Provides Examples Of:

  • Aerith and Bob: The characters have names like Ever, Haven, Honor etc., while mystical places have names like Summerland and Shadowland that sound more like names for theme parks.
  • Alpha Bitch:
    • Stacia — the self-appointed bane of Ever's high school existence, because Ever has the audacity of being a loner who wears hoodies and sits in the back of the class.
    • Stacia's role as the Alpha Bitch gets taken over by Haven in Night Star. Ever offers to help her get it back, but only if she agrees to start being nicer.
  • Anti-Climax: In Evermore, Drina is about to kill Ever, but then she just drops down dead. Why? Because she had no love in her heart.
  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: When Ever talks about Haven's life she mentions that her father's trips aren't for "business", her mother's personal trainer is very personal, and that her brother broke her Evanescence CD.
  • Can't Have Sex, Ever: Zigzagged. During the previous centuries, Ever managed to die a virgin every time, for no particular reason. So Damen doesn't want to hasten anything. Later, they are forbidden to touch.
  • Carrying the Antidote: Roman, and eventually Haven after his death carry the antidote to the antidote that makes Ever and Damen unable to touch.
  • Cursed with Awesome: Rather than try to control or find practical uses for her psychic abilities, Ever chooses to gripe about them and find short-term solutions for blocking them out. It's later subverted; she does gain control and stops seeing her powers as a curse.
  • Drowning My Sorrows: Upon discovering that alcohol mutes her psychic powers she becomes a binge drinker and nearly gets expelled from school for it
  • Expy: Ever is special, can read minds, falls with a guy because he's hot, lost her parents and has a scar in her forehead.
  • If Jesus, Then Aliens: Ever's reaction when she learns about immortals. Damen favors Arbitrary Skepticism.
  • Hell: The Shadowland for immortals, but it also exists as a place to learn from your mistakes and earn a second chance]].
  • Lonely Rich Kid: After being orphaned, Ever moves in with her extremely successful, often-absent young aunt and has essentially a suite filled with all the luxuries and brand-names a teenager could dream to own. Although Ever acknowledges that this is the kind of room she would have loved owning before her family died, it now seems like a hollow consolation prize.
  • One-Word Title: Three of the six book titles are this, also counting as Portmantitles because they're compound words:
    • Evermore
    • Shadowlands, also an example of The Place.
    • Everlasting
  • Online Alias: The person Miles dates online in Evermore goes by hornyyoungdingdong307.
  • Reincarnation Romance: for Ever. Damen is rather in the Mayfly–December Romance situation.
  • Selective Obliviousness: Ever has a nasty habit of not reading the writing on the wall. The best example is, upon first meeting Damen, Ever realizes that he is immune to all the psychic abilities she possesses that generally drive her nuts. She even states that the only time her telepathy/aura reading/psychometry doesn't work on someone is if they're dead. Rather than find this curious or concerning, Ever chooses to fixate on the fact Damen seems to be flirting with resident Alpha Bitch, Stacia. This is stated to be Ever's Achilles' Heel and ultimately results in her death, by virtue of being struck in the chakra associated with this weakness. Don't worry, she recovers.
  • Shadowland: The Shadowland to Summerland.
  • Who Names Their Kid "Dude"?: The protagonist's name is Ever Bloom, her best friend is named Haven and one of the girls bullying her is named Honor.
  • Your Mind Makes It Real: This is how Summerland works. Damen explains to Ever that the mortal world also works this way, but it takes longer.
