The main protagonist characters from Liberi Fatalis The Therianthrope Chronicles.

NOTE: Regarding non-original characters, only tropes that appear in the fanfic will be mentioned here, since the characterizations of those characters do not differ too much from their original canons.

World War II Era

Doctor Yoshinori Komatsu II (小松義則博士 Komatsu Yoshinori-hakase)

Age: 22 (at the beginning of the story)
Date of Birth: AD 1917
Birthplace: Japan, Planet Earth
Nationality: Japanese, through currently is a permanent resident in the United States
Race: Human
A human scientist born in Hiroshima, Japan and lived during his younger years studying abroad in Germany in the dawn of World War II, working along with the infamous Mad Scientist Josef Mengele, at first. Despite all this, Komatsu was at first an idealistic, albeit somewhat amoral man, who wanted to use his research on anthropomorphic people as a way to create new life forms that can be used as soldiers that could fight wars so humans will not have the need to fight themselves. His plans suffered a 360 degrees turn when his parents died during the American atomic attack against both Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
  • Adaptational Name Change: In the Refractions' story Exo-Genesis, his original name was Charles Ambrose Komatsu. As a result of changing his ethnicity from Japanese with western ancestry to being fully Japanese, his given name is now Yoshinori instead.
  • Despair Event Horizon: Komatsu suffers of this big time when he watched the nuclear destruction of Hiroshima and the fact that his parents were killed by the bomb, but the really kicker was when he found that his mother, Mitsuyo, was in a makeshift hospital... only to find that his mother had already passed away minutes before. And to make matters worse, the American occupation forces arrive at the hospital and arrest Komatsu, with the aim of forcibly taking him to the U.S.
  • Meaningful Name: His given name, Yoshinori, came from Japanese zoologist Yoshinori Imaizumi, known for describing the Iriomote cat in 1967, through the kanjis of their names are different.
  • Pretty Boy: According with his physical description in the story, Komatsu is being described as a very good looking man in his younger years.
  • Race Lift: In the Refractions' story Exo-Genesis, he was a Japanese man of unspecified western nationality, likely American judging by his name "Charles Ambrose". In this fanfic, he is a fully Japanese man named Yoshinori Komatsu.
  • They Called Me Mad!: You know very well that there's something very off on you when Josef Mengele and even Adolf Hitler himself think you are crazier than they were.

Katmandu Arc

Sargeant First Class Akane Araki (Birth name: Ariana Mutombo) (荒木明音1等陸曹 Araki Akane-ittō rikusō)

Age: 24 (at the beginning of the story)
Date of Birth: July 25th, AD 2275
Birthplace: Mbabane, Eswatini (formerly resided in Osaka, Japan), Planet Earth
Nationality: Naturalized Japanese, of Eswati origin
Race: Human
Akane Araki is the Deuteragonist of the Katmandu storyline, together with the canon protagonist Liska. Akane is an African-Japanese member of the Japanese Space Self-Defense Force's Space Ranger unit, and her journey takes an unexpected turn in Act XVIII, when she's stationed on the distant planet New Haiti. There, she reunites with Kaguya Hoshino, a former classmate suddenly whisked away to Earth by her father's orders. Together, they board the JSSDF-owned ship named Asuka, ready to make the interstellar leap home. But fate has other plans, since a mysterious glitch in the Jumping Drive throws the spaceship's course wildly off track, depositing them in the uncharted depths of the Katmandu solar system instead, and put them close next to the planet Katmandu III, the titular planet of the comic.

Subsequently, the situation takes a darker turn when the crew of the Asuka investigates the possibility of intelligent life on the aforementioned planet. Suddenly, the ship comes under attack from a squadron of mysterious robotic drones patrolling the planet. Despite the crew's heroic efforts to defend the ship, the drones overpower the Asuka, leading to its swift destruction. Fortunately, Akane survives by escaping in an escape pod, which forces her to make an emergency landing on the planet Katmandu.

After her pod lands on Katmandu, Akane realize, for her painful chagrin, that she is the lone human survivor from the Asuka. However, realizing she doesn't have the luxury to dwell on her misfortune, the woman understands that the drones responsible for the Asuka's destruction might be scouring the planet for any survivors to eliminate. With this urgency in mind, Akane begins walking in an unfamiliar direction, hoping to encounter any form of intelligent life that may exist on the planet.

Then, after wandering for a couple of days (and having a funny encounter with a riding lizard, one of the many local fauna from the planet), Akane accidentally falls into a trap to hunt prey in the middle of the desert, leaving her unconscious inside.

When this may have been the end of Akane, it turned out that that trap was set by Rial Hada-ro-seg and Pyndan Kota-te-mar, two of the protagonists of the comic, who were on hunting, and, after finding Akane unconscious inside the trap, both young warriors decided to take the human woman to the Highland tribe's village, so that she could recover there.

Once Akane regained consciousness, she noticed that the place she was resting resembled quite a lot like a Native American teepee. Then, the first person she met was none other than Liska Tas-so-wen, the protagonist, during her years of slavery. The human, for obvious reasons, freaks out by her presence, being the first human being to know an alien lifeform, let alone an anthropomorphic and feline one. Then, the situation became suddenly ugly when Akane, after seeing that Mother Sanna, the healer of the tribe, Rial and Pyndan's grandmother, and Liska's mistress, was cooking a soup for the human, but Akane mistaked the situation thinking that she and the feline aliens were trying to eat her alive, causing her to threatening her hosts, causing Rial to wanting to defend his grandmother from the human soldier. Luckily, the situation got defused when Liska, after figuring out that Akane was scared as a result of a misunderstanding, put herself between Akane and Rial, preventing the crisis from going worse.

And starting from this point, Akane befriends Liska, becoming her best friend, while the human soldier from Earth now tries to survive in the planet Katmandu along with her hosts, the Highland tribe, and learning to live a new life far away from her home world of Earth, and Japan as well.

  • Berserk Button: Akane had many things that settle her off on many ways:
    • Bringing up her weight is a quick way to anger her up, as she is quite chubby and many characters, especially the ones from Katmandu, comment about the topic countless times, much for her chagrin.
    • Slavery is a special button for her, since, being a black woman, the topic really piss her off, and this goes double during Liska's slavery time, as Akane pities her so much for her situation, and she continously butts heads with Rial, Liska's master at the time, and Pyndan for it.
    • For the same related reason regarding her ethnicity, racism and xenophobia are also buttons that angers Akane to no end, regardless the person affected.
    • Hurt her closer friends, especially Kaguya and Liska, and Akane will kick your ass. And God have mercy of your soul if you rape (Kayce) or kill them (Keisuke Noguchi, her subordinate) because she will go postal on her enemies.
  • But Not Too Foreign: Akane was born in Eswatini, formely Swaziland, in Africa, but she lost her parents due to sickness, and she was adopted by a Japanese couple from Osaka when she was just five-years old, and then she was a naturalized Japanese citizen later on, allowing her to become a member of the Japanese Space Self-Defense Force in her adulthood.
  • Comic-Book Fantasy Casting: According with the author, Akane is more or less based physically in the Haitian-Japanese tennis player Naomi Osaka, through some parts of her personality were taken from Samuel L. Jackson.
  • Dreadlock Warrior: Subverted. At first, Akane sported a dreadlock style when she met Kaguya in planet New Haiti, but, as a result of ending up in a different alien world, and as a result, no one else knows how to do that style, she had to settle for leaving her hair in a Samurai Ponytail instead.
  • Expy:
    • According with the author, Akane's main aspects from her background are heavily based from Matoo Anzasi, the main protagonist from the Katmandus Alternative Continuity Alternate Worlds of Katmandu, through Akane is a black woman from Africa, while Matoo is a white male, on top on being a Super-Soldier.
    • Likewise, Akane's sword fighting style and some design cues are based on Haohmaru, up to having a similar haircut.
  • Hates Being Touched: A downplayed example. Akane hates being touched by anyone outside her closer friends (Kaguya, Liska, the Highland Tribe's leadership, Panka, etc) and her family for still unexplained reasons.
  • Foreign-Language Tirade: Akane tends to curse in Japanese when doing so in the local languages spoken in the planet Katmandu isn't possible since there's not so much strong profanities beyond "crap" or "damn" in those languages.
  • Mighty Black Woman: Downplayed. While Akane is a human woman and hails from a technologically advanced society like Japan, and being one of the strongest warriors of the Highland tribe, she is not inherently better than her feline peers, for, while Akane has a great knowledge of military tactics, in addition to possessing both military and martial arts training, she, hailing from a society that has not experienced war in centuries, has never used those same skills in mortal combat against enemy warriors, being the closest she has come to using those same skills to deal with bullies or common criminals, but never against experienced enemy soldiers, like the Romalian soldiers who raided the tribe. This is in stark contrast with the Native warriors of the tribe, since they are more experienced on warfare than her, not to mention they live in a very dangerous world when any given day could be their last, and they fact they are anthropomorphic felines, giving them an edge over Akane in many ways, through she tries her best to improve her skills in order to match them.
  • Sole Survivor: She is the only living human survivor of the Asuka after the ship was destroyed by drones, forcing her to live in planet Katmandu for the rest of her life.
  • Space Marine: Well, technically she is a Space Ranger, something stated by her and the narrative countless times, but the idea is mostly the same.
  • Western Samurai: A futuristic example: Akane learned kenjutsu, more especifically on the Tenshin Shōden Katori Shintō-ryū, a real-life traditional Japanese martial school and considered as one of the few schools in Japan that teaches the samurai arts of war, and, while she is quite a bit excentric and emotional, she tries her best to follow the code of Bushido as best as she can.

Liska Mitsel-eman (neé Tas-so-wen before becoming a warrior)

The main protagonist from Katmandu and one of the deuteragonists of the story. While she retains many of her original traits from her original canon, these are played in a very different fashion here. To start with, Liska, while also begins her story as a slave for both Rial and his grandmother, Mother Sanna, in this fanfic Liska meets Akane while treating her wounds after both Rial and Pyndan found her unconscious at the bottom of a trap for herndons. After the not-so-friendly meeting once Akane woke up, both girls became incredibly good friends and allies, partly because Akane, being a free woman from Earth, pitied Liska due to her slave status and partly because their mutual admiration both women held toward each other.
  • Adaptational Angst Upgrade: While the Liska from her original canon was somewhat angsty at times, the one from this fanfic raised considerably her personal demons, as it's pretty obvious Liska has lots of unsolved problems troubling her head, including having a really Dark and Troubled Past.
  • Dreaming of Times Gone By: In Act XXXIV, fittingly named ALPTRÄUME, which is German for Nightmare, Liska dreams about being in many places from human history, and it's pretty obvious from the get-go that those places, in order of appearance, are the Battle of Berlin at 1945, including when the Russians set the USSR flag over the Reichstag, the atomic bombing of Hiroshima in the same year and a Middle Eastern city being nuked during World War III, as well as being being forced to watch many of the most brutal parts of human history, including the Holocaust, many images of Police Brutality, etc, by a mysterious young-like being tormenting her in her nightmare, despite she, an alien anthropomorphic cat, has no context or relationship with those events outside being the friend of Akane, an human from Earth.
