Main Characters

     Lord John Grey

Lord John Grey

An English lord whom Jamie befriends in Ardsmuir. He develops feelings for Jamie which he tries to keep in check daily. He is very noble and honorable.
  • Badass Bookworm: He is a total badass, and also well-read and educated for a man of his time.
  • Badass in Distress: In Scottish Prisoner he is arrested by authorities in Ireland and imprisoned. Jamie and Tom have to work together to break him out.
  • Celibate Hero: Because of his sexual orientation, he is this most of the time. Though he does have on-and-off affairs with Stephan and a brief relationship with Percy Wainwright.
  • Cultured Warrior: Lord John is a veteran soldier who is also well-read and scholarly.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Is very well known for this.
  • Duel to the Death: Participates in one in Scottish Prisoner, against Twelvetrees. He wins (though he almost does die in the attempt).
  • Fire-Forged Friends: Notably with Jamie Fraser, who he first met at Carryarick and was later a sort of parole officer for while Jamie was a Jacobite prisoner-of-war. Because John is attracted to Jamie, their relationship is very rocky until they work together on a mission in Ireland.
  • Happily Married: To Isobel Dunsay, before her death.
  • I Didn't Mean to Turn You On: Lord John is sexually attracted to Jamie, and though he tries not to show it, it comes out sometimes. Jamie, having been tortured and raped before by a homosexual soldier, does not like it.
  • Incompatible Orientation: Lord John is in love with Jamie to the point that he thinks of the man any time anyone asks him if he ever plans to settle down. However, Jamie is heterosexual and is very traumatized after being raped by the last English officer who took an interest in him, so Lord John's attentions are very unwelcome. In fact, the first few years of their friendship are very rocky as it takes quite a while for Jamie to believe that John won't use his power over Jamie to do anything untoward.
  • I Owe You My Life: John to Jamie, very reluctantly after Jamie spares his life at Carryarick.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: Behaves this way towards Jamie.
  • Mr. Fanservice: Is described as very good-looking.
  • Officer and a Gentleman: Honor is one of Lord John's strongest guiding principles. Even if it is inconvenient, he will strive to do what's right and do it in the politest way possible.
  • Parental Substitute: To William since Geneva is dead and Jamie is unable to claim the boy.
  • Rape As Back Story: Was raped sometime before Culloden when he was in his teens.
  • Straight Gay: Lord John is homosexual, though he has to keep it a secret since homosexuality is outlawed in Britain.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: In Scottish Prisoner, with Jamie when they are completing a crucial mission in Ireland.

The Grey Family

     Gerard Grey
  • He Knows Too Much: Gerard Grey is killed for this.
  • Absence of Evidence: When Hal and John dig into their father's death, they find that the evidence used to accuse him doesn't seem to exist.
  • Did Not Die That Way: Subverted. Publically Gerard's death is a suicide. Benedicta knows its not, as does the then-12-year-old John. John assumes that his then-adult brother knows the truth as well, and finds out 17 years later that Hal had never been told.
    • Unusual example in which suicide was considered preferable to murder.
  • Never Suicide: Gerard Grey's death is thought to be suicide, largely because Benedicta put the gun in his hand after his death, in order to protect Hal and John.

     Benedicta Grey

Benedicta Grey

Mother of Lord John and Hal.

     Sir George Stanley

     Harold Grey

Harold 'Hal' Grey

Brother of Lord John Grey.
  • Cultured Warrior: He is a veteran soldier in the English Army, and also very educated and well-read.
  • Determinator: He refuses to give up his search for Ben, and refuses to believe that Ben is dead even when William discovers what appears to be Ben's grave.
  • Stiff Upper Lip: Deconstructed. Outwardly, Hal epitomizes this trope. He's a military officer who values his role as head and protector of the family. But the reader can see from his narration in "Fugitive Green" and his moments of honesty with John that he's more sensitive than he looks.

     Minerva "Minnie" Grey

Minerva "Minnie" Grey

Hal's wife. She is the daughter of a spymaster.
  • Mysterious Past: Almost no one knows who Minnie's father is, and she certainly doesn't flaunt her past associations with Jacobites or her knowledge of complex ciphers.
  • Classy Cat-Burglar: Hal walks in on her in his study, and instead of arresting her, they have sex.

     Benjamin Grey

Benjamin Grey

One of Hal and Minnie's sons. He goes missing in MOBY and is eventually presumed dead, though his family refuse to believe it and continue to search for him.

     Henry Grey

Henry Grey

One of Hal and Minnie's sons.

     Dorothea Grey

Dorothea Grey

One of Hal and Minnie's sons.

     Olivia Pearsall

Allies and Friends

     Jamie Fraser

     Harry Quarry

     Tom Byrd

     Agnes Mac Nab

     Stephan Von Namtzen

     Percy Wainwright

Antagonists

     Tobias Quinn

Tobias Quinn

An Irish Jacobite supporter who attempts a rebellion against the House of Hanover in 1760.
  • Death by Despair: After realising that his cause is lost, he commits suicide, by cutting the veins in his wrist so that he bleeds to death.
