YMMV / Nia Jax

Go To

  • Awesome Music: Her entrance music.
  • Base-Breaking Character: Big time in the late-2010s. Though many agree that her in-ring work has been adequate, others have a strong dislike towards her due to her hit-or-miss mic skills and somewhat inferior wrestling ability compared to the other women of Raw (e.g. Sasha Banks, Ember Moon, Mickie James). This divisiveness would get exponentially worse after she legitimately demolished Becky Lynch's face with a careless punch, among other incidents (thus gaining a reputation of being sloppy and dangerous to work with).
  • Broken Base: Her entrance theme when she initially debuted. A lot of people called Soundtrack Dissonance and not being appropriate for a violent wrestling monster. Others pointed out that the song outright said Nia was "not like most girls" - making sense that she would have a theme unlike a typical monster heel; her in-ring persona was far more Alpha Bitch like than a typical monster as well. It didn't take long for the criticism to die down and divert toward her in-ring skills.
  • Designated Villain: Her feud with Ronda Rousey had turned Nia heel for literally one week, not too long after being the Face of a bully/victim feud.
  • Hollywood Pudgy: As soon as she debuted on NXT, fans were immediately commenting on her weight - some even asking if WWE had made her gain weight to fit the character. Regardless of size, Breaking Ground shows that she's just as agile as the other women. She would later be the victim of a weight-related storyline in 2018 - with Alexa Bliss and Mickie James bullying her.
  • Iron Woobie: Proved herself to be one in her feud with Alexa Bliss, eventually coming out on top.
  • Narm:
    • After overhearing Alexa's hurtful comments about Nia, Nia would then take her frustration out by destroying her wardrobe. However, it ended up looking more like a high school student trashing a rival's locker than an intense wrestling feud.
    • The two promos she delivered during her second feud with Ronda had her abruptly scream "MY TITLE!!!!!" into the mic at ear-piercing levels. There was zero build-up or reason for the complete change in tone. What was likely intended to make Nia come across like a slightly off-kilter monster backfired as fans were either amused or irritated about their bleeding ears.
    • The bizarre shift in Nia's character towards the end of 2018 saw her turn from a quiet, stoic Wrestling Monster to an arrogant, somewhat unstable Alpha Bitch; it was not well received not only due to the controversy surrounding Becky Lynch's injury, but also because of her very poor and unconvincing promos at the time (as mentioned above).
    • Nia trended on social media during the February 8, 2021, episode of Raw, where she missed a leg drop and landed butt-first on the apron, screaming out in pain, an usual spot on a wrestling match, except that in this case, Nia afterwards shouted "MY HOLE!". This has ascended itself into a Memetic Mutation.
  • Never Live It Down:
    • A week before the 2018 Survivor Series, Nia punched Becky Lynch so hard that she was legitimately injured, forcing Becky to be removed from the highly anticipated match between her and Ronda Rousey that had been building for weeks. Fans were not happy to say the least. During the event itself, Nia was booed to oblivion, especially when she won the Women's Traditional Survivor Series elimination tag team match as the sole survivor. Many fans believed that she was getting rewarded for being sloppy and injuring a coworker.
    • It only got worse in 2020, when she underwent a series of matches with Kairi Sane that caused the Internet favourite some nasty head and neck injuries: first a poorly-timed buckle bomb, note  and then a botch involving steel steps. When Kairi abruptly departed from WWE to return to Japan and left the ring for a year and a half, Nia found herself taking colossal amounts of blame for it.
  • Rescued from the Scrappy Heap: Her return in 2023 was met initially with great disapproval due to reasons stated below. However as she got into feuds with Raquel Rodriguez and Becky Lynch, it became clear that Nia had actually improved immensely, and was actually putting on some legitimately solid matches with the two. While she isn't without her detractors, it's nowhere near as bad as it was before.
  • The Scrappy: Was originally more of a Base-Breaking Character, but by 2021 she had become firmly this due to her ever-rising botch count and increasingly weak performances - her August 30 match with Charlotte Flair particularly gained notoriety for it turning into a clear shoot towards the end after Nia messed up a suplex and almost dropped Charlotte on her head.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character:
    • Many fans feel that turning Nia back heel and returning back to her bully persona, just to feud with Ronda Rousey made her feud with Alexa Bliss (and Nia’s face turn) pointless, because during Nia’s storyline with Alexa, Nia was acting like a hero for those who were made fun of for being larger than anyone else. It was made even worse due to the fact that the heel turn didn't even last more than one episode.
    • Adding on to above, many were upset that Nia had dropped the championship to Alexa only two months after winning it. Fans had thought that the creative team had never given Jax a proper chance at being a quality champion since Rousey was essentially her first and only challenger to the title (of course this consensus went straight out the window following Becky Lynch's injury).
  • Unexpected Character: Despite rumors going around that WWE had been planning a "big" surprise for the 2019 Royal Rumble, absolutely nobody predicted Nia attacking R-Truth when he entered the Men's Rumble at #30 and taking his spot herself.note  Anyone who claims otherwise is a damn liar.note
  • X-Pac Heat:
    • Nia had a bit of a reputation for botches and causing injuries to her opponents, but after what happened the week of Survivor Series 2018, where she punched Becky Lynch square in the face, giving Lynch a concussion that forced WWE to call off the Lynch vs. Rousey match that the whole PPV had been built around and find a new SmackDown representative, everyone was practically calling for Nia's head on a stick.
    • Jax herself seemed to recognize it with a tweet of "isn't anyone going to ask me how my fist feels?" WWE are trying to parley it into proper Heel heat by doubling down on Nia's "monster" booking in the wake of her smashing Becky's face. For the most part it did not work, with the crowds becoming even more indifferent of her presence (arguably even becoming one of the most disliked competitors on the Raw roster).
    • Jax's return from injury in the spring of 2020 garnered very mixed reactions, with many fans still skeptical over her borderline reckless in-ring work. The criticism over her dangerous behavior exploded into discussion once again on the April 20th edition of RAW, when she botched a Buckle Bomb on Kairi Sane (a major Ensemble Dark Horse), very nearly injuring her in the process. The controversy about how dangerous and careless she is became so great that the company decided to ban the Buckle Bomb move altogether (at least from Jax's arsenal as Seth Rollins continues to use it).
    • She also didn't do herself any favours by talking about complaining to WWE bosses about Ronda Rousey hurting Alexa Bliss in the ring. Specifically the part where described it as "standing up for her", which many decried as hypocritical in light of Nia's own history of injuring people.
    • After her release in late 2021 (alongside roughly two dozen others in the same instance), she stated on Twitter a return to the ring was "highly unlikely". Needless to say, the reaction of the wrestling fandom was predictable.
