung? Even Wikipedia uses the original title.

I'd be grateful for input.

Quick update Injustice (2021) is now a thing so Injustice now has 4 so I don't really care what happens with Injustice: Year Zero as I know some had a problem with the namespace I placed it in.

[up][up] I would assume Web Animation, but please be careful to make sure that these videos employ narrative tropes. This causes a lot of confusion for some tropers and the lack of narrative tropes frequently leads to troping the creators of the work.

Not sure this is the right place to ask, but I noticed on, to give an example, VisualNovel.Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney, on the header that has the bubbles for the various namespaces, the Visual Novel namespace is a "low priority" one, as in it gets relegated to the "More..." drop-down list. As a work namespace, shouldn't Visual Novel always be prioritised as one of the visible bubbles?

[up] I feel like it did at some point, the comedy/drama masks? Maybe it was on the wrong one, on Theater/ ?

I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.

Yes, the namespace uses the Commonwealth spelling, but the icon still hasn’t been moved.

Yes, there's a drama masks icon on Theater/. And it actually used to be a stage curtain, so they changed the icon, but not the namespace it's attached to.

Where should Bill Cosby: Himself go? It's a stand-up routine that was released both theatrically and as an album.

The only other Cosby album to have its own page is in the Audio Play namespace. I'm thinking it should be in the Film namespace since the theatrical release first, but maybe with the Audio Play as a redirect?

That sounds right, but include a comment on the page that crosswicking should be done to Stand-up Comedy folders, since that's the original medium that the routine comes from.

Speaking of the Visual Novel namespace, Chicken Police is in the video game namespace. However, as someone who is currently playing it, it plays, looks, and feels a lot like a standard visual novel like the ones in the Danganronpa franchise and Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth. I'd like to hear some more opinions on this (if it hasn't been brought up already).

Hi, I believe I'm in the correct discussion to ask this:

I think the work Yamara is in the wrong namespace; considering it started as a print comic in a magazine, it should be in ComicStrip/ just like Nodwick.

I'd say move it to the comic strip namespace and keep the webcomic page as a redirect.

Film.Pokemon seems misplaced, as most of these are anime movies, not live-action films. Maybe it could just be sent to a folder on Franchise.Pokemon or something?

I am guessing that someone wanted an index page for all the Pokémon Anime films but couldn't find a better place, If someone wants to keep it around we could do something like Anime.Pokemon Films

I also think it fits better under the Franchise/ page. Those are usually indexed anyway, aren't they?

Looking at how the franchise page is set up adding them there might clutter the list quite a bit and probably force a fourth bullet point so I am not sure if that can be done. The franchise page is already indexed though.

I think we can still fit them. We can probably make animation its own folder at this point to reduce the indentation.

I've been meaning to change the namespace for one to several work pages that focus on Virtual YouTuber type of content, as the current namespace for hololive, Nijisanji, and Kizuna Ai (Web Animation) don't seem to fit. It feels like they hardly qualify as animation (aside from Holo No Graffiti, but that isn't the main focus of hololive), with content ranging from Lets Plays, group skits, singing, and 3D motion capture, all streamed live.

Here's some separate posts discussing this, since I'm bad at discussions in general.

Edit: I should also mention that Web Video, despite it's rather neutral namespace to seemingly describe videos on the web in general, is describe by its main page and Laconic page as Live Action videos on the web, not exactly fitting for Virtual YouTubers. The only other alternative is Web Original, as broad as you could get with web content.

Real-time animation is still animation. Hell of a strain on the animators, though.

While motion capture / Live2D is consider an animation, to exclusively call it as such feels... surface level, I guess? Like, sure they use a Digital Avatar, but they also do the above games, singing, etc. And calling it all Web Animation just personally feels unfitting.

That feels like calling a Gaming Discussion channel a Let's Play because they use gameplay footage for 70% of their videos despite not outright playing a video game.

Worse case scenario, I'm just having a dumb opinion... On another topic, we already have other Virtual YouTuber pages that were created later on which use the Web Video namespace (VShojo), itself a problem as I stated above.
