    Gyuhwan Han

Gyuhwan Han

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gyuhwan_9.PNG
The main protagonist of Shotgun Boy, an outcast boy who wishes to kill all of his classmates after being pushed too far. After running away from his bully, Seongbin, he stumbles upon a weapon that can defeat the monsters that attack his retreat.
  • Ambiguously Absent Parent: While his father appears in flashbacks and has a minor plot point of being ill, Gyuhwan's mom is hardly mentioned if at all.
  • Anti-Hero: Gyuhwan wishes to murder all of his bullies, as well as all of his classmates and teacher for turning a blind eye to his bullying. As soon as the monsters attack, he is unsure whether he should actually save his classmates or not.
  • Artistic License – Gun Safety: Gyuhwan often carries his shotgun with the finger on the trigger and uses it as a crunch multiple times. Justified, since he has no actual gun training.
  • Axes at School: In his dream, Gyuhwan brings a shotgun to school. Later, in real life, once he stumbles upon a shotgun, he brings it back to his senior retreat, hoping to kill his classmates - only for the monsters to attack.
  • Berserk Button: Gets very angry when Seongbin insults his sick father.
  • Beware the Quiet Ones: He's a quiet, socially awkward kid who generally keeps to himself. But deep down, he's full of pent-up rage and hatred towards his bullies and classmates. Later, he proves to be very dangerous with a shotgun and manages to kill some of the monsters.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Though not an actual child, Gyuhwan forms a friendship with the monster, Zero.
  • Bully Hunter: Gyuhwan wishes to kill his bullies. This is shown in the beginning in his dream and later on when he is playing an arcade game and imagines the zombies in it as them.
  • Butt-Monkey: Very much Played for Drama.
  • Character Development: As the story progresses, Gyuhwan becomes much braver and more willing to stand up for himself. He also becomes much less vindictive, being willing to save (some) of his classmates and work with others. He even limits his revenge against Seongbin to punching him in the face.
  • Contrasting Sequel Main Character: Prequel, but Gyuhwnan is pretty much this to Hyun. Both are socially withdrawn young men and victims of bullying. However:
    • Hyun was suicidal while Gyuhwan was homicidal.
    • Hyun had a damaged relationship with his family, while Gyuhwan visibly loves his dad.
    • Hyun was a half-monster while Gyuhwan is a normal human until he is revealed to be infected, too.
    • Hyun spent his experience with the monsters surrounded by strangers he learnt to care for and protect, while Gyuhwan is surrounded by people he knew but hated and desired to get killed.
    • Hyun was also much more outwardly aggressive and mean-spirited than Gyuhwan, but always meant well, while Gyuhwan behaved in a defeated manner, while being extremely vindictive.
    • Hyun eventually became a full monster and, later, an ubermensch by the epilogue while Gyuhwan remained a human, presumably thanks to MM's help in keeping his inner monster inside his subconscious mind.
  • Cowardly Lion: He is too afraid too stick up for himself and in the past, he always relied on Shinyeong to save him from bullies. When the monsters attack, he ends up being one of the only ones able to effectively fight and even kill the monsters.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: When he was in middle school, he had to drive his sick father to the hospital. When his bullies learned that Gyuhwan was home alone, they took advantage of it by using it as a hangout - while forcing him to let them do it by beating him to a pulp. This isn't even getting into the severe bullying he faced repeatedly throughout school.
  • Depleted Phlebotinum Shells: His shotgun's rounds are coated in a green "venom" that can kill the Variants.
  • Driven to Villainy: Due to years of abuse and mistreatment, he shows no empathy for his classmates or his teachers. At one point, he even considers stealing a car and leaving them all to die.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: Gyuhwan was prone to melodramatic facial expressions during tense moments (such as when getting bullied). Later, when in tense moments, he is often drawn the same as everyone else.
  • Establishing Character Moment: Shown in his dream of shooting his entire class.
  • Extreme Doormat: In the beginning of the series, as well as most of his life he had put up with extreme bullying. He even let Seongbin try to force him to steal liquor for him and use his house.
  • Hates Everyone Equally: Hates his classmates and teacher just as much as his bullies for not helping him. He even takes hate on his former best friend.
  • Hidden Depths: His mental conversation with Zero reveals that Gyuhwan is much more insightful, and even idealistic, about life than you would expect someone his age and in his situation to be. He even says to Zero that trapping people in a world of desires would be giving them fake happiness.
  • Hypocrite: Violently hates his peers for not standing up for him, when he couldn't even stand up for himself.
  • I Know Mortal Kombat: He learned how to use the shotgun by practicing with an arcade shooting game.
  • Improbable Aiming Skills: Played with in the fact that he’s not one hundred percent perfect with his aim and sometimes misses his target, but even then, it’s shown that he’s a natural crackshot with a shotgun despite having never touched a gun in his life. His only experience is going to the arcade to play a shooting game with Hyuk.
  • In-Universe Nickname: His bullies call him "Goowad."
  • Irony: He intends on using a shotgun he finds to murder his bullies and classmates, only to find himself one of the only ones who can actually help survive against the monsters.
  • Knight in Sour Armor: After Character Development, he is willing to fight to protect his classmates, even if he has every reason not to.
  • Luminescent Blush: Blushes visibly and gets awkward when Shinyeong hugs him and says she was worried about him.
  • The Main Characters Do Everything: Justified, since he is the one who has the shotgun (and is actually pretty good with it), while everyone else is just an average person. The only other useful allies are Shinyeong and Zero (if he's actually an ally.)
  • Mirror Character: To the classmates he hates so much. He really resents them due to them turning a blind eye to his issues, but Gyuhwan himself was terrified of his bullies and could barely stand up for himself. Gyuhwan even is forced to silently admit to himself during his pep talk with Shinyeong that, if it were someone else suffering the bullying he suffered, he likely wouldn't have acted either. And what's more, a few pieces of dialogue here and there imply that other students got it just as bad from Seongbin.
  • Morality Chain: Acts as this towards Zero.
  • Nice Guy: For all his pented-up anger and revenge fantasies, Gyuhwan is this. Flashbacks and interactions with other characters show him to be a pretty good-natured young man, if one who got pushed to far by a awful situation.
  • Power Copying: Not exactly a superpower but during his confrontation with Seongbin, he manages to get the drop on him by using Seven's Encircling Attack.
  • Sanity Strengthening: Gyuhwan slowly but surely gives up on his violent revenge fantasies, to the point he is downright shocked with himself when reminded by Zero.
  • Shotguns Are Just Better: His main weapon. He practiced his aim at an arcade.
  • Super-Speed: During his fight with the explicitly superhuman Seongbin in chapter 57, Gyuhwan manages to easily react to his attack and outmanouver him.
  • Super-Strength: Manages to knock Monster-Seongbin on his ass with a single good punch to his face. Said punch appears to have caused shockwaves.
  • Super-Toughness: Due to his infection. During his face-off with Monster-Seongbin, Gyuhwan survives multiple direct hits, even though Seongbin is explicitily super-strong at that point.
  • Supporting Protagonist: Similarly to Hyun from the parent series, the series occasionaly puts his story arc on the backseat to show what the other characthers are up to (namely Seongbin and Chayeong).
  • Took a Level in Badass: Gyuhwan went from a meek and wimpy kid who couldn’t stand up for himself to a shotgun-wielding badass who takes shit from no one.
  • Villain Protagonist: Downplayed. The beginning of the story reveals his desire to murder his classmates and teacher, but in real-life, he never acts on it - up until he finds a shotgun after an angry Seongbin tries to chase him. He bursts into the retreat's talent show with it while screaming Seongbin's name, intending on killing him and possibly the rest of his class. He doesn't end up killing him (only because Seongbin was still lost in the forest at the time) or his class due to the monsters attacking the retreat.
  • What You Are in the Dark: During his battle against Seongbin, Gyuhwan gets a clear chance to re-grab the shotgun, shoot Seongbin in secret and win. However, he elects to face him with his fists, and manages to come out on top anyway.
  • Wrong Genre Savvy: Gyuhwan really thought he was the protagonist of a Axes at School revenge plot. He is actually in a supernatural thriller.
  • Zombie Infectee: Gyuhwan is eventually revealed to be infected with monsterization.

    Seongbin Yu

Seongbin Yu

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/seongbin_glares_at_gyuhwan_2.PNG
The local bully at school, able to get away with brutal bullying in public, partly due to his status as an elite student. Upon discovering the monsters' handiwork, he quickly forms a survivor party with the intent of fighting back. Seongbin is little better than the monsters hunting him, treating his subordinates as disposable and eager to enjoy consequence-free murder of humans and monsters alike.
  • Abusive Parents: His father was of the emotionally abusive and negletful variety.
  • Asshole Victim: One kills Seongbin in Chapter 61, and in Chapter 64, Sanggwon bashes his skull in, so he stays dead. Considering he tormented Gyuhwan and Shinyeong, killed his brother on his hospital bed, and went nuts during his monsterization, none of the protagonists or Sanggwon shed any tears for him.
  • Ax-Crazy: He was never "all there", however after being infected and suffering a Sanity Slippage, Seongbin becomes a rampaging killer who mauls whoever he can to death.
  • Berserk Button: Goes into a possibly murderous frenzy when Gyuhwan says his dad must hate raising someone like him. It is later revealed he has a dark history with his family.
  • Big Bad Wannabe: While Seongbin is definitively dangerous and evil (not to mention very important to the story), he is a small fish compared to One.
  • Broken Ace: Is a school athlete, an academic genius, and a fairly competent survivor... and also a total sociopath whose greatest fear is being outed to the world as a cowardly murderer. Also, his father didn't even act like he existed, which completely broke his mind.
  • The Bully: Yeongchan High's worst.
  • Climax Boss: His confrontation with Gyuhwan was build-up from the very beginning of the story. Once Seongbin is dealt with, One takes central stage.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Seongbin was raised by an negletful and unloving father who cared only for Seongbin's elder brother (meanwhile his mother is implied to not be in the picture). He eventually got into a truck accident where said elder brother got fatally injured protecting him. This caused Seongbin to snap and murder his brother in his sleep just after.
  • Deader than Dead: One kills Seongbin in Chapter 61, absorbing his brain, and in Chapter 64, Sanggwon bashes his skull in.
  • Dropped a Bridge on Him: One unceremoniously kills Seongbin in Chapter 61, absorbing his brain from behind. Shinyeong admits how anti-climatic his death was.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: During the first few chapters, Seongbin often kept a constantly deadpan and weirdly calm demeanour, even when bullying others. Later he becomes more expressive.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Zig-Zagged Trope.
    • He really did love his big brother. While Seongbin did murder him, its heavily implied to have been at least partially out of desperation to get on their negletful father's graces. It's implied he has been living with this guilt since then, only losing his remorse after turning into a monster.
    • While he didn't give a rat's ass about Chanhyeok, it's heavily implied he did have some affection towards Sanggwon. See Pet the Dog below. However, after his infection progresses, Seongbin ditches him and even tries to kill him.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Downplayed, but he isn't really a fan of Director Lee.
  • Evil Counterpart: To Gyuhwan. They are both the first students to become monsters. While Gyuhwan (eventually) uses his powers to protect people, Seongbin uses his solely for himself.
  • Evil vs. Evil:
    • VS Samshik. Gets interrupted by another evil, One.
    • VS One. Seongbin loses their second bout.
  • Expy: Seongbin is pretty much Kiyotaka Ayanokouji as a Barbaric Bully antagonist. The two share the hairstyle and general appearance, resting bitch face, bordeline-sociopathic personalities, social darwinist views and Daddy Issues backstory. But while Ayanokouji is ultimately a genuinely troubled individual who just wants to earns his freedom, Seongbin in very much sadistic and evil.
  • Freudian Excuse: It does not even begin to justify his actions, but his father ignored and shunned him and showed open favoritism towards his brother. Seongbin also witnessed said brother being run over by truck, futher damaging his psyche.
  • Hate Sink: He's a complete scumbag who gets off on viciously bullying Gyuhwan and others - and he just gets worse from there.
  • The Heavy: One is likely the biggest threat to Gyuhwan and the other survivors, but Seongbin is Gyuhwan's most personal enemy and the one that gets the most focus of the two.
  • Hidden Depths:
    • There is no denying that Seongbin is a horrible person, but he is also a very talented young man. It is said a few times he is a elite student, being a straight-A grades-wise and an school athlete. He is also good at reading people, as seen when he quickly and accurately realized Samshik's intentions towards him.
    • Seongbin is also a profoundly lonely individual, as he was raised by an negletful and unloving father and no one, not even his "friends" and bootlickers seem to truly like or care for him. However, it's very hard to feel sorry for him over it.
  • Jerkass: He's arrogant, selfish and looks down on everyone around him, including his "friends".
  • Jerkass Has a Point: He is one to talk, but Seongbin's remarks about Director Lee were spot on, given the stunt he pulls later.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Jerk: While he has a tragic side to him and one or two Pet the Dog moments, Seongbin is still consistently portrayed as a near-psychopathic asswipe.
  • Lack of Empathy: Besides being a bully, he also shows no sympathy towards Gyuhwan's sick father and even insults him for it. He also has no problem sending his closest friends to certain death, even smiling at the thought.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: During his confrontation with Gyuhwan in chapter 56, he remarks it feels like a long time he doesn't see him and that it was a long night. It's like he understands the fans waiting a year for this confronation.
  • Misanthrope Supreme: Implied. Seongbin seems to feel nothing but hatred towards most other people. That is part of the reason One goes after him, as he feels Seongbin shares his hatred for humanity.
  • Mind Rape: Zero forces him to relive the painful memory of being shunned by his father, as well as watching his brother get hit by a truck.
  • Murder Is the Best Solution: Believes the best way to stop the shape-shifting monsters is by murdering every person they come across.
  • Never My Fault: To the point that he tries to murder what he sees as a monstrous killing machine, just to ignore its accusations of murdering his older brother:
  • Nightmare Face: Prone to this. Early in the series it can be chalked-up to Rule of Perception, however after he is infected it's heavily implied that such expressions are happening In-Universe.
  • Parental Neglect: Before he became a bully, the only thing he ever wanted was the approval of his father. For whatever reason, his father doesn't even acknowledge his existence.
  • Pet the Dog: In what may have been his only bout of selflessness thus far, When Samshik tries to force him to choose between himself and Sanggwon, he attacks Samshik in a rage and tells Sanggwon to run, refusing to sacrifice him.
  • Sadist: Clearly enjoys bullying Gyuhwan and his other classmates. He's thrilled by his classmates being killed by the monsters as well. Once he becomes a monster himself, he goes on a mass killing spree.
  • Sanity Slippage: He starts to lose his mind after the monsters attack, becoming consumed by bloodlust. He later snaps after Zero reads his mind and discovers he murdered his older brother.
  • Skewed Priorities: He shows more concern with his ego and sadism than his actual survival. He attempts to pulp a nigh-invincible monster with psychic powers, rather than just admit to the curious monster that he murdered his brother. He also denies protection from the monster Samshik because it called him a loser.
  • The Sociopath: He is definitely this. He's a bully who picked a student at random and made their life hell, just because he could. He shows no capacity for remorse in his actions, especially since he thinks he can get away with anything. And most importantly, he's willing to do anything, even throw his own life away, to keep others (and especially himself) from realizing he crossed the Moral Event Horizon a long time ago.
  • Super-Strength: After his infection progresses, he becomes able to maim people and fell trees with his bare hands.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: Despite the better part of the story building him up as the ultimate threat, Seongbin was a monster for only a few hours, and thus was utterly outmatched by One, who's implied to be around for decades and has devoured countless other monsters to increase his power. Seongbin getting killed by him during their second bout is almost a Foregone Conclusion.
  • Villain Protagonist: He is one of the main characters, with his own narrative.
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: See Parental Neglect above.
  • Would Hurt a Child: He is willing to bash in the brains of what he thinks is a little girl, just because she called him out for what he really is. He also technically killed his brother, but they were both children at the time.
  • Zombie Infectee: Zero eventually infects him with the monster-transformation.

    Sanggwon Ahn

Sanggwon Ahn

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sanggwon.PNG
A bullying student and one of Seongbin's goons. He eventually forms a group with Seongbin, Hayeong (who's actually the Variant, Samshik) and Chanhyeok.
  • The Big Guy: The most bulky student in his class. He was able to lift up Gyuhwan in the past with no problem.
  • Character Development: As the story progresses, Sanggwon becomes disillusioned with Seongbin and Chanhyeok. He even apologizes to Gyuhwan during their second encounter
  • Everyone Has Standards: He starts to become disillusioned with Seongbin due to his increasingly violent and ruthless behaviour. He also refuses to sell off Park to Hayeong/Sanshik.
  • Heel–Face Turn: While he wasn't technically evil, Sanggwon was a jerk and a bully alongside Seongbin. However, as Seongbin goes mad with his new powers from his monsterization and declining sanity, he becomes disillusioned with his former friend, deciding to leave him before he turns on him. In Chapter 64, Sanggwon bashes Seongbin's skull in to make sure he stays dead and gives a legitimate apology to Gyuhwan.
  • Hidden Depths: He is much more aware of the severity of the situation than you would assume him to be. For example, he is the only one of the bullies to seriously consider the idea of Gyuhwan gunning for them. There is also him realizing that telling Shinyeong about Samshik is a bad idea.
  • Hopeless Suitor: Has a major crush on Shinyeong, who not only hates him for being a bully and Seongbin's friend, but is implied to have feelings for Gyuhwan.
  • Jerkass: Frequently bullied Gyuhwan Han.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Although his bullying of Gyuhwan is unforgivable, he is still shown to be a good person such as not sacrificing Chanhyeok to Samshik and (almost) telling Shinyeong that Samshik was a monster.
  • Non-Uniform Uniform: Is almost always seen wearing a green track jacket, contrasting everybody else white uniforms.
  • Those Two Guys: Always seen with Chanhyeok Park.
  • Token Good Teammate: Is the only person in his group who isn't a psychopath or obnoxious coward. He tries to work with Shinyeong and let her know one of his teammates is a monster.

    Chanhyeok Park

Chanhyeok Park

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/chanhyeok.PNG
A bullying student and one of Seongbin's goons. He eventually forms a group with Seongbin, Hayeong (who's actually the Variant, Samshik) and Sanggwon.
  • Butt-Monkey: Chanhyeok is considered idiotic and useless by most people, particularly Seongbin. Seongbin tries to use him as bait twice and eventually "Hayeong" does as well.
  • Dirty Coward:
    • Asks Sanggwon to save him from the monsters, while doing nothing himself.
    • Willing to let Samshik kill his best friend, so he can live.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Gets disturbed when Seongbin bashes in Zero's skull and some of his later behaviours.
  • Jerkass: Frequently bullied Gyuhwan Han. Even shows disrespect to him, after Gyuhwan saved his life.
  • Please, I Will Do Anything!: Begs Samshik and later the MM not to kill him.
  • Smug Smiler: When not freaking out, he's seen with a wide grin and closed eyes.
  • Those Two Guys: Always seen with Sanggwon Ahn.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: Still continues to call Gyuhwan a loser even after Gyuhwan saved his life.

    Seonyeob Kim

Seonyeob Kim

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/porky.png
A cowardly student who gets bullied like Gyuhwan.
  • Dirty Coward:
    • In Gyuhwan's dream, he assisted in Gyuhwan's bullying, so he wouldn't be bullied himself.
    • He begs Gyuhwan to save his life, claiming he would've helped him if he could.
    • He, along with Director Lee, attempt to steal Gyuhwan's shotgun so they can save themselves.
  • Human Shield: Used as a shield by Four. However, this doesn't work, as Gyuhwan is willing to shoot through him.

    Seonu Gil

Seonu Gil

    Yeongseon Lee

    Shinyeong Kang

Shinyeong Kang

  • Bully Hunter: She tried to stand up for Gyuhwan in the past.
  • Challenging the Bully:
    • She asked Seongbin to stop bullying Gyuhwan at one point. However, he ended up turning her into an outcast.
    • She goes up against the creature who took her bully, Mira Han's, memories and appearance.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Jerkass is pushing it, but during her heart-to-heart with Gyuhwan, she rightfully points out that she did try to help him (and it costed her dearly), meaning that is very cruel and selfish of him to label her a traitor. She also points out that Gyuhwan is resentful of everyone else for not standing up for him, while he couldn't even stand up for himself.
  • Not So Above It All: Takes a moment to tease Gyuhwan over his crush towards her while the two are scouting a hallway.
  • Ship Tease: Teased Gyuhwan for him having a crush on her in the past. However, her protectiveness and worry about him, as well as the positive interactions between them, all but comfirms she has feelings for Gyuhwan too.

    Jongpil Shin

Jongpil Shin

A surviving student who is current an ally alongside Gyuhwan.
  • Berserk Button: Calls his classmates plebs when they insult his recorder.
  • Butt-Monkey: Not the luckiest dude around. From getting booed off the stage from his flute/recorder show to getting his legs broken by Zero, only to be healed and then injured again by One.
  • Cowardly Lion: Often visibly shows fear, but is still willing to act, such as standing up to Four, Seongbin and Zero.
  • Hidden Depths:
    • You wouldn't expect him to deal with the monster situation as well he does. In fact, he can be pretty smart and brave, such as volunteering to do tasks with the other survivors and using his recorder to distract monsters.
    • A minor example, but when Gyuhwan was considering betraying the class to Five, Jongpil was one of the few students who were not begging for forgiveness or help.
  • Mirror Character: He is like a nicer version of Hyuk Lee from Sweet Home. They are both nerdy individuals with leadership qualities who befriend the main protagonist during an extraneous event. They are also both big fans of Maria from the Sky. Unrelated, but Hyuk is already one of Gyuhwan's best friends.
  • Plucky Comic Relief: The source of a few moments of levity.
  • Those Two Guys: Almost always seen with Jayden after the variant attack.

    Mira Han

Mira Han

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mira_3.png
Shinyeong's friend-turned-bully who is quickly killed by the Variant, Five. She was part of a dancing group called Mira's Miracles with Hayeong Lee, Sujin Park and Jinhui Noh.
  • Asshole Victim: After seeing Mira bully Shinyeong and treat her friends like crap,it was hard to feel sad about her death. This became even more true when we learned she laughed at Shinyeong for being humiliated.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Most students seemed unaware that Mira was a spoiled brat and bully. She seemingly sucked up to adults, like one of the "employees." She was popular enough to the point where she had over 13,000 subscribers on YouTube.
  • The Bully: Not only to Shinyeong, but to her own friends. She changes their song for the talent show at the last minute, then gets mad at them for not performing correctly. Five also refers to herself as a bully once "becoming" Mira.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: Goes off on her friends, causing them to talk about her.
  • Oh, Crap!: Has this reaction when seeing a monster in the bathroom.
  • Virtual Celebrity: To a certain extent, she has 13,000 subscribers on the popular streaming site, YouTube, where she got 4,000 views per upload.
  • We Used to Be Friends: Supposedly, she used to be friends with Shinyeong. But this went downhill after Shinyeong was humiliated by Seongbin.

  • Jerkass:
    • In Gyuhwan's dream, she laughs at Gyuhwan for being bullied and says it's not her problem.
    • Is not willing to save her students from the monsters (although most people would be too scared like her.)
  • Jerkass Has a Point: States that if she tries to save her students, it would end up just killing her as well. In her words, you shouldn't a drowning victim if you can't swim.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: As self-centered and apathetic as she is, she really did care about Ms. Ahn. Later, she attempts to sacrifice herself to save her students.

The dislikable director of Yeongchan High. He supposedly served in the marines before.

MM Experiments

    Zero

Zero

A mysterious red-eyed monster who refuses to be a true monster.
  • Ambiguous Gender: Sanggjin Kim refers to Zero as a boy. However, the Zero we see looks like a girl and Seongbin's group even refers to it as one. It is possible it changed genders, though.
  • Ambiguous Situation: What exactly Zero is is pretty much anyone's guess. He has a broken voice similar to the Monsters of the original series, but has a mostly humanoid appearance and can infect others with the monster-transformation similar to the "Evolved Humans", also from the original series. He is also implied to be related to the Variants, but they don't seem to recognize him as one of their own.
  • Barrier Warrior: Uses his telekenesis to this effect.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Meeting Gyuhwan and his friends is an almost foreign experience to him, so he is determined to protect them no matter what.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: His sweet natured and mellow personality is genuine, but so is his brutal side that kills and insults variants or people with "diseased souls."
  • Cute Monster Boy: Can easily be identified as a child, despite being a god-like monster.
  • Freudian Excuse: Zero once was a orphan wandering the streets. He was eventually sheltered by horrible people who abused him, causing Zero to decide that humanity is sick and kill his abusers. And then there were the MM corporation's experiments...
  • Friend or Foe?: It's still unclear whether he is an ally or an enemy. The MM lists him as a dangerous monster, but he saves the lives of Gyuhwan and Chayeong.
  • Healing Factor: Having his head beaten open by Seongbin was only a minor hussle for him.
  • Healing Hands: As long as the person is not clinically dead, Zero can make them recover instantly from pretty much anything. He saves Gyuhwan after Four pierces his chest.
  • Longhaired Pretty Boy: Has long hair that makes him look like a girl.
  • Mind over Matter:One of Zero's main powers is telekenesis, which he uses to deflect his enemies like 03, 07 and Shinyeong.
  • Mind Rape: He can force others to suffer traumatic memories, such as making Seongbin reliving him being shunned by his father, then his brother ending up in a car accident.
  • Mystical Waif: As a child, Zero was an orphan who had no life skills or social skills.
  • Not Quite Dead: Seems to die when Seongbin bashes his head in with a stick. Only to be seen completely fine a few chapters later.
  • Psychic Powers: Posesseses multiple abilities such as Telepathy, telekenesis, soul sight, healing and monsterization infection.
  • Riddle for the Ages: We never get an explanation on Zero's origins or the source of his power. His earliest memory is coming to on an alley and he seemed to already have his abilities from the get go.
  • Token Heroic Orc: The only monster in the area who wants to protect innocents rather than eat them.
  • Touched by Vorlons: Can give people monster powers by healing them or tapping on their minds.
  • You Shall Not Pass!: Blocks Three from killing Chayeong.
  • World's Strongest Man: Zero, despite being a child (or at least a childlike being), is the strongest character in the story save maybe One. He can regenerate from having his body torn apart to the head, can use his Psychic Powers to harm the otherwise near-unkillable Variants, heal others and infect them with the monster-infection. While One managed to overwhelm him during their fight, even he was forced to flee when Zero's allies jumped in the fray.

Variants

The main antagonists of the story, a gang of shapeshifting, brain-sucking monsters.

    General Tropes
  • The Assimilator: Their main schtick; they want to suck the brains out of their victims, giving them the memories and forms needed to impersonate them.
  • Brain Food: They eat the brains of their prey.
  • Combat Tentacles: They mainly attack by shooting tentacles out of their heads.
  • Contrasting Sequel Antagonist: Unlike the monsters from Sweet Home, they show intelligence.
  • Driven to Villainy: Due to cruel experimentation from the MM Corporation. Especially with Four, who used to be a valiant firefighter.
  • Escaped from the Lab: The were experimented on by the MM Corporation, but escaped their captivity somehow.
  • Evil Wears Black: Although their outfits are pretty casual, they all wear a black t-shirt in their introductions.
  • Healing Factor: The monsters can revive from nearly any wound - as long as it doesn't involve the mysterious green ammo that Gyuhwan found.
  • Mirror Character:
    • To Gyuhwan, as both were Driven to Villainy due to being mistreated by others.
    • To the Gang of Bullies, as both are villainious groups led by self-centered and misanthropic leaders.
  • Monstrous Cannibalism: Sometimes the monsters will eat eachother to absorb their memories. One does this to Three and Seven does this to Four.
  • Nigh-Invulnerability: The only things that can truly harm them so far are the shotgun's venom shells and Zero. Anything else, including decapitation, not only fail to kill them but regenerate in no time.
  • Two Girls to a Team: Although their true genders are unknown, two of them seem to prefer female bodies.
  • Villainous Rescue: Ironically, they end up saving Yeongchan High from Gyuhwan who was originally going to shoot his classmates. Instead, Gyuhwan wishes too kill them.
  • You Are Number 6: Referred to as numbers, ranging from One and Seven (as well as Zero, who is in his own category.) The only exception to this name rule so far is Samshik.

    One (01)

One

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/one_0.jpg
The Leader of the variants and likely the main antagonist.
  • Avenging the Villain: When he stumbles upon a dying Three, the latter asks him to avenge him and kill the one who did this to him. One obliges and eats his brain, absorbing his memory.
  • Ax-Crazy: 01 acts collected most of the time, but is a megalomaniacal mass murderer who lashses out in horryfing rages when things go awry.
  • The Bad Guy Wins: While he did suffer a number of setbacks, One achieved almost all his goals by the end of the series. He has slaughtered the MM forces, taken over Zero's body and kick-started the mosterization apocalypse.
  • Beneath the Mask: Not exactly a mask, but he reveals his true face in Chapter 7.
  • Big Bad: The closest to one in the story, alongside Seongbin.
  • Cannibalism Superpower: One increased his own power by preying on other variants.
  • Cop Killer: In Chapter 36, he murders 2 police offices.
  • Even Evil Has Standards:
    • Downplayed, but he is occasionaly taken aback by just how much of a Dysfunction Junction Yeongchan High's folk is.
    • One also considers himself a "man of his word", sparing the rest of the survivors after Ms. Kim sacrifices herself on a promise to him.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: Is completely unable to understand why Zero would befriend such useless humans.
  • Evil vs. Evil: Comes into conflict with Seongbin. One comes out on top.
  • Expy: His appearence, role in the story and elements of his personality bring Muzan Kibutsuji to mind. Both also have the late-series goal of devouring a special member of their species (Nezuko for Muzan, Zero for One) for more power.
  • Faux Affably Evil: Treats most people superficially politelly and formal, but is a murderous and ruthless monster.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: The finale reveals he is this to the parent series Sweet Home (2017), being resposible for the monster outbreak.
  • Hero Killer: Kills Zero, as well as Ms. Kim and Seonyeob.
  • I Gave My Word: For someone above humanity and sees humans as beneath him, One is a being of his word. In Chapter 60, he tells Ms. Kim he'll spare her students if she sacrifices herself, she does, and while One does kill her, he keeps his promise and lets the kids live.
  • Kill All Humans:...well...70% of all humans...but that is his endgoal.
  • The Leader: Seeming in charge of the other Variants. They respect him and acknowledge his power.
  • Man of Wealth and Taste: One has a taste for human culture and wares, and flashbacks show him indulging in a number of fancy hobbies.
  • Mirror Character: To Seongbin. Both are the leaders of antagonistic factions, both are willing to exploit and harm their subordinates, and both are monsters (though One was born a monster while Seongbin was "infected" into a monster). Part of the reason One goes after Seongbin, in fact, is because he feels the bully shares his narcissistic personality and hatred for humanity.
  • Monster Lord: The leader of the variants, and heavily implied to be the strongest of them, however he still is a level below Zero.
  • Monstrous Cannibalism: While most variants engage in it to some degree, One has deliberately devoured several other variants to increase his power. One even admits eating more of his own kind than humans.
  • Pet the Dog: After taking over Zero's body, he uses the boy's powers to save Gyuhwan and his friends from the MM troops.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: He spares the survivors at the MM bunker (save Ms. Kim and Seonyeob), but not out of kindness but because he had no need to kill them and he was in a hurry. Played With, as it is strongly implied he also spared them because he expects them to die during the monsterization outbreak.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: In his main form, he has red eyes.
  • Shadow Archetype: One is essentially a much more dangerous version of Seongbin. He acts as a dark reminder to the heroes of what Seongbin can become if not stopped and if his monster transformation becomes fully-realized.
  • Villain Has a Point: He points out that Ms. Kim is in no position to call him a coward, given how utterly negletful she was towads her students.
  • Villainous Breakdown: His cool and smug attitude breaks when Gyuhwan ambushes him with the shotgun during his fight with Zero.
  • Villain Takes an Interest: Becomes interested in Seongbin Yu after seeing how he does monster-like actions.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Blows up Zero's body using his tentacles. Doesn't stick however.
  • World's Strongest Man: One is the most powerful of the Variants, which inclunde powerhouses like Four. He is also strong enough to survive a direct hit from the shotgun and overwhelm Zero in a fight.

    Three (03)

Three

Disguised as a student
One of the variants.
  • Arc Villain: Serves as the main antagonist during Chayeong's arc (Ep. 23-26).
  • Avenging the Villain: When he lays dying by the hands of Zero, he asks One to avenge him.
  • Dirty Coward: Three is stated by the others to be a coward. This is shown when Three screams at the sight of a shotgun, as well as hides from Seongbin and his gang.
  • Evil Plan: Three stated to Chayeong that he wishes for monsters to be known to the public, whether as an urban legend or a massive threat, even though One wishes to keep their identity secret. However, it's unknown if he was serious or just joking.
  • Nightmare Face: Gives a devious smile when finding Chayeong Park, as well as after killing a rich student and taking his appearance.
  • Oh, Crap!: Has this reaction when Gyuhwan shows up with a shotgun.
  • Smoke Out: Blows a smokescreen to escape Zero.
  • Villain Has a Point: When Chayeong asks why he kills humans, he states it's because they are different and humans do the same thing.

  • Mirthless Laughter: Laughed while being tortured by the MM.

Four

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/four_9.jpg

  • Avenging the Villain: Seven swears to get revenge on the ones who killed Four and eats his memories.
  • Bond Villain Stupidity: Seven is seemingly one of the smarter Variants, but he frequently gets cocky when fighting Gyuhwan. It wasn't very smart of him to:
    • Run straight at the boy with the shotgun
    • Start clapping during one of his fights
    • Giving a speech to Gyuhwan before killing him. Thanks to this, he ended up being shot by Shinyeong and almost died.

  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: When Gyuhwan tries to hold Zero's hand to get him out of the collapsing cave and trips, letting Zero get crushed in the process, Zero claps and mocks Gyuhwan that things would've worked out if he just hadn't held onto Zero's hand.
