While trying to catch up to the Legends, Astra and Spooner have a disagreement, which causes Gideon to shut down. In order to wake her back up, Astra casts a spell that takes both of them inside Gideon's head, allowing them to relive moments from previous seasons.

Tropes:

  • Battle in the Center of the Mind: Astra and Spooner travel inside Gideon's mind to combat the virus that's threatening to give her permanent amnesia.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: The 2213 Bishop seems to be much more similar to his future counterpart than everyone (including himself) thought when it's revealed that he made a copy of Gideon's operating system during the events of the Season 6 finale right under the Legends' noses.
  • Bottle Episode: The vast majority of the episode takes place on the Waverider, with most of the other scenes taking place in Bishop's lab.
  • Brick Joke: After pondering whether it is correct or not to steal a pie causes her to shut down, in the end Gideon herself suggests getting some piece, as she feels hungry.
  • The Bus Came Back: The episode features the return of former Legends and series regulars Ray Palmer, Martin Stein, Jefferson Jackson, Rip Hunter, Nora Darhk, Leonard Snart, and Carter Hall, as well as the previous season's villain, Bishop.
  • Call-Back:
    • The opening title sequence features every variation of the show's logo used yet.
    • Gideon's mechanic inside her memory is Jax, who was in charge of repairing the Waverider during his time on the show.
    • Gideon makes note of how often the gang travels back to the Western era.
    • Gideon, Sara, and Ava singing "Love Will Keep Us Together" is a callback to the pilot.
    • Stein is seen singing "Good morning!". Gideon assists him.
  • Call-Forward:
    • In one of Gideon's memories of the Season 1-era Legends, Sara sardonically wonders "who would want to be the Captain of this team".
    • In another of Gideon's memories, Gary relishes the idea of eating a human, much to the disgust of the other Legends, before he covers it up by claiming he's talking about gingerbread men. This scene is of course set before the Legends learn that Gary is in fact an alien who can eat humans.
    • When Rip tells the Legends about the Waverider having only one bathroom, Ray's the one who takes it the lightest, and even suggests a sign-up sheet. Snart winds up freezing the paper out of his hands, which is not too different from what Snart's partner had done in Season 5.
  • Celebrity Paradox: Spooner mentions Christopher Nolan, which makes one wonder what Nolan's filmography looks like in a world where Batman is a real person.
  • Clip Show: When human Gideon takes control of her ship form, she flies through various brief clips from past seasons.
  • Chuck Cunningham Syndrome: An enforced case due to actor availability. The season 1 era flashbacks place more focus on Carter, who died in the second episode, over his more prominent Distaff Counterpart Kendra. The closest to a mention she receives is a mention of Carter having a son who was killed.
  • Continuity Nod: All over the place.
    • Bishop has flashbacks to last season's finale, which was suppressed in his memory by the Legends.
    • The first of Gideon's memories shown is right after the Legends snag Spooner, where Ava shows her The Power of Love.
    • The next memory is from Season 1, showing a much harsher Sara and the team practically at each other's throats over breakfast, of all things.
    • After that, they flash back to Stein giddy over finding out he has a grandchild.
    • Gideon remembers that Ray replaced all the alcohol on the ship with kombucha, which means Astra can't get drunk.
    • When they travel through Gideon's memories, they see clips from well over a dozen different episodes.
    • Evil!Gideon shows Gideon flashbacks of every single time a Legends member has died, whether permanent or temporary.
    • Once again, it's pointed out (and explained) that the Waverider has only one comfort room. It's revealed that when the Legends found out about it for the first time, they were all furious.
    • Beebo once more makes an appearance.
  • The Corrupter: Evil!Gideon tries to sway Gideon to her side by making her experience all the pain the team went through throughout the years, arguing that being human is nothing desirable. While she initially rejects it, she almost gives in after she sees how Rip changed her.
  • Create Your Own Villain: Bishop from the past becomes evil after regaining his memories and becoming furious at the Legends for tampering with his mind.
  • Death of Personality:
    • This is basically what "evil" Gideon is trying to do, by erasing Gideon's memories of the Legends and all the Character Development they caused in her.
    • Bishop performs a factory reset of his copy of Gideon.
  • Evil Twin:
    • The Monster of the Week is an evil Gideon attempting to erase Gideon's memories, with Astra and Spooner along with them. The Reveal suggests that this is Gideon's original programming, which objected to the Legends as against her edict to protect history, reasserting itself.
    • By the end of the episode, Bishop's copy of Gideon becomes this when he restores her to factory settings, with the intention of using her as a weapon against the Legends.
  • Fake Shemp: During a flashback to Season 1, the camera briefly pans down to Mick, played by someone else, who is passed out drunk and with his back to the camera.
  • Family of Choice: Gideon notes that, as dysfunctional as the Legends get, they're still her family.
  • Flanderization: While the original Legends did have a Ragtag Bunch of Misfits and Teeth-Clenched Teamwork dynamic going on, it wasn't as bad as this episode suggests, with them constantly trying to kill each other.
    • This could be justified as the corrupted Other Gideon deliberately exaggerating the team's flaws to convince Gideon to go along with her plan.
  • Gone Horribly Right: The Legends only mindwiped the "good" circa-2213 Bishop so he will still become a Mad Scientist supervillain and preserve the timeline. Unfortunately, this same Bishop has a Faceā€“Heel Turn sooner because he recovered his memories, was furious at the Legends for the wipe, and becomes vengeful as a result.
  • Lampshade Hanging:
    • Astra mocks Sara's White Canary outfit, which, after Season 1, she only ever wore during crossovers.
    • She also notes how Gideon seems to really like British accents.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: Gideon mentions always wanting to go on an adventure with the Legends, specifically one of the Westerns.
  • Logic Bomb: Gideon suffers one because of an argument over whether to steal a pie, which shuts her down.
  • Mission Control: Jax guides Spooner, Astra and Gideon through the latter's memories.
  • Meet Your Early-Installment Weirdness: Spooner and Astra, the two newest members of the Legends, get to observe the original lineup of the Legends through Gideon's memories. In particular, Spooner notes how different Sara was during the Season 1 era.
  • Misplaced Accent: Gideon's mental image of Jax has an inexplicable British accent.
  • Oh, Crap!: Astra and Spooner when the Legends' memories suddenly turns against them (when they should be "invisible"), because of the evil Gideon.
  • The Reveal:
    • Gideon's attachment to the Legends and her ability to grow and evolve are actually just things Rip Hunter programmed into her to facilitate his mission. Against her will.
    • On a lighthearted note, Gideon reporting to the Legends book club that Constantine bought tickets to a midnight premiere of Harry Potter.
  • Shout-Out: When Astra and Spooner find out they have to dive inside Gideon's mind while already inside Gideon's mind, Spooner quickly ushers out the obligatory Christopher Nolan reference.
  • Special Edition Title: All seven seasons' intros are shown.
  • Split-Personality Merge: At the end of the episode, Gideon merges with "evil" Gideon rather than deleting her, recognising that "evil" Gideon is a part of herself as well.
  • What Measure Is a Non-Human?: Astra has a problem thinking of Gideon as human now, which is partially the cause of her mental crisis. Gideon herself has to answer this question when her evil self starts going wild. She decides against killing her evil half, in the end.
  • You Are Not Alone: All the Legends give Gideon an inspiring speech in the end, encouraging her in her newfound humanity.
