Princess Taira Chiyo
- Big Eater: Mostly in the beginning of the manga. She even ate an ippondatara (giant boar-like creature).
- Blood from the Mouth: Coughing blood is one of the signs of her curse. Sometimes, there is so much blood that it's weird why she doesn't die from blood lose.
- Cheerful Child
- Early Installment Character-Design Difference: Some details of her design are present only in first chapters:
- Heroic BSoD: She suffers one after the demons destroy Rokuhara for violating the contract and its remaining residents blame her about it.
- Hollywood Costuming: She wears modern-looking clothes, despite the manga being set in Medieval Japan.
- Human Sacrifice: Her clan made a contract with demons to get power to defeat Minamoto clan, and in exchange she has to die at the age of 16.
- Immortality Seeker: She is cursed to die about a year after the manga begins, so she is trying to find a way to become immortal.
- Made of Iron: She seemed not to take any sufficient damage after falling from a giant cliff and even survived after falling from the height of the clouds.
- My God, What Have I Done?: When she violates the contract, going to Yomotsu Hirasaka in attempt to become immortal, instead of dying in Oushu, the demons destroy the capital, Rokuhara Kyo.

The man who promised to protect Chiyo.- Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": Jii is short for "Ojii-san", meaning old man.
- Forced Transformation: After being killed by an ippondatara in the being, he spends most of the time in the form of ghost.
- Super-Strength: He can tear out trees.
Uratarou
- Accidental Pervert: He has no qualms against watching at naked girls or even washing in the same hotspring with them.
- Asleep for Days: He was sleeping for years before Chiyo awakens him in the beginning of the manga.
- Death by Childbirth: He was born from the womb of his already dead mother.
- Death Seeker: He tried many different ways, but still couldn't kill himself. Even being beheaded doesn't kill him.
- Exotic Eye Designs: He has concentric circles in his eyes.
- Foil: To Chiyo, he wants to die as strongly as she wants to live.
- Immortality: He was born as an immortal:
- Eating Optional: He doesn't need to eat and drink.
- Healing Factor: His wounds heal very quickly.
- Immortality Begins at Twenty: He has immortality since his birth and is about 800 years old, yet has young adult-looking body.
- Immortality Hurts: Although immortal, he still can get tired and feel pain (although his pain threshold seems to be very high compared to a normal human).
- Losing Your Head: Even after being beheaded, he is still alive and can control his body.
- Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He's rude and says that the only reasons why he went with Chiyo and Ji were hope to die and curiosity, but near the end of the first part, in Yomotsu Hirasaka he confesses that he does really love Chiyo and wants her to live.
- Mayfly–December Friendship / Mayfly–December Romance: The main reason why he wants to die is watching all of his friends and loved ones die.
- Mundane Utility: He used his own cut off finger as a bait for fishing.
- Only Known by Their Nickname: For most people, he's Kijin-sama.

- She Is Not My Girlfriend: He denies having a crush on Chiyo.
- Super-Strength: He can knock out an about 15-meters tall demon with one stroke.

- Taken for Granite: She is transformed into gold by Hidehira for allowing Chiyo to escape. Although, she later turns back with his death.
Fujiwara Hidehira
- For the Evulz: He wants to destroy Japan for unknown reason.
- Taken for Granite: He can transform people into gold, such as he does to Chiyo's mother.
Inugami Fusemaru
- Our Werewolves Are Different: Just like anyone in his clan, he can transform into a dog.
- Roaring Rampage of Revenge: He wants to massacre the entire Taira clan because they were afraid of his clan, so they burned his entire village, killing his parents and dog.
Minamoto Yoshitsune
Emperor Antoku
- A Child Shall Lead Them: She is only 14 years old, yet already a ruler of Japan.
- Immortality
- Losing Your Head: Uratarou tore off her head. But then it's revealed that she's immortal and it didn't kill her, although it took some time for her to stand again because it was the second or third time when she received a fatal wound.
- She Is the King: She is referred as "Emperor".
Taira Noritsune

- It's All My Fault: When he sees Emperor Antoku's head being tore off by Uratarou, although it's later revealed that it didn't kill her, since she's immortal.
