Ada Twist, Scientist is a 2021 Netflix cartoon created by Chris Nee and produced by Barack and Michelle Obama (yes, really). It is based on a children's book series of the same name.
The series follows the titular Ada Twist, a kid scientist who, along with her friends Rosie and Iggy, learns about the world through experiments.
Ada Twist, Scientist provides examples of:
- Advertising by Association: The trailers advertised the series as "from the creator of Doc McStuffins and Vampirina".
- All-CGI Cartoon: Like most shows made by Brown Bag Films, the show is animated in CGI.
- Alliterative Name: Rosie Rivere.
- Amicable Exes: "Cake Twists/Garden Party" shows that Iggy's parents are divorced, but they get along pretty well as evidenced by them attending Ada's garden party.
- Animated Adaptation: Based on a 2016 picture book.
- Autism in Media: Ada's cousin, Nassan, is autistic and non-verbal. His character is based on Nassan Wright-Arbubakkr, an autistic boy whose story inspired the foundation "Nassan's Place".
- Black and Nerdy: Ada herself, a Black scientist.
- Creative Closing Credits: The end credits for each episode has detailed artistic visuals, with the characters drawn how they are in the illustrations of the original book series.
- Edutainment Show: Teaches kids basic scientific principles.
- Family Theme Naming: Ada and her brother, Arthur, both have names beginning with the letter A.
- Forgotten Anniversary: "Cake Twists" has Ada, Rosie, and Iggy make a cake when Mrs. Twist forgets her anniversary.
- No Full Name Given: Ada's parents do not have first names; the credits simply refer to them as Mom and Dad Twist.
- Power Trio: Ada is friends with Rosie and Iggy.
- Shout-Out: Rosie's appearance and name are based on the famous feminist icon Rosie the Riveter.
- Theme Naming: The three main characters are Ada Twist, Scientist, Iggy Peck, Architect, and Rosie Revere, Engineer.
- Token Trio: A rare example when the member of colour is both female and the protagonist: Ada (Black girl), Iggy (white boy), and Rosie (white girl).
- Tomboy and Girly Girl: Rosie is the tomboy to Ada's Girly Girl. Her main interest, engineering, is more masculine than Ada's scientific interest.
- Tomboyness Upgrade: As tomboyish as Rosie was in the books, she at least casually wore a dress with stockings. In the cartoon, Rosie wears short overalls.
- Two Girls and a Guy: Ada and Rosie are girls and Iggy is a boy.
