Alright, so in TRS Badass Gay came up for discussion and it was agreed that there appears to big problem with the Badass X tropes in general, which needs to be sorted out until something can be ruled on for Badass Gay.
Here's a courtesy link: TRS page. And Badass page with its subtropes. You can also visit the sandbox page here.
Noted Problems include:
- Tropes are just listings of characters people thing are badass who happen to have a certain trait. (The Badass + Trait Problem)
- Badass X as a naming scheme is actually very vague and doesn't give a lot of insight into what the character trope actually is, assuming it is a trope.
- Badass X as a naming scheme proliferates the use of Badass + Trait 'tropes'.
Suggested things to do include:
- Make it a requirement that a badass character trope means a character is "badass because of a trait", or "badass in spite of a trait".
- Renaming away from the Badass X naming scheme as much as possible.
- Cut, redefine or re-purpose things that are just Badass + trait.
There are also a lot of tropes that seem to be valid character-types, but have the naming scheme 'Badass X', when there's more to the trope than that. There are also a lot of prop or event or whatever tropes that need to be gone through as well.

The new crowner's hooked and the thread title's updated.
Seems nobody is aware of this, but unlike the rest of the Badass pages, Badass/Fanfic still exists..

A cruel, sick joke is still a joke, and sometimes all you can do is laugh.I did a redirect.
Calling for the two options in green.
Alright, I've copied the definitions to the Analysis.Badass page and the trope list to Sandbox.Badass Trope List and put in a request to move it to Main.
For the Main page for Badass, does this look good?
"Badass" is a fanspeak term that can mean many different things. For a list of what it might mean, see the Analysis subpage.
Do not add examples to this page or elsewhere on the wiki. Instead, we'll refer you to this list of tropes that might contain the one you're looking for. All wicks to this page should be changed to point to whichever particular trope they refer to, if any.

A cruel, sick joke is still a joke, and sometimes all you can do is laugh.I approve.
A cruel, sick joke is still a joke, and sometimes all you can do is laugh.Clear and concise.
So can someone please bring me up to speed on the "Badass is no longer a trope?" business? Seen it a lot over the last few days.
"I'll show you the Dark Side." CM actors and killsIt's been determined that "Badass" is too nebulous and undefined of a term. Lacking proper definition, it's being constantly misused to describe any character who ever has a Moment of Awesome at any point in any work, and it's impossible to explain why this is misuse because there is no actual definition or precise criteria for the concept.
Effectively, "Badass" means "I think this is cool." For this reason, it's been converted into a Fan Speak term and culled from usage as a trope.
My Tumblr. Currently liveblogging Haruhi Suzumiya and revisiting Danganronpa V3.That said, we are also going to come up with separate tropes for covering certain broad concepts that typically result in someone or something being called "badass".
Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus. If someone is interested in sponsoring them, sure.
Since it gained approval and we've already voted on it in the crowner, I've swapped in the new disclaimer.
You've got roaming bands of armed, aggressive, tyrannical plumbers coming to your door, saying "Use our service, or else!"Why has the list of possible definitions of Badass been put on Analysis.Badass? Definitions are not analysis.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanWe arrived at those definitions by analyzing the many ways that badass is used and the related concepts in each one.
Pardon, not the question I was asking. The list is fine, the place it's put into is what I wonder.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanI remember mentioning that Analysis.Panthera Awesome follows this approach, and responses to the suggestion were generally positive.
Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus. That's because that page is supposed to be a trope. Badass is not, so moving the definitions elsewhere just hides them.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanI believe the idea behind that is having in the Main page could encourage continued tropping. There's a link to the definition list on the main page and that's all.
Some other items I felt should be discussed here:
- Badass still has a Quotes page that might give the wrong impression that it's a trope page. Most of the examples on the page are really Badass Boast, so could be moved there instead. Also not sure about the laconic page, but I could go either way.
- I've seen more than a few examples of Memetic Badass being used "in-universe". The only time I think that could be valid is if it's dealing with a Show Within a Show, but most of these I think are misuse for Living Legend or Shrouded in Myth.
- There are a number of tropes in YKTTW that still proliferate the disparaged "Badass X" naming scheme: Badass Bisexual, Height Equals Badassery, Badass Rape Victim, Exasperated Badass, Badass Establishers Index, Badass Reincarnation, Drunk But Badass, and Battle Damaged Badass. Which of these do you all think look worth saving, which might need a better name, and which should be canned?
Also, since Badass is basically at the wick cleaning stage at this point (probably setting a record for sheer size), are there any other tropes we should be dealing with? There was an unresolved discussion for Badass Princess a few pages back, Badass Native has a bit of a zero context example problem, and is Pop-Cultured Badass really tropable?

You've got roaming bands of armed, aggressive, tyrannical plumbers coming to your door, saying "Use our service, or else!"Cut or move most of the quotes. After reading through them, as said, they're just Badass Boasts or can easily be classified as a different trope. To wit:
This literally has all the tropes you need to put it elsewhere right in the quote.
Easily a Badass Bookworm or Genius Bruiser quote.
This is about the only quote I'm willing to . It's an observation.
"Badass Bisexual" is about the only one I'd consider approving, but I could have sworn Badass Gay covered bisexual characters, too, unless I'm mistaken... Anyway, the rest just proliferate the "Badass X" epidemic and could probably fit in other tropes. "Drunk But Badass" is Drunken Master, "Battle Damaged Badass" can be covered a by number of them like Determinator, Blood Knight, The Berserker, and whatnot, and the rest seem like glorified Natter.
In light of how most princesses are portrayed in fiction, I think Badass Princess warrants a keep in my opinion. After all, Warrior Prince is the Spear Counterpart, and it's a keeper. Characters that are Badass Native explicitly must be stated to have some sort Native heritage. They can't just look or act the part (like how Subverted Trope can't be partially or kind of subverted; it is or it isn't). Pop-Cultured Badass can go either way. I consider it the modern-day example of Cultured Badass, but I don't think it's as commonplace.
A cruel, sick joke is still a joke, and sometimes all you can do is laugh. My only gripe about the Jurassic World quote is that the raptors in question are not tame by any common measure of the word, and that's by their handler Owen Grady's own admission and exemplified very soon after he said that admission when he has to get a New Meat handler out of the enclosure before they rip him apart.
Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus. The problem is Badass Gay implies only gay characters, as seen in the description only specifying homosexual characters, but there's entries in the Badass Gay page about bisexual characters. It's also potholed to Badass Bisexual and Badass Lesbian.
I think the issue with Badass Gay is it needs a rename, but the obvious ones (Badass Queer/Queer but Badass) I can see a lot of people having an issue with because Queer is still a slur in a lot of places.
Isn't Badass Gay what started this mess?
Honestly I don't see anything tropeworthy about it.
If a tree falls in the forest and nobody remembers it, who else will you have ice cream with?
I also noticed that Badass has a Playing With subpage. Since that hasn't been valid anymore since this was redefined to a Fan Speak term a while back and uses the old definition that was on the page, I'll submit it to the cutlist.
