Voiced by: Naomi Ozora (Japanese), Lisette Monique Diaz (English)

The self-proclaimed second-in-command to the Demon Lord prior to being cast to Earth. Now works as a waitress.

  • Affectionate Nickname: "Hy-chan"(Sweet-Hy in the manga and "Hy-Hy" in the anime's English dub) by the Owner and "Ja-ko" by Ryou.
  • Bad Boss: Back when she was the Number Two of the whole demon race, she was pretty much the worst boss imaginable, not only tormenting all of her servants For the Evulz, but also often executing those she found no longer useful. After losing her realm and power, not only is she both forced to serve under another person and has her livelihood dictated by somebody above her, but in the process of living the life of a human, she's developing a conscience and sense of morality that makes her feel disturbed and ashamed about how she used to be.
  • Barefoot Poverty: While Jahy does wear proper shoes in her adult form, mainly when working at her job, when in Sleep-Mode Size she prefers hanging around barefoot, as she seems to have few to no clothes that size anyway nor much money to spend on them; at most she wears a pair of rubber crocs for the street which she slips off at home.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Jahy slowly becomes more at ease at the human world due to the kindness of the owner, Kokoro, and even Ryou.
  • Butt-Monkey: Jahy is constantly humiliated, demeaned, and robbed of her dignity during her quest of restoring her realm.
  • Casting Gag: This isn't the first time Naomi Ozora played a demon girl with an oversized ego, but tends to be subjected to Butt-Monkey treatment. It helps that the two series have very similar premises, being supernatural Slice of Life comedies.
  • Cat Girl: While Jahy isn't actually a cat girl, her appearance and behavior strongly evoke one, to the point she's taking a side-job at a cat cafe to act like a cat.
  • Cats Are Mean: Her default form has cat-like ears and she is very mean.
  • Character Development: She starts off as a haughty woman before being stripped of everything and becoming a lowly demon. However, she gradually becomes more approachable due to spending a long amount of time on Earth and becomes somewhat disgusted with herself for her behavior back home. She eventually reaches the point that she would fight to defend the Maou pub to the death, up to and including Taking the Bullet for the town from a clash of Breath Weapons between Maou and the Being of Light, which thankfully doesn't have fatal consequences for Jahy.
  • Cute Little Fang: Whenever she's acting adorably bratty and childish, one of her canine teeth becomes extra prominent. While this happens most often in her Sleep-Mode Size, she sometimes acts bratty enough in her true form for a tooth to become visible.
  • Defeat Catchphrase: Every time she experiences either a setback to her demon realm restoration plan or perceives herself as being humiliated, she will do a partial Title Drop by exclaiming "I will not be defeated!" / "I won't be discouraged!"
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: Jahy utterly refuses to admit it's happening to her, but spending long enough on Earth interacting with humans, especially humans like Kokoro that genuinely like and respect her, is causing her to lose most of her villainous attitude and become increasingly approachable.
  • Determinator: As the titles in both Japanese and English put quite clearly, no matter how many setbacks she experiences or how many times she gets humiliated, nothing will permanently discourage or defeat her when it comes to her desire to restore both the demon realm and her former status as Number Two of the demon race. Even as human life alters her views of her original rule, her desires and will to accomplish them never waver beyond some small doubts.
  • Didn't Think This Through: When setting up traps for the magical girl in her apartment, Jahy assumes she's going to show up soon and doesn't stop to think how she's going to get out if the magical girl doesn't show up, leaving her stuck in her apartment until Ryou shows up to ask for the rent.
  • Disappointed by the Motive: She eventually learned that the Being of Light is the Maou's younger sister and that the Demon Realm was destroyed because her attempt to simply contact the reclusive Maou through a magical girl spiraled out of control due to poor communication. Needless to say, Jahy was furious that she had gone through so much hardship and sorrow because of someone's childish need for an older sibling's love. Jahy only relents when everyone else, including the Maou, forgive the Being of Light, but she understandably continues to nurse a grudge.
  • Don't You Dare Pity Me!: As a result of her pride, Jahy is incapable of asking for help, especially from her former servant Druj, not only to help her retrieve the mana crystals, but also for her daily life. As such, she'd rather put on a cool face and pretend that she has everything in control. Still, this has not kept the people that care about her from helping.
  • Dragon-in-Chief: Technically speaking she's subservient to the will of Maou, but various flashbacks imply Maou was a major case of Orcus on His Throne, so Jahy acted as pretty much the de-facto leader of the demon race.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Jahy becomes increasingly disturbed by Druj's love of being treated like filth after living in the human world for a good while.
  • Exposed to the Elements: She seems almost adamant about wearing Stripperific clothing that quite obviously doesn't include underwear, even in colder weather. When it comes time for the Sick Episode, she reveals that back when she was the immensely powerful Demon Realm Number Two she was effectively immune to illness unlike her weaker followers, and she's horrified by the implication that when she gets sick it means she's become weaker in every way.
  • Failure Is the Only Option: In the beginning when she was still an aggressive and controlling Jerkass, Laser-Guided Karma always made sure that her gem-finding efforts would both end in failure and humiliate her harshly, no matter how determined she was to succeed. When she gained a Hidden Heart of Gold she started seeing a few successes, but the moment she acted as an ass again her previous success would usually be negated in some way. This eventually lessened to just failure at keeping her pride instead of achieving her goal once her newfound hidden kindness grew big enough that she does more good than bad.
  • Fatal Flaw: Her Pride is the biggest source of her continued failures. Even at her current status, she still tries to act haughty and powerful just to save face, especially to her previous aide, Druj. Half of her problems stem from her unwillingness to tell others that she's living a meager life, because that means accepting their pity and possible help.
  • Heroic BSoD: Well, protagonist BSoD, anyway. After she discovers what she thought was the magical girl was in fact a male cosplayer, complete with beard, she sits stunned in a chair, her eyes blank, trying to process it.
  • Honor Before Reason: Jahy's pride and self-worth are so tied to her perception of how she used to be that any offer of assistance in her current circumstances is taken as a grave insult to the point she will refuse offers of food despite being constantly near starvation just because her pride couldn't handle relying on another.
  • Horned Humanoid: Ep 5 of the anime shows her tufts of hair that look like cat ears are actually closer to horns, with bone structure attached to her skull.
  • How the Mighty Have Fallen: The core of the series. From Dragon-in-Chief to a part-timer in Perpetual Poverty.
  • Humanity Is Infectious: After spending most of her life acting as an utter tyrant, being forced to depend on humans for her survival and demon-gem-finding efforts is causing Jahy to gradually become more humanlike in personality, developing empathy and a conscience about how bad she used to be. It's a gradual process and she's trying her best to fight against it due to her pride, but even her attitudes about the Demon King and her servant Druj have been changing.
  • I Hate Past Me: Over the course of the manga, Jahy grows morally conscious of her previous actions in the Demon Realm, such as being disturbed by Druj's masochism.
  • Irony: Jahy, the second in command of the Dark Realm, is not only serving humans, but also helping them and even saving them in various instances.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Jahy already had some hints of hidden niceness even in the past, but coming to Earth and losing her power have caused her to start developing a genuine sense of budding kindness underneath her smug and condescending attitude. She strongly dislikes showing this newfound side since it risks destroying her fearsome reputation, but people like Kokoro are capable of coercing her into showing a good and lovable side simply by being nice and respectful to her.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: With how circumstances keep occurring that instantly affect Jahy in relation to her actions, it seems that the very force of karma has put most of its attention on her. Every time she does something bad she sooner or later will get her comeuppance, such as being reduced to Perpetual Poverty and forced to depend on kind humans as retribution for being such a vile demonic Bad Boss, or losing one of her mana crystals by acting like a smug jerk, while when she does something good she not long after gets rewarded with either increasingly happy living conditions or more mana crystals.
  • Meaningful Name: She's named after Jahi, the Zoroastrian demon of whores and sexual temptation, and she dresses like a stripper when she's in her adult form.
  • Ms. Fanservice: In her adult/true form, Jahy defaults to a Stripperific outfit with two straps covering her breasts, and when in said appearance, the story wastes no time using camera angles or having her pose in ways that show off her curvy and well-endowed body.
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: Sometimes even when she avoids being a Jerkass, she suffers from this.
    • Not quite good, since she initially started on it to save money on food, but she does end up legitimately invested in the growth of "Tomarou", putting a good deal of care and effort into "her". Due to an oversight on her part however, she ends up with habanero peppers, which she can't eat on their own without burning her tongue.
    • Zig-Zagged one time. When she sees Kokoro being helped up after she trips, she mistakes the men for creepers and drop kicks them. While it's all a misunderstanding, she still ends up arrested, in part because she tried running from the police.
    • Zig-Zagged again in the Beach Episode. Suspecting that there's a huge mana crystal causing all manners of misfortune at the beach, Jahy ends up saving several people from the water so they won't get in the way of her search. On the one hand, she ends up finding two whole buckets worth of mana crystals once night falls and they start shining from the water, which she speculates is enough for her to finally fight the magical girl. On the other, since her searching and rescuing required her to skip work without permission, she ends up getting her pay deducted.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: When Ryou has a falling-out with her sister, Jahy tells her that she should cherish the home and loved ones she has before it's too late, heavily implying that she sees herself in Ryou and regrets how she was such a Jerkass in the past that she lost everything, and in her own Tsundere way is expressing worry about Ryou going down the same path.
  • Perpetual Poverty: Jahy lives in an old, rickety apartment complex, eats beansprouts for dinner, and struggles to make ends meet.
  • Pet the Dog:
    • She rescues a baby bird when it fell out of its nest. Ironically, she discovers a mana crystal for her selfless act.
    • After coming to like Kokoro as a friend, Jahy does not think twice to defend Kokoro when she thought she was being harassed by strange men.
    • At the beach, she saves several beachgoers, though she would like to pretend that she only did it to find the gems.
  • Power Gives You Wings: Can manifest a pair of demonic wings in her adult form.
  • Pride: Her main defect, and one of the reasons she goes through so much strife, with her refusing to accept that anybody might be better than her (such as Druj gathering thousands of more gems and having a much more successful Earth life) or that she ever needs another person's help (like being provided shelter and food by Ryou and her sister or telling Druj she needs money).
  • Proud Beauty: As noted repeatedly through narration, her original form was beautiful and very sexy, and the way she carried herself makes it quite obvious that she took especially strong pride in being one of the most attractive, if not the most attractive, demon in the demon realm. It's half the reason she dislikes her Sleep-Mode Size, as alongside being weak and helpless in the form, she loses all of her allure and sexiness, looking like a young child that people never take seriously and often coddle or dote on, which wounds her ego heavily.
  • Reused Character Design: Her design was based on Safi, the Funny Foreigner compulsive belly dancer sweetheart from Wakame Konbu's previous work Yume Miru Prima Girl!, tan, hair tufts and Cute Little Fangs included, only that Safi doesn't braid her hair.
  • Shameless Fanservice Girl: As part of her Proud Beauty self-image, she deliberately wore a Stripperific outfit designed to highlight all of her curves, and it's clear from her attitude and actions that she had no shame about constantly walking around half-naked. When Saurva turned into her using a magic pill, original outfit included, she felt immensely embarrassed and wondered if Jahy was some sort of pervert.
  • Sitcom Arch-Nemesis: With Ryou due to the fact the main conflict between them is Jahy's refusal to pay her rent when it is due.
  • Sleep-Mode Size: Following the destruction of the Demon Realm, and with it the massive magical power she possessed from her direct connection to the Demon Lord's mana crystals, Jahy has been so deprived of magic that her body transformed into that of a young girl. Gathering mana crystals allows her to regain her adult form, but she starts out barely being able to sustain it for a few hours and can't tap into any real power, though the more gems she gathers the longer she can stay transformed and the stronger her power becomes. Though while she would prefer being permanently in her adult form, she has found it to provide some perks, such as getting away with things that are considered just harmless playing for kids, or conserving her strength while hiding from people who'd antagonize her.
  • Stripperific: Jahy's original outfit that she uses when trying to act out her role as demonic Number Two is basically a skimpy two-piece bikini and boots, with the top basically designed to expose everything but her nipples. In her Sleep-Mode Size, she wears a baggy, ill-fitting shirt and nothing else. This is also Deconstructed as her skimpy demonic outfit makes her look suspicious or be mistaken for a deviant in modern Japan.
  • Taking the Bullet: Jumps into the middle of the Kaiju Battle between Maou and the Being of Light to protect the town and its residents from their rampage. Thankfully, Jahy comes out of this with no more than some scratches.
  • Technicolor Eyes: Combined with Animal Eyes. In her child form, she has orange eyes with yellow slit pupils, while in her adult form she has golden eyes with dark slit pupils.
  • Tomboy: In behavior mostly, as she's quite foul-mouthed even for a being of her status (or former status, for that matter).
  • Trauma Button: After being attacked by the Mahou Shoujo in her own home, just saying the word 'maho-' is enough to send Jahy running or hiding. In a trash can, if need be.
  • Tsundere: Even as her time on Earth slowly humbles her and cause her to rethink her prior attitude, she adamantly refuses to admit this to anyone.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: Back in the Demon Realm she was given so much power by the Demon King that she was untouchable by all other demons and ruled with an iron fist, having all other demons serve her for her immense power. Following her being depowered with the Demon Realm's destruction, it's shown quite clearly that said power was all she had going for her, as she had no skills for making a living without power, she's so dumb that she can't comprehend anything more complex than an average cell-phone, and when she tries working out she learns that she never built up any normal physical strength.
  • Vague Age: It's a bit unclear what her actual, biological age is. While she claims to Ryou that she's much older than her, the fact she was reduced to a child-like Sleep-Mode Size while the other demons besides Maou (whose physical body is literally manifested from her mana crystals and thus is fully justified in having a sleep-mode size from insufficient crystals) retained their adult looks, has a Womanchild type personality, and the unclearness of whether demons have Proportional Aging that makes them live longer than humans, altogether make it seem less like she's an adult demon drained of so much power she turned into a kid, and more like she's the demonic equivalent of an Adorably Precocious Child who got an In-Universe Plot-Relevant Age-Up after being gifted immense power by Maou.
  • Vapor Wear: Jahy in her Sleep-Mode Size usually goes around wearing literally only a T-shirt, not only dismissing shoes but also quite clearly not wearing any underwear based on some shots. Her original outfit is a borderline case, as the enclosed pants hide whether or not she wears panties under them, but her top being just a pair of rather thin straps covering her nipples makes it clear she doesn't wear a bra, which in particular is what makes a shapeshifted Saurva notice how skimpy the outfit is, as in her excitement at the transformation working, she jumped enthusiastically enough to experience some light bouncing.
  • Villain Protagonist: As the former Dragon-in-Chief to the Demon Lord, Jahy's goal is to collect the mana crystals and revive the Demon Realm. Character Development sees Jahy eventually slide from this into Anti-Villain territory, if not being a straight up Anti-Hero (although Jahy herself would never accept such a label) as her goal is not actually stated to be detrimental to anyone, especially if it would remove the Mana Crystals from the Human Realm.
  • Villain with Good Publicity: She was well known in the Dark Realm and she was both adored and envied. In the human realm...not so much.
  • Womanchild: Could also lean slightly towards "psychopathic," but Jahy fits this. Despite being implied to be massively older than her boss and the landlady, Jahy acted like a child even before she had her run in with the Magical Girl. On Earth, she acts like a bratty, petulant child who throws temper tantrums when things don't go her way. When she is invited to a bathhouse by the two women, Jahy is easily mesmerized by the shampoo sudding her hair.

    Owner

Voiced by: Ai Kayano (Japanese), Natalie Hoover (English)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bossjahysama.jpg

Chisa, most commonly referred to as "Owner", is the proprietor of Maou, the restaurant Jahy works at. She's the older sister of Ryou, Jahy's landlord. A sweet and kind young woman, she's very given to coddle Jahy.

  • All-Loving Hero: According to Ryou, who knows her best. Also given some minor deconstruction, as Ryou comments she doesn't seem to understand some people might be better avoided.
  • Cool Big Sis: To basically all of the cast, but particularly to Ryou, who is her actual little sister.
  • Dumb Blonde: While sweet, she tends to be clueless about some things or not fully comprehend Jahy's antics.
  • Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": Most everyone calls her "Owner"/"Boss", aside from Ryou, who calls her "Sis".
  • Living Emotional Crutch:
    • Towards Jahy, due to her readiness for lending an ear and a shoulder to cry on. Her support is one of the main sources for morale for Jahy.
    • She also later becomes this for Su.
  • Motherly Side Plait: She sports one, which fits her motherly personality.
  • Ms. Fanservice: A lot of focus is put on her huge rack. Which gets even more emphasis when she's turned into a Magical Girl.
  • Nice Girl: She is unceasingly kind towards Jahy, though not above a little subtle manipulation of the girl if it means benefiting both of them. Her kindness is what moves the Being of Light to turn her into a Magical Girl. However, she refuses to obey the Being of Light and attack Jahy precisely because she's so kind.
  • No Name Given: As a result of almost everybody calling her "owner" or "boss", and her sister Ryou only ever referring to her as "sis", her real name wasn't mentioned until Chapter 69, where it was revealed to be "Chisa."
  • Not So Stoic: Overlapping with Loving Bully. Even with all her niceness, it's shown that she's not a stranger to trolling Jahy and her sister for her own amusement, though she's never malicious about it.
  • Sheep in Sheep's Clothing: She's one of the nicest characters in the story, with even her manipulative side benefiting Jahy in the long run, but one incident involved her learning the true power of the mana crystals, after which she offered to take care of Jahy's collection for a while and acted incredibly suspicious, making Jahy terrified and depressed that it seemed like all the owner's niceness was to deceive her into letting her guard down. Then she found out the owner's secret, and it was just using the bizarre properties of the gems to create some especially good pickled food, after which Jahy experiences a near heart-attack because of the emotional whiplash, and complains to the owner that this wasn't a secret-worthy situation.
  • Team Mom: She's this towards her sister Ryou, Jahy, and Su.
  • Tranquil Fury: She's always very calm and normally quite friendly, but as Jahy comes to learn, it's not wise to make her mad.
  • Wake Up Fighting: She is a terribly rowdy sleeper, punching and kicking in her sleep. Jahy comes to learn this the hard way, just as Ryou did before her, and later Su becomes an unwitting victim of this.
  • Weight Woe: When her arms start getting flabby, she exercises with Jahy only to then go back to where she was by eating several sweets in the epilogue.

    Ryou the Landlady
Voiced by: Yōko Hikasa (Japanese), Suzanne Decarma (English)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/landlady_anime.png

The boss's younger sister and the one who gets up in arms with Jahy whenever she arrives to collect the rent.

  • A-Cup Angst: She does not take kindly about any mention about her figure. This comes out often because of her sister, who is markedly busty.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Does this when she hears Jahy screaming in her apartment, and finds the Magical Girl trying to steal the mana crystal. Though all she does is call the police, she does end up saving the day as a result.
  • The Dreaded: Played for Laughs with Jahy, due to her insistence on Jahy paying her rent, and getting into fights with her over it. If Jahy does have the money, she usually ends up paying her rent for that month after being beaten.
  • In Vino Veritas: She once gets drunk with Jahy and lets the latter know that she's more than aware of how hard she's been working towards her goals, and that she's nothing but proud of Jahy for it.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: She refuses to take any crap from Jahy, not only aggressively trying to get her to pay the rent but also strongarming her into doing things she hates because they're necessary, but a good part of why she does so, besides wanting to be repaid for sheltering a constantly broke demon, is because she's concerned about Jahy's wellbeing, and when situations get serious enough that even Jahy breaks down, Ryou drops the attitude and comforts her.
  • No Full Name Given: Her and her sister's family name hasn't been revealed, and both of their names weren't revealed initially.
  • Not So Above It All: After having a brief falling out with her sister, she chooses to stay with Jahy, who wound up kicking her out because she can't clean or cook.
  • Only Sane Woman: Unlike her older sister, she does not put up with Jahy's antics and is less patient when dealing with her.
  • Sitcom Arch-Nemesis: With Jahy whenever she arrives to collect the rent.
  • Tomboy: Implied Trope, especially related to how she and Jahy treat each other. She's also markedly tomboyish compared to her sister.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: With Jahy. Despite their hostility with each other whenever it comes to Jahy refusing to pay her rent, it is clear that Ryou does actually care about her even if she will not admit it. Ryou and Jahy also have very similar personalities and pampered backgrounds.

    Druj
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/druj.png
Voiced by: Kana Hanazawa (Japanese), Monet Lerner (English)

Jahy's masochistic former right-hand who was also cast into the Earth after the destruction of the Demon Realm. She owns a financial consultancy and is extremely wealthy.

  • All of the Other Reindeer: Druj was avoided by many in the Dark Realm due to her charm powers.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: The reason she loves Jahy. Due to being avoided in the Dark Realm, Druj cast aside her powers, making her almost disappear. Before that could happen, Jahy told her to come work for her instead.
  • Berserk Button: DO NOT even sit close to Jahy, dare to change her name or give her an order.
  • Big Damn Heroes: When Jahy is overwhelmed by the Being of Light, she arrives just in time to save her.
  • Charm Person: Her power allows her to control others' hearts. It's implied that from time to time she uses this on humans, and may be one of the factors on her preternatural financial success.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Druj so strongly worships and adores Jahy that she views herself as the only person worthy of Jahy's attention. The sight of anybody else getting close enough that it looks like they might steal her "#1 follower" spot makes her go slightly Yandere and try to Murder the Hypotenuse, such as the case of Kyouko stating how she is Jahy's "Best Friend", to which both of them get into a verbal fight over who is closer to Jahy before deciding to take their fight somewhere more secluded to properly duke it out. The results were inconclusive and every following meeting they aggressively compete for Jahy's attention.
  • Ditzy Genius: As often noted by Jahy, while she has impressive social skills and tactical acumen that allow her to accomplish impressive feats both in finances and gem-gathering, she's such a hopeless masochist with fervent loyalty to Jahy that she completely fails to comprehend common sense or notice contextual clues, especially all the blatant hints at how far Jahy has fallen from her number two status.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: Makes a brief appearance in the background of the first episode riding in the back of a very long limo.
  • Elegant Gothic Lolita: Her "demonic form" outfit looks like a very frilly gothic lolita-style maid outfit, which fits for a dedicated Hyper-Competent Sidekick like Druj.
  • Foil: To Kyoko; like her, they are both fiercely devoted to Jahy whilst also being Too Kinky to Torture. However, even when Druj still served under Jahy, she nevertheless had companionship/love in the form of Jahy's treatment of her. Kyoko, on the other hand, had a Friendless Background with no signs of having a family even, and is ignorant of social cues. Of course, Druj and Kyoko can't stand each other.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: If you pause during episode 1, you will see her riding a long limo. In episode 2, you can see her full alias: Nana Dojima.
  • Ham-to-Ham Combat: Her shouting matches with Kyoko often devolve into this, with each woman claiming they're the only one worthy of Jahy and often competing with each other such as seeing who can collect more mana crystals.
  • Hiding Behind Your Bangs: Her bangs are styled to cover half her face, representing both the skill with which she blends into human society and how in the past she would act as Jahy's shadow, "peeking out" when needed to aid Jahy however she could.
  • Hyper-Competent Sidekick: Played with. Druj was Jahy's underling and is much more competent in the human world, though this was previously overshadowed in the Demon Realm due to Jahy's powers. Druj still respects Jahy, although this is based on a misunderstanding perpetrated by Jahy. Jahy gets away with it because Poor Communication Kills and because Druj always gravitates towards conclusions that make her happy.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Since Jahy's pride prevents her from revealing how she's in Perpetual Poverty, Druj near-constantly is obliviously insulting her by treating being rich and successful as no big deal because she believes Jahy is good enough that she's even richer and more successful than her.
  • Insecure Love Interest: It's one-sided Ship Tease at best, but Poor Communication Kills due to Jahy's lies and Jahy treating her more leniently puts Druj in something of an existential crisis, wondering where exactly she stands in Jahy's circle with her getting human subordinatesnote  and her not treating her like she used tonote .
  • Ironic Name: In Zoroastrian mythology, her name means "deceit/disorder".note  However, Druj herself is honest to a fault and has her life completely together. Jahy, on the order hand, fits the description perfectly, since she's a mess and lies her ass out to impress Druj.
  • Irony: Her and Jahy's positions are now completely reversed: while Jahy is suffering in her attempts at making ends meet, Druj became very rich. Though she still felt that she was grossly behind on collecting shards of the mana crystals... despite having literal truckloads of them at her disposal.
  • Near-Death Experience: In the Demon Realm, Druj almost threw away her demon gem due to people avoiding her. This caused her to almost disappear.
  • Power Gives You Wings: She can manifest a pair of wings in her true form.
  • Psycho Lesbian: She is completely devoted to Jahy and nearly kills others who she felt wronged her.
  • Secretly Wealthy: Played with. It's not quite known how she's so exorbitantly wealthy, but it's implied that it's due to the fact that Jahy was so hard on her back at the Dark Realm, making Druj a preternaturally industrious individual.
  • Single-Target Sexuality: Her life literally revolves around Jahy.
  • Sitcom Arch-Nemesis: She fights with Kyouko over Jahy's affections.
  • Too Kinky to Torture: Jahy making her feel like garbage and using her like furniture was something she greatly loved back in the Demon Realm. Naturally when Jahy started to develop a conscience, she gradually grew increasingly disturbed by her former servant's masochism, while on the flipside Druj grows increasingly concerned that Jahy is losing her edge by being around humans because she isn't as abusive as she used to be, showing particular worry anytime Jahy is actually nice to her.
  • Undying Loyalty: Druj wholeheartedly worships Jahy, seeing her not only as the pinnacle of a true demon, but as the woman who rescued her from a life of depression and gave meaning to her existence. Jahy has come to feel terrified at disappointing her servant's loyalty by revealing how she's not strong anymore and has lost her edge.
  • Yandere: She is horrifically obsessed with Jahy. She almost kills Jahy's boss for "blaspheming" her name by nicknaming Jahy "Hii-chan," and nearly flips her lid on the Magical Girl sitting closely to Jahy.

    Saurva
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/saurva_anime.png
Voiced by: Mikako Komatsu (Japanese), Brittany Lauda (English)

A demon envious of Jahy who wishes to defeat her and become the new number two.

  • Affectionate Nickname: "Sa-chan" by the boss.
  • Ambiguously Gay: While she's never shown interacting with males enough to hint at her opinion on them, ever since she first met and was comforted by the Owner, she's developed a strong liking of the woman that is heavily implied to be more than just friendly. In fact, she outright enters a state of euphoric bliss following her bathhouse trip thanks to slipping on soap and landing her head in the Owner's big, soft breasts.
  • Bifauxnen: She resembles a Pretty Boy.
  • Butt-Monkey: An even bigger one than Jahy. She is almost constantly humiliated and her plans often backfire.
  • Failure Is the Only Option: She manages to be even more failure-prone than Jahy, since not only is her sole goal of usurping Jahy to become a "crueler" ruler destined to always fail by way of Laser-Guided Karma, she's such an extreme example of a Minion with an F in Evil that all of her efforts to be bad end up turning into cases of doing good instead.
  • Hartman Hips: It's subtle, but a close look at her uniform makes it clear that her hips are wider than her torso. Becomes more clear primarily in the finale episode where she is taking part in a ceremonial festival.
  • Horned Humanoid: In a chapter of the manga, she is seen with horns in the first panel.
  • Irony: One of her chapters has her monologuing as a villain... while being a good samaritan. She even attracts the Being of Light who briefly empowers her.
  • Limited Wardrobe: Regardless of the situation, she always wears her military-like regalia.
  • Mad Scientist: She's an incredibly skilled potion-maker who is capable of concocting mixtures with a variety of impressive effects, but her envious obsession with usurping Jahy causes all of her attempts at using said potions on Jahy to heavily backfire on her, such as accidentally drinking her dog transformation mixture and being played with by Jahy herself.
  • Meaningful Name: She's named after the Zoroastrian demon of oppression and misrule. She's definitely trying to live up to it, by way of attempting to usurp Jahy as Dragon-in-Chief out of a belief she'd be a more effectively evil ruler, but she never manages to get far in her efforts.
  • Minion with an F in Evil: While she is always planning devious ways to replace Jahy, in her actual actions she is just a good person who goes around helping people with little thought of reward.
  • Mistaken Identity: She was initially unaware Jahy has two forms, thinking Jahy's child form was just a child who resembled Jahy.
  • Nice Girl: She's an absolute sweetheart, even though she's technically "villainous", and much despite the fact that her efforts serve to undermine and humiliate Jahy, albeit unsuccessfully.
  • No Poker Face: Ryou finds her entirely too easy to read in a game of Old Maid.
  • Poke the Poodle: When she attempts to ruin Jahy's reputation by turning into her and deliberately making blunders, her imagination only stretches as far as not paying her rent, sitting on the table rather than the chair, and skipping out on the tab. Jahy did worse things in the Demon Realm as a matter of course.
  • Shapeshifting Excludes Clothing: One of Saurva's plots against Jahy had her create a potion that would turn the drinker into a dog, intending on tricking Jahy into drinking it and ordering her around... only to mistake it for green tea she made and drink it herself, turning into a dog. By the end of her misadventure, which includes an encounter with the dog she accidentally grew, Jahy playing with her, and Ryou giving her an umbrella, the potion wears off and she's left naked in the rain.
  • Spell My Name With An S: The scanlations give her name as Salwa, while the anime gives her name as Saurva.
  • Tsurime Eyes: Contributing to her bifauxnen appearance, and representing her prideful self-image.
  • Unknown Rival: Despite her beliefs, Jahy had no recollection of who she was.

The destroyer of the Demon Realm. Originally an ordinary human girl, some enigmatic force came to her in her near-death and offered her power if she would destroy the mana crystals. Obnoxiously enthusiastic, eager to please, and clingy, she has since became Jahy's self-proclaimed best friend much to her chagrin. Also became unofficial roommates with Maou/the Demon Lord.

  • Ambiguously Gay: After befriending Jahy, Kyoko becomes completely devoted to her to the point where she fights with Druj over her.
  • Born Unlucky: A good part of why she's so unfazed by the abusive, potentially lethal jinx effect of a human "owning" a mana crystal is the fact that life already chose her as its Cosmic Plaything, not only having zero luck in forming any kind of relationship, but often being struck with painful misfortune, so adding more on top of that, even disregarding the enhanced toughness that comes with being a magical girl, is something she saw as no big deal if it meant having a purpose to fill the void in her heart.
  • The Cat Came Back: Following Jahy offering to become her First Friend, Kyoko becomes so utterly obsessed with her that any time she's not at school is spent hanging around Jahy, something that greatly annoys the demon, since she manages to act more aggressively clingy than the already somewhat annoying Druj, but Jahy can't do anything about it since breaking their friendship might send the magical girl off the deep end into resuming her antagonism towards Jahy.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Due to Jahy being her Only Friend, Kyouko is possessively obsessed with Jahy, with the very idea of Jahy not liking her sending her into a terrifyingly dark mood that makes Jahy afraid to deny her beliefs that they're best buds. As a consequence, she strongly dislikes Druj for her efforts to separate her from Jahy, and every time the two cross paths, Kyouko puts in a lot of effort to rub it in the demoness' face how "close" she and Jahy are, which always makes Druj's blood boil.
  • Dark Magical Girl: While her costume and equipment are standard Magical Girl, her background and personality are very much this: plagued with bad luck, isolated with no family or friends, lacking social skills, and becoming a magical girl in misguided pursuit of connection with others. To top it off, Jahy ultimately defeats her by offering to be her friend.
  • Desperately Looking for a Purpose in Life: The reason as to why she is still bent on obtaining the mana crystals despite the misfortune they bring is because she initially had no other purpose prior to becoming a Magical Girl. While she suffers the consequences of having the gems in her possession, in her crazed mind, it gives her meaning by taking the weight of the mana crystals on her shoulders.
  • Determinator: She's comically unfazed by the bad luck incurred onto her by the mana crystals, showing that she's extremely strong and resilient even when she's not using her powers. Girl's made of iron, helped by how she's stated that she endured terrible luck long before becoming a magical girl, so she was perfectly suited for the job.
  • Does Not Know Her Own Strength: She completely crushes a water bottle Jahy throws at her, and later when she ends up working alongside Jahy, she somehow manages to break the plates.
  • Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": She spent almost the entire early story only ever being called the "magical girl", with a single mention of her given name Kyoko when Jahy infiltrated her school. It's not until shortly after her sorta Heel–Face Turn (given Jahy is technically a Villain Protagonist) that her full name is revealed by the Owner when she decides to work at the Maou pub, and even then Jahy still prefers calling her "magical girl".
  • Friendless Background: Her life was so deprived of any form of companionship or love that she readily accepted being a magical girl just so she could have some purpose to fill the emotional void. Jahy offering to be her friend overjoys her enough that she drops her former antagonism towards the demon.
  • Hero Antagonist: The Magical Girl wholeheartedly views her destruction of the demon world and depriving the demons of their livelihood as a good thing, as she was brought to believe that the suffering of the world was caused by the demons and their magical gems, which results in her acting as a direct opponent of Jahy and her quest to regain her power. She drops the antagonism both because Jahy offered her the companionship she desired and because she realized demons aren't inherently and irredeemably evil.
  • Hero with Bad Publicity: When she first arrives at Jahy's apartment, she tries to forcefully take Jahy's mana crystal away. Though she claims to be a hero, when Ryou arrives, all she sees is a stranger assaulting Jahy. She ends up getting arrested by the police after Ryou calls them.
  • Huge Schoolgirl: She is quite tall and dwarfs most of the cast. When she first encountered Jahy in the latter's apartment, she was almost as tall as Jahy's doorway.
  • Just Following Orders: Why she destroyed the Demon Realm. After befriending Jahy, she comes to realize that she still did terrible things to the demons, even so.
  • Messianic Archetype: She has parallels with the Saoshyant, the Zoroastrian messiah. Her wand has a simplified Faravahar—the emblem of Zoroastrianism—on it, both are associated with light/sun-like, and Kyouko destroys the demon world just as the Saoshyant is prophesied to destroy all evil produced by the Druj (the corruption of the righteous order). Also deconstructed in that her taking all the mana crystals is done largely because she had no other purpose in life and that she'd willfully shoulder all the weight of the mana crystals despite the misfortune they cause.
  • Nice Girl: To a fault, to the point that she's an Extreme Doormat, and sometimes by choice. She doesn't have a mean bone in her body, but she's basically an overeager brute.
  • Power Dyes Your Hair: Her hair turns from black to blonde after transforming.
  • Power Makes Your Hair Grow: Inverted; as a civilian she has long hair in a ponytail, but her hair becomes a good deal shorter as a magical girl.
  • Sitcom Arch-Nemesis: With Druj over Jahy's affections.
  • Too Kinky to Torture: Due to being Born Unlucky and Desperately Seeking A Purpose In Life, she's gone through so much painful and near-lethal misfortune that it not only doesn't faze her anymore, she actually outright embraces and looks forward to experiencing it if doing so means she's shouldering the "burden" of the mana crystals and having a meaning to her life. Once she becomes Jahy's friend she switches gears to bearing through both the misfortune of the gems and Jahy's own misfortunate situation if it means being close to Jahy. Her being so broken freaks out Jahy immensely, especially once Kyoko latches onto her as a "friend".
  • Trauma Button: Due to Jahy being her First Friend after countless years of a Friendless Background, any time Jahy says or implies they aren't actually friends causes Kyoko to be filled with such intense despair that it terrifies Jahy about what she might do, forcing her to concede to Kyoko's belief that they are indeed friends at least technically.
  • Undying Loyalty: After their final encounter, Kyoko decides to become Jahy's friend and becomes psychotically devoted to her, much to the number 2 of the Demon Realm's chagrin.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifting: Her magical girl transformation. The only things that stay the same between her forms are her eyes (which is only obvious when in color) and the two moles beneath her left eye.

The Demon Lord.
  • Balloon Belly: Gets one from eating a large quantity of food during the celebration party Jahy throws.
  • Big Eater: She eats large portions of food such as when Jahy decided to commemorate her resurrection by throwing a party. She also decides to stay with the Magical Girl largely because she gives her food.
  • Genius Loci: She's not simply the ruler of the demon realm, but in fact the living embodiment of the demon realm itself, with the entire place being formed and shaped by her will. With her "heart" shattered into millions of mana crystals, the demon realm vanished with her. Gathering enough mana crystals for her to manifest also causes the surrounding area to start warping into a new demon realm, making it very apparent how closely tied the existence of the realm is to Maou's magical presence.
  • Hades Shaded: Has tanned skin, in contrast to her (presumably) light-aligned sister who's very pale skinned.
  • Horned Humanoid: Two curving horns, one each side of her head.
  • Magical Barefooter: She's a supernatural being whose attire has no footwear. Crosses into Barefoot Loon given that she also seems a bit off.
  • Make My Monster Grow: She grows to titanic size (to the point that most buildings barely reach her knees) in other to battle the Being of Light, who does the same. Though according to Jahy, it's not that she grows, but that's her true size.
  • No Poker Face: Inverted; Jahy can't read her expressions in Old Maid at all.
  • Pretty Freeloaders: She's shamelessly hedonistic and her main trait is to be a cute-looking, mooching food vacuum. Her presence has represented significant losses of resources for Jahy (whose resources are scarce to begin with) and the Magical Girl (who isn't any better off).
  • The Quiet One: She's not mute since she often makes wordless noises, and she's definitely not The Speechless since she actually said Jahy's name once, but in almost all of her appearances she never says even a small sentence, mostly communicating through wordless murmuring or body language. However, flashbacks in the manga show she was capable of talking in full sentences before the Demon Realm's destruction.
  • She Is the King: She's referred to as the "Demon King" or "Demon Lord", but appears as a cute, long-haired young girl.
  • Sleep-Mode Size: Just like with Jahy, the scattering of the mana crystals has resulted in her taking on a much more childlike form, and unlike Jahy, since her power is directly proportional to the concentration of mana crystals, she couldn't regain her adult form even if she cared enough to want to.
  • Suddenly Voiced: While she does say Jahy's name once, Maou had never spoken for the duration of the series. That changes in Chapter 76 when, after absorbing the gems Druj collected, she cryptically says it was not enough to complete the reconstruction of the Demon Realm.
  • The Thing That Would Not Leave: As a result of the fact that her existence is strongly connected to her mana crystals, Kyoko having gathered so many through her "work" as a magical girl they turned her house into an Eldritch Location means that once she manifested there, Kyoko is near-incapable of making her actually leave, with the only reason she even gets out being random whims, only to come back and resume eating all of the food in the house.

Voiced by: Yui Ogura (Japanese), Brooklyn Wade (English)

A young girl who is Jahy's best human friend who helps her with finding the mana crystals.

  • Best Friend: She's Jahy's most precious friend and she's dear to the demoness to an extent that she doesn't show towards anyone else. If something's not right with Kokoro, it's not right with Jahy as a result.
  • Children Are Innocent: She is a good-natured girl, not flinching when Jahy outright tells her that she came from the Demon Realm.
  • Informed Attribute: In her anime introduction, she says she's really clumsy and keeps getting hurt all over. She does not show any sign of clumsiness before that and this background apparently only serves as an explanation for why she has plasters on her.
  • Morality Pet: She's such a consistent Nice Girl towards Jahy, not only never manipulating or tricking Jahy into things but playing along with her spiels about being a powerful demon, that Kokoro ends up being the only person Jahy consistently shows her best Hidden Heart of Gold qualities.
  • Nice Girl: Fittingly enough for a girl named "heart", she doesn't have a single mean or manipulative bone in her body, forming a strong and close friendship with Jahy from the moment they first met.
  • No Full Name Given: She's introduced early on by her given name Kokoro, and her full name isn't revealed until more than forty chapters later.
  • Satellite Character: From the moment she's introduced, every one of her appearances in the story involve being around Jahy, and no matter what other characters she meets it always ends up relating back to her friendship with Jahy in some way.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Inverted, very heartwarmingly. By helping a certain random girl she just meets, she unwittingly touches Jahy's heart immensely, more than Jahy would ever admit to.

    The Being of Light
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kyokos_master.png
True form
Voiced by: Akari Kitou (Japanese), Celeste Perez (English)

A mysterious figure shrouded in light who was responsible for the creation of the Magical Girl and seeks the mana crystals for unknown reasons.

  • Big Bad: She was the one who made Kyoko into a magical girl and is responsible for the destruction of the Dark Realm and Jahy's current position. She also sought to collect the mana crystals for herself.
  • Conditional Powers: Can only manifest physically when she's near Owner.
  • Easily Forgiven: When she explained to her sister the reason behind her actions, Maou forgives her. However, Jahy still holds a grudge.
  • Exotic Eye Designs: Cross-shaped pupils.
  • Forgiven, but Not Forgotten: Jahy has made it clear that, despite everyone else's forgiveness, she is still furious with the Being of Light for destroying the Demon Realm over a petty fight between siblings and being the cause of her hardships and sorrows on Earth.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: While she's the Big Bad of the story, she initially stayed in the background and delegated the antagonistic role to her empowered Magical Girls. When her most capable servant (Kyoko) changes sides to aid the demons, she can't find any decent replacements, and her attempt to empower and control Owner fails, she decides enough is enough and reveals her true appearance before directly attacking Jahy, elevating herself to full Big Bad status.
  • Horned Humanoid: As part of mirroring Maou-sama.
  • Light Is Not Good: She's a being of light that is constantly searching for more people to make into magical girls to find mana crystals, but she operates on 'ends justifies the means' thinking (collect the mana crystals to stop misfortune, even though they're someone else's), and isn't very good with being called out or refused, eventually lashing out in anger.
  • No Name Given: Not named until Chapter 67/Episode 19, where she gives her name as Su.
  • Poor Communication Kills: The manga's chief conflict came as a result of a sibling fight between her and Maou. She created the Magical Girl as a means of checking up on her big sister, but the Magical Girl proved to be more powerful than she realized which led to the Dark Realm's destruction.
  • The Reveal: She's Maou-sama's little sister.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Instead of taking Jahy and Druj head-on, she hightails it out of there.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Her Being of Light form is near-identical to Maou-sama's Demon Lord form, except she's bathed in light and Maou-sama is shrouded in darkness. Similarly, in 'demon' form she looks near-identical to Maou-sama aside from their differing color schemes.
  • Super-Empowering: Being relatively powerless in her default state, she mainly relies on empowering others as magical girls to do what she needs.
  • Technicolor Eyes: Pink irises.
