This kind of trope name is just the kind that begs for misuse to write a Zero-Context Example. Bolded text indicates that it is so. It also uses "trope" as a placeholder, which is something not to be done.

The page is divided over the correct amount of words, which looks like just a Stock Phrase, and the wrong amount of words, which looks like it's a common trait of The Ditz. Still, I am not sure of whether it deserves a hard split.

I may come back with a wick check later if it is necessary.

"Trope" as a stock word in names is never a good thing. This needs a rename at the very least.

I'm pretty sure that "trope" in this name is actually fine. It's not being used as a placeholder, it's being used because that's actually where the obvious trope would go.

I wouldn't be opposed to a rename, but it's not that bad.

There are two redirects, One Word and Two Words, neither of which I like because they're too broad.

Two Words: Stock Phrase?

Short And Snappy. The current page ought to be a redirect to Zero-Context Example.

I'm not sure if that indicates the "two words" or "three words" aspect though.

Redirecting the page or disambiguating it may be a good idea, with a deliberate redlink.

Is there actual misuse?

If not then why bother changing it?

What would a disambiguation page used for? There isn't any ambiguity is there?

Also, why should we redlink it?

Why not just add a little bit to it? "Got Two Words for You" or "I've Got Two Words"

These two plainly violate No New Stock Phrases, sorry.

This itself is a Stock Phrase. The restriction does not seem to account for renaming existing stock phrases.

Ed has been stating that in numerous TRS topics already, so yeah, it quite applies to new names as well.

Oh. Never Trust A Trope's alternate names seemed to be based on stock phrases so I was confused.

You are proposing a rename based on ambiguity.

That means that one of the strongest pieces of evidence you can present to support your case is evidence of widespread misuse.

That means a wick check is necessary.

Right, sorry. I'm working on it now.

I'm looking to separate wicks from uses or attempts to use as a trope and blatant use as part of a Zero-Context Example (like "Three words: Onstage Tesla Coils.") Should I check for other misuse as well?

Go through the appropriate number of wicks and separate them out into

  • Correct use: it's used as a trope name, regarding the use of the trope within the work.
  • Incorrect use:
    • Sinkholed; not used in the work at all (This is where your "Three words: Onstage Tesla Coils" would go, unless that's actually a line from a work. If it's not, it's just the person who wrote the example trying to be clever.)
    • Not used according to the definition
    • Used as a ZCE for another trope.
    • Add any other ways that you find it being misused as subcategories here
  • Can't tell:
    • Used as a ZCE
    • Example has some information, but either there's not enough or you aren't familiar enough with the work to tell whether the use is correct from the information that's there.

No problems with the check so far. Thank you for clarifying.

A check on every five wicks on the main Two Words: Obvious Trope page for a total of 66. Two Words may be checked separately, though I do not expect the results to be too different, or possibly worse.

A large amount of misuse was found under YMMV subpages (like Awesome, Funny, etc.)

Used as a trope

  1. Recap.Angel S 02 E 08 The Shroud Of Rahmon
  2. Cool and Unusual Punishment
  3. ComicStrip.Dogs Of C Kennel

  8. Re Boot The Abridged Series
  9. Splash Panel
  10. Recap.Supernatural S 08 E 23 The Sacrifice

  6. Literature.Casson Family Series
  7. HoYay.Degrassi The Next Generation (Nuff said.)
  8. WebOriginal.Dirty Laundry An Alternate1980s

  10. WMG.El Goonish Shive
  11. Narm.Film I To P
  12. Awesome.Gears Of War

  29. ShoutOut.Schlock Mercenary
  30. VideoGame.Sonic Colors
  31. Funny.Sunset Beach

  34. Torture for Fun and Information
  35. Funny.Transformers
  36. Determinator.Video Games
  37. KillItWithFire.Video Games
  38. Washizu Lord Of Mahjong Hell
  39. TooDumbToLive.Western Animation
  40. Widget Series
  41. YMMV.Yet Again
  42. Awesome.Zerosaga1

Misused otherwise

  1. Hopeless Boss Fight (In one TabletopGame.Vampire The Masquerade rulebook, there is a section on fighting Caine that consists of two words, "You Lose.")
  2. Primal Fear (There are two words, but the obvious part is saying the example is obvious)
  3. Nightmare Fuel.Terminator (same as above)

Unclear

  1. Narm.Live Action TV (link to a 10 minute video)
  2. Native American Mythology (can't tell if it is saying the example is obvious or Vision Quest is involved with it)
  3. Awesome.Nuzlocke Comics (the example starts with a quotation mark, but has no ending quotation mark, so I could not tell if it is part of the quote or the entry)
  4. Funny. The Nostalgia Critic 2008 Episodes (occurs twice, so I do not know if it is being quoted)
  5. YMMV.Turn A Gundam

Zero-Context Example

  1. Webcomic.Shortpacked

  1. Fan Myopia (a Lampshade Hanging on the phenomenon)
  2. This Trope Name References Itself

  • Total of 66 links
  • 12 correct
  • 45 misuse
  • 6 unclear
  • 68% misuse
  • 77% misuse + unclear

Indeed, cause for a rename.

And Mikuru, that's a very well-done wick check. Thanks.

Any more comments on whether it should be renamed?

Honestly, I was under the impression that this was just a redirect for Zero Context Example, and that it wasn't supposed to be linked. Had no idea it was a real trope. Another vote for rename.

Something like Word Count For Emphasis would be a Boring, but Practical name for the trope being described. (I also think that Wrong Word Count For Emphasis, for when people say things like "I've got two words for you, man: go to hell" should be spun off as a separate subtrope.)

Really from Jupiter, but not an alien.
