Walker Family

    open/close all folders
    Vincent "Vince" Walker
An air traffic mechanic. Father to Zoe.
Fate: Deceased or alive.

  • Action Survivor: He's just a loving father and aircraft mechanic who maneuvers his family through a perilous hostage situation with violent and erratic parties.
  • Anti-Hero: It's possible to have him assist the Holt family with their crimes, while still being a loving father and good man.
  • Happily Married: His marriage with Michelle goes through a rough patch, but depending on the player's action it's possible they end up this way.
  • The Hero Dies: He's the main playable character in book one and it's possible for him not to survive it.
  • Papa Wolf: One possible way to play him.

    Zoe Walker
Daughter of Vince and Michelle. A college student who enjoys swimming.
Fate: Alive.

  • Heroic BSoD: She's haunted and broken by what she went through as a child in the motel.

    Michelle Walker
Mother of Zoe.
Fate: Deceased or alive.

  • Affectionate Nickname: Bruce, the man she's having an affair with, calls her "Cupcake".
  • Amicable Exes: If the player chooses to not have Vincent forgive her, their split can be amicable.
  • Aww Look They Really Do Love Each Other: Her marriage with Vincent has been on the rocks for several months and only worsened when Vincent found out that she was cheating, however, she rushes to try and save Vincent when Tyler threatens to shoot him. This results in her getting shot by Dale when he tries to stop her.
  • Happily Married:
    • Downplayed Trope. In the flashback to just before they began to move, she seems perfectly happy with Vincent ... until it's revealed that she's cheating on him when he checks her phone. The rest of the flashback plays out with him confronting her on it, though whether or not he forgives her and whether they decide to divorce does depend on the player.
    • Depending on the player's actions, she and Vincent can end up being happily married again despite the things they've gone through.
  • Implausible Deniability: Initially, she'll insist that she's not having an affair despite Vincent having seen the text and offering up other evidence that she's been sneaking around, such as catching her staying out later than usual and coming home smelling like wine.
  • Never My Fault: Downplayed Trope. While she'll admit that she screwed up with cheating, she'll still blame Vincent for emotionally and physically neglecting her due to his depressive state after losing his job.
  • Sympathetic Adulterer: When confronted on it, Michelle will try to justify her affair by telling Vincent that it's because he's been emotionally and physically distant from her since he lost his job. Whether Vincent plays into this or calls her out for trying to make him feel guilty for her mistakes depends on the player's choices.

    James "Jim" Walker
Father of Vince, and grandfather to Zoe.
Fate: Alive.
  • Cool Old Guy: Calm, laid back, and a doting grandfather to Zoe. During the entirety of the motel incident, he never once seems scared or loses his cool. He's made plenty of mistakes in the past, but he's willing to atone and try to make up for them.
  • Mysterious Past: Serves as a possible Sequel Hook.
  • Parental Abandonment: Was out of Vince's life for a long time, but returned some time before the story begins.
  • Your Days Are Numbered: Subverted. He's lying about having terminal cancer in order to try and get Vince and Michelle to let him move in with them.

Holt Family

    Jay Holt
The youngest of the Holt brothers.
Fate: Deceased or alive.

  • Amicable Exes: If they escaped together, he's presumably this with Vanessa after the timeskip. He doesn't hold a grudge over her leaving him to live a normal life and is happy for the time they spent together.
  • Anti-Hero: He spends the story committing crimes and running from the law, but he's a good person at heart who tries to do the right thing when push comes to shove.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: He's a nice kid at heart, but capable of doing horrible things to people nonetheless.
  • Broken Bird:
    • After the 14-year time skip, it's clear Jay isn't doing well living alone with just him and his dog, Roosevelt. He won't care or blame Zoe for calling the authorities on him, even telling her he might be happy about it, despite being aware that he will likely be executed for his past crimes.
    • In the endings where Jay is arrested and going to be executed, he doesn't seem bothered by his fate after the time skip and even offers to let Zoe watch, if it brings her any comfort. However, he does sigh with relief if his execution is called off.
  • Did Not Get the Girl: He and Vanessa don't last no matter what the player chooses.
  • Karma Houdini: Downplayed Trope. Regardless of the number of crimes he committed, Jay can still potentially escape into Canada and live 14 years in relative peace, 6 of which can determinantly be spent with Vanessa. However, when Zoe comes to visit him, it's clear he's still living with the guilt of what happened 14 years ago and will presumably kill himself if Zoe doesn't comfort him after forgiving him.
  • Nice Guy: It's more than possible to play him as this.
  • Red Oni: Out of all three of the Holt brothers, Jay is the more sensitive one while Tyler and Dale are hotheaded and aggressive.
  • Troubled, but Cute: He's only eighteen and would probably pass for a few years younger, but goes through hell with the rest of his family.
  • Uncertain Doom:
    • If Jay escaped to Canada and Zoe calls the authorities on him, it's unknown what becomes of him after he's taken into police custody.
    • If Jay escaped to Canada and is forgiven by Zoe but not comforted by her, he will walk off into the wilderness alone, presumably to kill himself.
  • The Protagonist: He's on the center of the game's cover, and you play as him the most often.

    Tyler Holt
The oldest of the Holt brothers.
Fate: Incarcerated, deceased, or alive.

    Dale Holt
The middle child of the Holt brothers.
Fate: Deceased.

  • Hair-Trigger Temper: The quickest to anger and rash decisions of all the Holt brothers.
  • Pet the Dog: In spite of being somewhat of a hotheaded Jerkass, seeing him crack a smile when talking to his crush on the phone shows that he does have a softer side to his personality.
    • He also befriends Vincent, if the player has Vincent play nice with him.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: No matter what you do, he isn't surviving Book One.

    Sharon Holt
Mother to Jay, Dale, and Tyler.
Fate: Alive. Incarcerated or in exile.

  • Bullying a Dragon: Sharon would like to think that she's a resourceful chessmaster. But at the end of the day, she doesn't have an ounce of the number of resources or friends that Dante Romero has at his disposal and is just a lowly criminal who continually bites off more than she can chew. This winds up being her undoing, as she's forced to either leave the country or face time in prison.
  • Karma Houdini: Can potentially escape to Cuba with Paul if the player lets him help her.
  • Mama Bear: For all her faults, she loves her sons and raised Jay like he was one of her own.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Gloating to Dante about the black book in order to get the bus was not the most brilliant move.
  • Really Gets Around: Paul implies that in her youth, she was "loved" by a lot of people, Dante being one of them.
  • We Used to Be Friends: She has a history with Paul, and it's heavily implied that he had romantic feelings for her at one point, though she never reciprocated. In the present, should she make it to his home, she will try to manipulate him into helping her escape the country. Whether or not he falls for her acts or turns her into law enforcement depends on the player.

    Bear Holt
Father to Jay, Dale, and Tyler.
Fate: Deceased or alive.

  • Abusive Parents: He's very verbally and physically abusive towards his sons.
  • The Alcoholic: His addictions are the main catalyst for his family's problems.
  • Sole Survivor: Potentially. If he lives, since he wasn't directly involved in the motel incident, he's the only member of the Holt family who can make it out with his freedom. Otherwise, he still shares this with Sharon Holt, since she makes it out alive no matter what the player does.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Despite not having any direct involvement in the robbery of Dante's house or the motel incident, his gambling debt is the reason why the Holt boys are even compelled to commit the crimes in the first place.

Other Characters

    Sheriff Dante Romero
The sheriff of Two Rock, Arizona.
Fate: Alive.

  • Ambiguously Evil: All that's clear is that he takes political bribes and isn't afraid to resort to murder. However, it's never clear whether or not he's taking bribes out of pure malice intent or to serve a greater good and thus his true moral standing beyond that is up to interpretation.
  • Base-Breaking Character: An In-Universe example. The Holts consider him to be a selfish bastard, Paul doesn't trust him, but Joyce thinks that he's decent.
  • Crooked Cop: Takes political bribes, and isn't above resorting to violence or even murder to protect his secret.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Even if Vince betrays his trust and Zoe is in the cruiser, he never once takes advantage of that fact to get back at Vince and he doesn't seek further revenge on Vince after the motel incident is over.
  • Karma Houdini: No matter how you may feel about him, Dante makes it out alive at the end.
  • Perpetual Frowner Dante's default expression is a deep scowl that never turns into a smile.

    Joyce
The owner of the motel in Two Rock.
Fate: Deceased or alive.

  • Hair-Trigger Temper: The situation she's in likely didn't help, but she's very angry about being held hostage by the Holt family and doesn't hold back on verbalizing it. This can lead to her death if the player doesn't have Vincent quiet her down.
  • Missing Mom: If she's killed by one of the Holt brothers, her son Ash will be left without a parental guardian.
  • Nice Girl: Her Establishing Character Moment is her allowing Vincent and his family to book two rooms at the motel because they have a kid with them, despite knowing they don't have enough money for it.
  • Offing the Mouth: She'll be shot and killed by one of the Holt brothers if the player doesn't have Vincent stop her from running her mouth off to them.
  • Too Dumb to Live: She can potentially be shot and killed if she's allowed to continuously antagonize her kidnappers.

    Paul
A handyman
Fate: Alive. Possibly in exile.

  • Hopeless Suitor: In his youth, he had feelings for Sharon but she always chose other men over him. He can end up with her in the present should they escape to Cuba together.
  • Karma Houdini: If the player has him help Sharon, they'll escape to Cuba together and Sharon will presumably never face persecution for her crimes, nor will he for aiding her.
  • Nice Guy: Tries to make the best of a bad situation and is helpful to the Walker family until the motel situation is over.
  • Super Gullible: Though it depends on the player's actions, they can have Dale fall for Sharon's obvious attempts at manipulating him emotionally so he'll help her escape. Alternatively, they can play Paul as steadfast and turn her into the police.
  • We Used to Be Friends: He has a history with Sharon which she will try to use to manipulate him into helping her. Whether or not she's successful in doing this depends on the player.

    Ash
Joyce's son.
Fate: Alive.

  • Out of Focus: Out of all of the controllable characters, his playable portion is the shortest. His only role in the game is to determine whether or not Dante finds out about the Holt family's cabin and he never really appears again outside of that.

    Vanessa
A friend of Jay he meets while in exile.
Fate: Incarcerated or alive.

  • Ambiguous Situation: Vanessa's feelings for Jay and whether she genuinely liked him, or viewed him as an opportunity to escape from her suffocating home life. If they successfully escaped together, it will turn out that she left him after six years to return to living a normal life, giving some indication that she felt some loyalty to him, however, the full circumstances of her leaving are unclear, and Jay only has his own theories for why she left him.
  • Brainless Beauty: She's very attractive, which aids in Jay falling for her if the player allows it. However, she's oblivious to the real-life consequences her actions have, such as aiding and abetting a criminal that she just met, calling her grandmother without realizing that the call could be tracked, and, potentially, confronting her father during a police confrontation, which will lead to her being put into juvenile detention for some years.
  • Bratty Teenage Daughter: Part of the reason she helps Jay and runs away with him (Determinant) is to rebel against her controlling father.
  • Did Not Get the Girl: No matter what the player does, Jay and Vanessa don't stay together.
    • If Vanessa chooses to confront her father during the police confrontation, Vanessa will be taken into custody, and incarcerated depending on whether the players choose to have Jay surrender to the police or escape.
    • If Jay and Vanessa successfully escape together, after a time skip, Jay explains to Zoe that they spent six years together in hiding, but Vanessa eventually left him to live a normal life.
  • Lethally Stupid: Her insistence on running away with Jay and her actions on the way can potentially land him in hotter water than if he tried to go it alone.
  • Love Interest: Is set up to be one to Jay since her introduction. They don't end up together.
  • Missing Mom: Her mother died before the events of the game, which still affects her in the present.
  • Nice Girl: Decides to help Jay in any way she can despite him being a stranger to her, even after being informed that he's a wanted criminal, and gives up her chances of freedom to be with him. They don't last.
  • Oh, Crap!: If Vanessa gets taken into police custody during the confrontation and the player doesn't have Jay turn himself in to save her, she will demandingly tell her father to order the officers to let her go, to which FBI agent will tell him that the deal was that Vanessa would only be let off the hook if Jay surrendered himself. Vanessa will then make a scared expression as she's taken away as if she had just realized she's in deep trouble.
  • Super Gullible: She trusts Jay enough to believe any lie the player has him say to her, without questioning it.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: If she runs away with Jay, a time skip shows to six years later she's no longer with him. If asked by Zoe, Jay will tell her what happened to Vanessa, with her fate dependent on the player's actions.
    • If she and Jay successfully escape together, Jay will explain that they were happy together, but after six years, Vanessa eventually grew tired of living in hiding and left him to live a normal life. What became of her after this is unknown, but Jay thinks she's in California.
    • If Vanessa gets taken in by the police and the player doesn't choose to have Jay turn himself in to save her, she'll be incarcerated and sent to juvenile detention for some years. Jay will report that she's doing well thanks to some help from her lawyers.
