    The Successor
A Duke from the Duchy of Fran who's slated to be the Successor of the Staff of Tikkun and one of the very few people in the world sympathetic to the Witches' plight. After wielding the Staff, he journeys with Illya and other Witches to save the world from the calamity and the Witches from their own curses and the Church of Longinus.
  • All-Loving Hero: Him being one is what allowed him to wield the Staff of Tikkun in the first place. This is because only those who trust and love humanity from the bottoms of their hearts can handle its power.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: All the Witches gravitate towards him simply because he's one of the very few people sympathetic towards them and willing to help them save the world despite being Witches.
  • Call to Adventure: He got this when a Witch named Illya brought him the Staff of Tikkun to be its Successor in order to save the world. Naturally, he Jumped at the Call.
  • Chick Magnet: Naturally because he's a Nice Guy, majority of the witches he rescues end up having a crush on him... although he never seems to realize it and only thanks them for working so hard or simply being with him. Or does he?
  • The Chosen One: To become the Successor of the Staff of Tikkun.
  • Determinator: Whether it is to save people from terrifying monsters, cure the world from the deadly Curse, or defend Witches from unjust Witch Hunts; the Duke will determinedly fight for the sake of the world and its people including Witches.
  • Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": In character descriptions, the Successor is always referred to as a Duke. Majority of the characters call him "My Lord, "Master", or otherwise, just never by his name.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Nice Guy incarnate and All-Loving Hero he may be, but some of the Witches' homescreen lines have him a bit disturbed by their behaviour, notably Amour's Yandere tendencies.
  • Friend-or-Idol Decision: Due to how Illya has become the Witch of God's Curse, the Successor now has to choose between saving the world or saving Illya. This is significant because outside of his established character traits shown in Heroic Mime, he has never been in Moral Dilemma where he has to sacrifice one to save another until now. So it remains to see what choice he will make in the end...
  • Heroic Mime: Although the Successor serves as a Player Character, players do not have dialogue options with his witches. The game, however, implies that the Successor does indeed talk to other characters given how they respond. So through those characters' responses, it is certain that the Successor has established personality traits like All-Loving Hero, Determinator, Nice Guy, Royals Who Actually Do Something, and Workaholic.
  • In-Series Nickname: Some Witches have their own names for the Successor. So far, they are: "My Lord" (Shizu, Charlotte, Soteira, Libra, Petra, Theodora, Arianrhod, Iris, Lunalynn, Natasha, Primavera, Hathor, Rean, Freesia, Moddey, Lea, Sophia, Mertillier, Sivi, Artie, Summer Moddey), "Master" (Monica, Rosalie, Cerberus, Tropon, Mimi, Nina, Dian, Sonya, Fenrir, Chiffon), "Your Grace" (Loki, Fortina, Olivia, Amleth, Ophelia, Liselotte), "Mister" (Ivy, Soltina, Veela), "Sir" (Sabrina, Florence, Summer Sabrina), "Duke" (Elfriede, Matilda), "Boss" (Stella), "Daddy" (Winter Tropon), "Dear Brother" (Priscilla), "Mister Apprentice" (Merlyn), "My Favorite Customer" (Richesse), "My Liege" (Luke), "My Prince" (Amour, Winter Amour), "Senpai" (Carol), "Sir" (Fenny), "Ya" (Belle), "Your Excellency" (Zara).
  • Never Gets Fat: According to Illya's 7th home voice line, the Successor's weight stayed the same despite both eating the same food much to her dismay.
  • Nice Guy: Despite the ongoing Witch Hunt, he still saved the Witches and never turned them in to the Church. This causes them to swear their loyalty to him because he's just that kind.
  • No Name Given: The Successor doesn't have a canon name (so far).
  • Player Character: For the game; being the main driving force for the Witches' journey to save the world and all.
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: One of the few people in power who took action towards the ongoing calamity and possibly the sole noble who sympathizes with the Witches.
  • Save the Villain: It's a stretch to call the Witches of Qlipha villains given that their awakening and the Curses they unleashed are accidents at most as a result of the harsh world, though it doesn't take from the fact that it's noble to still want to save them in spite of it all. Elfriede's case is most significant given that she's the root cause of both the Witch Hunts and the Curses, even with her Demonic Possession, but still the Successor wanted her to live, if only to have her make amends for her actions.
  • Support Party Member: His powers granted by the Staff of Tikkun lets him cleanse the Witches of Qlipha's magical influence, create a kind of empathic link with people and share/combine the powers of his allies amongst other things, but nothing that would apply directly in combat, which he lets the witches under his command do.
  • Undying Loyalty: All the Witches he saved dedicate their loyalty to him for being so kind to them.
  • Ungrateful Townsfolk: It is shown in Stella's 7th Memory that this is what the Duke and other witches with him face as townsfolk falsely blame their Witch saviors for spreading calamity and thus driving them out of town.
  • Workaholic: Every single Witch (except Mimi) has a line commenting that he's either working too hard, or tired from working too hard.
  • You Remind Me of X: Rosalie often makes comparisons between him and his predecessor, while Liselotte's primary reason for trusting him despite being from another world is because he reminds her of her own Lord.

    The Church of Longinus
The powerful Church that contributes to the backstories of the playable cast. Some time before the events of the game, for some reason or another they decided to hold a Witch Hunt despite an ongoing crisis that normal humans couldn't handle, believing that Witches were responsible for the calamity in the first place. This has some... unfortunate consequences.
  • Burn the Witch!: What they believe to be the best solution to resolving the calamity. It only made things worse than it already is.
  • Corrupt Church: Despite the calamity currently ravaging the world, they decided that of all things witches were to blame, so they started a Witch Hunt to kill all of the witches. And even before that happened some of them were responsible for the miserable lives of a fair number of the witches.
  • Create Your Own Villain: Their Witch Hunt in particular caused the Witches of Qlipha to awaken and unleash their curses due to the high amounts of emotional distress being brought upon them. So now not only does the world have to deal with the calamity but also the curses brought upon by the Witches of Qlipha. Thanks a bunch.
  • Saintly Church: What they used to be before Elfriede accidentally let a demon loose. However, it's implied that some people in there were rotten to begin with.

    The Demons
The true Big Bads of the game, responsible for the calamities plaguing the world. Many years ago they tried to destroy the world, only to be thwarted by the previous Successor and sealed away. It's the job of the Pope of the Church of Longinus to maintain the seal locking them away, but one of them managed to get out, resulting in the state of the world in the present.
  • Demon Lords and Archdevils: But of course there's a leader of the demons. It tried to destroy the world once but was sealed away by the angels. Currently, Illya serves as its host.
  • Demonic Possession: One of them managed to possess Elfriede before the events of the game, then used her body to kill her loved ones in an attempt to break her. Once she became the first Witch of Qlipha, it proceeded to start the Witch Hunts, drive nine other girls into despair-induced insanity and spread the Ten Curses throughout the continent. Later on, the demon lord itself inhabited Illya's body when she absorbed the Curses into herself.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: The true villains, who engineered the events of the game and then some.
  • Omnicidal Maniac: Their background and motives for wanting to destroy the world then and now have yet to be elaborated on, but what is clear is that they want the world and its people destroyed, the suffering of said people along the way nothing consequential.
  • One-Man Army: If even one managed to break free, the world would fall into calamity. Elfriede learnt that the hard way.
  • Sealed Evil in a Can: All the demons were sealed in the Great Pit and one of the Pope's duties is to maintain it. Additionally, Illya's the current Can holding the demon lord and preventing it from undoing everything she and the Successor put effort into. The only way to get it out permanently is for them to venture into the underworld and reach its throne or kill whatever remains of Illya.

Witches

    In General
  • Aerith and Bob: In this fantasy setting, there are girls with simple names such as Sabrina, Olivia and Rosalie, and then there are girls with quite fancy names (Arianrhod and Mertillier being the worst offenders).
  • Badass Adorable: They're all cute girls with immense powers to save or destroy the world.
  • Blessed with Suck: When some of the witches first gained their powers, they understandably freaked out and questioned why they had to become a witch since becoming one would inevitably attract the negative attention of the Church of Longinus. However...
  • Cursed with Awesome: Some of the other witches view them gaining powers as a good thing, since it allows them to protect what's dear to them even if everyone else would now despise them for being a witch. Eventually, those who view their new status as witches a bad thing eventually came to terms with their new witchdom, especially after the Successor saved them and rehomed them in his mansion.
  • Emotional Powers: Each Witch has a unique set of powers granted to them when they awaken based on their emotions. According to Mertillier in her Character Memories, there are girls who have powers based on positive emotions, and those whose powers are based on negative ones (Iris and Rean, for example). And then there are the Witches of Qlipha, whose powers are derived from the despair they feel when they lose their most precious 'treasure' in their lives (such as a loved one).
    • Moddey's Summer variant goes a bit further into detail: because a witch's powers are influenced by their emotions, being overwhelmed with negative ones will cause them to go out of control (case in point: the Witches of Qlipha). Subsequently, certain emotions will bring change to their powers and aura, hence Sabrina and Moddey herself having different Aura types for their Summer variants compared to their usual selves.
  • Family Theme Naming: Anytime siblings are involved, expect them to have a theme going on. Among the cast that have designs/are playable, we have Soltina and Lunalynn with Stellar Theme Naming and Fenrir and Cerberus whose names are derived from canines in mythology.
  • Image Song: All of them have their own character song known as a Lament.
  • Little Bit Beastly: Some of them have animal ears/horns and a tail. This is more prominent with Witches hailing from the Lupus Confederacy.
  • Our Witches Are Different: The term here is used to refer to young girls with magical powers. However, not even they themselves know how witches came to be - it just happens.
  • Pint-Sized Powerhouse: Namely witches who were very young during the events of the game such as Soltina, Veela and Sonya. This goes double especially for Natasha and Cerberus, who became Witches of Qlipha.
  • Ragtag Bunch of Misfits: All of them were spurned by society, but that doesn't stop them from coming together to save the world.
  • Rescue Romance: Some of the witches end up falling in love with the Successor after he saves them, with their Character Memories and/or homescreen lines ranging from trying to get his attention to lamenting that they have to compete with so many others.
  • Sweet Tooth: Of varying degrees. Majority of them are young girls, after all.
  • Vague Age: The Witches' ages are not mentioned in their profiles, though their birthdays are.

  • Aura of Azure List
  • Aura of Crimson List
  • Aura of Emerald List
  • Aura of Amber List
  • Witches of Qlipha (Aura of Radiance/Chaos) List

Unplayable Characters

    Lou
Veela's best friend. She was the only one to stick by Veela... until one fateful day.
  • Ambiguous Situation: Whatever happened of Lou after Veela was taken to the Successor's estate is unknown, since Veela's Character Memory story ends with Veela going to the door after receiving a letter. Unless Lou becomes a playable character later, the players will not know if Lou actually became a witch later down the line.
  • Only Friend: To Veela.

    Morgana's Party
A party of heroes that Morgana the fairy was a part of, formed by the angel Samyaza on a journey to fell the demon lord of the underworld. Amongst other witches, notable characters include the Hero of the Staff, the Hero of the Spear, Artoria the fighter, and Elaine the nun. After a certain betrayal however, they were all separated upon their latest transference to other worlds.
