Sometimes, a joke can spiral into something that ruins your life.

And sometimes, it spirals into the best thing ever.

Our Mrs Monkey by AndrewJTalon is a One Piece fanfic in which Nami and Luffy get married after he defeats Arlong.

Tropes...

  • Accidental Marriage: Usopp forges marriage documents for Luffy and Nami when the crew arrives in Loguetown. However, those documents are intercepted by the Marines and Garp finds out about them. Garp immediately orders the documents to be properly processed and as a result, legally, Luffy and Nami are married in the eyes of the law.
  • Accidental Proposal: The first chapter of the fic shows Nami accidentally blurting out "Marry Me" to Luffy and Luffy deciding to accept. Nami tries to explain it was an accident but everyone in Cocoyashi got caught in the moment and try to marry the two on the spot. Nami manages to explain the situation before crunch time. That gets undone when Usopp forges marriage documents for them to land in Loguetown.
  • Adaptational Badass: Nami has Conqueror's Haki.
  • Adaptational Relationship Overhaul:
    • Luffy and Nami were merely close friends in canon. Here, they marry and are deeply in love.
    • Zoro marries Perona during the time skip, their relationship includes a lot of bickering, but both are clearly happy with each other.
    • Sabo is married to Koala.
    • Coby, Tashigi, Hibari and Kujaku all decide to be in a relationship together to test the waters.
  • Adaptation Distillation: The story skims over a lot of canon. They still happen, but largely in the background so that the story can focus on the changes that happen due to Luffy and Nami being legally married.
  • Anger Born of Worry:
    • After Luffy wakes up from his battle with Crocodile, Nami (who was laying beside him) alternates between kissing him, happy that he's alive, and punching him for getting so close to dying.
    • Bartolemeo discusses this with Acenath when they talk about how her parents will feel about her running off.
    • Nami understandably gets angry when Ace nearly drowns after breaking the rule about not playing near the railings.
  • Breaking the Cycle of Bad Parenting: Luffy doesn't really resent his father at all, but his first reaction to learning about his daughter, after intense euphoria, is shame that he wasn't there to see her birth and fear that he abandoned her like his own father. Unlike Dragon, Luffy is a very present and loving father.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Nami and Boa Hancock get into a verbal fight over the other's affections for Luffy.
  • Compliment Backfire: Diamante's praise of Bellamy winning his block falls flat because he accidentally revealed he had no faith that Bellamy could pull it off.
  • Crazy Jealous Guy: Sanji is extremely envious of Luffy for being with Nami, with one incident post-timeskip where he almost attacks him for kissing her even though he knows they are married.
  • Dead Guy Junior: Nami names her and Luffy's daughter Acenath, after her deceased uncle.
  • Disappeared Dad: Luffy feels like he's this for not being there when Acenath was born. Nami is quick to reassure him that's not the case.
  • Distinction Without a Difference: Subverted. Luffy starts clarifying that he didn't extort Morgans, only to realize that what he did was the definition of extortion.
  • Exact Words: When Garp calls Fujitora to ask if he saw his great-granddaughter yet, there is a pause before the blind Fujitora, who just met her, answers no to troll him.
  • The Gadfly: Mihawk marries Zoro and Perona to each other as a condition of letting them stay at his place. He says it is to prevent out-of-wedlock relations, but really, he was bored and wanted entertainment.
  • Hidden Depths: Mihawk turns out to be an ordained priest and has the legal authority to marry two people in matrimony. He's also a serial shipper with a String Theory board filled with potential ships.
  • Instant Seduction: Luffy revealing that he extorted Big News Morgans for 500 million in gold causes Nami to have sex with him on the spot.
  • I Want Grandkids: Moria is supportive of Perona's desire to be knocked up by her husband Zoro because he wants grandkids out of his surrogate daughter.
  • I Want Them Alive!: Acenath's bounty poster specifies the marines want her alive.
  • Love-Obstructing Parents: Moria is initially outraged over Zoro marrying his surrogate daughter Perona before switching gears to wanting grandkids.
  • Making Love in All the Wrong Places: Following their marriage ceremony, Luffy and Nami have sex all over their ship. Most of their crew mates are not amused.
  • Missing Steps Plan: Upon questioning, Luffy admits to Rebecca that he didn't consider what he'd do with the Flame-Flame Fruit should he succeed in claiming it.
  • Papa Wolf: Caesar threatening his daughter results in Luffy revealing Gear Fourth early and unleashing a brutal beat down on him.
  • Price on Their Head: Acenath gets her first bounty after Fishman Island. It is 50 million berries. It also beats out Charlotte Linlin as the having the youngest bounty at two-years-old
  • Real-Person Fic: In-Universe. There are a lot of romance novels based on Luffy and Nami.
  • Red Baron: Acenath's epithet is Strawhat Princess.
  • Shipper on Deck: Mihawk is a shipper in general. He does this to pass the time because he has way too much of it.
  • Sneeze Cut:
    • When Luffy says his daughter doesn't need to start as a cabin girl like Coby was a cabin boy, the scene changes to Coby sneezing.
    • When Helmeppo wonders if anyone understands his envy of other men getting all the chicks, the scene changes to Sanji sneezing.
    • When Nami says Sanji better not be chasing skirts while in Dressrosa, the scene changes to Sanji sneezing before he continues chasing Viola's skirt.
  • That Came Out Wrong: When Gambia tells Luffy that he and Bartolomeo found Acenath, who ran off the Sunny to see Dressrosa's living toys, his exact wording sounds like the lead-in to a I Have Your Wife type threat.
  • Touché: When Sanji is upset that Zoro isn't showing crew loyalty by claiming Perona's cooking is better than his, Zoro asks what he'd do if he were to compare Tashigi's swordsmanship with his. Sanji concedes the point.
  • Would Rather Suffer: Coby and Helmeppo would prefer doing punishment duty or other dirty jobs in order to not listen to Garp regale stories of his wedding night.
  • Yandere: Uta is obsessed with her childhood friend Luffy and thinks her songs would make her own dreams come true by making Luffy marry her and give her a lot of kids. She thinks she will eventually make him see the error of his ways in marrying Nami.
  • You Are the New Trend: Following Luffy's and Nami's wedding ceremony, there is an uptick in marriages among pirates outside of Big Mom's crew. By the end of the time skip, Big Mom and her crew are no longer outliers distorting the marriage statistics.
