Recap / The Interns S 1 E 2

Go To

Bykov is already fed up with his new interns and their stupidity. Kupitman offers to "borrow" one of them for a day: he is bored, while Bykov would have one less dumbass to bother him. Bykov "gives" him Lobanov, who doesn't want to do anything at all anyway. Kupitman gives Semyon a simple task: examining the patients and diagnose them. Lobanov examines a patient with chickenpox without gloves, and Kupitman, to teach him a lesson, tells him that he is now infected with a deadly disease; the only cure is a rectal suppository (which Kupitman secretly stuffed with red pepper), and there's only one dose. Prank goes out of control when Lobanov decides to "save" his patient instead of himself.

Levin demands a "real" task, to show that he's above the other interns. Bykov decides to test his skills by giving him various hypothetical scenarios with various patients to resolve, only for Levin to screw them up each and every time. When he botches even helping Bykov who chocked on food, he gets sent to a morgue, to do paper work: it's the only place where his incompetence would hurt no one.

Gleb comes from a night club, still suffering from hangover, just shortly before Bykov. He and Varya are assigned to work together... except Gleb plans to just lie and do nothing, leaving all the work to Varya. Varya disagrees, and injects him with caffeine, insuring that he can't possibly fall asleep any time soon. He, in turn, injects her with sedatives. Fearing that Bykov would see her, he hides her on a gurney, covered by a blanket. Bykov sends Gleb to finally do his task, while orderlies moves Varya to the morgue — where she wakes up, scaring Levin off. Gleb recovers Varya in time before Bykov finds her, and does all the work by himself; while Levin, for his stupidity, gets punished with a night shift.

This episode provide examples of:

  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: In beginning of the episode, Levin lists all the possible diseases matching his patient's symptoms. When he finishes the list with simple poisoning, the patient finally faints.
  • Conversation Cut: At the start of the episode, Kupitman and Bykov are discussing Bykov's interns. While Kupitman thinks that they are not that bad, Bykov insist that they are complete morons. The camera cuts to interns and their screwups, though given that it's Bykov who narrates the scenes, and the scenes' absurdity, it may or may not be an exaggeration.
  • Cool and Unusual Punishment: Lobanov examines his patient (who suffers from chickenpox) without gloves, so Kupitman decides to teach him a lesson. How? By convincing him that he has a "dreadfully deadly disease", from which the only one "cure" exist... a rectal suppository (secretly stuffed with red pepper). Unfortunately, instead of taking it himself, Lobanov remembers about his patient and decides to "save" him.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Gleb didn't count on the sedative he used on Varya being just that strong, so instead of making her sleepy, it put her to sleep for two hours. With her fainting right in the main hall.
  • Epic Fail: Varya somehow manages to drop syringe in such a way that it drops vertically and gets stuck in patient's buttock.
  • Explain, Explain... Oh, Crap!: When Levin asks Bykov for help with "undead" in the morgue, Bykov suggests that since the "zombie" is clearly not here anymore, it seems that it had escaped. Now, Levin must guard the morgue until morning, while Bykov would search the hospital for escaped zombie. Levin correctly recognises that it was sarcasm, and that he is punished with a night shift.
  • Failed a Spot Check: Bykov was eating a sandwich, then he started chocking. Levin somehow failed to see it, and interpreted it as him having a heart attack, and started hitting his chest in attempt to "reanimate" him, which obviously resulted in "are you nuts?" reaction from Bykov, and him being assigned to work in the morgue, where he would hurt no one.
  • Fully Automatic Clip Show: Bykov says that Lobanov "just doesn't care". Cue montage of the scenes of Lobanov not caring about Lyuba's requests (do his work, clean his coat, etc), with him telling how he doesn't care in over-the-top manner.
  • Gave Up Too Soon: According to Kupitman, Lobanov, when reading medical encyclopaedia, was three pages away from chickenpox (which was what the patient was sick with), before falling asleep.
  • Gone Horribly Wrong: Kupitman's prank was intended to punish Semyon for disregarding safety regulations. Instead, it results in an innocent patient being injected with rectal suppository stuffed with red pepper (which he passes as the "cure" for a "dreadful deadly disease"), as Semyon decides that it's his duty to "save" the patient over himself.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Played With. While Lobanov's intentions are noble, the whole "dreadful deadly disease" story was created to teach him a lesson, and the "cure" is actually a rectal suppository, stuffed with red pepper. So, by injecting the patient with this "cure", he creates a problem where there was none.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Gleb's attempt to sedate Varya (something he does in retaliation to her stuffing him with caffeine, itself reaction to his attempt to slack) results in Varya being put out of condition for several hours, forcing Gleb to do all the work by alone.
  • I'm a Doctor, Not a Placeholder: Levin asks Bykov to give him more important task, as he's not a nurse (clearly meaning that such work is beneath him); he doesn't care at all that Lyuba (head nurse) is nearby and can hear him. Bykov immediately puts him on his place by saying that yes, he's not a nurse: he's yet to grow up to that. He then tests Levin by giving him hypothetical crisis situations, which Levin fails utterly due to panicking and failing to respond in time.
  • Induced Hypochondria: When Lobanov examines a patient with chickenpox without gloves, Kupitman, to teach him a lesson, tells him that he now has some deadly disease with unpronounceable name. The only "cure" is a rectal suppository, stuffed with red pepper. Unfortunately, Lobanov decides to "sacrifice" himself and "cure" the patient instead.
Bykov: Wow, where he got that dreadful fake disease?
  • The Insomniac: Gleb loses his ability to sleep after Varya injects him with caffeine when he uses his sleepiness as excuse for slacking off. Angry at Varya (he planned to sleep after spending a whole night at the club), Gleb decides to retaliate, and injects Varya with sedatives. It only makes his situation worse, as now he has to do all the job while hiding Varya from Bykov.
  • Instantly Proven Wrong: When Varya injects him with caffeine, to make him able to do his work, Gleb says that it's not gonna work: he spent entire night sleepless, and no amount of caffeine would make him stay awake, even if she gives him a full bucket of it. Then his heartbeat speeds up, and he realises that nope, he's not gonna fall asleep anytime soon.
  • Instant Sedation: Doubly Subverted. While Gleb actually expected that he gave Varya weak enough sedatives so they would merely make her sleepy, the instant she hears what exactly he gave her, she faints for two hours, right in the main hall, which nearly gets Gleb busted by Bykov.
  • I Resemble That Remark!: Kupitman suggests Bykov to try occasionally not insult people around him. Bykov immediately tells him that he's looking like drunkard granny.
  • Jerkass: Gleb spends entirety of the episode acting like a jerk.
    • His first scene (which is a part of Bykov's narration) is to send disabled patient to buy him cigarettes, while he would sit there.
    • Gleb just came from a night club. When pointed that he can't work with patients in such a state, he says that he wouldn't: while the rest of interns would work, he would sleep.
    • When Varya, displeased with prospect of doing all the work while Gleb would sleep, injects him with caffeine, Gleb decides to "strike back" and injects her with sedatives. It backfires on him.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Jerk:
    • Kupitman offers Bykov his help, to reduce pressure new interns put on him by taking one of them. When asked, he confirms that real reason is just him being bored and wanting some "toys" to play with.
    • Gleb suddenly volunteered to help Varya with a patient? Nope, he just wants a place to sleep, while Varya would do all the work by alone. Varya is not amused, and injects him with caffeine so he wouldn't be able to slack off.
Varya: Romanenko? Are you really going to sleep? But you promised yourself that you're gonna help me!
Gleb: Nope, I promised that to Bykov. But to you, I'm gonna tell the truth: I deceived Bykov.
  • Kick the Dog: In the Conversation Cut at the beginning of the episode, Romanenko asks his patient to buy him cigarettes. We immediately learn that patient is disabled, but Gleb doesn't see anything wrong with sending him with errand. Though it's impossible to say whether it's real event, or Bykov made it up.
  • The Klutz: In the beginning of the episode, Varya can't even make a simple injection right, somehow managing to drop the syringe in the way that it falls and gets stuck (vertically) in the patient's buttock (without patient noticing).
  • Mistaken for Undead: When Varya awakens in the morgue, she scares Levin so much, he immediately runs away. He later tries to ask Bykov for help, still thinking that it was a zombie, and only realises his mistake when Bykov sarcastically supports him and leaves him on "important task" of guarding the morgue.
  • Moving the Goalposts: Just when Levin (on a second try) trains to perform first aid during heart attack, Bykov gives him entirely different task, which Levin fails again due to not remembering required technique in time. When Levin tries to say that it's "not fair", Bykov points that real emergencies wouldn't care whether he's ready or not: academic knowledge worth nothing if you fail to save the patient.
    Levin: It's not fair!
Bykov: Blame not me, but him; why he's not sick with something that you know?
  • Overly Long Scream: When Varya realises that she's at morgue, she starts screaming, and only shuts up when Gleb shows up later and shakes her out of it.
  • Pain to the Ass: Kupitman's prank involves convincing Lobanov that he has a dreadful disease, and give him the pepper-stuffed suppository as "the cure". Instead of taking it himself, Semyon tries to "save" his patient, which leads to the patient rushing to Kupitman and begging for help... with his ass.
Patient: Doctor, help! My ass is on fire!
  • Scary Science Words: Kupitman intentionally names the fake illness he "diagnoses" Lobanov with (Schliemann's Systemic Vasculoid Ichthyosis) in such a way that it would sound threatening yet would be too hard to pronounce or memorise for someone like Semyon, so the plan wouldn't be revealed too quickly.
  • Screaming at Squick: Varya's reaction when she awakes at the hospital's morgue is to start screaming on top of her lungs in panic.
  • Ship Tease: At the end of the episode, sleeping Varya puts her head on Gleb's shoulder, hinting at possible romance between the two.
  • The Slacker:
    • Lobanov just seats here and drinks beer. No, Lyuba, he doesn't care!
    • Romanenko just returns from a night club. When Varya asks how he would treat patients in such state, he says that he wouldn't: the rest of interns would do that, while he would sleep. When Gleb volunteers to get paired with her, only to continue sleeping, Varya, not willing to do all the work by alone, injects him with caffeine, making him unable to sleep until it wears off.

  • That Came Out Wrong:
    • Kupitman offers Bykov his help. Bykov points out that offers like this sounds creepy when coming from a venereologist.
    • Comments about shaving groin always comes out at the worst moments.
    • Levin's attempt to explain what has happened in the morgue sounds like he's talking about his boner. Bykov just says that "it happens sometimes".
  • Too Dumb to Live: While Semyon is lucky that his patient actually has a mere chickenpox, him not bothering with wearing gloves when examining a patient (especially a patient who's suspected to have infectious disease) is not only a serious safety violation, but also a major risk of being infected himself, which, in other circumstances, could've been actually dangerous. Kupitman tries to show him just how really bad such mistake can be... which accidentally backfires due to unexpected outburst of "heroism" from Lobanov.
  • TV Genius: Bykov decides to test Levin and his ability to act in emergency situations, when Levin has no time to react; Levin performs less than stellar:
    • When Bykov asks Levin about required treatment for one of the patients, he answers correctly. Then Bykov gives him another task and limits his time to respond. Levin panics, and fails miserably.
    • When Bykov leaves, Levin trains to do the actions which Bykov requested on the failed test quickly and efficiently... only for Bykov to give Levin a new situation instead. He fails once again.
    • Bykov suddenly chokes on a sandwich, forcing Levin to try and save him... only for Bykov to reveal that he's fine, and that Levin has failed yet again: while he reacted in time, he botched the technique, and started beating him in attempts to "reanimate" him (mistakenly believing that it's a heart attack). Bykov sends him to the morgue to do paper work, since there he wouldn't hurt anyone else.
  • Unreliable Expositor: Bykov tells the stories about his interns' screwups, which are so absurd that it's hard to tell whether they're real, or he made them up.
  • The Virus: Lobanov's patient suffers from chickenpox (which Semyon doesn't know), and Lobanov examines him without protection gloves, in blatant violation of the safety rules. To teach him a lesson, Kupitman fakes pox marks on his face and says him that he's now infected with a dreadful (but, fortunately, fictional) disease. The only cure is a rectal suppository (which Kupitman secretly stuffed with red pepper); and he has only one dose, specifically for Lobanov. Unfortunately, Lobanov decides to "sacrifice" himself, and use it on the patient.
  • Waking Up at the Morgue: After being injected with sedatives, Varya gets transported into a morgue, and awakes just in time to scare off Levin, who's working here. Then she notices where she is, and starts screaming.
