Xyz Dimension

The Resistance

The remaining Xyz duelists who haven't been captured by Academia; are the last remnants of a world that's gone to hell due to dimensional invaders. The Xyz dimension was originally a peaceful place to live in before they were attacked without warning. After repelling against most of the Obelisk Forces, duelists of the Resistance were able to procure the same technology as their enemies and can now inflict real damage on their opponents and seal them away into cards.

    Shun Kurosaki

Shun Kurosaki

Archetype: Raidraptor

Shun Kurosaki, along with Yuto, is one of the survivors of the invasion on the Xyz Dimension, as well as a member of the Resistance. Originally a kind, if a somewhat stoic person, the invasion took its toll on his psyche. What makes this worse is learning that the true reasons why his home was destroyed and his younger sister Ruri, being planned as a "sacrifice" along with his best friend Yuto, being intended to get killed off by The Professor. He later joins up with Ray as her "knight" to ensure the safety of his loved ones and to make Academia pay for their transgressions.

Shun uses a Raidraptor deck, which is made for swarming Winged-Beast-Type monsters to Xyz Summon monsters with low base-ATK, but powerful effects. He also has many Spell and Trap Cards that can counter various situations and exploits his Rank Up spells to evolve his Raidraptors into more powerful forms.

  • Adaptational Angst Upgrade: In the anime, Ruri being captured by Yuri causes Shun to really start losing it, and soon became a He Who Fights Monsters Anti-Hero. When being enlightened by the Awful Truth of the Dimensional War along with the fact that his sister and best friend are to be sacrificed and killed respectively, his thirst for vengeance and hatred goes past the point of no return.
  • Adaptational Nice Guy: Compare to his canon counterpart, who's already a Jerkass He Who Fights Monsters Anti-Hero at the start of the story, Shun's relatively "nicer" here due to Ruri never having to be kidnapped by Yuri. Furthermore, his Big Brother Bully and Control Freak tendencies of his sister are relatively toned down here.
  • Adaptational Sexuality: According to Word of God, Shun is homosexual in the fic, having an attraction for Yuto.
  • Adaptational Villainy: At the beginning of the canon anime, he was already a Good Is Not Nice Anti-Hero skirting onto the edges of a Nominal Hero. Here, he fully becomes an Anti-Villain since he's helping Ray to ensure the safety of his sister and best friend.
  • Anti-Villain: After chapter 13, he falls into this role since, despite helping the revival of Ray and Zarc, his goals firmly lie in protecting his sister and best friend, helping the ones they care about and rebuilding their home after it was laid waste by the Academia Forces.
  • Badass Longcoat: He wears a long blue-purple coat and looks tough with it.
  • Big Brother Instinct:
    • Ruri may not have been blood-related, it doesn't stop him from being a very doting brother if a little overprotective. So much as he's willing to make a pact with Ray to revive her and Zarc as long as she ensures that Ruri will be still alive in the end.
    • He also extends this to Yuto and included his safety as well in his pact with Ray.
  • Chess Motif: The Knight, as he serves as Ray's agent in chapter 13.
  • Cybernetics Eat Your Soul: Metaphorically; his Raidraptors monsters resemble robotic avian predators, which symbolizes his desire to protect his sister and Pay Evil unto Evil on his foes. However, his devotion to his sister is what Ray recognizes as a good trait.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Played with. Despite his dark attire and joining up with Ray to revive her and Zarc, Shun cares more about protecting his loved ones and hurting those who try to harm them.
  • Death from Above: A recurring motif of his Raidraptors, with Revolution Falcon burying the Obelisk Forces under a hail of bombs in his nightmare.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Despite being willing to commit morally unconscious acts in order to protect his sister, best friend, and homeland, Shun is quite disgusted by learning how petty Leo's motives are in order to revive his daughter.
    • He's also horrified to see his sister physically assaulting Obelisk Force members, although this is more so because of how uncharacteristic it is for her to be doing so than out of any sympathy for her victims.
    • Although he swiftly demolishes Masumi in their duel, he feels no satisfaction from such a brutal victory, since she wasn't a threat towards him.
  • Expy: Can be seen as one to Rishid/Odion from the original series. Both are The Dragon to their respective Big Bads and are the adopted brothers of them (or in Shun's case, a part of them). Neither of them is particularly evil on their own, but their Undying Loyalty to their family drives them to do terrible things.
  • Fantastic Racism: Considering what the Obelisk Forces had done to his home, he hates Fusion Summoning. Although this is rather downplayed thanks to Ray and his sister, focusing his hatred on Academia rather than fusion users in general.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: With Yuto, as the two are best friends from thick to thin. Subverted as the "heterosexual" part doesn't apply to them anymore, as Word of God states that both Shun and Yuto are homosexual and bisexual respectively.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: Is in love with Yuto, but refuses to act on his feelings due to his relationship with his sister Ruri. Subverted in Chapter 21, where Ruri is more than willing to share.
  • Instant Expert: It didn't take him long to master his newfound powers bestowed by Ray and Zarc.
  • Karmic Jackpot: A villainous example. His love for Ruri is recognized by Ray, who's very happy that her counterpart had such a loving family member and would do anything to protect her and their friends. This leads to him being gifted by both Ray and Zarc with his own powers and gaining new cards as well.
  • Knight Templar Big Brother: He will do anything to make sure that Ruri is alright, and he extends to Yuto to a lesser extent. It's also what causes him to ally himself with Ray and Zarc in the first place.
  • Magic Knight: A pretty good duelist in a world where duel monsters can be implemented with real magic and is a skilled hand-to-hand fighter capable of taking down several enemies at once. This is much more apparent with Ray and Zarc empowering him with his new cards.
  • My Master, Right or Wrong: Well, his sister, but he outright tells Ray that he'll do anything to protect Ruri.
  • Love Makes You Crazy: His love for his sister Ruri makes him very erratic in his willingness to protect her, which Ray finds endearing.
  • Love Makes You Evil: He later joins up with Ray into reviving her and Zarc to protect Ruri. To a lesser extent, this also applies to his feelings for Yuto.
  • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: It's what he intends to do to The Professor, as his brief fantasy shows, it involves grabbing the man by the throat and bashing his skull against his own throne repeatedly. And unlike canon, it's probably going to happen compared to his almost punch at the man.
  • Not So Stoic: He drops his stoicism whenever Ruri or his allies' lives are at stake.
  • Power Loss Depression: Inverted. As he gains power by accepting the two cards gifted to him by Ray and Zarc, he becomes much more lively.
  • Punch-Clock Villain: All he wants is to protect his home and what little family he has left. If it means working to resurrect two gods who waged war on humanity, then so be it.
  • Straight Gay: His personality is not much different from canon, besides being much nicer and hopeful, and he holds romantic feelings for his best friend.
  • The Stoic: He becomes very cynical and emotionless after Academia invaded his home.
  • Took a Level in Badass: In chapter 13, he gains powers like his sister and best friend, and his deck gains two more cards from Ray and Zarc respectively.
  • Took a Level in Cheerfulness: He became very depressed and stoic after Academia destroyed his home, but after accepting two cards gifted to him by Ray he becomes more lively.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: His first scene is him and Yuto having an argument about whether or not it would be wise to attack an Academy Base, with the implication being that this is a common occurrence. Nonetheless, Shun cares for him just as much as he does Ruri, and ensuring his protection is half of the reason he joins Ray and Zarc.
  • You Are Worth Hell: "The only truth I know is that Ruri is my sister, my family. Nothing will change that, nothing could make her any less important to me."

    Kaito Tenjo

Kaito Tenjo

Archetype: Cipher/Galaxy-Eyes

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tenjoukaitofull3155057.jpg

An alternate counterpart to Kaito Tenjou from Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL. Prior to the invasion of Heartland, he was a Pro Duelist who was on track to be Heartland's next Duel Champion and having fun doing it. Nowadays, he is consumed with wrath and has a deep hatred towards Academia, and is kind of paranoid towards strangers.

He wields the "Cipher" archetype, a deck that revolves around having multiples of cards with the same name on the field, even if he has to manipulate them to fulfill his requirements. His ace monster is Galaxy-Eyes Cipher Dragon.

  • Adaptational Heroism: Justified since the Resistance is going strong compare to them nearly wipe out in canon, along with Haruto not carded.
  • Adaptational Nice Guy: He's far kinder and reasonable than his canon counterpart, who's reduced to a He Who Fights Monsters Knight Templar after losing his family and most of his comrades.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Like in the anime, he lacks the "Photon Change" from ZEXAL, meaning that his trench coat is permanently black, but is not evil and focuses on saving his hometown.
  • Light Is Good: His Cipher monsters and Galaxy-Eyes Cipher Dragon are LIGHT Attributes, and he's part of the Resistance.
  • Older Than They Look: He's 18, a year older than Kurosaki, but he looks much younger and shorter.
