The Tribes

    Airai
Color/ namesake: orange/ Airai, a Palauan province
Members (start): Alexis Jones, Chet Welch, Erik Reichenbach, Jason Siska, Joel Anderson, Kathy Sleckman, Mary Sartain, Mikey Bortone, Natalie Bolton, Tracy Hughes-Wolf
Members (swap): Alexis Jones, Eliza Orlins, James Clement, Jason Siska, Jonathan Penner, Kathy Sleckman, Natalie Bolton, Parvati Shallow

The "fans" tribe.

  • A House Divided: They already had two shelters at the beginning of the game: one for the older people (Chet, Tracy, Joel, and Kathy) and one for everyone else. This cost them numbers by the time the merge hit.
  • Ascended Fanboy: The original lineup. While most Survivor seasons since the sixth have diehard fans in the lineup, they're usually only picked once per cast.
    • According to an AMA with Kathy Sleckman; Alexis Jones, Chet Welch, Natalie Bolton were in fact, recruited by the show and unfamiliar with it prior to playing.
  • Divided We Fall: Once the tribe swap hit, they were closer to particular favorites than any fan outside their given alliance.
  • Dwindling Party: The shuffled Airai is notable in that it was dominating the challenges yet ended up with the same number of Malakal members at the merge because of evacuations.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: Despite the internal struggle, they did a decent job at challenges before the tribe swap.

    Malakal
Color/ namesake: purple/ Malakal Harbor, Palau
Members (start): Amanda Kimmel, Ami Cusack, Cirie Fields, Eliza Orlins, James Clement, Jonny Fairplay, Jonathan Penner, Ozzy Lusth, Parvati Shallow, Yau-Man Chan
Members (swap): Amanda Kimmel, Ami Cusack, Chet Welch, Cirie Fields, Erik Reichenbach, Joel Anderson, Ozzy Lusth, Tracy Hughes-Wolf

The "favorites" tribe.

  • The Bus Came Back: The original lineup.
  • My Greatest Second Chance: Played straight by, at least, the final three. And despite placing in the same rank, James Clement arguably had a better game here.
  • Team Spirit: Zig-Zagged. While they can easily function as a team in challenges, they can blindside each other with ease.

    Dabu
Color/ namesake: green/ the sound the orcs make in Warcraft
Members: Alexis Jones, Amanda Kimmel, Cirie Fields, Eliza Orlins, Erik Reichenbach, James Clement, Jason Siska, Natalie Bolton, Ozzy Lusth, Parvati Shallow

The merged tribe

  • A House Divided: But unlike most seasons, the divisions were more complex than "who started on what tribe".
  • As Long as It Sounds Foreign: Subverted. Erik Reichenbach told everyone it was Micronesian for "good", but confirmed afterward that he was just hiding the fact it was a Warcraft allusion. It's worth noting Erik said he and his friends from back home would use "dabu" as personal slang for "stupid".

Finalists

    1st. Parvati Shallow
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/s16_parvati_shallow.jpg
Age/ home/ season: 25/ Los Angeles, California/ 13. Cook Islands
Tribe: Malakal -> Airai -> Dabu

Parvati would return for a third time on Heroes Vs. Villains

  • Action Girl: Has a penchant for winning endurance challenges.
  • Affably Evil: Is a villain in Survivor typology (due to her manipulative tendencies), but is usually quite approachable.
  • The Bad Guy Wins: She, and the Black Widow Brigade by extension, are the primary bad guys of the season. They end up dominating the game post-merge.
  • The Chessmaster: Great at manipulating the tribes for her benefit.
  • Femme Fatale: Her casting archetype, which she is the paradigm for
  • From Nobody to Nightmare: Parvati was the replacement for Candice Woodcock, who declined the chance to play on this season in order to finish medical school. She was considered one of the most controversial casting choices due to her lack of notoriety, with it being somewhere along the lines of Amber being cast for All-Stars. Everyone expected her to just be another pretty face. Boy, were we wrong.
  • History Repeats: Once again a relatively irrelevant player who finished in 6th in her first season returns for a second game and won.
  • I Gave My Word: She had promised Natalie that she would protect her, which is why Alexis was to be voted off at the final 6.
  • Lovable Alpha Bitch: Well liked by some tribemates (and many fans), regardless of her "villain" status.
  • Manipulative Bitch: So many times. One instance was pulling in Alexis and Natalie while at Airai, which turned herself into the binding knot of a five person alliance (with Cirie and Amanda on the other side), giving her a huge amount of security in the late game.
  • Meaningful Name: Subverted. Parvati is anything but shallow, but she allows herself to be perceived this way to lower her threat level.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Quite an attractive woman, and she uses it to her advantage.
  • My Greatest Second Chance: After placing sixth in Cook Islands, comes back and wins the million.
  • Ship Tease: Heavily with James, being lumped in with Ozzy and Amanda as the couples. Later on with Natalie as the Black Widow Brigade solidifies.
  • Sole Survivor
  • The Tease: What she was mainly known for.

    2nd. Amanda Kimmel
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/s16_amanda_kimmel.jpg
Age/ home/ season: 23/ Los Angeles, California/ 15. China
Tribe: Malakal -> Dabu

Amanda would return for a third time on Heroes vs Villains.

  • The Ace: Cirie was great socially and the primary jury threat. Parvati was also good socially and somewhat decent at challenges. All of these applied to Amanda as well, which made her a very big target and is one of the reasons why the brigade considered voting her off near the end.
  • Action Girl: Of the Black Widow Brigade, she was the best at challenges.
  • Aloof Dark-Haired Girl: As in China, she can sometimes be socially disconnected from those around her. This is reinforced by her naturally distant, sleepy-looking eyes that make her look detached (even when she’s engaged).
  • Always Second Best: Amanda ended up being a finalist for the second season in a row, yet didn't get the win.
  • Dull Eyes of Unhappiness: While this is consistent in all of her appearances, Micronesia was the only season where her eyes's lack of natural shine is directly referenced. Natalie even makes a mean-spirited comment accusing her of being simple-minded because of her sleepy eyes.
  • Dull Surprise: Managed to look completely unfazed by multiple twists and blindsides. Her flat eyes don't help.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Began lobbying for Alexis' head on the merge episode because she started getting close to Ozzy.
  • Face–Heel Turn: With all the manipulations, blindsiding and backstabbing, it's a genuine wonder why she wasn't with Parvati on the Villain's side on Heroes vs Villains.
  • I Surrender, Suckers: After finding an immunity idol without anyone else's knowledge but Parvati's.
  • Morton's Fork: The final immunity challenge. If she lost, there was a good chance that she won't be taken to the finale. When she won, she has to pick between two jury threats and deal with losing the vote of whoever she didn't pick.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Former Miss Montana, and you can tell.
  • My Greatest Second Chance: Finished third in China, finishes second in Micronesia. This season is also regarded as Amanda's best.
  • Older and Wiser: Her game is sharper and more developed than in China.
  • Plucky Girl: Exemplified during Alexis' blindside when everyone except for Parvati made it clear that they wanted her gone.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Once again, she butchers the Final Tribal Council so bad she ends up losing votes.
  • Ship Tease: With Ozzy. He even proclaims his love for her at FTC, and they started dating after the show
  • Statuesque Stunner: Stands at least a head over most of the female castaways.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Compare to China, where her most strategic move was voting out James and her claim to fame was her athletic ability. Here, she shows off her strategic chops and is involved in the planning process for several blindsides.
  • Wounded Gazelle Gambit: She guilts Erik into taking her to the award, calling him a bad friend for trying to get her voted off.

Jury Members

    3rd. Cirie Fields
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/s16_cirie_fields.jpg
Tribe: Malakal -> Dabu
Age/ home/ job: 37/ Norwalk, Connecticut/ 12) Panama

Cirie would return for Heroes vs Villains and Game Changers.

  • Anti Heroine: Only truly mean in her voting plans.
  • Badass Boast: And Cirie's playing style in a nutshell, to boot;
"My mother always told me 'you may not be able to beat 'em with these all the time,'" (she points to her muscles), "'but you can always beat 'em with this.'" (she points to her brain)
  • The Chessmaster / The Strategist: This is best exemplified by her spearheading the Joel boot. Joel and Ozzy agreed that they would vote off Chet because of challenge strength. However, Cirie knew if Chet was the precedent for challenge strength then she would be the next to go. She then went around hyping Joel as a power player, and convincing everyone he'd be a threat far earlier than he could be. Joel got eliminated that night.
  • Diabolus ex Machina: All of Cirie's plans revolved around getting in a tight enough group that would bring her to the final 3, which everyone assumed would be the endgame. When it was revealed that Micronesia would instead revert back to a final 2, Cirie knew that her chances to win had been shot, as Parvati and Amanda had a closer relationship with each than with her and knew that Cirie was a big jury threat.
  • Manipulative Bitch: Take a look at the absolute delight she gets from tricking Erik.
  • My Greatest Second Chance: Finishes a place higher than she did in Panama, playing a more aggressive style against tougher competition.
  • Older and Wiser: The most evident example, and she already did well last time.
  • Shipper on Deck: Ships Amanda and Ozzy, expecting little Ozzlets to start scampering around.
  • The Smart Girl: The head strategist of the female alliance, and effective in that position.
  • Team Mom: Has a motherly personality and is the oldest person left post-merge.
  • Took a Level in Badass: She already showed strategic chops in Panama, but in this season she was one of the largest masterminds in the game.
  • Verbal Tic: Her habit of laughing her way through confessionals returns for this season, primarily in the first half.
  • Woman Behind the Woman: A big part of her strategy this season is proposing an incredibly audacious plan (blindsiding Ozzy, suggesting that Erik could give the Immunity Necklace away) and then letting another member of her alliance come off like the one who spearheaded the idea (Parvati on the former, Natalie on the latter).
  • Underestimating Badassery: Anyone who watched Panama can tell you two things about her: that she was someone who got off the couch to have an adventure and that she's a master strategist who shouldn't be taken to the endgame. She got her tribe to focus on the first aspect and to lower her threat level.

    4th. Natalie Bolton
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/s16_natalie_bolton_1.jpg
Tribe: Airai
Age/ home/ job: 32/ West Hollywood, California/ personal trainer

  • A Day in the Limelight: Jason's boot episode gave her the most screen time and she definitely made the most of it.
  • Ascended Extra: For most of the season she was barely even shown, but when Jason's boot episode came around, she suddenly turned into a cross between a Femme Fatale and a heinous Deadpan Snarker.
  • Chronic Backstabbing Disorder: The blindsides of both Jason and Erik both hinged on her perceived loyalties to them, since they were both fans.
  • Cute and Psycho: Her demeanor during her scant confessionals, including flossing with Jason's jugular and wishing their hen would cut the head off of a rooster after banging him, makes her come across as this.
  • Large Ham: During the last few episodes, Natalie turned over-the-top catty, leading to her famous jugular confessional.
  • Last of Her Kind: The highest ranking fan.
  • Manipulative Bitch: Successfully tricks both Jason and Erik into not taking advantage of their respective immunities and booting them out.
  • Ms. Fanservice: One of the most attractive of the fans.
  • Non-Action Guy: She was never close to winning individual immunity and had a tendency to sit out reward challenges. The only time she wore the necklace on her neck was when she tricked Erik into giving it to her.
  • Out of Focus: For the first ten episodes.
  • Ship Tease: Quite a lot with Parvati as the near the endgame. Aside from her bizarre final tribal council speech, Parv gives her a kiss after Erik gets blindsided.
  • Smug Snake: She really revels in the idea of Siska's betrayal.
  • Troll: Says that she was always going to vote for Parvati and her entire final tribal appearance was just to make everyone feel incredibly uncomfortable.
  • Wounded Gazelle Gambit: Part of what convinced Erik was that Natalie was definitely the next to go if she didn't have immunity, and that she'd felt hurt because he didn't send her to reward or exile as he had promised before.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: Once it was down to her and the three Favorites in the final four, you have three guesses to figure out who went out next. The first two don't count.

    5th. Erik Reichenbach
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/0a3d4b2864e90f4a53c4c5f5af42ed84.jpg
Tribe: Airai -> Malakal -> Dabu
Age: 22/ Ypsilanti, Michigan/ ice cream scooper

Erik would later return for Caramoan, but this time as a favorite.

  • Action Hero: His skill in challenges allowed him to survive for a while even after the Black Widow Brigade took control of the game.
  • Ascended Fanboy: The poster-child for Survivor. Of all the "Fans", he's the most starstruck.
  • Epic Fail: His elimination.
  • Genre Blind: You would think that such an Ascended Fanboy as Erik would know better than to completely trust anyone (especially when everyone else is in an alliance). Upon his elimination, he even notes that he should have known better.
  • Fan Boy: Of Ozzy, and to a lesser extent, the favorites in general. Possibly the reason why he was dumb enough to trust Cirie, who was one of the Favorites, when she suggested giving Immunity to Natalie.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: A very kind person with tangled blond hair.
  • Hero with Bad Publicity: Erik is a kind man, but Amanda went out of her way to paint him as a giant asshole in the eyes of the jury, which contributed to him wanting to redeem himself.
  • Honor Before Reason: Truly believed that, by rescuing Natalie, he would redeem himself in the eyes of the jury. The jury all find his actions astounding — astoundingly stupid, that is.
  • Humiliation Conga: The producers delighted in turning his final Tribal Council into this; they don't even bother to pretend there's any suspense in who's going out and instead show every single vote (with Parvati gloating over how dumb Erik is, Cirie busting out a Badass Boast, Natalie thanking Erik for the necklace, and Amanda just sort of dumbstruck with amusement). To make matters worse, James outright laughs at his decision to give away the necklace, and after Erik's voted out James actually speaks up (which jurors are not supposed to do unless prompted by Probst) to make a joke about no longer being the dumbest Survivor ever.
  • Idiot Hero: Took several things for granted, but giving the immunity away was the death knell for any intelligence he may have had.
  • Improbable Hairstyle: His increasingly tangled and lengthy blond hair.
  • Innocent Blue Eyes: Blue irises, and he gets rather infamously duped at the final five by being too trusting.
  • Ironic Echo: Amanda guilt-slings him, saying "It's too late for I'm sorry." He does it to her in his FTC speech when she attempts to apologize for hurting his feelings.
  • Meaningful Echo: A quick one, but Erik, after being eliminated, ran out of Tribal once his torch was extinguished, just as Ami did when she was eliminated. Erik was the next boot choice after Ami before the merge.
  • Nice Guy: He says he's kind of glad he went when he did during the reunion because he didn't want to have to go down a dark path just to win. Kathy even says that he doesn't have a mean bone in his body.
  • Poor Communication Kills: One of the ways the Brigade justified his elimination was that he went around trying to make alliances left and right.
  • Senseless Sacrifice: Gave up his immunity to show the jury he's a respectable guy. Guess who gets eliminated right then.
  • Shout-Out: Gets the post-merge tribe to be named "Dabu," a word used by orcs in Warcraft.
  • Stupid Good: See below.
  • Too Dumb to Live: He actually agreed to surrender his immunity at Tribal Council, which ironically was a scenario that played out on the second season of The Apprentice a few years earlier. The results for both were the same, and it shouldn't take you long to figure out what happened. This actually led to production going ahead and showing all the votes in the voting hut and the tribemates' comments prior to Jeff reading them, and it showed Erik getting the most to drive the point home; this editing otherwise only really happens on a few season DVDs and never on an episode's original airing.
  • Would Hit a Girl: Dragged Eliza around and gave Amanda an FU during an early challenge!

    6th. Alexis Jones
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/s16_alexis_jones.jpg
Tribe: Airai -> Airai -> Dabu
Age: 24/ Beverly Hills, California/ motiviational speaker

  • Hoist by Her Own Petard: Sent Amanda to Exile Island. Amanda used the clue there to set up Alexis's elimination
  • Nice Girl: Invoked, she is called this by the other castaways at one point.
  • Ms. Fanservice: While she doesn’t receive the same level of attention from the cameras as certain other examples, she’s definitely an attractive young woman.
  • Out-Gambitted: By Amanda's use of the idol.
  • Out of Focus: A minor example, but definitely compared to the other members of the "Black Widow Brigade". Unlike Natalie, also doesn't get focus as the season draws to a close.
  • Passionate Sports Girl: In the Survivor: Micronesia - TV Guide Preview show, she talked a lot about how much she loves football and playing sports.
  • The Rival: Amanda thought that Alexis was competing for Ozzy's affections/spot in his alliance.

    7th. James Clement (evacuated)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/s16_james_clement.jpg
Tribe: Malakal -> Airai -> Dabu
Age/ home/ season: 30/ Lafayette, Louisiana/ 15) China

  • The Big Guy: Just like in China, James is an incredible physical asset.
  • Catchphrase: Various permutations of "don't eat the apple.".
  • Game-Breaking Injury: Poor guy even had a better game this time around.
  • Heroic Build: The man is massive enough to rip trees out of the ground.
  • History Repeats: Is eliminated in seventh place, just like his previous season. At least it wasn't something he could have prevented.
  • Mr. Fanservice: Invoked by Parvati, who says flirting with him is easy because “he’s just so cute”.
  • My Greatest Second Chance: Finished the same place he did in China, but this time it was due to being taken out of the game for medical reasons rather than being blindsided at Final Tribal Council. Had it not been for his evacuation, he could've made it beyond seventh place.
  • Non-Gameplay Elimination: James was evacuated because of his finger getting an infection.
  • Older and Wiser
  • Self-Deprecation : After Erik gave his immunity necklace away, James made a Call-Back to his Epic Fail in China.
  • Story-Breaker Power: In one notable instance. His absurd physical strength allowed him to utterly break the challenge in episode 6. While the intent was to systematically move a series of platforms with team members on them to the finish line, James instead opted to simple pick it up on his own and carry it to end.
  • Tall, Dark, and Snarky

    8th. Jason Siska
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/jason_siska_225x300.jpg
Tribe: Airai -> Airai -> Dabu
Age: 22/ Fox River Grove, Illinois/ gymnastics coach

  • Action Hero: This is overpowered by his later episodes, but he was pretty much the primary reason Airai won any challenges prior to the swap. He also wasn't half bad at the individual challenges.
  • Always Someone Better: Post-merge, much was made of how much he wanted to compete against Ozzy. He ended up outlasting Ozzy in back-to-back immunity challenges and finished one spot above him.
  • Butt-Monkey: His last three episodes are pretty much an endless parade of the show mocking him.
  • Fan Boy: Of Ozzy, more than any other favorite.
  • Idiot Ball: In the span of a few episodes, he manages to become near-universally hated in his tribe, mistake a stick for the immunity idol, give up immunity to get everyone food and only escape elimination due to dumb luck, and then find a REAL idol, but still lose with it just like Ozzy did the EPISODE BEFORE.
  • Jerk Jock: Ostracized the older members, and stole palm fronds from their shelter. He's also a gymnastics instructor back home.
  • Too Dumb to Live: Somehow believes Ozzy's stick with a face is enough to be a hidden immunity idol. Comapare this to Bob's idol made with beads and sap, which actually looks really convincing.
  • Unknown Rival: To Ozzy, on account of being challenge beasts. But Jason never bothered to tell him outright.

    9th. Oscar "Ozzy" Lusth
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/s16_ozzy_lusth.jpg
Tribe: Malakal -> Malakal -> Dabu
Age/ home/ season: 26/ Los Angeles, California/ 13) Cook Islands

  • The Ace: One of the best athletes on the entire season (and across much of the show), to the point that Erik and Jason obsess over beating him.
  • Amazon Chaser: He found it really attractive that Amanda wrestled a four-foot shark.
  • Anguished Declaration of Love: In his jury speech.
  • Call-Back: He employed Yau-Man's strategy in Fiji brilliantly in this season.
  • Chick Magnet: Starts making out with Amanda by episode 2. Alexis also starts getting very close to him after the merge because of their time together on exile.
  • The Dreaded: The primary reason he was constantly targeted was because everyone thought they may not have a chance to eliminate one of the best physical players in the game.
  • Flipping the Bird: His first jury appearance began with him flipping the bird to the rest of the cast.
  • Intergenerational Friendship: With Yau-Man, albeit briefly.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He can be rather dismissive and entitled, but shows a good deal of affection to his friends. It's worth noting he was also targeted as a poplurity threat, too.
  • Mr. Fanservice
  • Ship Tease: With Amanda.
  • Shoot the Dog: He doesn't want to vote off Yau-Man and lobbied for him to stay, but he ultimately stuck with the majority to avoid being the odd man out.
  • Sore Loser: If his Ponderosa video and jury speech are any indications, he really didn't take his blindside well.
  • Tall, Dark, and Handsome
  • Tall Poppy Syndrome: A textbook case of why being amazing at challenges puts a target on your back before anyone else's.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: To Parvati at final jury, even refusing to let her talk to defend herself.

    10th. Eliza Orlins - Vanuatu
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/s16_eliza_orlins.jpg
Tribe: Malakal -> Airai -> Dabu
Age/ home/ season: 25/ New York, New York/ 9) Vanuatu

  • Foreshadowing: Wished that James and Ozzy would get sick and had to be evacuated from the game.
  • Jaw Drop: She reveled in Ozzy's blindside.
  • Kingmaker Scenario: At the final jury: The votes were cast 5-3. Natalie and Alexis both loved Parvati, Cirie felt betrayed by Amanda, and who knows why Jason voted the way he did. Meanwhile, James was best friends with Amanda, Ozzy was obsessed with her, and Erik wanted to see what happened if there was a tie. If Eliza voted for Amanda, there would indeed have been a tie, but she gave it to Parvati.
  • My Elimination is the beginning: Almost singlehandedly started Ozzy's fall.
  • Older and Wiser: Played smarter than in Vanuatu, particularly when it came to earning other player’s respect and forming alliances. That said, she wound up doing worse than last time.
  • The Perfectionist: Her casting archetype.
  • Plucky Girl: Pretty much fought for her spot on the jury since she was on the outs ever since the first episode.
  • Precision F-Strike: "It's just a fucking stick!"
  • Red Herring: Her getting sick in the early episodes seemed to have solidified her fate. It had nothing to do with her eventual elimination.
  • Taking You with Me: She found out about the fake idol too late, but makes the most of her doom.
Eliza:"If that's fake, then Ozzy must have the real one."
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Pretty much lambasts Amanda and Parvati for being the island Mean Girls during her final tribal council speech.

Voted Out

    11th. Ami Cusack
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/s16_ami_cusack.jpg
Tribe: Malakal -> Malakal
Age/ home/ season: 34/ Golden, Colorado/ 9) Vanuatu

  • Being Good Sucks: Tried to play a much nicer, more under-the-radar game this season. It ends with her just missing the merge and leaving in tears.
  • Broken Bird: Her friend had committed suicide prior to the season and she was still feeling its effects, which is why she was rather emotional during her boot.
  • Character Development: Amy was nicer and less of an Ice Queen.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Not to the extent of her first season, but still noticeable.
  • Older and Wiser: Showed more flexibility than her previous outing, being willing to shift alliances to progress.
  • Out of Focus: Compared to Vanuatu; she only really got screen time as part of the Jonathan/Ami/Yau-Man/Eliza alliance on Malakal.
  • Plucky Girl: Certainly put up a fight when she was on the outs with Malakal, though it wasn’t enough.
  • Power Hair
  • Took a Level in Kindness: Compare her controlling, Queen pin behaviour from her original season and her rather subdued nature here.

    12th. Tracy Hughes-Wolf
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/s16_tracy_hughes_wolf.jpg
Tribe: Airai -> Malakal
Age: 43/ Fredericksburg, Pennsylvania/ residential builder

  • The Chessmaster: She used her manipulations to convince the younger members to vote each other out, keeping her minority alliance safe. It shouldn't be understated how much she was screwed by the swap and put into a really bad position.
  • The Cobbler's Children Have No Shoes: Subverted. She was a residential builder by trade, yet the Airai group didn't have a shelter by Day 1. However, this was because Jason and the younger tribe members ignored everything she said. Thus, she built her own rather quickly.
  • Older Than She Looks: She looked pretty good for a then 43-year-old.
  • The Woman Behind the Man: Tracy was the one who was really calling the shots on Airai's elder alliance even though Joel was seen as the leader.
  • Worthy Opponent: To the Favorites. She and Joel were the first fans specifically taken out by them.

    13th. Kathleen "Kathy" Sleckman (quit)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/s16_kathy_sleckman.jpg
Tribe: Airai -> Airai
Age/ home/ job: 45/ Glen Ellyn, Illinois/ golf course vendor

  • All of the Other Reindeer: She lost both Tracy and Chet to the swap, which meant she had zero real friends on the new Airai tribe. Jonathan Penner did befriend her, but sadly, he soon had to be medevac'd.
  • Ascended Fangirl: Of all the "Fans", she's one of the few who has clearly watched every season.
  • Cloud Cuckoolander: She sometimes makes strange comments (see Innocently Insensitive below) and is a even bigger Survivor fangirl than the others, resulting in her coming off as somewhat eccentric.
  • Despair Event Horizon: Penner's evacuation marked a distinct turning point in Kathy's gameplay, leaving her a wreck. She says that Penner was her only genuine friend on the island when the rest treat her like an outcast. Coupled with the deplorable living conditions of the Airai island, she started having dark thoughts and even considered cutting her pinky off to get a medevac.
  • Innocently Insensitive: She makes weird comments about Chet's homosexuality and Tracy's implants, marking her as the "crazy woman" of the tribe. However, they become her closest friends as the season progresses.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: When asked a question about Mary before a tribal council, Kathy (who had spent majority of the last few days on Exile Island) asks "Mary who?". The viewers did not get to see much of Mary either.
  • Non-Gameplay Elimination: She quit, following a mental breakdown.

    14th. Chet Welch
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/s16_chet_welch.jpg
Tribe: Airai -> Malakal
Age: 48/ Ford City, Pennsylvania/ pageant coach

  • Butt-Monkey: Best exemplified in the episode 5 reward challenge.
  • Camp Gay
  • Friend to All Living Things: Or chickens, anyway.
  • The Load: The big reason he survived as long as he did was everyone wanting to use him as a pawn, something wannabe-strategists Mary, Mikey, and Joel could not be.
  • Manipulative Editing: According to Kathy, he was very helpful around camp, but was shown as a Lazy Bum on the show.
  • Nice Guy: One of the more patient contestants this season, which helped him stay longer than other weak players.
  • Suicide by Cop: Asked to be voted out after dealing with coral stuck in his foot.
  • That's Gotta Hurt: When he was dragged by Joel through one of the obstacle courses like he was an inanimate object.

    15th. Jonathan Penner (evacuated)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/s16_jonathan_penner.jpg
Tribe: Malakal -> Airai
Age/ home/ season: 45/ Los Angeles, California/ 13) Cook Islands]

Jonathan would return for a third round in 2012, in Survivor: Philippines.

  • Break the Haughty: The snarky, confident Penner is reduced to tears as he's pulled from the game to treat a life-threatening infection, hunched over sobbing as the boat leaves.
  • Character Development: From a guy with sarcastic, shifty guy who people didn't trust and switched alliances at the drop of a hat, to a guy who everyone trusted and looked up to.
  • Cool Old Guy: His snarky side is rather prominent, but he's rather affable and friendly towards everyone.
  • Deadpan Snarker
  • Determinator: Seriously injures a leg and in spite of this, helps his tribe win multiple challenges before he's forced to quit.
  • Game-Breaking Injury: At the first reward challenge of the tribe switch, he punctured the back of the knee. It would get infected and he was pulled of the game for life saving surgery.
  • I Coulda Been a Contender!: He was in a very good position on the new Airai tribe as they were strong and had yet to lose any challenges, but was pulled from the game.
  • Intergenerational Friendship: With Yau-Man.
  • Large Ham: "I MEAN, MY ASS!"
  • Non-Gameplay Elimination: Evacuated because of the Game-Breaking Injury above.
  • Odd Friendship: With Kathy, to the point of being the only one who would share Kathy's shelter.
  • Older and Wiser
  • Shipper on Deck: Ships Amanda and Ozzy.
  • Sitcom Arch-Nemesis: His relationship with Probst comes up again during one of the immunity challenges.

    16th. Joel Anderson

Tribe: Airai -> Malakal
Age/ home/ job: 32/ Avondale, Arizona/ firefighter

  • Accidental Misnaming: Ozzy accidentally calls him "Troy" during the tribal swap. Joel probably did not appreciate it.
  • The Big Guy/The Brute: The reason Ozzy chose him was to counteract James, who got swapped to Airai by fan Natalie.
  • Evil Counterpart: To James Clement, a returning favorite and another brick wall. Both weren't Gentle Giants by any stretch of the imagination; but James was more laid-back about his overall approach, while Joel was aggressive in challenges and brutal in his leadership.
  • Jerkass with a Heart of Gold/Everyone Has Standards: Downplayed, as the show wanted to build up to his animosity against the older tribe memebers, but he wasn't fond of how Mikey B. called the shots and immediately ostracized the older people. In his own words, when he turned on Mikey B., he would rather three people who were weak in challenges than one chaos maker.
    • He recalls that Jason would blow up on Chet for things and he'd call Chet over to just ignore Jason because he sucks.
  • Out-Gambitted: By Cirie and Tracy, who believed his scheming could send them home next.
  • The Plan: His plan to get rid of Mary, so he can undercut Mikey B.'s influence and soon send him home. Unfortunately for him, these two eliminations are all he got off the ground

    17th. Michael "Mikey B." Bortone

Tribe: Airai
Age/ home/ job: 34/ Los Angeles, California/ writer

  • Ascended Fanboy: Mikey been loyally watching since season 2
  • False Friend: Mikey B. attempted to invoke this against Joel but failed.
  • I Coulda Been a Contender!: In any other season, the duo of Mikey and Mary would have done fine. In the Fans tribe, he was outdone by the rest of his tribe wanting to pull off big moves, especially Joel and Tracy, who he also openly targeted.
  • Informed Ability: Was said to be a good asset for challenges, cited by Jason as a reason to keep him around. He's not particularly great, but maybe compared to Chet.
  • Jerkass: Once the tribes hit the beach, he immediately determined who are the most expendable members of the tribe and alienated them.
  • Leader Wannabe: Being a superfan, he wanted to be the big man and immediately tried placing himself in this position. This is what placed a target on his back.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: "Mikey B.", never "Michael" or even just "Mikey".
  • Out-Gambitted: By Joel, who wasn't even all that different.

    18th. Yau-Man Chan
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/s16_yau_man_chan_8.jpg
Tribe: Malakal
Age/ home/ season: 56/ Martina, California/ 14) Fiji

  • Cool Old Guy: Fairplay tries to take both individual immunity necklaces. Yau-man rams into him, takes both of the necklaces and gives one to Kathy.
  • I Coulda Been a Contender!: A strong competitor that reached the Fallen Angel stage on Fiji, eliminated early because of his reputation.
  • Intergenerational Friendship: With Jonny Fairplay, Jonathan, and Ozzy.
  • Kid-Appeal Character: Not physically strong and carried by other people in alliances, but uses his wits to one-up physical players and is nice enough to not have much of a target on his back. Well, not have a target on his back for his first tribal council.
  • Sudden Sequel Death Syndrome: Elimination in this case. Cirie pulled one over on him quite early into the game by convincing Parvati to vote Yau-Man out in exchange for joining her alliance. Keep in mind he made it to the final four last time.
  • The Smart Guy: Makes fire within the first thirty minutes upon landing on the beach, using his glasses and a drop of water.
  • Team Dad: As the oldest member on Malakal.
  • Worthy Opponent: The primary reason he was voted out instead of, say, Penner.

    19th. Mary Sartain
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/s16_mary_sartain.jpg
Tribe: Airai
Age/ home/ job: 29/ Emeryville, California/ real estate manager

  • Living Prop: "Mary Who?" indeed. It's doubly funny when one finds out that Mary rarely spoke to most of the tribe, and few really knew who she was.
  • Ms. Fanservice
  • Ship Tease: With Mikey B. The plan was to vote her out to undermine Mikey B's influence.

    20th. Jon "Jonny Fairplay" Dalton
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/s16_jon_dalton.jpg
Tribe: Malakal
Age/ home/ season: 33/ Los Angeles, California/ Pearl Islands

  • Affably Evil: Isn't as rude to the Favorites as he was to the Drakes.
  • Call-Back: References the "Dead Grandma" lie while working on the beach.
  • Character Development: A massive douche in his premiere season, comes back marginally more mellow and as a loving father. He messed with the others more like a prankster than a bully this time around, too.
  • Dead Star Walking: Heavily used to promote the season, one of the primary focuses of the first episode in terms of strategic play, and gone at the end of the very same episode.
  • For Want Of A Nail: The ramifications of his quit on Survivor history are massive, as he saved Parvati from being voted out first. Had Parvati been the first boot she never would have returned for Heroes vs Villains and the series would be without one of its most iconic and influential players. Furthermore, Fairplay himself likely would have ended up on Heroes vs Villains which would have radically changed the dynamic of that season.
  • Game-Breaking Injury: Confirmed in AMA the real reason he quit was because he was still feeling the after affects of Danny Bonaduce beating the shit out of him at the Fox Reality Awards. He also said the last straw was him seeing James Clement (returning right after the previous season) get painkillers and him being denied them.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He stated he quit to be with his pregnant wife. While he was ultimately lying about it being the reason, he talked up his family in the pregame and how it was the best thing that happened to him.
  • Large Ham: Came onto the show dressed as Jeff Probst and introduced himself to everyone by doing an impression of him.
  • Mauve Shirt: Literally (being placed on the purple-colored tribe) and figuratively (quite well-developed for a first boot).
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: Jonny Fairplay, as usual. His votes even read "Fairplay".
  • Sudden Sequel Elimination Syndrome: Jonny made the finale and just one immunity challenge from winning Pearl Islands. Here, Jonny asked to be voted out and he was the first to leave.
  • Suicide by Cop: Asked to leave in the middle of drama on the tribe, and immediately derailed their power struggle.
  • Ugly Guy, Hot Wife: While he isn't that hideous, his wife is a former America's Next Top Model contestant.
  • V-Sign: Did this greeting more than he waved.
  • Villain Decay: Went from the single most villainous person to ever play Survivor, to some dolt who decided to troll the show by asking to be voted out.
