The Witches of Qlipha

The 10 Witches of Qlipha who brought about the Curses ravaging the world. All of them were once normal girls or witches who were simply living their own lives until they suffered a great deal of emotional distress which resulted in their curses. Most of the time, it's up to the Successor to save them from their own curses before it engulfs them and their respective home countries.

In order of appearance from 10 to 1, they are Natasha, Lunalynn, Valeriede, A.A, Fortina, Ophelia, Cerberus, Rusalka, Armstrong and Elfriede. Later on, Illya becomes no. 11 with the designation of 0 when she absorbs all 10 of their curses into herself.

Later on as the Successor journeys beyond Adria, a new set of Witches of Qlipha are encountered; bringing their home continents to the brink of destruction after hearing the voices of demons in their heads that also provide their power. To date, the only known member of this group is Paladea.

Tropes specific to the Witches of Qlipha
  • 20 Bear Asses: Unlike the other Witches who do not necessarily need duplicates of themselves to increase their rarity (and therefore their strength), the Witches of Qlipha need duplicates in order to raise their powers. Lots of them. Additionally, because they're Rare Random Drops with majority of them also Temporary Online Content to boot, many guides explicitly warn F2P players that raising them is very risky due to the number of gems required to get as many copies of them as possible (which can be a lot). However, some of them can be very powerful once raised to their full potential, and with the right setup can be potential MVPs in battle.
  • Another Side, Another Story: Lunalynn, Valeriede, A.A, Fortina, Ophelia and Cerberus's Character Memories are intertwined with Soltina, Belle, Mertillier, Florence, Amleth and Fenrir's stories respectively.
  • Arc Villain: Each country is ravaged by a curse from one of them. In order to move on to the next one, the Successor has to confront them and save them from themselves via defeat in combat.
  • Despair Event Horizon:
    • First, take a random girl with latent powers. Then, send her hurling past this by putting her in severe emotional trauma - the death of a loved one, for example. The result is a Witch of Qlipha ready to destroy the cruel world with her curse.
    • Alternatively, get a demon to whisper sweet temptations and lies in a random girl's head that will eventually drive them beyond the DEH, giving her enough power to wreck an entire continent.
  • Defeat Means Friendship: And for a few of them, romance as well.
  • "Do It Yourself" Theme Tune: All of their Laments are sung by their respective voice actresses in Japanese. Averted for the English dub, at least in the case of those whose singers are known.
  • Elemental Powers: They have different elemental abilities which are reflected in their Laments and Curses. In-game, they're simply split into Radiance and Chaos Aura types.
  • Exotic Eye Designs: The Witches of Qlipha's left eye turns white with their assigned Roman numeral/black with their assigned Astrological symbol as the pupil once their powers awaken. After being purified of their curse the left eye turns back to normal.
  • From Nobody to Nightmare: The majority of them were innocent girls who then went through a lot of trauma, awakening their powers which laid ruin to their respective countries. Most of them happen because of the Witch Hunts.
  • Guardian Angel: Illya (Another)'s Character Memory story reveals that all of them have one residing in them when they awaken their powers and start spreading their curses, which might also explain the Unusual Haloes. However, only A.A's is mentioned by name to be Haniel, the Angel of Love.
  • Mark of the Supernatural: The Adrian Witches of Qlipha have Roman numerals as the pupil of their left eye which indicates the order of their appearance while those outside have an astrological symbol in the same eye. This disappears upon being purified by the Staff.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Coupled with It's All My Fault. Majority of the Witches of Qlipha, especially those with loved ones, are horrified to learn about the consequences of their Curses when the Successor explains what happened after their purification. However, they're reassured that it wasn't their fault that the Curses happened, and their memories end with them settling in the Successor's estate, ready to start anew.
  • Numerical Theme Naming: Their songs have Roman numerals before their song title indicating the order in which they appear, which also appears in their left eye when faced by the Successor. While Paladea bucks the trend by having an astrological symbol instead, her Lament title still follows the numerical order from 11 onwards as Illya is not counted among the Adrian Witches of Qlipha.
  • Power Incontinence: Since the power of a Witch of Qlipha is immense, once they awaken their powers go out of control because of the added emotional baggage that came with it. After being purified by the Staff, they can control their powers better but sometimes it still gets the best of them.
  • Promoted to Playable: Except for Natasha and Lunalynn who appeared on launch and are permanent characters, the other Witches of Qlipha start off as bosses and eventually were made playable over time.
  • Rare Random Drop: Because they're all either Radiance or Chaos Aura witches, neither of them can be chosen in the gacha wishlist, they have their own separate category in the Invocation of Chance/The Stars' Guidance and other than Natasha and Lunalynn, the rest of them are limited-time characters. As Natasha is given for free to everyone when they start the game, this makes Lunalynn the rarest permanent character.
  • Sampling: Except for Illya, all of their Laments are based from Classical Music, hymns or folk songs.
    • Rock Me, Amadeus!: In particular, Natasha, Lunalynn, Valeriede, Cerberus, Armstrong and Paladea so far have their Laments derived from classical music.
  • Unusual Halo: All of them have one, each with an aesthetic based on their abilities.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: The younger ones were definitely sweet before their awakening as Witches of Qlipha. Once purified, they go back to being sweethearts, though some of the damage caused during their time as Witches of Qlipha did stick with them. Older examples include Valeriede and Elfriede.
  • Western Zodiac: Seemingly the motif of the new set of Witches of Qlipha as Paladea's left eye has the astrological symbol for Aries.

Witches Ⅹ to Ⅰ (Continent of Adria)

    Natasha

X: The Witch of Mourning Flowers

Aura: Radiance
Rarity: SR -> LR
Type: Warrior
Height and Weight: 138cm / 32kg
Blood Type: A
Birthday: 6/8
Lament: X. THE FLOWER (JP by Yui Ogura; EN)
Voiced by: Yui Ogura (JP); Brenna Larsen (EN)

Once the shy and introverted daughter of gardeners who once worked at the Duke's mansion, now the 10th Witch of Qlipha, the Witch of Mourning Flowers who inflicted the Curse of Flowers on the Duchy of Fran. With only her flowers to comfort her after the Witch Hunt killed her parents, she came to believe that covering the world with flowers will bring happiness and unity to everyone.

Natasha uses her power over floral life to devastate her enemies and mourn the loss of her parents. Her first active "Floral Burial" turns flowers meant for mourning the dead into mourning for the living by dealing 3 physical attacks equal to up to 595% of her ATK to random enemies, eventually spanning the entire board. Additionally, if her target(s) has a lower STR than her, there is an additional 50% chance to inflict [Fainted] for 1 turn. Her second active "Lots of Pretty Flowers" stems from the belief that everyone will be happy if the world was filled with pretty flowers, which is reflected via dealing 1 physical attack equal to up to 530% of her ATK to 3 random enemies, eventually attacking all of them. At level 2, if a target's has less than 20% of their HP left, they receive an additional direct attack equal to 340% of her STR.

Natasha's first passive "Mom and Dad's Love" uses her deceased parents' love to protect her by decreasing the damage she takes by up to 40% if her HP is below 50%, while her despair that resulted in her becoming the "Witch of Mourning Flowers" is her 2nd passive that nourishes her flowers and increases her ATK by up to 40%, which eventually also increases her critical hit damage by up to 40%.

Natasha's Unique Weapon is her "Scythe of Grave Blossoms". When equipped, it strengthens "Floral Burial" by increasing its chances of inflicting [Fainted] by up to 75% and increases its physical damage to 610%.

  • Arc Villain: For the Duchy of Fran, in which she choked the land with her Curse of Flowers.
  • Creepy Child: Being a Witch of Qlipha who can cause untold amounts of destruction and all.
  • Deceased Parents Are the Best: She had a happy life with her parents before the Witch Hunts came for her family.
  • Family of Choice: Although she tries to connect with the Successor and the witches for being nice to her and move on from her parents' deaths, she could not fully go through with it. It's only when the Successor gives her a simple "Welcome home, Natasha." one day that she tearfully but finally registers the mansion as her new home and opens up to her new family.
  • Fill It with Flowers: A negative example; this is her Curse of Flowers in a nutshell. After her parents died protecting her from the Church of Longinus, Natasha decides that since flowers are the only thing left in the world that she loves, if she can fill the world with her flowers everyone will be happy and get along with one another. Thanks to the Successor, she gets better.
  • Girlish Pigtails: To symbolize her as the newest of the Witches of Qlipha and one of the youngest members.
  • Green Thumb: Her powers involve flowers, and her Curse suffocates the land with them.
  • Precocious Crush: Though younger than most witches, her last Memory has her talking to her parents that she's found someone she likes but is keeping it secret (he's someone nice to everyone and is popular with witches, hint, hint).
  • Sampling: Her Lament samples from Bach's Minuet in G major.
  • Shrinking Violet: An incredibly shy girl who can be very attached to the ones she loves.
  • Starter Villain: She's the first Witch of Qlipha faced by the Successor.
  • Talking to the Dead: Her Memories frame some of her monologues as this, sadly addressing her long deceased parents about missing them after being taken in by the Successor. She still does it by the last Memory, but in a more cheerful way after getting used to her new life as a witch.

    Lunalynn

Ⅸ: The Witch of Snowy Illusions

Aura: Chaos
Rarity: SR -> LR
Type: Sorcerer
Height and Weight: 167cm / 43kg
Blood Type: O
Birthday: 2/7
Lament: Ⅸ. THE ICE (JP by Kaede Hondo; EN)
Voiced by: Kaede Hondo (JP); Kate Clarke (EN)

Soltina's caring big sister who let herself be captured by the Church of Longinus's Inquisition in order to let her escape. Under the extremely cruel tortures of the Inquisition, she becomes the 9th Witch of Qlipha, the Witch of Snowy Illusions and froze not just her heart, but the whole of the Principality of Brook with her.

Lunalynn utilizes her powers over ice to protect Soltina and freeze everything in her way. Her first active "Ice Coffin" locks her despairing heart in ice and sends a chilling air towards her enemies by dealing 1 magical attack equal to 300% of her ATK once fully upgraded to all enemies, adding a [Silence] debuff it it's a Critical Hit for 1 turn. Her second skill "Blizzard of Despair" drowns anyone caught in it by dealing 1 magical attack equal to 285% of her ATK once fully upgraded to all enemies and if any of them has lower MAG than her they get poisoned for up to 3 turns, dealing damage equal to 15% of their health at max. level when the action phase begins.

Lunalynn's first passive "Sisterly Bond" is a testament to her love for Soltina by increasing her allies' PDEF by up to 20% as long as she lives, while her second passive "Frozen Heart" decreases the damage she takes by up to 40% by encasing her heart in cold ice and at level 2 also increases her HP drain by 25%.

Getting Lunalynn's Unique Weapon "Lunasphere" strengthens "Ice Coffin" by increasing her chance to deal critical hits by up to 40% before dealing its magical attack and prolongs [Silence] to 3 turns instead of 1.

  • Arc Villain: Of the Principality of Brook chapters. To move on to the next world, the player has to defeat both her and Soltina in a Dual Boss fight
  • Apologizes a Lot: She's quick to apologize for everything. Even when it's for apologizing too much. Both her Victory and Defeat lines are also of her apologizing.
    "I’m sorry… Huh? I haven’t done anything wrong, so I don’t need to apologize? I-I’m sorr—ahh… Oh…"
  • Big Sister Instinct: Everything she does, she does it for Soltina. Up to and including letting herself be captured by the Inquisition of Longinus while Soltina escapes.
  • Cool Big Sis: If anyone asks Soltina about Lunalynn, it's clear that Soltina views her very positively despite her lack of self-confidence.
  • Fairytale Motifs: If Soltina is Gerda from The Snow Queen, Lunalynn is a composite of both Kai and the titular Snow Queen from the same story. Lunalynn, under the tortures of the Inquisition, started resenting Soltina, similar to Kai getting a piece of an evil magic mirror in his eye and starts seeing the bad in the world, followed by getting frozen in ice. Her "Snow Queen" aspects comes from her loneliness and her powers. .
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: She doesn't have a positive view of herself.
  • An Ice Person: Lunalynn has powers over ice, and her curse turned the Principality of Brook from a woodland into an icy wasteland.
  • In the Hood: Lunalynn's outfit consists of a cloak with a hood, to match her lonely nature.
  • Irony: When the Inquisition comes knocking for Soltina, Lunalynn believes that she can buy time for her to escape since she herself isn't a witch. A lot of torture from the Inquisition later, she becomes the 9th Witch of Qlipha.
  • Lethal Chef: Even before she got her powers, she wasn't very good at cooking. After being rescued by the Successor and Soltina, she decides to try her hand at it in order to repay their kindness but fails because everything she touches ends up turning into ice.
  • Magikarp Power: Lunalynn is useless for the most part early on. And by early on we mean until you get her unique weapon, level (or level link) her to level 240 or above, and obtain enough duplicates to get her rarity to at least UR, which is no small feat, all things considered. Then the [Silence] her Ice Coffin inflicts on enemies on a Critical Hit lasts for 3 turns instead of 1, making her extremely vital for clearing the later stages, as you can then take out opponents before they even have a chance to unleash their skills.
  • Power Makes Your Voice Deep: Lunalynn's voice is noticeably deeper as a boss Witch of Qlipha compared to her normal self.
  • Rare Random Drop: Lunalynn is currently the rarest permanent character in the game. She's the sole permanent Chaos Aura witch, and while she and Natasha cannot be picked with regular SR Witch's Invitations, Natasha is a pre-registration bonus - making her the hardest to get unless the player uses a L-rarity Witch's Invitation. This means that the only ways to get her are from the gacha and using gold Witch Shards, in turn making her the hardest character to raise to LR to date since being the sole character of your Aura type means that awakening requires lots of duplicates.
  • Sampling: Lunalynn's Lament ends with the familiar reverb from Tchaikovsky's Dance of the Swans from Swan Lake.
  • Stellar Theme Naming: Soltina and Lunalynn. Sun and Moon. Get it?

    Valeriede

Ⅷ: The Witch of Conflagration

Aura: Chaos
Rarity: SR -> LR
Type: Warrior
Height and Weight: 165cm / 47kg
Blood Type: O
Birthday: 1/12
Lament: Ⅷ. THE FIRE (JP by Rie Tanaka; EN by Jenn Sakura)
Voiced by: Rie Tanaka (JP); Stephanie Novak (EN)

Valeriede was once an orphanage director who took in abandoned kids off the streets of the Republic of Nedel and raised them with the care that they needed. However, after she took in a girl who was ostracized by everyone else through the Witch Hunts, the upper elite who already looked down on the orphans burnt down the orphanage they called home, killing all the children living in it. Enraged by their greed, Valeriede awakened her powers as the 8th Witch of Qlipha, the Witch of Conflagration, and set the entirety of Nedel on fire with her Curse of Flames, burning down the wealth they were once proud of.

To avenge the deaths of the orphan children she loved, Valeriede will raze the earth with her flames. Her 1st active "Explosive Nemesis" takes on the form of a flame ignited by her dormant thirst for revenge and deals 8 physical attacks equal to up to 215% of her ATK to 1 random enemy, then restores HP equal to up to 25% of the skill's total damage to her. Her rage manifests in her 2nd active "Fire Dragon's Wail" by dealing 3 physical attacks equal to 480% of her ATK once fully upgraded to the enemy with the lowest HP percentage; if it doesn't defeat them they receive another 3 which stops upon defeat, with an additional physical attack equal to up to 480% of her ATK to the remaining 4 will be dealt if they do die through it.

Valeriede's 1st passive "Fervent Blaze" is her desire to prevent another tragedy by increasing her ATK up to a max of 70% the higher her remaining HP percentage is, while her memories of her time as the "Witch of Conflagration" is her 2nd passive that decreases the damage taken by up to 10% and grants her [Regeneration] for 3 turns which restores HP equal to 20% of her max HP after upgrades until her remaining HP percentage is 90% or higher, in which it's dispelled.

Once Valeriede obtains her unique weapon "Fists of Conflagration", "Explosive Nemesis" will deal 10 physical attacks equal to up to 240% of her ATK instead.

  • Arc Villain: To move on from the Republic of Nedel, you need to extinguish her wrathful flames.
  • Curtains Match the Window: Fiery-red hair and eyes; appropriately for someone with fire powers.
  • Elemental Hair Colors: Valeriede has hair the color of flames, and she's the Witch of Conflagration who set her Curse of Flames on the Republic of Nedel.
  • Fiery Redhead: Quite appropriate, considering her powers.
  • Friend to All Children: Before awakening her powers as the Witch of Conflagration, Valeriede ran an orphanage in the slums of Nedel which provided shelter to orphan children.
  • Mighty Glacier: Valeriede can hit VERY hard. Unfortunately, the only thing stopping her from being used all the time is the speed in which they come; more often than not she's usually one of the, if not the last party member to use her skills each turn so if the enemy manages to get to her first she may not have a chance to attack at all.
  • Parental Substitute: She was this to the orphan children prior to her awakening, and she still is to Belle.
  • Playing with Fire: In contrast to Lunalynn who was fought in the world next to hers, Valeride can control fire and her curse engulfed the Republic of Nedel in flames.
  • Promoted to Playable: Valeriede became playable at last on 15 November 2022, allowing players to reunite her with Belle.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: The wealthy nobility burnt the orphanage she built and killed the children she raised with kindness. Her response? Set the Curse of Flames on the entire country for trampling on the weak.
  • Sampling: Valeriede's Lament takes cues from Bach's "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring".

    A.A.

Ⅶ: The Witch of Rust

Aura: Chaos
Rarity: SR -> LR
Type: Sorcerer
Height and Weight: 134cm / 29kg
Blood Type: A
Birthday: 2/29
Lament: Ⅶ. THE RUST (JP by Minori Chihara; EN by Ziyi Wu)
Voiced by: Minori Chihara (JP); Katie McLoughlin (EN)

"I am just a puppet."

An artificial Witch created in the Kingdom of Byrune, a nation known for its scientific progress, A.A. lived her entire life as an experiment with her creator, Professor Mertillier. Despite her emotionless state, she clearly loved Mertillier as though she was her mother. So when she died during an experiment, A.A.'s grief turned her insane, awakened her powers as the 7th Witch of Qlipha, the Witch of Rust, and destroyed Byrune with her Curse of Rust.

Under directed commands, A.A utilizes her saberwings and the guardian angel in her to defeat her enemies. Her 1st active "Severing Rust" has A.A swing her saberwings effortlessly, spreading rust and dealing up to 4 magical attacks equal to up to 710% of her ATK at random enemies. Upon invoking her 2nd active "Limiter Release", A.A releases her magical power in the form of destructive rust by dealing 1 direct attack equal to up to 420% of her MAG to 4 random enemies while restoring HP equal to up to 20% of its total damage to her.

Being "The Perfect Specimen", A.A's 1st passive of that name turns her her basic attack into one that deals 1 direct attack equal to up to 220% of her MAG to 1 random enemy while her "Angel of Love" that is her 2nd passive protects her by cutting enemy damage towards her by up to 55% and lasts until the end of the 1st turn (2nd at level 2).

Upon equipping A.A's Unique Weapon "Saberwings of Rust", her chances of hitting increases to 40%, "Angel of Love" cuts enemy attacks by 85% and "Limiter Release"'s direct attack damage is increased to 450% of her MAG.

  • Arc Villain: For the chapters in the Kingdom of Byrune.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Mertillier calls her "A-chan" (JP)/"Little A" (EN).
  • Artificial Human: A.A. is a homunculus created in a lab by Mertillier.
  • Emotionless Girl: Although she's slowly learning how to emote by Mertillier.
  • Extra-ore-dinary: To be precise, she has powers over rust. When she went lost control of her powers and went insane, she singlehandedly destroyed the Kingdom of Byrune by unleashing her curse which turned everything into rust.
  • Guardian Angel: A.A was made to host Haniel, the Angel of Love by the demon-possessed Elfriede. Little did she and Mertillier know that Haniel residing in her was 1 step to awakening the former as a Witch of Qlipha.
  • Promoted to Playable: She was added on 15 February 2023, reuniting her with Mertillier.
  • Sampling: A.A.'s Lament is derived from the Finnish folk song Ievan Polkka, albeit in an orchestral/acoustic hybrid arrangement.
  • Say My Name: When Mertillier was stabbed by Elfriede with her spear. It later devolves into Madness Mantra, then cue transformation into a Witch of Qlipha.
  • Uniformity Exception: A.A. is the only artificially-created Witch among the cast.
  • Your Days Are Numbered: Normally, homunculi do not last very long, only living for about 3 days before expiring. Even though A.A managed to live way longer than the average homunculus, there may come a day when her miracle will run out.

    Fortina

Ⅵ: The Witch of Sacred Swords

Aura: Radiance
Rarity: SR -> LR
Type: Warrior
Height and Weight: 157cm / 43kg
Blood Type: O
Birthday: 8/22
Lament: Ⅵ. THE SWORD (JP by Yukana; EN)
Voiced by: Yukana (JP); Maureen Price (EN)

"May the Lord bless you..."

A kindhearted and very religious nun who views every moment of suffering as a trial from God, and so faces everything with utmost sincerity. Having been childhood friends with Florence, they share a powerful bond... until a visit to the Pope turned sour as Florence cut her down. This supposed betrayal then gave birth to the 6th Witch of Qlipha, the Witch of Sacred Swords, who condemned the Holy See of Hainz to its doom with her Curse of Swords in the form of blades that supposedly represent God's judgement.

Fortina uses her faith to assist her allies through prayer while striking down enemies with her holy swords. Her first active "Prayer of the Saint" grants all allies [Shield] equal to 150% of her ATK and [Regeneration] for up to 2 turns once upgraded. With her prayers, [Regeneration] restores HP equivalent to 7% of a target's max HP. Her second active "Haven of Divine Swords" has her use swords of light to deal God's judgement by dealing 1 physical attack equal to 380% of her ATK to the enemy with the highest remaining HP percentage, while also restoring HP equal to 120% of the skill's total damage to the ally with the lowest remaining HP percentage. Once fully upgraded, it also deals 1 direct attack equal to 125% of her STR and reactivates if the enemy hasn't been defeated by it.

Through Fortina's prayers, her first passive "Veil of Sacred Swords" grants [Unhindered] to her for 2 turns once for every 5 turns, which is reduced to every 4 turns and also affects the ally with the highest ATK post-upgrade. Meanwhile, her second passive "Gift from God" has her devote prayers to her God's demanding trails, which increases her DEF and Counter by up to 20% once fully upgraded.

Once Fortina gets her hand on her Unique Weapon "Holy Cross", "Prayer of the Saint" gets a power boost in the form of expanding its [Shield] to up to 200% of her ATK and increasing its turns on allies whose remaining HP percentages are 50% or higher to 3.

  • Arc Villain: For chapters related to the Holy See of Hainz.
  • Badass Preacher: Despite everything that happened to her that could have broken her faith, she still continues to preach God, seeing all of life's hardships as His trials and doling out all the fighting that needs to be done as witch.
  • Barrier Maiden: Ironically for a Witch who conjures deadly swords, she prefers to protect others rather than fight. This is seen in her all her skills being defensively oriented (except for "Haven of Divine Swords", but even that comes with a healing effect at the end).
  • Childhood Friends: She and Florence have been inseparable when they were young, on top of being the only one Fortina saved from their Doomed Hometown. Unfortunately, the Pope had other ideas....
  • Irony:
  • Light 'em Up: Fortina's floating swords are made of light. According to her, the swords of light are representative of God's judgement.
  • Master of the Levitating Blades: She is the "Witch of Sacred Swords" after all. Her powers manifest in the form of the flying cruciform swords of light circling her.
  • Promoted to Playable: After being mentioned time and again by Florence, Fortina became playable on 21 October 2022.
  • Sampling: Fortina's Lament is essentially a Celtic version of the Jewish folk song Mayim, Mayim.

    Ophelia

V: The Witch of Fallen Crystals

Aura: Chaos
Rarity: SR -> LR
Type: Warrior
Height and Weight: 169cm / 58kg
Blood Type: O
Birthday: 4/23
Lament: V. THE CRYSTAL (JP by Yui Ishikawa; EN)
Voiced by: Yui Ishikawa (JP); Heather Gonzalez (EN)

Queen Amleth's royal guard since her birth, Ophelia is proud, devoted to her duties, stern and rigid. However, when defending the Kingdom of Vyde from the Calamity, her feelings for Amleth were exploited by the Pope, turning her into the 5th Witch of Qlipha, the Witch of Fallen Crystals, and instead wrecked havoc on the very country she was supposed to protect.

Once used to destroy, Ophelia now uses her fallen Crystals to protect Queen Amleth. Her 1st active "Eyes Led Astray" has her cursed crystal blade deal 1 physical attack equal to up to 380% of her ATK to 5 enemies while also restoring HP equal to 20% of her max HP to her at level 2. Her 2nd active "Crystal Tide" has Ophelia send a shockwave from her blade that deals 1 physical damage equal to up to 760% of her ATK to 1 random enemy, with the fallen crystals that result decreasing its ATK by up to 40% for a max. of 3 turns.

With unyielding determination to protect her beloved Queen Amleth, if Ophelia's remaining HP percentage is 60% or higher, her 1st passive "Keeper of Oaths" grants [Taunt] to her and decreases her chance to evade by 50% for 2 turns, guaranteeing that she receives enemy attacks dealt to 1 or more random targets, though upgrading it also decreases damage taken by 30% and increases her Counter by 50%. Upon her "Royal Guard's Honor" of her 2nd passive, Ophelia serves as Amleth's shield by increasing her max HP and CRIT RES by up to 40% and at max level she'll survive on 1 HP and increase all allies' PDEF by 40% by 1 turn if she takes damage that will normally defeat her.

Gifting Ophelia her Unique Weapon "Executioner" strengthens "Eyes Led Astray" by increasing her Debuff RES by up to 50% for 3 turns. Additionally, if Ophelia is attacked with a physical attack, her HP will be restored by 35% of the attack's damage unless said attack defeats her.

  • Arc Villain: She's responsible for the Curse of Crystals plaguing the Kingdom of Vyde and it's up to the Successor to put an end to that.
  • Childhood Friends: Even more so than the other Childhood Friend groups in the game; Ophelia and Amleth were inseparable since the latter was born.
  • Draw Aggro: In the name of protecting Queen Amleth, "Keeper of Oaths" redirects enemy attacks to her. Thankfully the skill makes her a Stone Wall as well.
  • Gemstone Assault: Ophelia is the "Witch of Fallen Crystals", she has the ability to manipulate crystals and her Curse involves raining crystals down on Vyde.
  • I Call It "Vera": Similar to how Amleth has her "Oathkeeper", Ophelia has a blade named "Executioner". It turns out that Executioner was originally Amleth's royal blade while OathKeeper was originally Ophelia's personal blade. Amleth and Ophelia actually swapped each other's blades as a part of Heroic Vow.
  • Lady and Knight: Ophelia is the Knight to Amleth's Lady, though if the need arises Amleth is also capable of defeating evil alongside her.
  • The Promise: Ophelia was asked by her Witch Queen Amleth to kill her with the royal blade called Executioner whose purpose is to strike down tyrants if a ruler ever becomes a tyrant. Ophelia naturally really didn't want to form a Mercy Kill Arrangement with Amleth, but she had to accept a royal decree. Ophelia, therefore, said to Amleth that just as Amleth has requested Ophelia to kill her with the royal blade called Executioner if she ever fell into tranny, Ophelia wants Amleth to kill her with her personal blade called OathKeeper if she ever betrays Queen's trust because she feels that she can't accept such cruel promise otherwise. Unknowingly to Amleth, however, Ophelia inwardly thought to herself that she would follow Amleth to the bitter end if the latter ever descend into tranny.
  • Promoted to Playable: She was added on 28 February 2023.
  • Sampling: Ophelia's Lament is inspired by Romance de Amor, otherwise known as the "Spanish Romance" or "Anonymous Romance" on account of its composer being unknown.
  • Stone Wall: Ophelia's role in a nutshell thanks to "Keeper of Oaths".
  • True Companions: Despite how Ophelia and Amleth do not have the same social ranks as a knight and a queen respectively, they consider each other as True Companions.

    Cerberus

Ⅳ: The Witch of Wailing Lightning

Aura: Radiance
Type: Warrior
Rarity: SR -> LR
Height and Weight: 140cm / 35kg
Blood Type: O
Birthday: 11/11
Lament: Ⅳ. THE THUNDER (JP by Shuka Saito; EN by Bianca Jazmine)
Voiced by: Shuka Saito (JP); Antoinette Senatore (EN)

"You're not going to pet my head today, master?"

A cute, puppy-like girl who is always wagging her tail for attention and is very dependent on her older sister, Fenrir, never leaving her side. After an incident led her to believe that she accidentally killed Fenrir, Cerberus fell into despair and became the 4th Witch of Qlipha, the Witch of Wailing Lightning, and struck the Lupus Confederacy with her Curse of Lightning.

Cerberus utilizes her lightning to protect her beloved sister from all harm. Her 1st active "Wailing Lightning Claws" has Cerberus deal up to 6 physical attacks equal to a maximum of 480% of her ATK to random enemies with her uncontrollable lightning, with her beastly claws piercing through defenses by decreasing a target's P.DEF by 50% for 1 turn if their STR is lower than hers. Her 2nd active "Storm of Tartarus" shoots bolts of cursed lightning that deals up to 5 physical attacks equal to up to 480% of her ATK and if the enemy survives the barrage, if their remaining HP is 15% or lower and their current HP is lower than 1500% of Cerberus's ATK, they'll be defeated immediately.

"It's okay, You don't have to be scared anymore" are Cerberus's "Magic Words" that is her 1st passive, which at max. level dispels all of her debuffs at turn 4, giving her [Debuff Immunity] for 2 turns if she does not have any debuffs then. On the other hand, Cerberus's 2nd passive "Uncontrollable Heart" unleashes her godly wrath by increasing her ATK by 40% and increases her chance to deal critical hits by 20% when fully upgraded.

Upon obtaining Cerberus's Unique Weapon "Thor's Hammer", the physical attack's damage from "Wailing Lightning Claws" increases to 520% of her ATK and if the enemy is defeated by it her critical hit damage is increased to up to 60% for 2 turns.

  • Accidental Murder: Cerberus thought she did this to Fenrir when they were fighting monsters. This led Cerberus's awakening into the 4th Witch of Qlipha. Don't worry, Fenrir's fine.
  • Affectionate Gesture to the Head: Cerberus loves it when someone she likes gives her headpats. Her Establishing Character Moment especially has her ask the Successor to give her headpats.
  • Arc Villain: For the Lupus Confederacy stages.
  • Big Sister Worship: Cerberus loves Fenrir as much as Soltina loves Lunalynn. When Cerberus awakened her powers for the first time, she thought she accidentally killed Fenrir in the process and this was the trigger for her transformation into the Witch of Wailing Lightning.
  • Call-Back: Before the final verse in Cerberus's Lament, the melody to the chorus of Fenrir's Lament can be heard. Justified, both of them are sisters.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: Discounting her boss fight, she first appears in a Christmas-related event in the Temple of Illusions where she's fought alongside Fenrir.
  • It's All My Fault: Cerberus became a Witch of Qlipha because she mistakenly believed that she killed Fenrir by accident. As it turns out, Fenrir was actually fine and both sisters were eventually reunited with the help of the Successor.
  • Parental Abandonment: When she and Fenrir were younger, they were abandoned on a mountain filled with thunderstorms.
  • Promoted to Playable: She was added to the game on 17 January 2023, reuniting her with Fenrir.
  • Shared Family Quirks: Both she and Fenrir enjoy headpats. Cerberus in particular loves it when Fenrir and/or the Successor are the ones giving the headpats, and her very first lines when you obtain her in the gacha and when you log in are her asking you to pet her head.
  • Shock and Awe: Cerberus has powers over lightning and she's the cause of the Curse of Lightning that tormented the Lupus Confederacy.
  • Sampling: Fittingly for someone with powers over lightning, Cerberus's Lament begins with a clarinet solo of Gustav Holst's Jupiter, The Bringer of Jollity from The Planets.
  • Truck Driver's Gear Change: Her Lament notably changes keys towards the final chorus.

    Rusalka

Ⅲ: The Witch of Torrential Sorrow

Aura: Radiance
Rarity: SR -> LR
Type: Sorcerer
Height and Weight: 161cm / 39kg
Blood Type: AB
Birthday: 6/11
Lament: Ⅲ. THE RAIN (JP by Ayaka Ohashi; EN)
Voiced by: Ayaka Ohashi (JP); Amber Lee Connors (EN)

A girl who keeps her distance from others as a result of having been betrayed by someone she loved (her elder brother) and offered as a sacrifice by him. Because of this, her awakening as the 3rd Witch of Qlipha, the Witch of Torrential Sorrow, caused the Curse of Rain that has been submerging the Kingdom of Chekkos for nearly a century while she slumbers at the bottom of a lake.

When Rusalka's around, the rain will not cease until her enemies are washed away. Her 1st active, "Kikimora's Downpour", has Rusalka summon a spirit from the bottom of the sea that sends down a cursed rain which putrefies anything it touches by dealing 1 magical attack equal to up to 480% of her ATK to 5 random enemies and has a 50% chance of inflicting [Decreased Damage Dealing] to a target by up to 15% for 1 turn (100% if the target's MAG is lower than Rusalka's own). Her 2nd active, "Vodnik's Mire Dragon", has Rusalka summon said savage water spirit from the dark depths of the sea and sends them to deal a maximum of 4 magical attacks equal to up to 470% of her ATK to random enemies that also multiplies by up to 2 if said target is inflicted with a debuff.

Clinging on to the hope that someone she can call her beloved will come for her even after being abandoned, betrayed and succumbing to the despair that caused the Curse of Rain, Rusalka's 1st passive "Maiden of Sacrifice" revives her when defeated with 10% of her max. HP and resets her skill cooldown time (unless she's defeated by a debuff) once, and at higher levels also grants her up to 5 layers of [Multi-Barrier], increases her ATK by 70% and SPD by 30%, and another layer of [Multi-Barrier] to every other ally in the party. Meanwhile, Rusalka's century-long tenure as the titular "Witch of Torrential Sorrow" is her 2nd passive that increases her PM. DEF Break by up to 50% for 3 turns at the start of the battle or when she's attacked and she has a remaining HP percentage lower than 30% (50% post-upgrade), which is dispelled when she's next attacked and the decision to increase that stat will be made again. At level 2, her CRIT RES is also increased by up to 50% for 3 turns at the start of the battle or when she's attacked and she has a remaining HP percentage of 70% and above (50% after upgrades).

Upon gifting Rusalka a copy of her Unique Weapon "Cendrillon", her SPD increases by 30% for 1 turn and ''Kikimora's Downpour"'s magical attack becomes equal to 580% of her ATK and increases its [Decreased Damage Dealing] to 2.

  • Arc Villain: She's the Witch of Qlipha the Successor must rescue from her own curse in the Kingdom of Chekkos.
  • Big Brother Attraction: Before he pushed her into the lake where she lay for a century. It's unknown if his last words to her were really his own or if he said that under the influence of the Witch Hunts.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: Boss Battle in the last stage of the Kingdom of Chekkos aside, Rusalka first appeared in a Japanese advertisement for the game, 4 months before she became playable. She also featured on the 1st half-Anniversary's home screen before her playable debut.
  • Fairytale Motifs: Rusalka's story parallels that of Urashima-Taro, in which she ends up at the bottom of a watery body for sometime and when she eventually returns to land, 100 years had passed.
  • Ill Girl: She was this for much of her life prior to unleashing her Curse.
  • Making a Splash: Her power, which was what flooded the Kingdom of Chekkos.
  • Meaningful Name: She's named after a water dwelling entity in Slavic folklore.
  • One Degree of Separation: The official art book reveals that Rusalka's brother would eventually start a family that includes Veela in the family tree, making Rusalka Veela's grandaunt, and explains why the two have similar powers.
  • Parasol of Prettiness: Rusalka carries one in her 2D art; presumably to prevent herself from getting wet from her own powers. However, it's not a Parasol of Pain; her actual Unique Weapon is her book.
  • Promoted to Playable: She was made playable on 28 April 2023.
  • Really 700 Years Old: Rusalka, as a result of being tossed into a lake and slumbering there for about a century, is 100 years older than she's supposed to be.
  • Sampling: Rusalka's Lament is heavily inspired by Scarborough Fair, more specifically the version made most famous by Simon & Garfunkel.
  • Second Love: The Successor becomes this for her after he releases her from her own Curse.
  • Summon Magic: According to her active skill descriptions, Rusalka summons a kikimora and a vodnik/vodyanoy to assist her water spells.
  • Tsundere: She shows shades of this to the Successor.
  • Uniformity Exception: Rusalka is so far the only Radiance-Aura Witch to not be a Warrior type; being a Sorcerer instead.
  • Water Is Womanly: One of the more feminine Witches who also has water powers.

    Armstrong

II: The Witch of Lost Souls

Aura: Chaos
Rarity: SR -> LR
Type: Sniper
Height and Weight: 171cm / 61kg
Blood Type: A
Birthday: 7/14
Lament: II. THE SOUL (JP by Yuu Kobayashi; EN)
Voiced by: Yuu Kobayashi (JP); Michelle Blenker (EN)

The former Captain of the Kingdom of Galia's Witch Corps who ended up losing her entire unit to her own government's schemes. Furious over this betrayal, she becomes the 2nd Witch of Qlipha, the Witch of Lost Souls, and has taken over Galia's capital with the life-stealing specters who resemble former members of the Witch Corps if one risks their life to take a closer look.

Commanding her army of specters that was once her comrades in the Witch Corps, Armstrong boasts high ATK and chances to land Critical Hit after Critical Hit. Her 1st active "Blitzkrieg Operation" has her send her ghostly army towards the enemy, dealing 1 physical attack equal to up to 600% of her ATK to the 2 enemies with the highest ATK and post-upgrade reactivates if said targets survive the attack. Her 2nd active "Volley Fire" has the specters initiate volley fire that deals up to 8 physical attacks equal to 250% of her ATK to random enemies, with the damage from said attack being multiplied by up to 2 if a target has remaining HP of 50% or higher and starting from level 2 is guaranteed to hit.

According to Armstrong, "If you want peace, prepare for war". Based on this saying, her 1st passive "Parabellum" increases her critical hit damage by 20% and post-upgrade at the start of the turn increases the chance of landing a critical hit of herself and the ally with the highest SPD by up to 40% for 2 turns once every 4 turns. And with the masterful tactics that are the signature of the North's strongest military unit, Armstrong's 2nd passive "Elastic Defense" cuts attacks that Armstrong takes by up to 50% and for every attack she deals that's a critical hit, the potency of damage cutting decreases by 2% (which will not go further than 10%) and starting from level 2 also increases her ATK by 2% each time (up to 20%).

Upon being reissued with her Unique Weapon "M1805 Magic Blitzer", "Blitzkrieg Operation"'s targets is increased to 3, "Elastic Defense" further cuts the damage from enemy attacks to 60% and the potency of damage cutting will not go lower than 40% with her ATK increase raised to 4% and "Volley Fire"'s physical damage is increased to 300% of Armstrong's ATK.

  • Amazon Brigade: The Witch Corps she used to lead.
  • Arc Villain: She's the reason why the Kingdom of Galia's overrun with the souls of the fallen and it's up to the Successor to end it.
  • Authority Sounds Deep: A (former) army commander with a deep voice.
  • Blind Without 'Em: She needs glasses to aim due to anti-riot gas affecting her eyes during the war.
  • Boléro Effect: Since her Lament is based on the Trope Namer, this is bound to happen; with the song's 1st verse starting out soft then ending on a crescendo at the climax before quieting down at the last line of lyrics.
  • Final-Exam Boss: Her boss battle at the end of the Kingdom of Galia includes Lunalynn, Ophelia, Valeriede and A.A, meaning you're up against the entire Aura of Chaos roster.
  • Mercy Kill: What she had to do to the rest of the Witch Corps after a trap they triggered brought them to the brink of death.
  • Promoted to Playable: She's become playable as of 31 August 2023.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: Upon realizing that the Kingdom of Galia's government set her and her Witch Corps up for certain doom, she uses her newfound power as a Witch of Qlipha to summon her troops from the dead as spirits and overrun the capital she once protected.
  • Sampling: Armstrong's Lament is sung to the tune of Maurice Ravel's Bólero.
  • Soul Power: She's known as the "Witch of Lost Souls", has the ability to command the souls of her fallen comrades and her Curse of Specters is the curse that ravages the Kingdom of Galia.
  • Taking the Bullet: Her second-in-command, who pushed her out of the way, and allowed her to survive the trap unscathed.
  • Tragic Keepsake: The dog tags Armstrong wears on her neck all belong to her former comrades in the Witch Corps.
  • Uniformity Exception: There are 6 Warriors and 3 Sorcerers among the 10 Witches of Qlipha. Armstrong is the only Sniper type.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: The Northern government the Witch Corps served decided to get rid of them with a trap near the end of the war they were winning. Unfortunately for them, they didn't expect a survivor.

    Elfriede (Unmarked Spoilers)

Ⅰ: The Witch of Longinus

Aura: Radiance
Rarity: SR -> LR
Type: Warrior
Height and Weight: 158cm / 55kg
Blood Type: O
Birthday: 12/25
Lament: I. THE LANCE (JP by Yukari Tamura; EN)
Voiced by: Yukari Tamura (JP);

The Pope of the Church of Longinus and the first ever Witch of Qlipha, the Witch of Longinus. As the kindhearted Pope, her task was to seal away the demons who seek to destroy the world. However, everything went wrong when one demon had the bright idea of taking advantage of Elfriede's insecurities and weaknesses to take control of her body, then bring about the end of the world while also setting off the Curse of Longinus by cloaking the Adrian Empire in light. Oh, and she's also responsible for the creation of the other 9 Witches of Qlipha fought during the events of the game.

The combination of the light of the Pope and the darkness of the demon that possessed her gives Elfriede the power to protect the world and atone for her mistakes. Her 1st active "Angelic Decimation" has Elfriede use the Pope's power of light from the angels to annihilate evil and bring salvation and peace to humanity by increasing her chance to hit by 50% for 2 turns and deals 1 physical attack equal to up to 800% of her ATK to 3 random enemies, which increases by up to 50% of her ATK for each buff that all allies are enhanced with for a maximum of a whopping 1200% of her ATK. On the other hand, Elfriede's 2nd active "Demonic Judgement" has her cast a light that passes on judgement on sins from her once-white wings tainted black with impurity by dealing 1 physical attack equal to up to 1400% of her ATK to up to 3 random enemies, which increases by up to 400% of her ATK for each debuff inflicted on the opposing team for a maximum of 1600% of her ATK.

Elfriede's new determination to protect the world and its people from destruction despite the mess she caused takes on the form of her 1st passive "The Pope's Blessing" which grants her a buff that increases all of her DEF (DEF, PDEF and MDEF) by up to 10% 2 times (4 times from lvl 2 onwards; maximum of 10 times), with the stack count increasing by up to 4 and if she's attacked and takes damage that exceeds 10% of her max. HP, the damage is cut by 40% which activates once per turn. Meanwhile, the demon that took over Elfriede's body has imbued her magic words with new power that manifests in her 2nd passive "Prayer for Salvation", which increases the chance to inflict a debuff of everyone in the party aside from Elfriede herself by up to 30% for up to 4 turns which activates once every 4 turns at the start of the turn.

Once Elfriede takes up her Unique Weapon "Lance of Longinus" again, "Angelic Decimation"'s range increases to 5 random enemies, "The Pope's Blessing" increases the damage cut to 90% and "Demonic Judgement"'s physical damage is increased to 1600% of her ATK (a staggering 2400% of her ATK max).

Elfriede serves as the focal character of the MementoMori's 1st Anniversary, alongside Illya's [The Witch of God's Curse] variant.

  • Arc Villain: Elfriede's the final obstacle in saving the Adrian Empire and the continent of Adria as a whole from destruction by demons.
  • The Atoner: Elfriede is absolutely horrified that the world got extremely screwed up because of her, but after being convinced to live by the Successor she decides to devote whatever of her life's left to save as many as she can... before ending her life in the most horrific way imaginable.
  • Barefoot Sage: Doesn't wear any save for some white strips around her feet, and doesn't take away the mature air she has as the Pope.
  • Barrier Maiden:
    • All Popes had the duty to seal away the demons at an altar on the northern part of the continent; she hadn't been able to manifest this power until she met a boy who saw her as an older sister, causing a Heel Realization that she should be protecting the people living in the world. But all that came to naught when she failed to seal the demons.
    • Her Active Skill, "Pope's Blessing", buffs her own DEF, P. DEF, and M. DEF twice at the start of battle.
  • Black Mage: Ironically for someone who looks like a White Mage that wished to protect the world, her Active Skills "Angelic Decimation" and "Demonic Judgement" purely deal damage; "The Pope's Blessing" passive buffs only her own defense and no one else; and the other passive that does affect allies, "Prayer for Salvation", increases their chance to inflict debuffs. Her skills being offensive and selfish in effect are likely a result of the demon's influence.
  • Break the Cutie: Dear lord. After one of the demons escaped and possessed her body, it proceeded to attempt to break her by using her body to kill the ones she loved. Despite Elfriede's attempts to fight back, what truly hurled her over the Despair Event Horizon and let the demon win was it killing the little boy who viewed her as a sister figure.
  • Call-Back: Elfriede's Lament has many references to the other 9 Witches of Qlipha, both in music and lyrics:
These withered flowers freeze like ice
they seek the warmth of burning flames.
Even this mighty sword is tarnished with rust
twisted radiance, now it's lost here.

When thunderous cries call out in pain
    Just begging for the rain
Forgotten voices sing soft, delicate pleas
As they're piercing into the soul.
  • The Corruption: The demon possessing her left its mark on her soul, tainting her powers and giving her a limited lifespan. She's still determined to die doing good even with all that.
  • Create Your Own Hero: With all the power she had to keep the demon possessing her at bay, she tasked Illya to find the Successor to the Staff of Tikkun, in the hopes that whoever wields the staff would save the world.
  • Create Your Own Villain: She's behind the creation of most of the other 9 Witches of Qlipha, with her personally having a hand in the rise of Armstrong, Ophelia, Fortina, A.A and Lunalynn.
  • Cursed with Awesome: Her Passive Skill, Prayer for Salvation, shows her powers have been tainted by the demon. This nevertheless manifests in combat gameplay as an increase of her allies' chance to inflict debuffs.
  • Cuteness Proximity: Her 3rd homescreen line has her fawn over the cuteness of cat ears (and to an extent dog and fox ears), then feels flustered as she asks if anyone would get mad if she petted their earsnote. Later on she's caught putting on a pair of cat ears and meowing like one.
  • Death Seeker: It's clear that her heart has been shattered by the demon, not hesitating to ask the Successor to take her down along with the demon. After she was saved from her curse instead, she's convinced that she can no longer call herself the "Pope of the Church of Longinus" since she did a lot of horrible things and let a demon possess her. Her final memory and some of her lines have her wish for a revolting death worthy of someone who nearly ended the world.
Elfriede (7th Memory): Then, my reward shall be a death so revolting that everyone will turn their eyes away from me. That…is the only thing this foolish sinner is allowed to have.
  • Demonic Possession: Whatever horrible things Elfriede did wasn't on her own will; it was that of the demon who possessed her when she was at the seal that kept its kind away.
  • Despair Event Horizon: Crossed it when the demon possessing her killed all her loved ones, especially a boy who looked up to her, crushing any will she could have mustered to take back her body.
  • Didn't See That Coming: Elfriede really thought that once she herself has been stopped and her Curse purified, the world would be saved. Unfortunately, Illya's true power coming into effect, absorbing the 10 Curses and being possessed by the demon lord, turning her into Witch of Qlipha no. 0 was not part of her agenda.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: If you somehow manage to clear every single Main Quest chapter available, she's the one who appears along with the message to wait for future updates — a feat first achieved just over three months before her actual implementation.
  • Final-Exam Boss: Like Armstrong before her, her boss fight consists of the entire Aura of Radiance witch lineup.
  • Gold and White Are Divine: This head of a (seemingly) Saintly Church worshipping God and their heavenly angels is appropriately dressed in white robes with gold and blue accents... though Elfriede would disagree she's holy anymore.
  • Hidden Agenda Villain: At first, it's never made clear what she's planning whenever she makes an appearance in the Witches' various stories. For one, she's the head of the Church of Longinus that is constantly conducting witch hunts, despite being a Witch herself and not raising a hand against it, and if she had any morality, it wasn't there when she mind-controlled Florence into cutting down her own best friend, Fortina. That's not even getting into being responsible for creating some of the Witches of Qlipha in similar ways. And yet, Illya had nothing but nice things to say about her; the Pope encouraged the girl when she was in despair and charged Illya with finding the Successor and giving him the Staff of Tikkun, potentially making him and the Witches become the ultimate downfall of the Church. Moreover, Loki's Memories show that when Elfriede was just a chief minister, Loki saw her as a good-willed person who sought the fortune-teller out to help the Church's followers pursue better lives, but after her ascendance to Pope, her harshness and command to hunt Witches made her like a different person. Then came her release as a playable Witch, and it turns out she was never the villain...
  • Holy Hand Grenade: Her main power as the Pope of the Church of Longinus is this.
  • Light Is Good: Her powers are usually holy-based and she is indeed a Nice Girl and a Wide-Eyed Idealist... except when she's under Demonic Possession.
  • Lonely at the Top: As much as the people around her hadn't been bad at heart, they were strict with her as a candidate to be Pope. It was only when she met a boy she saw as a younger brother that she could be at ease around.
  • Ms. Exposition: According to Mertillier's Memories, the Pope explained everything there is to know about the Tree of Life, the archangels, and everything needed to summon the archangel Haniel into A.A.'s body. This knowledge cements her as someone who knows big secrets behind the setting, although given The Reveal that she was possessed by a demon, it's likely that it was actually the demon's own knowledge all along to summon the Witches of Qlipha.
  • Not So Above It All: In her SSR line, the Successor can catch her attempting to be cat-like with cat ears and meowing. Once she notices him, she gets very embarrassed.
  • The Pope: Her title as head of the Church of Longinus.
  • Promoted to Playable: Elfriede's finally playable on October 18, 2023 as part of MementoMori's 1st Anniversary.
  • Sampling: In an interesting case, she's the only Witch of Qlipha to not derive her Lament from an existing piece of music; rather, her song takes cues from the Laments of the other Witches of Qlipha, most likely because she was the one who created them.
  • Significant Birth Date: Befitting the witch in the highest position in the Church, Elfriede's birthday is on Christmas Day.
  • Taking You with Me: Prior to being fought by our heroes, she resolved herself to incapacitate the demon for a moment and give an opening to be killed. But the Successor had her spared instead, wanting the Pope to restore order to the world.
  • Tarot Motifs: In Loki's Memories, she attributes the fates of The World and The Wheel of Fortune to her. Upright, the World means fulfillment and harmony, while the Wheel represents good luck, destiny, and an incoming critical turning point in life. But when reversed, the World shows incompletion and emptiness, while the Wheel becomes a sign of bad luck and unexpected change, especially when it's forced onto them. In her backstory, the Pope was a Nice Girl who wanted the best for everyone just as Loki and Illya knew her as, but the reveal of her special MV all but states that she's a victim of Demonic Possession.
  • True Blue Femininity: Part of her hat and clothes have dark blue colors, in line with how a Pope of an entire church meant to spread goodness should have acted.
  • Underestimating Badassery: Despite knowing that even a single demon could threaten the entire world, she decides to follow a suggestion from "the voice of God" to slay the demons and end the threat permanently. She didn't even get to fight and let a demon possess her instead, a decision she regretted ever since.
  • Walking Spoiler: Good luck to anyone attempting to discuss what little story the game has without mentioning her.
  • Yin-Yang Bomb: Both of Elfriede's active skills combine holy light and demonic darkness.

Witches Ⅺ and above

    Paladea

Ⅺ: The Witch of Justice ♈️

Aura: Chaos
Rarity: SR -> LR
Type: Sniper
Height and Weight: 174cm / 57kg
Blood Type: A
Birthday: 5/21
Lament: Ⅺ: THE JUSTICE (JP by Aya Uchida; EN)
Voiced by: Aya Uchida (JP)

The Supreme Commander of Emeria's Armed Forces of Humanity and Fenny's idol, who also goes by the title of [The Witch of Justice]. Though grandiose in status, in person, she is a simple girl who would rather spend time drawing pictures over wielding guns. However, a fateful decision led to her bathing Emeria in black flames with her Curse of Justice.
  • Arc Villain: The resident Witch of Qlipha for the continent of Emeria.
  • Broken Pedestal: On the giving end towards Fenny; she was Fenny's idol but ended up shattering her admiration when she destroyed the world. Eventually once Fenny discovers her true sense of justice, it becomes a Rebuilt Pedestal.
  • Call-Back: The melody of the first pre-chorus in Paladea's Lament is the same tune as Fenny's, as their stories run parallel with each other.
  • Epic Rocking: Clocking in at 6:08 (including 40s of soft deep bass), Paladea has the longest Lament to date.
  • Hidden Depths: The Supreme Commander who slew numerous demons once had an amateur hobby of making picture books for children, and still tries to draw for other people today.
  • Irony: Paladea's astrological symbol is Aries, yet she herself is not an Aries - her actual horoscope is Gemini. However, Aries is associated with fire so it does fit somewhat with her powers.
  • Playing with Fire: According to Fenny's Character Memories before she became playable, Paladea has the ability to control fire. She usually uses white flames but when she started destroying the world, her flames turned black instead. These manifest in gameplay as the Active Skill, Black Flames of Justice.
  • Power at a Price: Her 7th voice line reveals that as a result of her massive power, she can't move her body as much. As a result, she has limited animation compared to the others.
  • Reluctant Warrior: Though idolized as the greatest warrior of the Armed Forces, she is not at all enthused with having to fight and would rather live peacefully.
  • Sampling: Part of Paladea's Lament has a slowed-down section of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Eine Kline Nachtmusik.
  • Sadistic Choice: The demon that granted Paladea her power forced her to either destroy humanity to save the world or destroy the world to save humanity. After massive amounts of pressure, Paladea chooses the former, even though she knew that both would lead to the destruction of both either way. She herself ends up horrified after she sees the consequences of her choice.
  • Terrible Artist: She enjoys drawing picture books for children, but her drawings leave much to be desired. One of her voice lines has her take advice from someone implied to be Cherna to learn how to draw properly.
  • Zodiac Motifs: As a Witch of Qlipha, her left eye has the astrological symbol for Aries.

Variants

    Illya (Another ver.)

0: The Witch of God's Curse

Aura: Chaos
Rarity: SR -> LR
Type: Warrior
Height and Weight: 155cm / 47kg
Blood Type: A
Birthday: 7/20
Lament: Allure of the Dark (JP by Daoko; EN)
Voiced by: Kana Hanazawa (JP); Erika Harlacher (EN)

The Curses of the Witches of Qlipha have been purified. Elfriede has been freed from Demonic Possession. The world has been saved. So why is there something amiss? As it turns out, the Successor's journey isn't over yet, as all ten Curses have converged into Illya, and with the prescence of an angel and the demon lord now inside her, Illya has become something even the Pope did not expect: The Witch of God's Curse. The 11th Witch of Qlipha. Designation: 0. But will Illya use this newfound power to save the world? Or will she destroy it instead all because of the one person she's come to love?
For more information on her normal self, see her tab here.
  • Always Save The Boy: A rare gender-swap example of the usual. As a departure from her wish to Save the World, this version of Illya has her selfish desires to stay with the Successor amplified and only wants to save him while saving the world in the process.
  • Beyond the Impossible: It's been established that there are ten Curses from the Witches of Qlipha that threaten the world. Once Illya absorbs them and unleashes her true power, an eleventh Curse is born from the combination of an angel and the demon lord residing in her, which is something Elfriede didn't see coming.
  • Breaking Old Trends: She is the first Witch to not only have a variant with an Aura type normally reserved for the Witches of Qlipha, but also make a base rarity jump; in her case, from R to SR.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Illya's gotten quite jealous at the fact that the Successor has been getting along with the other Witches at his estate... and she's well aware of it in her UR home line.
  • Critical Hesitation Blunder: The reason why Illya became The Witch of God's Curse is due to this. After realizing that the first curse from the country of Fran wasn't dispelled, but rather converged inside her body; she knew that she would have to sacrifice her life in order to invoke God's Miracle that she can use only one time to save the world. So she has mentally prepared herself to go through with Heroic Sacrifice... but having a good time with other witches and the Successor caused her to hesitate. This results in the demon lord still sealed in Illya's body for now, but the Demon Lord will eventually be freed to cause The End of the World as We Know It unless she goes deep into the underworld to reach the demon's throne to once again seal the demon lord.
  • Good Angel, Bad Angel: This is happening literally, as there is an angel and the demon lord inside her, and figuratively, as an angel inside her tells her to save the world while the demon lord inside her tempts her by saying that the Successor values her life more than he values the world. It is shown in Illya's 7th memory that she is slowly falling for the Devil's Temptation.
  • Foil: To Elfriede, especially compared to this variant of Illya:
    • In appearance, Elfriede has pure white hair and primarily white and bright clothes in contrast to Illya's black and darker palette, made all the more black as a Witch of Qlipha. This is also reflected in their elements being Radiance and Chaos respectively.
    • Both were born into considerably high positions of power, though Elfriede was to be a Pope candidate and Illya the daughter of a noble family. Their eventual fates however are similar in that they lose their positions.
    • They are both Witches of Qlipha, although Elfriede became the very first one while Illya became one to everyone's surprise and came last.
    • Elfriede's resolution as the Pope at first was to 'save the world' by saving the people living in it, and more or less resolves to continue this as The Atoner. Illya similarly aspired to save the world, but upon becoming a Witch of Qlipha, now puts the Successor first over the world and is only saving the world in the process.
    • They are subjects of Demonic Possession but Elfriede was helplessly made to do a demon's bidding until she was freed of it, while Illya is currently Sharing a Body with an archangel and a demon lord.
  • Gameplay and Story Integration: To counter Elfriede, who is a Aura of Radiance Witch, Illya went from her usual Aura of Azure to Aura of Chaos.
  • Genki Girl: She's much more chipper compared to her previously reserved self.
  • It Only Works Once: The reason why Illya was called "the Child of Miracles" is because she was born with power of the God capable of performing his miracle only once.
  • Pimped-Out Dress: She gets quite the alluring black dress as she gets her new power.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Her pupils turn red whenever she tries to tempt the Successor into doing something else or when using her powers, it being an indicator of the demon lord within her.
  • Sealed Evil in a Can: Illya is the can, becoming a host to the demon lord after the 10 Curses plaguing the world have converged inside her and she used her miracle to survive instead of bringing peace to the world. The only way to get it our for good is to enter the underworld and reach the throne.
  • Super Mode: Technically, Illya's [Witch of God's Curse] form is this. Though with so much on the line, it's hard to tell if it really benefits her.
  • Tempting Apple: She holds a bright red one in her character art. Fitting in that the demon lord inside her is tempting her into letting her desires go rampant.
  • Title Drop: Nearly there. Illya's first homescreen line has her mention something about a word that means "everyone has to die eventually", but can't remember what it is. "Memento mori" means "remember that you must die" in Latin.
  • Uniformity Exception: She is the only character in this category whose Lament is not only not derived from an existing piece of music (Elfriede's contains traces of the other 9) but also the only one that's not a "Do It Yourself" Theme Tune in Japanese, with Daoko returning to sing "Allure in the Dark" instead of Kana Hanazawa. Additionally, she's the only Witch of Qlipha who did not gain her powers via crossing the Despair Event Horizon, but from having the Curses gathered into her.
  • Weight Woe: Her SSR line has her lament that she gained weight again after her adventure at the Great Pit, which is actually reflected in her profile as she had gained 4 kg over the course of the year. Some things never change.
  • Wham Shot: The end of her Character Memory story shows her full face... and when she opens her eyes, Illya reveals herself as the 11th Witch of Qlipha with her left eye sporting the number 0.
