Main Characters

    Yuichi Usagi

Voiced by: Darren Barnet

A young and impulsive descendant of the legendary samurai Miyamoto Usagi who comes to the city of Neo-Edo seeking to become a legendary samurai himself.

  • Ambiguously Absent Parent: It's never stated what exactly happened to his parents, however, they are not in a position to care for him (if they're even alive) and he was raised by his aunt as a result.
  • Badass Biker: Downplayed. Usagi is a samurai-in-training who owns a steam cycle but he only really uses it as mode of transportation rather than for any badass feats, and his personality doesn't line up with ones that usually go hand in hand with this trope.
  • Big "WHAT?!": He does that in few episodes.
  • Big Brother Instinct: To Kitsune.
  • Catchphrase: "Ikuzo!" which is the Japanese equivalent of "Let's go!". He often says it just before engaging in a fight.
  • Character Development: He starts out the series very impulsive, often not thinking about the consequences of his actions, and sees yokai as all-around villains. As Season 1 goes on, however, he makes an effort to try and think things through, and becomes much less judgmental of yokai after meeting ones who aren't truly evil, which eventually leads to him potentially sabotaging his chance to be trained by Karasu-Tengu because he cannot in good conscience capture a demon she told him to, due to them making an effort to change (the demon actually being Karasu-Tengu herself, gauging Yuichi's character).
  • The Charmer: To Chizu, when he tells her "You've had a lot of training." in Episode 2 of Season 1.
  • Country Mouse: He has trouble adjusting to Neo-Edo early on.
  • Farm Boy: Grew up on a farm, raised by his aunt. Unlike most versions of this trope, Usagi Jumped at the Call.
  • Identical Grandson: If we take the comics into account, then Yuichi strongly resembles Usagi's cousin Yamamoto Yukichi (who was introduced in 2021 because of the show).
  • Inferiority Superiority Complex: Shows hints of this throughout the show. Most notably in Runaway Training.
  • Killer Yo-Yo: When given a choice of sacred weapons he impulsively grabs a yo-yo, which proves a good choice as it's magnetized and can capture yokai.
  • Leeroy Jenkins: He has a tendency to rush into things without thinking.
  • Meaningful Name: Like his ancestor before him, he is named “Usagi”. The Japanese word for “Rabbit”.
  • Mr. Imagination: In the earlier episodes he has a tendency to get lost in his own fantasies. He grows out of it.
  • Named After Somebody Famous: By the time Samurai Rabbit takes place, "Usagi" has apparently become the family name of Yuichi, replacing "Miyamoto". So all Miyamoto Usagi's direct descendants by then are this by default, doubtless being named after his given name. (Also the show uses traditional Japanese name order for him but not for Yuichi.)
  • Nephewism: Raised by his elderly Disabled Badass aunt.
  • Oblivious Guilt Slinging: To Gen in Runaway Training. He also makes a few negative comments about ninja in front of Chizu prior to knowing her history.
  • Righteous Rabbit: Even more than his ancestor.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: Early on he fantasizes about himself being an Invincible Hero and has a high opinion over his frankly juvenile skills as a Samurai. Even after getting trained by a sensei he still shows signs of this, albeit he's matured quite a bit.

    Spot

Usagi's pet tokage, a small long-necked lizard/dinosaur-like creature.

  • Inexplicably Tailless: Averts this trope while all the other characters play it straight. Justified as he is more animalistic rather than humanoid.
  • Satellite Character: Spot doesn't have much in way of a personality, and primarily exists to he Usagi's pet.
  • Team Pet: To Usagi and the other protagonists.

A rhinoceros bounty hunter whom Usagi gets into a fight with shortly after arriving in the city.

  • Bounty Hunter: He's a licensed bounty hunter, and Usagi first meets him arresting a criminal.
  • Freudian Excuse: Season 2 gives some insight into his hypochondria. His parents were well-regarded doctors who fell out of favor and were basically run out of town when they aided a convicted criminal, and the hospital reminds him of simpler times and make him feel safe.
  • Half-Identical Twins: His sister Toshiko looks almost exactly like him, to the point where Usagi mistook her for a shapeshifting yokai at first.
  • Hypochondria: Every time he gets the slightest injury or feels a little ill he wants to go to the hospital. The exception being his horn cut off, he's more concerned about a cut on his pinky finger then.
  • Swiss-Army Appendage: After his horn is sliced off in episode three he gets a bunch of interchangeable prosthetics including a buzzsaw and a headlamp.
  • Terrifiedof Germs: He is scared of them, even if he is scared of "death-germs" and "ghost-germs".
  • Working Off the Debt: After taking on the debt his sister had taken up with the Bat Gang to buy back their family home. After saving the Bat Gang's leader in the season 2 finale, the debt is forgiven.

    Kitsune

A fox street performer, and thief, who gets entangled into Usagi's adventures early on.

  • Ambiguously Gay: Kitsune never shows any romantic interest in the male characters, but her relationship with Chizu has some rather heavy subtext to it.
  • Big Sister Instinct: In season 2 she adopts a biomech egg and names it Kiyoko, protecting it from others who see it as a threat, even after it hatches.
  • Combat Hand Fan: Her favored weapons, adapted from her performances.
  • Chekhov's Skill: Kitsune's puppeteering skills prove useful for piloting a Humongous Mecha.
  • Cunning Like a Fox: She's a sneaky little fox who relies on her wits in fights.
  • Meaningful Name: In Japanese folklore a Kitsune is a type of mischievous fox spirit.
  • Pseudo-Romantic Friendship: Her relationship with Chizu has a lot of subtext, but nothing has been explicitly confirmed one way or the other.
  • Sticky Fingers: A habitual pickpocket.
  • Street Performer: First introduced putting on a puppet show in the streets, with some "hidden fees."

    Chizu

A cat who serves the keeper of the Keystone that provides Neo-Edo's power, secretly a ninja.

  • Ambiguously Bi: She gets a small amount of Ship Tease with Usagi, but her relationship with Kitsune has some heavy subtext to it.
  • Big Sister Instinct: To Kitsune and Kiyoko, although the "sisterly" aspect with Kitsune is debatable.
  • Feminine Women Can Cook: In Episode 7, Belly of the Beast.
  • Friendless Background: Enforced by her ninja master, when she tried befriending another student they were separated forcefully.
  • Hartman Hips: Her hips are wider than her shoulders.
  • Highly-Visible Ninja: She wears bright red leather all the time, even when posing as a janitor.
  • Implied Love Interest: To Usagi. In episode 10, she holds him to wake him up, thinking he was dead. But when he woke up, she hugged him, much to his shock. It is implied that she has a crush on Usagi.
  • Team Mom: Not so much to the gang itself, but to the Neko Ninja kids after she takes over leadership of the clan - which was motivated in the first place by her not wanting other kids to suffer the same abusive upbringing she did.
  • The Mole: Her job as the Keystone keeper's apprentice was just a cover for infiltrating the keep for the ninja clan.
  • Naginatas Are Feminine: Her primary weapon is a naginata with a collapsible shaft.
  • No Social Skills: As seen when she tries to apologize for deceiving her new friends. She thought the throwing knives the other ninjas tried to kill them with was an appropriate gift.
  • Pseudo-Romantic Friendship: While she acts as an Implied Love Interest to Usagi, she and Kitsune have this kind of relationship.
  • Walking Armory: Aside from her naginata she also carries a bunch of more "traditional" ninja weapons including a kusuri-gama, several shuriken and throwing knives, and a miniature crossbow up her sleeve. She adds an Energy Bow in season 2
  • World's Most Beautiful Woman: Her feline beauty and appearance.
