    Sanjay Patel
Voiced by: Maulik Pancholy

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/16484311_mfi8o.png

The main protagonist of the show. He's a 12-year-old Indian-American boy who lives with his parents and his anthropomorphic pet snake.

  • All-Loving Hero: He loves to resolve conflicts amicably and bring people together, as seen in "Blackout", "The Giving G" and towards the end of "D.I.N.K.".
  • Badass Adorable: He's as Endearingly Dorky as is he is resourceful, adventurous and genuinely heroic.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Despite how cheerful and friendly he is, he has an angry and assertive side that comes out whenever he feels he's been tricked or duped. Craig has brought out this side of him in episodes like "Depants Day" and "Heartyface" (the former when Craig tricked him into losing a depants game, and the latter where Craig scared him by going missing, which wound up just being a ploy to take a photo to get attention on a social media website.)
  • But Not Too Foreign: He has an Indian father and a Caucasian mother.
  • Character Development: In the early episodes, he was gullible, clumsy, and childlike. By the end of the first season, he became the shy, well-meaning, good leader we all know and love.
  • Cheerful Child: He is always happy. In one episode he greets Craig in the morning with "Good morning, sunshine!".
  • Covered in Gunge: He and Craig got covered in bird droppings in "Laugh Quake".
  • Cute and Psycho: He tends to slip into this trope once in a while.
  • Cute Bruiser: As shown at the end of "Be Like Tufflips", "Cuddle Buddy" and "Wild Buds", he's shown to pack quite a punch.
  • Dogged Nice Guy: To Belle Pepper, although to be fair, she doesn't seem to realize how fond he is of her.
  • Embarrassing Middle Name: As revealed in "Middle Shame", it's so embarrassing that it's even cursed!
  • Gasshole: Especially in the first season, such as the episode "Fart Baby". This trait winds up being Downplayed over time, and in "2 Tuff 2 Watch", he even expresses losing an interest in farts and Toilet Humor.
  • Hates Being Alone: The plot of "Lundgren Loner" involves him trying to cope with spending an afternoon apart from Craig. After being visited by his inner voice (which appears to be an older version of himself), he finally begins to accept that he won't always be able to be with Craig all the time.

  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: With Craig. He quickly befriends him after adopting him at the pet store, and they applied the "bro code" to their friendship. The theme song even states they're in the Best Friends Hall of Fame.
  • I Just Want to Be Badass: He idolizes former action film star Remington Tufflips, loves attempting dangerous stunts, and even attends a special school for aspiring stuntmen/stuntwomen.
  • Intergenerational Friendship: His best friend, Craig, is an adult snake (according to Craig himself anyway), while he is a young human adolescent.
  • In Touch with His Feminine Side: Despite having lots of aggressive energy, absolutely reveling in action-oriented and gross-out stuff, and wanting to be a stuntman, he finds his mom's make-up kit in "Dolled Up" and discovers that he very much enjoys pampering himself. He also doesn't seem to mind dressing up, and he has a gentle and caring demeanor and personality in general.
  • Jerkass Ball: In "Traffical Island", he acted like a jerk to his friends. He refused to let Megan not to pretend to be Penny (she wanted to be Belle instead), called Craig a pet snake and viewed Hector as his love interest (Belle) instead of his best friend while prototyping the Frycade. He later came down with a My God, What Have I Done? moment and tries to make it up to them.
  • Mister Seahorse: He becomes "pregnant" with the titular character in "Fart Baby".

    Craig Slithers
Voiced by: Chris Hardwick

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/craig_by_porygon2z_d719i6j_9.jpg

Sanjay's talkative pet snake and best friend.

  • Badass Adorable: Craig looks like a plush toy, however he's also a semi-feral animal who mauls other wild beasts alive for lunch.
  • Berserk Button: Calling him a pet seems to make him rather upset.
  • Breakout Character: In character polls, he usually takes the top spot; not to mention making a nice number of viewers want their own (talking) pet snake. It's even better on Tumblr, where he's adored by a quite a few members and heck, even has a fan blog about him!
  • Big Brother Instinct: He's shown to act like an older brother to Sanjay, which is ironic since he's the newest member of the Patel family. He is willing to risk himself to save Sanjay even when he's mad at him.
  • Big Eater: Big time. Heck, he can eat a whole plate of hot wings in one gulp.
  • Casanova Wannabe: He appears to have/had a crush on Darlene and Belle, he sometimes fantasies about female snakes and even has a picture of one as a wallpaper on his laptop in "Lundgren Loner".
  • Half-Dressed Cartoon Animal: All he has to do to pass as human is wear clothes.
  • Happily Adopted: Craig is seen by Darlene and Vijay as their child and they love and care for him just as much as Sanjay.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: With Sanjay. He quickly became Sanjay's best friend after being adopted by him at the pet store, and they applied the "bro code" to their friendship. The theme song even states they're in the Best Friends Hall of Fame.
  • Intergenerational Friendship: If he is to be believed about being an adult in "Muscle C.O.P.S", then he has one of these with his best friend, Sanjay; Sanjay is a young, human adolescent while he is an adult snake.
  • I Just Want to Be Loved: In "Space Race" and "G.U.T.S Buster" Craig is jealous of Sanjay getting attention from Vijay presumably because he is his biological son.
  • I Just Want to Be Normal: When Sanjay has trouble learning to be a snake, Craig states he has struggles with disguising as a human.
  • Master of Disguise: Nobody can ever tell he's actually a snake in people's clothing, just a boy with no arms.
  • One of the Kids: He's an adult snake (maybe) and his closest friends are three human kids whom he interacts with as equals. He has a youthful and energetic personality himself and is seen sharing numerous interests, such as watching cartoons in "Googas."
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: His disguise consists of a t-shirt and baseball cap, but nobody notices he's a snake. And if Anthony Gourmand's POV is to be believed, as long as he's wearing his hat and shirt, everyone sees him as a normal (green) human child.
  • Real Men Wear Pink: He can be crude, gruff, and snarky, and he's the Manly Man to Sanjay's Sensitive Guy. Yet he too has a blast pampering himself using Darlene's make-up kit in "Dolled Up."
  • Sensitive Guy and Manly Man: He is tougher compared to Sanjay, being able to do more stunts and eat spicier food.
  • Talking Animal: A talking snake.
  • Vague Age: We're....not quite sure how old he is, really. In "Muscle C.O.P.S", when he and Sanjay are told that they can't participate in police activity because they're kids, Craig remarks "Pretty sure I'm an adult."

    Vijay Patel
Voiced by: Kunal Nayyar

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/vijayt.jpg

Sanjay's father who is Indian. He owns a clearance store in the neighborhood. He has invented various mechanicals, such as a party-obsessed, dancing robot, the Partybot.

  • Bollywood Nerd: He's from India, runs a discount merchandise store, invents in his spare time, and is overjoyed when Sanjay and Craig want to go to India to star in Remington Tufflips's movie, only to be disappointed when he discovers how much India has changed since his childhood. He eventually learns to adapt to the fact that things have changed and treasures the quailty bonding time he spent with his family, including Craig.
  • Like Father, Like Son: He's like his son in terms of personality even to this day. They're both cheery goofballs.
  • Masculine Girl, Feminine Boy: As seen in the first episode where Darlene is fascinated with the grossness of her hospital work and happily talks about it with her son, while Vijay feels sick just hearing about it.

    Darlene Patel
Voiced by: Grey DeLisle

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/16484306_fo5zh.png

Sanjay's mother who works at a hospital as a nurse and a surgeon. She often tells Sanjay stories about her work.

  • Action Mom: In "Butts Up" she competes against Noodman to save Craig and the other pets.
  • Berserk Button:
    • Has been seen to lose her mind during a power outage.
    • DO NOT wreck her room, or she will kill you!
  • Hospital Hottie: A rare example where she wears a modern outfit instead of the traditional uniforms.
  • Ink-Suit Actor: She bears more than a passing resemblance to her actress Grey DeLisle.
  • Masculine Girl, Feminine Boy: As seen in the first episode where Darlene is fascinated with the grossness of her hospital work and happily talks about it with her son, while Vijay feels sick just hearing about it.
  • Mama Bear: In "D.I.N.K" she immediately knows Sanjay and Craig are in danger, despite not seeing or hearing it.

    Hector Flanagan
Voiced by: Matt Jones

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/16484307_tt2cl.png

A chubby and goofy 12-year-old boy who is also one of Sanjay's friends. He wears an eye patch and has a soft and generous heart.

  • The Big Guy: Is clearly the largest of the kids.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: He is the goofiest and the silliest out of the gang.
  • Expy: He is similar to Gene Belcher, which isn't surprising given this show is from the same people behind Bob's Burgers.
  • Eyepatch of Power: For him at least, it's heavily implied that he's only wearing it for show. "2 Tuff 2 Watch" has him pretend to be awake by moving his patch to the other side and keeping a glass eye exposed, confirming he only has one eye.
  • Fat Best Friend: He's Sanjay human heterosexual life partner.
  • Fat Idiot: He's not the brightest of bulbs but he is quick enough to freestyle a rap about an egg timer.
  • Forceful Kiss: He gives one to Megan in "Cup O' Universe".

    Megan Sparkles
Voiced by: Linda Cardellini

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/16484308_feqkf.png

A 12-year-old girl who is one of Sanjay's best friends. She takes part in beauty pageants, among other talents. She is shown to have a crush on Sanjay.

  • Berserk Button: DO NOT mess around with her adorable gerbil, Booger Johnson, or she will kill you.
  • Disappeared Dad: Like Belle Pepper's mom, Megan's dad's status and whereabouts were never mentioned on the show.
  • Gamer Chick: "Combo Attack" reveals that she's very into video games, especially Spirit Animal Pro Fighter 2. She and Chido even start a video game-themed band together called Character Select, and make a song called "Press Start".
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: She isn't really a jerk, but she can get easily annoyed by her friends (especially Sanjay and Craig) and can have an attitude toward them at times, but it doesn't stop her from being best friends with them and coming through for them when they need help.
  • Love Interest: She's usually depicted as having a crush on Sanjay, but in some episodes, she seems to view him as a friend (and vice-versa).
  • Meaningful Name: Her last name is Sparkles; pretty fitting for someone who loves beauty pageants and girly things.
  • Odd Friendship: She forms one with Chido in "Combo Attack"; she's kind, liked by the other kids, and loves beauty pageants, whereas Chido is aggressive, feared by the other kids, and has no feminine interests. The two bond over video games, however, and Megan brings out a softer, more amiable side of Chido.
  • One of the Boys: Despite her girliness, she seems to not have any female friends other than Belle. Her three best friends are male, though she does wind up making friends with Chido in "Combo Attack", much to Sanjay, Craig, and Hector's surprise.
  • Only Sane Man: She's usually more levelheaded than her three best friends.

    The Dicksons
Sandy, Scabs, and Brenda voiced by: Grey DeLisle
Baby Richard voiced by: Nolan North

Three siblings who have a hard rock band called the "Tuff Skulls". Sandy and Scabs are fraternal twins who play the guitar, and their younger brother Baby Richard plays the drums. In addition, there is also their grotesque-looking mother, Brenda.

  • Hands-Off Parenting: Brenda usually lets her children do whatever they want, even if it means getting in toruble with the law.
  • Hidden Depths: Brenda usually acts like she doesn't care much about her children or what they do, even thworing a shoe at her daughter's face in a game show but in "Enter Sandman" it is revealed that she does love her children very much and tries to help them befriend Sanjay and Craig by telling them about how hard her kids were trying to impress them.
  • Tomboy: Sandy who outside of wearing a black dress behaves just like her brothers.
  • The Unintelligible:
    • Baby Richard makes these noises that kind of sound like baby gurgles mixed with grumbles from a sleazy ne'er-do-well.
    • Brenda only speaks through grunting and snorting. Averted in "Enter Sandman", where it is revealed that she actually can talk, but only when her kids aren't around. In fact, they don't believe that their mother has ever talked in her life.

    Leslie Noodman
Voiced by: Tony Hale

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/character_large_noodman332x363_2722.jpg

Sanjay and Craig's next door neighbor and mortal enemy who hates snakes and plans to get rid of Craig.

  • Abusive Parents: Noodman's father enjoyed torturing him with snakes when he was a kid. He still does it even when he's an adult.
  • Butt-Monkey: The poor guy never seems to catch a break from his father or Sanjay and Craig's pranks.
  • Child Hater: Not only does he hate snakes, he also hates children to a lesser extent (though this is because children remind him of snakes).
  • Sympathy for the Devil: After seeing how badly his father treats him at the family reunion, Craig actually feels bad for Leslie. Sanjay is less moved until he sees how devastated Leslie is, so the boys prank the old man.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Has a fixation for blueberries. He's even growing a whole garden of them in his yard.
  • Troll: He tries to torture Craig and him his worst nightmare. Though, this may be due to him being afraid of snakes and being tortured himself by his father. See Abusive Dad.
  • We Used to Be Friends: Much to Sanjay and Craig's surprise, Noodman was childhood friends with Darlene until they had a falling out.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: A literal example with Noodman. He hates snakes after being traumatized by his father.

    Remington Tufflips
Voiced by: Chris D'Elia, credited as Tufflips himself.

Sanjay and Craig's idol, a washed-up action movie hero who lives in a trailer park, but is nonetheless Lundgren's biggest celebrity.

  • Character as Himself: In the end credits. Though Jay Howell later revealed on his Instagram that the actual voice of Tufflips is Chris D'Elia.
  • Cool Shades: He wears a pair of black shades, even at night, and will rarely lower them.
  • Expy: He's a parody of Elvis Presley as he's gotten fatter over the years.
  • Gasshole: Of the burping variety, especially when he drinks buttermilk.
  • It's All About Me: As friendly as he is, he's pretty egotistical and self-centered. In "Booyah for Bollywood", when Ronnie Slithers has Sanjay and Craig strapped to a rocket and is about to send them to the moon, he (thinking it was a movie scene being shot), complains that he's the star and should be included in all scenes of the film, and unties Sanjay and Craig from the rocket only to put the attention back on himself. He winds up being the one sent to the moon!
  • Lazy Bum: All he does all day is drive around in his car when he's not lounging in the trailer park drinking buttermilk.
  • Walking Shirtless Scene: He only ever wears a pair of blue jeans, and shades. Wore shoes when he was in the movies though.

    Belle Pepper
Voiced by: Nika Futterman

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/16484305_dnfui.png

One of Sanjay's friends who works at the Frycade, Sanjay and Craig's favorite place to hang out. Sanjay has a crush on her.

  • Dude Magnet: Somewhat implied to be one. Besides Sanjay's crush on her, Hector's also been shown fawning over her, and a minor character named Tyson has a thing for her, much to Sanjay's chagrin.
  • Granola Girl: She certainly has shades of this. She adorns a hippie headband and in "2 Tuff 2 Watch", she's passionate about preserving a sanctuary for reptiles.

  • Jerkass Ball: She's uncharacteristically selfish and brash in "Fowl Work", where she pressures Sanjay into keeping her secret about throwing parties at the Frycade during its after hours, and reacts angrily and defensively toward him when he tries to talk some sense into her. She winds up confessing to her father about the parties, though, and explains that she was doing it because she felt overworked. Penny empathizes with her and starts giving her Fridays and weekends off.
  • Meaningful Name: Her name is a play on "bell pepper", which is a sweet pepper. Fittingly enough, she's a sweet, amiable Nice Girl. "Belle" is also a French word that comes from the Latin bella for "beautiful", and denotes a girl or woman who's admired for her beauty and charm. Belle Pepper is admired by Sanjay.
  • Missing Mom: Her mom's status and whereabouts were never revealed on the show.
  • Oblivious to Love: She doesn't seem to realize just how much Sanjay likes her.
  • Punny Name: Of "bell pepper", of course.
  • Redhead In Green: She's got reddish-orange hair and her regular outfit includes teal (greenish-blue) shorts.

    Sam Lastnamè
Voiced by: Tania Gunadi

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sl_2.jpg

One of Sanjay's friends who mostly serves as a background character. She made her debut in the Season 2 episode, "Butt's Up", and took the spotlight again in Season 3's "G.U.T.S. Busters".

  • Living Prop: Her only major appearances was her debut episode and the GUTS episode. For the rest the series, she's just used as a background character.

    Ronnie Slithers
Voiced by: Nolan North

Craig's long-lost brother who made his debut in the Season 1 finale, "A Tail of Two Slithers". He was extremely rich, as he was the former owner of a company called International Shovel which produces snake-killing shovels. (Despite the fact that he's supposed to be a snake).

  • Ax-Crazy: This gem, Craig even lampshades it.
Ronnie: I decided then and there, the way to get you back was to become a human too. And what's the most powerful human?
    Craig: Um...King Kong?
Ronnie: A HUMAN WITH A SHOVEL! AND WHO IS THE MOST POWERFUL HUMAN WITH A SHOVEL?
    Craig: Um...
Ronnie: I AM! I AM THE MOST POWERFUL HUMAN WITH A SHOVEL! AH AH AH I AM A POWERFUL HUMAN! I AM A SHOVEL!
Craig: Look at you! You're crazy!
  • Big Brother Instinct: Ronnie later develops this towards Craig and even Sanjay. He protects them from falling objects and loose tigers, getting hurt in the process.
  • Boomerang Bigot: In his debut episode, he once had some sort of hatred to his own kind, since he owned a company dedicated to killing snakes, and pretends to be a human being instead.
  • Cain and Abel: The Cain to Craig and Sanjay's Abel. He tries to kill Sanjay and Craig because their friendship offends his lonely nature.
  • Half-Dressed Cartoon Animal: During the events of "A Tail of Two Slithers", He refused to believe that he's a snake, and would rather be like a human.
  • Heel–Face Turn: At the end where he spares Sanjay and Craig's lives....for now
    • In the "Booyah for Bollywood" finale, he happily accepts Sanjay's and Craig's offer to join the family.
  • Happily Adopted: Not only does Craig accept Ronnie as his brother again, Sanjay does as well, and while Darlene and Vijay are more hesitant, they accept him as well.

    Lady Butterscotch

Mr. Noodman's pet cat who is very admired and obsessed over by him. She used to be Darlene's pet until Noodman won her in a game of Butt's Up.

    Tyson
Voiced by: David Hornsby

Sanjay's primary rival for Belle's affections. He carries a scooter in his pants, and speaks in a British accent.

  • The Bully: He's one for the lead quartet, Sanjay in particular.
  • Evil Brit: Downplayed. He's British, snooty, rude, and constantly tries to up-show Sanjay just because he can.
  • Jerkass: He's a dick to Sanjay and the gang for no reason other than he doesn't like them.
  • Only One Name: All he's ever referred to is "Tyson".
  • Patriotic Fervor: He's willing to take of his Union Flag swim briefs to be knighted by the "Queen" (read: Craig in a bad disguise), only to be humiliated when the ruse is up.

    Huggle Bunny
Voiced by Nolan North, despite the fact that he is apparently The Voiceless.

A mysterious, magical man in a bunny suit, who mostly serves as a carnival entertainer. The town of Lundgren celebrates a Christmas-like holiday centered around him, which they name "Huggle Day".

    Chido
Voiced by Natasha Lyonne in "Bike-O Psycho", Pamela Adlon in other episodes.

A sarcastic and tough red-headed girl who has a soft side.

  • The Bully: Her debut episode, "Bike-o Psycho", establishes her as one.
    Sanjay: (Reading Chido's name on bicycle) Chid-do. What's a Chid-do?
    Chido: Chido. That's my name.
    Sanjay: Prove it!
Chido: (Grabs random kid on scooter) Say my name!
    Kid: Chido! (Runs away scared)
  • The Dreaded: Because of her bullying tendencies, she's seen as this by most of the other kids—though Megan is an exception, and it is her lack of fear of Chido that leads to the two of them becoming friends.
  • Fiery Redhead: She's tough, sarcastic, and has a pretty short temper.
  • Gamer Chick: As seen in "Combo Attack", she's very into video games, especially Spirit Animal Pro Fighter 2. She even starts a video game-themed band with Megan called Character Select, and they make a song called "Press Start".
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: She is viewed as a bully by most, but she actually has a very sympathetic side.
    • In "All Night Bummer Party", after telling Sanjay that "best friends are for dorks anyway", her face saddens, indicating that she wished to have a friend.
    • "Combo Attack" really presents her as a sympathetic, multi-faceted character. She doesn't hesitate to open up to and attempt to befriend Megan; when the latter goes to retrieve a skateboard from the former, Chido is the one to invite her to stay and hang out. After the two bond over music and video games, Chido makes every attempt to be a loyal friend to Megan, and it is implied at the end, that even after Megan expresses embarrassment over being seen with Chido, Chido accepts her apology and the two continue their friendship.
  • Joisey: Speaks with a tough-sounding New Jersey accent.
  • The Lad-ette: A G-rated, Nickelodeon-friendly version. She's a tomboyish, crass girl who loves to fight, spit, and make trouble.
  • Odd Friendship: She forms one with Megan in "Combo Attack"; she's aggressive, feared by the other kids, and has no feminine interests, whereas Megan is kind, liked by the other kids, and loves beauty pageants. The two bond over video games, however, and Megan brings out a softer, more amiable side of Chido.
  • Only One Name: Like Tyson, she was only ever referred to by one name, and in her case, it isn't specified if it's her actual first name or a nickname.
  • Tomboy: She's a rude, crude, aggressive bully who spits, picks fights, skateboards, plays electric guitar and video games, and doesn't appear to have anything in the way of femininity (aside from having a slight sensitive side).
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: The Tomboy to Megan's Girly Girl; she's aggressive and violent with no apparent feminine interests, while Megan (a Girly Girl with a Tomboy Streak), despite sharing many of her interests, is also into beauty pageants, wears a pink dress, and has an overall girlier demeanor.
  • Tomboyish Voice: Has a low-pitched, gravely voice.
  • Town Girls:
  • Wild Hair: Has big, messy red hair.
  • Youthful Freckles: Fittingly for a redhead, her cheeks are covered with freckles.

    Stasi Stuntman
Voiced by Janet Varney

A stuntgirl and famous student at the Stuntman School, with her mom and dad as the founders of the Stuntman School.

  • Huge Schoolgirl: She towers over the other 12 year-olds in Lundgren. (Sanjay, Hector, Megan, Sam, and Chido) Though she still looks quite short compared to Glen. (Who happens to have the body of a ripped grown man, despite the fact that he is apparently 12.)
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: The reason she is a stuntgirl and has a big ego is because of her overbearing parents. The end of her episode reveals (After hearing Sanjay's speech about how he has to be his own lead) that she wants to live her dream of doing stand-up comedy.

    Penny Pepper
Voiced by: John DiMaggio

The owner of The Frycade and Belle's father.

  • I Have Many Names: Her many nicknames include "G-Ma Dubz", "Old Mother Hubbard", "Mother in a Cupboard", "Rat Rider", and "Darlene's Mother".
  • Never Mess with Granny: Despite her age, she can keep up with her grandchildren. She also beats up a living and seemingly dangerous Conquistador statue in "Conquistador" to protect her family, before finding out that the statue isn't malevolent as previously thought. A dance party ensues.

    Noodman's Father
Voiced by: John DiMaggio

The very abusive seventy-year-old father of Leslie Noodman. He enjoys making his son's life miserable by pranking him with his fear of snakes.

  • Abusive Dad: Torments his son any chance he gets, whether it's throwning snakes at him or humiliating him in front of his girlfriend. It runs in the family as his father abused him.

  • Carpet of Virility: He's a very hairy man; his chest hair looks like it's going up his neck.
  • '80s Hair: His hair is very long and very wild.
  • Hidden Depths: In "Guitar Zeroes" he turns out to be a skilled rock guitarist who gave up the rock lifestyle due to his crazed fans.
  • The Rock Star: What he used to be as seen in "Guitar Zeros"
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Penny's wings. Their friendship hits a rough patch when Chicken Chuck wants to change them.
