    Story
The woman saying "Avenge your Emperor!" is Grand Admiral Rae Sloane.
It makes sense considering she helps lead the Imperial Remnant and then becomes the founder of the First Order in the Aftermath trilogy.
  • At the very least Admiral Sloane should appear as a supporting character in the game. Considering her pivotal role in the Empire and the First Order after the Battle of Endor and the fact that the game's storyline both focuses on that time period and is canonical, it only makes sense she would show up.
  • Gallius Rax and Brendol Hux could also show up with Sloane as well.
    • Jossed. Sloane never appears in the story, though she is mentioned briefly.

The TIE fighter pilot group from the trailer is Inferno Squad.
The book being called the titular group fits the naming conventions of Twilight Company and Legends side games Renegade Squadron, Mobile Squadrons, and Elite Squadron.
  • It would serve as a parallel to Twilight Company.
  • It seems strange that Inferno Squad had to be commissioned by the Imperial Navy rather than the Imperial Army. Perhaps they're elite TIE pilots?
  • British Amazon listing Inferno Squad with Battlefront II suggests that it might be an accompaniment novel if it isn't an error. As of this writing, the Inferno Squad book cover is not final, so perhaps they want to reveal its connection to Battlefront II later.
    • Confirmed.

The plot will be a Deconstruction of the Rooting for the Empire trope
Given that it was recently announced that the main writer of the infamous video game Spec Ops: The Line, Walt Williams, will be writing the story for the campaign mode of the game, it's a possibility and a nice switch of the morality spectrum being challenged like it was in Rogue One. This would be the case if Iden is given the Dark Action Girl treatment to a T but also subverting the Protagonist-Centered Morality trope.

The game will start off as the trailer indicates, Inferno Squadron being sent to Endor on the Emperor's orders. They do well until the second Death Star blows up. This shakes up the squadron, Iden Versio included. It's at this point where the game focuses on the origins of the First Order as seen in the Sequel Trilogy, but maybe we can get on the Imperial faction got not only the personnel and army, but the ideology as well.As the game progresses, we see Inferno Squadron taking on other Rebel forces and some minor cells. But it won't the standard 'Protagonist is on the right side regardless of faction' mentality most games have that plays as the 'evil' faction. Just like Spec Ops, it will give players order to commit atrocities like execution of prisoners and bombing places, which are very hot-topics in war. And in the case there's a heroic Rebel present (probably Luke) and starts telling them of how their methods is why they're hated in the galaxy, Iden retorts by saying that the Rebels deserved it for being brutal, lying and inconsiderate killers for disrupting the peace of the Galaxy and these orders were necessary if it was necessary to keep the peace the Emperor intended. Of course, we can clearly see that they have no excuses for committing such orders and only did because of the Imperial upbringing.

As the game progresses, we can see how much they become more and more fanatical in their ideals for the Empire to the point that the only way to keep the ideals of the Empire alive is to kidnap children (as indicated by The Force Awakens). At the same time, Iden may start seeing doubts in her cause but at the same time, still wants to honor the Emperor's memory. By the end of the game, either Iden Versio may end up committing suicide after realizing that she was nothing but a brainwashed killer who caused enough damage, stay in the First Order just as fanatical they are, or even gain a chance of redemption by leaving them but leaving to unknown corners in the galaxy, feeling she's unworthy of gaining redemption for what she did.

  • Jossed. Iden and Del defect in the fifth mission of the campaign; the vast majority of the story mode is them fighting the Empire.

Iden will lose everyone close to her.
Her father will die when his Star Destroyer gets destroyed, Hask and some of the squad gets killed in combat, fleeing into the Unknown Regions means she can never see her mother again, and whoever is left of Inferno Squadron either start to lose it, are arrested, or have a Heel Realization/Heel–Face Turn and leave the group.

Despite being tired, jaded, and having lost everything, Iden continues her service to the Empire, in belief that her personal life is not as important as the rest of the Galaxy's state, though she's obviously hurting and miserable from losing her friends and family. This means that "I've waited thirty years for this. [...] The day the real war began." is It's Personal than just Undying Loyalty.

If anyone asks about why she's still with the Empire/First Order, she'll claim its mainly because the Empire was a force of good and she wants to avenge it, but really, it's kind of both that and avenging her loved ones.

There will be some sort of reference to Thrawn, possibly hinting what happened to him after Rebels.
It could even tie-in with something going on in Rebels Season 4, as the game will be released around the same time the season starts.

  • Jossed. Thrawn is never mentioned.

At the very least, characters from cartoons, comics, books, etc. will be namedropped and/or get cameos during the story.
For example, a General Syndulla could be mentioned as being a prominent leader in the Alliance, a Colonel Kallus could also be mentioned, propaganda works by "the Artist", etc.

  • We do get a bunch of references to this effect throughout the main campaign; Rae Sloane is mentioned in the Endor mission, Gallius Rax gets two separate namedrops, we see Shara Bey and Queen Soruna's starfighters on Naboo, the Jakku mission has radio chatter that references Wedge Antilles and Snap Wexley, among others.

Zay and Shriv were still in the middle of negotiations with the Resistance's allies in the Outer Rim during the events of The Last Jedi.
Their failure to respond to Leia's call to action was either because they were still busy talking, that they witnessed the utter curbstomp of the Resistance forces on Crait and were too scared to do anything, or both. The next DLC season will see the "new" Inferno Squad rallying support for the Resistance after Luke's climactic appearance on the battlefront (lol) inspired the galaxy toward rebellion.
