Main Characters

    Samara "Sam" Young

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sam_young.png

The Main Female Character of the series, Samara "Sam" Young is a young nerdy woman who dreams of becoming an indie-game developer. She was in and out of hospitals growing up due to several health issues which has caused her family to coddle and protect her. Despite her social anxiety she has developed a loving circle of friends. Sam grows in her confidence both in herself and her own skills as the series goes on, helped along by her friends, her Boss, and even Marshall himself as they slowly get to know each other.

  • All-Loving Hero: Sam is normally quite caring and loving to most people which is what draws people to her. She even begins to finally warm up to Marshall as the series goes on.
  • Bespectacled Cutie: Sam wears glasses and is constantly drawn with big, soulful eyes from downward angles to emphasise her vulnerability.
  • Broken Pedestal: Sam was one of Marshall's longtime fans until she watched his Ruminate video, in which he didn't take any of the time nor effort to play it seriously at all, preferring to blast through the game and inevitably giving it a bad review. She even dedicated the game to him, which he discovers after his second playthrough. The pedestal is rebuilt after Marshall replays Ruminate and goes through correctly discovering everything he missed on his first playthrough, and tells Sam how much he loved the game.
  • Can't Hold His Liquor: It's not clear how much Irish Coffee Sam has when she innocently orders it at the restaurant, but in the short time that Charles took his phone call she was able to get hilariously drunk.
  • D-Cup Distress: Sam avoids tight-fitting clothes because of this.
  • Deconstructed Character Archetype: Specifically of the The Ingenue. Anyone who spends any significant time with her quickly notices that she’s unfailingly nice and a genuinely good person, and as noted below, she’s so virginal that she’s never even kissed a boy before. The deconstruction comes in when her backstory as the ill girl is brought to light, the experience of which instilled in her an almost instinctive sense of empathy for other people, but at the cost of herself and her self-esteem. Her lack of romantic experience stems not from any sense of Christian-esque purity, but from a sheltered life created by her family and friends who feel compelled to protect her from everything. All of this has left her with anxiety disorders, low self-esteem, and very little real-world experience.
  • Dude Magnet: Sam attracts/gains the attention of Link, Charles, and Marshall much to her disbelief and confusion.
  • Feminine Women Can Cook: She can apparently cook a bowl of soup so good, it can momentarily stupefy Link and Marshall into unintelligible grunting for more. She is also the only one in her entire office that can make quality coffee.
  • Gosh Dang It to Heck!: She's probably the only person in the entire comic that hasn't used strong language. Preferring to use the substitute phrases (though that may change as time goes on).
  • Grew a Spine: Standing up for her coworker Lucy, taking the Indigineer account suspension into her own hands, and working through her fear of confrontation in general are all major components to Sam's Character Development.
  • Lovable Nerd: She has glasses, nerdy interests, and adorable awkwardness in social situations. Her attractiveness is often less her looks and more her gentle and caring heart, when she isn't giving Marshall the cold shoulder because of what happened to Ruminate.
  • Morality Pet: Is basically one for the entire rest of the cast. She was the catalyst for Angela to start opening up to people when they first met in Elementary School and became friends. Angela returns the favor by being fiercely protective of her. Charles also grows more protective of Sam himself as she in turn unknowingly begins to melt his frozen heart. There also Link being protective of Sam after she helped overcome his Dad's death.
  • Must Have Coffee: She's a proud caffeine addict. In one episode, she call it her "one true love."
  • Nosebleed: After imagining being physically intimate with Link for the first time, her nose starts bleeding profusely. This causes her no small amount of stress because it keeps happening to her at inopportune moments and she doesn't know how to stop it. She manages to kick it by watching 3 hours of porn (at Vikki and Angela's prompting) and desensitizing herself to lewd thoughts.
"OH MY GOD! THIS IS SO PATHETIC AND CLICHE! AND NOT MEDICALLY POSSIBLE!"
  • Paralyzing Fear of Sexuality: The above nose bleeds are actually symptomatic of this problem — being the ill girl caused her family to be so protective of her that she never developed any kind of romantic experience with the opposite sex, aside from one flashback sequence that apparently ended poorly for her. At the start of the series, she considers herself so uneducated on the subject as to be a total lost cause. She apparently didn't even look at porn until she was 22 because she thought that was inappropriate for women to do.
  • Positive Friend Influence: She was definitely this to Angela when they met in elementary school.
  • Shrinking Violet: Sam hates confrontation and explicitly has social anxiety.

Marshall Law aka Benjamin Marshall Lawson

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/marshall_lawjpg.jpg

The Main Male Character of the series, he is a popular Let's Player on Viewtube with a massive fan-following. He moves in next to Sam at the beginning after his initial video review of her game goes live. Despite his initial rocky introduction to Sam after moving in, his character is peeled back as the comic goes on showing a soft-hearted young man with Depression who is simply trying to find his place in the world. He and Sam even slowly start to become genuine friends with her own circle of friends slowly embracing him as well.

  • Can't Have Sex, Ever: After his heart attack, he is informed that he needs time to recover so he can't do anything sexual with Monica. To make matters worse, he also can't preform "self-care" . . . for 4 weeks.
"YOU SHOULD HAVE LET ME DIE!!!"
  • Dysfunctional Family: While the details have yet to be explored more, from what Eva has said Marshall's relationship to his family is quite strained and almost none of them are proud of Marshall's success on Viewtube despite him actually doing quite well. And most likely none of them know of his depression either.
  • Follow in My Footsteps: Was initially in Law-School at his dad's alma mater because that was what his father wanted.
  • Hates Their Parent: Severely dislikes his dad due to everything his dad has put him, his sister, and his mother through. He is deeply suspicious when his father shows up claiming to want to make amends.
  • Heavy Sleeper: Is described as one by his sister Eva. Though that doesn't stop Eva from yanking on his ear and yelling at him to wake him up when he falls asleep on top of Sam.
  • Hollywood Heart Attack: Marshall suffers what appears to be a heart attack during the Season 1 finale, later described as a Real Life condition called Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy, which translates to "Octopus Trap Heart", also known as "Broken Heart Syndrome."
  • Looking for Love in All the Wrong Places: He was apparently something of a player when he was in law-school, so much so that his sister, Eva, found it hard to believe that he'd have a girlfriend at all. However, it's shown many times that he's very much a romantic at heart and desperately craves genuine affection from others, both hallmarks of depression. He is also shown to actually be quite respectful towards women, treating Monica kindly, and once Sam gets over her initial anger at him finds him to be a generally caring, if at times childish, person.
  • Mama's Boy: He apparently always took his mother's side in an argument.
  • Manic Pixie Dream Girl: A rare male example. Marshall's role in Sam's story fits the MPDG archetype as he is an energetic Manchild that breaks into the life of the introverted Sam and is the trigger that forces her out of her shell. He is slightly more developed than your typical MPDG, as it's shown multiple times he's struggling with depression and just projecting a confidant persona. He also has a strained relationship with his family, primarily his father.
  • Nerds Are Sexy: He's an accomplished Let's Player who's most likely beaten thousands of games in his career, but none of that stops him from being absolutely shredded and having the looks of a Jpop-star.
  • No Celebrities Were Harmed: Fans have noted the similarities to Youtube personality, Markiplier. The creator, for her part, has said that Marshal is an amalgamation of several Let’s Players and how she thinks they act in person.
  • Only Sane Man: When he goes to his first Yoga Lesson he finds himself surrounded by Sam's friends and their eccentricities from Vikki's ability to break the fourth wall with ease, Olivia's ability to understand everyone despite being mute and deaf (she can read lips), Edgar's uncanny ability to accomplish his mistress' requests, and Abe's perfectly chiseled figure.
  • Recovered Addict: He checked into a rehab center after he dropped out of law-school because he was "done trying to find happiness at the bottom of a bottle." He's been sober for a year.
  • Screams Like a Little Girl: Playing horror games like the jump-scare Not-Five Nights At Freddy's causes a "totally manly scream." He does it again when a gust of wind causes an upskirt from Sam, which does his current medically mandated abstinence no favors.
  • Stepford Smiler: Marshall's exuberant and energetic personality while recording is really only a facade to help cope with his depression, doesn't help that his relationship with his father is not that great.
  • Walking Spoiler: As seen in almost all the tropes in regards to Marshall, a lot of his backstory and deeper character is shrouded in mystery or hinted at including his real name, his family history, his relation to Eva, and his struggles with Depression. Basically talking about Marshall in any depth means large parts of the webcomic are spoiled for those who are not all caught up. Makes sense story wise as even Marshall himself hides his "True Personality" from everyone by hiding behind his "Marshall Law" personality.
  • Wrong Genre Savvy: Marshall wonders when due to his Japanese Heritage he will gain awesome uncanny abilities like a shonen hero, only to be told he's in a Romance comic not a Shonen. Which he of course doesn't believe.

    Lincoln "Link" Hudson

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/link_01.jpg

One of Sam's friends who works at "The Daily Grind," is quite the outdoorsman, and when introduced is shown to have a crush on Sam.

  • Death Glare: Gives Marshall a few when they meet face-to-face.
  • Dogged Nice Guy: Type 2, he has a crush on Sam, of which she is completely oblivious to, because she showed him unconditional kindness during a dark period in his life. His brother, Dallas, even calls him "Captain Friendzone." He later realizes his feelings for Sam are not romantic, and is hinted to possibly return Angela's feelings for him, but since he is unaware of Angela's feelings and her own personal issues it makes things rather difficult for them.
  • Interplay of Sex and Violence: Link appears to have a masochistic streak (which seems to be a reoccurring theme in this comic), if his visibly blushing at the thought of Angela pinning him down and threatening to beat him up is any indication.
  • Like Brother and Sister: Link realizes he has this relationship with Sam after trying to date her and kiss her stating outright that it felt like trying to kiss his sister.
  • Mr. Fanservice: Of the Hunk variety. Link is an avid rock-climber, and it shows he's got the Heroic Build for it.
  • Nice Guy: One of his most defining traits is the empathy he shows to just about everyone, such as protecting Marshall from Angela, even though he's well-aware of what the review did to Sam's game, and is angry about it himself. He also is the first to admit that he handled turning Sam down poorly when confronted by Angela, and is more then willing to let Angela beat him up if it will help her forgive him. He is also worried about Angela, both as her friend and because he may actually be developing romantic feelings for her.
  • Parental Substitute: Tries to be this for his brother Dallas, but Dallas isn't having it and angrily calls Link out on it.
  • Shout-Out: In keeping with running theme of references to old-school Nintendo games, Link is pretty much an Expy for Link.

    Charles Jones

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/charles_02.jpg

The Manager at Young Technologies and Sam's boss, he is from Wales and initially comes off as quite cold and aloof, though is shown to have a softer side as the series goes on. He becomes a mentor for Sam and tries to help her gain more confidence. He's also a her most prominent love interest through his playful teasing of Sam and constant efforts to help her grow and by playing her game, allowing the two to grow closer to one another.

  • Affectionate Nickname: As he and Sam start getting closer, he starts calling her "Bunty" without telling her what it means. note
  • Broken Bird: Charles is implied to be trying to cope with the memory of a broken heart and having trouble fully committing to relationships. Vicki even senses his own inner turmoil when she shakes his hand upon meeting him, which ends up overwhelming her.
  • Commitment Issues: He's not interested in relationships beyond casual sex and insists that his partners "never get attached." This stems from his ex-wife Gwen's infidelity, who even hid the fact she was pregnant with another man's baby. It caused him to develop a cynical out-look on marriage, believing that it "doesn't equal a happy ending." Despite his genuine growing feelings for Sam, he does not wish for her to get too attached to him, or for himself to get attached to her which proves harder than he expected.
  • Defrosting Ice King: Charles is heavily associated with ice and the cold to symbolize his icy demeanor. But Sam's big heart and warm attitude is quickly melting it.
  • Didn't Think This Through: In one of his more human moments, after he dramatically gives Sam the shirt off his back to spare her embarrassment, she points out that he could've easily given her his spare shirt rather than stripping down in front of her. He just looks at her sheepishly before finally blushing.
  • Dissonant Serenity: Charles' 6'5'' boss charges towards him, screaming his name, with murderous rage in his eyes because he suspects (correctly) that Charles has been sleeping with his daughter. All Charles can muster is a blank stare and the following line:
Charles: "Ah, I see. This is how I die."
  • Drama Queen: He has a flair for drama that wouldn't be out of place in a cheesy Shoujo manga. This comic being more self-aware, tends to have these moments fall flat for him as mentioned above.
  • Freudian Excuse: Gwen getting pregnant by someone else has completely made him lose interest in being able to keep a serious relationship, as he constantly blames enough for not satisfying her enough to the point she had an affair. This is emphasized by an image of Charles' Control over his emotions being puppeted by an image of Gwen in her bridal dress.
  • Friends with Benefits: Has an on-going one with Ms. Rosewood occasionally and previously implied to have had one with Eva. Tries to keep his relationship with Sam this way but Sam recognizes that Charles may actually want something more, but is unable to overcome his inner turmoil.
  • Gentleman Snarker: Due to his icy personality, he is professional and courteous the majority of the time but can turn around and puncture a person's argument or self-image with a quip quite efficiently.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: While not a complete jerk, Charles does come off as cold and demanding when first introduced, seemingly all business. Through continued interaction with Sam the layers are peeled back to reveal that Charles is actually quite kind and gentle, and has merely closed himself off to others due to past experiences.
  • Mr. Fanservice: Honestly shares this with all of the central male characters, even lampshaded by Sam at one point.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Because of how polite and gentlemanly he is normally, you can tell how serious he is when he coldly tells Eva to "stop being a bitch."
  • Pretty Boy: Charles has very refined features. Even the creator has said that he's the hardest to draw because of it.
  • Seen It All: The man is unflappable at the best of times and has had time to grow accustomed to the eccentric nature of the Young family members. When he enters the office to find his boss is crying in a fetal position on the floor he just steps over him and carries on with his day.
Charles: "Looks like I'm just in time for the morning breakdown."
  • Stealth Hi/Bye: Does this a lot. Eva calls him a "shifty weirdo" and says he should wear a bell around his neck.
  • Stiff Upper Lip: He's Welsh not English, but he seems to employ the British sense of being smugly polite and professional to counteract the weirdness of his boss.
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: Initially comes off as cold and commanding at the beginning of the comic but the layers and slowly peeled back and he appears to show genuine affection for Sam, and struggles to not get too attached to her.
  • The Tease: Oh goodness so much. He often teases and playfully flirts with Sam, to the point that she begins to develop an attraction to him as they grow closer. And as they spend more time together, he becomes attracted to her as well. He admits that he finds teasing Sam fun because of how easy it is. Sam though can easily turn the tables on him which makes his wish to not get too attached more difficult.
  • Trickster Mentor: Becomes one of these for Sam, taking her on as his assistant to train her to either take over her father's company or become successful running her own business as an indie game developer. A lot of this training involves building up Sam's self-confidence and handling her self-esteem issues through various unorthodox means, often having Charles use his unpleasant reputation and cold demeanor to manipulate Sam into bettering herself.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Terrified of needles due to accidentally stepping on a sewing needle as a child.

Friends and Loved Ones

    Bowser

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fc56b8052e4c5ca64c8c02cb11e975ac_2.png

Sam's loyal pet dog.

  • All Dogs Are Purebred: Averted, per Word of God, Bowser is a mixed-breed of a Welsh Corgi and Boston Terrier, which Sam later states when asked herself.
  • Canine Companion: Unless she has to go somewhere where dogs are not welcome, Sam and Bowser are practically inseparable.
  • Dogs Hate Squirrels: He has a run-in with a couple of squirrels during his A Day in the Limelight episode.
  • Precious Puppy: Bowser loves everybody, except Marshall, and everybody loves him back. He even takes to Charles rather quickly though this could be because they are both Welsh.
  • Shout-Out: Not only is he named "Bowser", but he has a chew-toy doll that looks suspiciously like Princess Peach.
  • Team Pet: And the Series Mascot. Abe even call him "Little Boss" when Sam explains she is AFK because she's fixing his Princess Doll.

    Angela O'Neil

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/angela_01_55.jpg

Angela is a dental hygienist (and cosplay enthusiast), and one of Sam's oldest friends who is very passionately protective of her. Deals personally with PTSD from being assaulted, and also dealing with lingering Anger issues.

  • Fiery Redhead: She apparently has anger issues as she'll fly into a blind rage when sufficiently prompted.
  • Broken Bird: Is still suffering from PTSD caused by her assault, which she ends up channeling into her rage. Though she grows to feel quite ashamed of her temper after she lashes out at Link who she also has feelings for.
  • Berserk Button: Do not under any circumstances harm Sam in anyway just ask the two girls who bullied Sam back in elementary school or Link and Marshall.
  • Casual Kink: It's implied that she's really into bondage and submission, which is unexpected from someone with PTSD.
  • Gamer Girl: She and Vikki are both part of Sam's World Of Warquest guild, and have been shown playing video games (such as a Not-God of War) in their free time. They credit Sam for getting them hooked on games in the first place, saying that the medium has since become a big part of their lives.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: Vikki and Angela live together and compliment each other very well, but their relationship is completely platonic (Angela recoils in horror/disgust when she see Vikki walking around their apartment naked), and both have shown to have dated men in the past. Angela is even shown to have a crush on Link, though she keeps her feelings secret both to not interfere with his obvious initial crush on Sam, and also her own personal issues.
  • I Have Brothers: She apparently has sextuplets for older brothers, which goes a long way towards explaining her Tomboy interests and anger problems.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Came off as mean and standoffish when she met Sam back in elementary school, but eventually warmed up to her and protected her from some bullies. Has since mellowed out losing most of her jerkish behavior thanks to her friendships with both Sam and Vikki.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Angela is the red oni to her friend Vikki's blue oni. Their hair is even color-coded correctly to match this trope.

    Victoria Willow Song (Vikki)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/vikki_01.jpg

Vikki Song is a calm and sweet yoga instructor (and Angela's cosplay partner), and Sam's other oldest friend.

  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: Meet the Queen of Fourth Wall Breaks. When she and Angela are discussing Sam's nosebleeds, Angela points out how it's medically impossible and only happens in anime, Vikki proceeds to bulldoze the fourth wall by literally pointing out they're in a webcomic that utilizes anime tropes, and that the creator would love for it to be adapted into an show. They immediately go back to the conversation like nothing happened. She does is it again when she literally reaches outside a panel to get Dinah back from Olivia, which causes poor Marshall to question reality and wonder why he's the only seemingly normal one.
  • Comic Relief: While not too the same extent as others she does not have any personal issues like other characters and is able to completely ignore the Fourth Wall which creates some truly hilarious moments.
  • Eyes Always Shut: Her eyes always look like they’re shut, and as is tradition, she’s the wisest and calmest person seen thus far.The only time her eyes are seen open is after her meeting Charles and having to recover from sensing his inner turmoil.
  • Home Nudist: Apparently she likes to strip naked whenever her roommate, Angela, isn't around. With only her Godiva Hair keeping the audience from seeing her naughty bits.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The blue oni to Angela's red. Their hair colors match the trope perfectly, and Vikki's calmness and serenity are often just the thing to temper Angela's fiery personality.
  • Ship Tease: With Abe.
  • Team Mom: Vikki is undoubtedly the most loving and caring of the central cast, and often keeps her roommate Angela under control, and is the first of Sam's friends to extend a hand in friendship to Marshall.[She is even represented by the emote-kun 'Love' in Angela's mind, and even calls Angela out on her pushing Link away and encourages her to talk to him.
  • The Empath: Is able to sense people's unease and able to share in their pain. When helping Marshall stand up she senses all of his inner turmoil and depression which moves her to tears, something that Abe notices right away and in turn invites Marshall to lunch with him. She later meets Charles and shakes his hand also sensing his emotional pain from being cheated on and his conflicting feelings towards Sam. These interactions do have an adverse effect on her, and after meeting Charles she does need to recover afterwards with help from Abe.

    Monica Mackenzie aka GlitzKitten

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/7e65742ec71d13608e021a494a72b884_6.png

"Head up, heels on, tits out, kiddo. You're a grown woman who is allowed to have some fun. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Especially yourself."

A beauty vlogger on both Instaframe and Viewtube, and secretly Marshall's girlfriend.

  • Expy: With Monica having Impossible Hourglass Figure, giant boobs, and a Good Bad Girl personality, as well as being the Only Sane Man to a famous entertainer, and suffering under a Madonna-Whore Complex, you could easily mistake her for Jessica Rabbit. Even her long pink hair is reminiscent of Jessica's famous red peek-a-boo locks.
  • Fake Boobs: She herself admits that they're about as "real as [her] hair color." note
  • Lovable Alpha Bitch: Monica is a popular beauty guru who's implied to have really gotten around before currently dating the main love interest of the comic—she's even introduced as having an "alpha female dog" aura. She warms up to Sam quickly though, affectionately calling her "Kiddo", complimenting her skin and offering beauty tips. She even gives Sam advice when she is told about Sam's dinner date with Charles. She also gets her own episode showing her personal struggles and lack of confidence, mostly in regards to her relationship with Marshall. These parts were cut out of the animated shorts however, wherein she just comes off as an Alpha Bitch.
  • Mentor Archetype: After Sam takes her makeup and dating advice to heart, Monica proclaims herself Sam's "fairy godmother" and takes it upon herself to mentor the late bloomer in the matters of emotions, relationships, and sex.
  • Positive Friend Influence: She's trying to be this to Sam by offering her clothing and make-up advice. So far, it seems to be working.
  • Shameless Fanservice Girl: Being a beauty vlogger with her own clothing line, her physical attractiveness is the product that she sells, so she's typically shown wearing very revealing clothing and rarely sporting a bra, with the requisite bouncing. This is unfortunately Deconstructed as she fears that Marshal's attempts at keeping their relationship a secret stems from personal shame on his part of being associated with her.
  • Slut-Shaming: She’s a beauty vlogger, who cuts an impressive figure, and dyes her hair bubblegum pink...it kinda comes with the territory. She and Marshall's sister Eva get off on the wrong foot when they first meet.
  • Victoria's Secret Compartment: As a recurring gag, she apparently hides business cards in her cleavage and isn’t shy about digging them out at the most opportune moments.

    Samuel A. Young Sr.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/samuel_a_young.jpg

Sam's dad and also owner and CEO of Young Technologies, who is incredibly protective of his daughter and madly in love with his wife.

  • Amazon Chaser: As large and intimidating of a man as he is, his wife can kick his ass. And he loves it.
  • Benevolent Boss: Is shown to have a great working relationship with his employees, even hilariously joining them to watch a competition on the computer at one point.
  • Berserk Button: Do not, and I repeat do not harm Sam in anyway or put her in a compromising situation when her dad is within in a fifty mile radius of you. You won't like the outcome.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Despite his eccentric behavior and quirks Charles admits that Mr. Young is an excellent business man which is why Charles enjoys working for him and is loyal to him and the company.
  • Comic Relief: Is one of the few purely comical characters so far, with each of his scenes usually ending in hilarity. He is shown though to have a legit reason for his overprotective nature towards both Sam and his wife, which he explains to Charles.
  • Foil: To Mr. Lawson, as they are both shrewd businessmen in charge of a powerful company with opposite-sex children, but their parenting styles are black and white — Mr. Young is a Bunny-Ears Lawyer who deeply loves his family, and has never pressured his children into pursuing careers he'd approve of, though he is unaware of Sam's desire to not take over the company. In contrast, Mr. Lawson apparently cares more about business than family, has a strained relationship with his wife (if they're not divorced), and played favorites with his children which resulted in Eva becoming The Resenter and Marshall burning out from the stress and dropping out of school.
  • Gentle Giant: Looks quite intimidating and stands taller than most of the cast at 6'5" with only Abe surpassing him in height. In truth he is actually quite the softy. Though as mentioned above don't do anything to harm his daughter, or else...
  • Large and in Charge: The CEO of his own company and one of the tallest characters.
  • Large Ham: His various reactions to situations, especially when they concern Sam or his wife.
  • Manchild: Despite his imposing figure, his unabashed love for his wife and quirky childish behavior come off as endearing and comical.
  • Papa Wolf: Sees himself as this towards Sam, though it's often Played for Laughs.

    Delilah 'Dee' Parker

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dee_01.jpg

The Manager at the Daily Grind and Sam's college roommate.

  • Adaptation Expansion: Dee is much more prominent in the Animated Adaptation, where she is presented as Sam's Only Friend (Angela and Vikki are totally absent). In fact it was the animated version which first revealed that Dee is gay. Readers of the comic had to check with Mongie whether this was to be taken as canon (it is).
  • Adaptational Sexuality: Averted. Word of God said she was always intended to be gay.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: When Link finally catches Dallas as the toilet paper thief he brings him to Dee and makes him apologize. Dee then surprises the brothers by hiring Dallas to work off the money lost from his thievery and is one of the first people to treat Dallas with respect and understanding.
  • Shipper on Deck: Encourages Sam to ask out Link because she thinks he's nice and good for her.

    Dallas Hudson

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dallas_01.jpg

A member of Sam’s World of Warquest guild and Link’s younger brother.

  • Abhorrent Admirer: Finds Angela extremely attractive, but makes it known through his rude comments and creepy ogling, which Angela does not appreciate in the slightest. He's even started taking pictures of her at the gym without her knowledge.
  • Annoying Younger Sibling: Is Link's younger brother and is shown to be quite a pain to the other characters. A lot of his immaturity is attributed to his dad's death and being the youngest person in the cast. Though it is unclear if he won't go down a darker more destructive path. When Dee hires him at The Daily Grind to pay off the money lost from him stealing toilet paper she is the first person to treat him respectfully, which surprises him.
  • Butt-Monkey: Dallas is often on the receiving end of punishment from Angela and Olivia, both in-game and in real life. Though due to being the Token Evil Teammate of the guild his punishments are often Played for Laughs. There are hints that maybe Dallas is starting to get a little annoyed with the treatment. He reacts with genuine surprise when Dee thanks him for his work when she hires him at The Daily Grind.
  • Green-Eyed Epiphany: Is shown to have a growing jealousy for Link and Angela growing closer when he sees them together.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He, at the very least, tried to help Sam's game by giving it a perfect score rating. Something no one else in the guild did.
xXNightKillerXx: [Rated Game: 10 out of 10] marshall sucks!
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: He’s not held in high regard by his guild members. The reasons are pretty self-evident.
  • Token Evil Teammate: To an almost ridiculous degree, especially with his snarky and misogynistic comments towards Angela, who has no problems putting him in his place. Though it can be implied that his acting out may be due to his and Link's father's death before the comic started.
  • Troll: Pretty much the best way to describe his personality. He’s constantly making misogynistic comments towards his female guild-members, calling his brother "Captain Friendzone," and generally getting under everybody’s skin. His friends put up with him, mainly because they know ignoring him drives him crazy, and because it’s clear that he’s just acting out due to grief from his father’s death. It's even lampshaded when it's revealed the character design of the Troll in Ruminate is based on Dallas, who admits that negative attention is better than no attention at all. He is even revealed to be the one constantly stealing toilet paper from the Daily Grind. Though it is revealed later this is for a cosplay costume he is working on. Link still tries to ground Dallas for stealing.

    Abraham "Abe" Calhoun

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/abe_01.jpg

A former College Football Player and Army Cadet who now teaches High School Biology and P.E.. He is the leader of Sam's World of Warquest Guild "The Rare Spawns"

  • A Father to His Men: While more of a Cool Big Bro to them Abraham is still undoubtedly the leader of the guild and cares deeply for each member keeping them all, especially Dallas, in check. He explicitly tells Dallas that he considers the guild his family after he stops him from smoking. Dallas even teases him calling him "such a Mother Hen".
  • Badass Teacher: A former Army Cadet and celebrated College Football Player prior to his injury. He now teaches High School Biology and P.E.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: While not able to top the Queen of Fourth wall breaks that is Vikki he still tells Marshall that he is unfortunately in a romance comic and not a Shonen series.
  • Career-Ending Injury: Is revealed to have played Football for the Army back in college but got injured during a Army vs. Navy Game.
  • Cross Player: His character avatar in World of Warquest is female, which Dallas often tells him is just plain weird.
  • Gentle Giant: While he towers over others and knows he puts off quite the intimidating aura (easily frightening the employees at the Pizza Place) he is actually quite kind. He is a High School Teacher, and he immediately catches on to Vikki's reaction to Marshall's turmoil deciding to invite Marshall out to lunch with him being the 2nd of Sam's friends to extend his hand in friendship to Marshall. He is also the one to help her when becomes overwhelmed after meeting Charles and sensing his inner turmoil too.
  • Large and in Charge: Standing at 6'10, he is the tallest member of the guild he leads and also the tallest Character in the entire cast.
  • Mr. Fanservice: Seems the author likes drawing muscular handsome guys. Marshall even describes him as made from "Every Girl's Wet Dream" which Abe does not deny one bit.
  • The Leader: Abe is undoubtedly this for his Guild which Sam and her friend are a part of even lampshaded by his player bio.
  • Ship Tease: Has some really sweet moments with Vikki. He even lets her borrow one of his sweaters to help with her with her ability to sense others' emotions.
  • Team Dad: He's stern but caring. Best exemplified when he confiscates Dallas' cigarettes without hesitation (Dallas isn't old enough to buy them) and begins lecturing him when he snaps back. He also is there to help Vikki when her empathy for others ends up draining her.

    Eva Lawson

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/eva_lawson.png

A competitive fencer and Action Girl, and Marshall's sister.

  • Daddy's Girl: She apparently always took her father's side in arguments.
  • Foil: She's one to Sam — Sam's relationship with her father and brother is presented as supportive and loving, and there doesn't seem to be any favoritism or competition involved. Meanwhile, whether intentionally or not, Mr. Lawson favored Marshall over Eva despite her being more career and business oriented, leading to her developing resentment towards her brother and Marshall cracking under the stress.
  • Hellbent For Leather: We only seen her out of leather clothes exactly once.
  • Heir Club for Men: Apparently on the receiving end of this, as it's implied that her sexist father only wanted Marshall to succeed him in the family business (despite his son clearly not being suited for it), and she's still bitter about it.
  • Hopeless Suitor: Her relationship with Charles is supposed to be casual, but she wants more.
  • The Resenter: Despite being the dutiful Daddy's Girl, her father still chose Marshall over her to be his successor, and she clearly never forgave him for that. Confirmed as much by the creator on her Twitter.
  • Sibling Yin-Yang: She and Marshall (or "Benji") could not be more different — She's combative, harsh, blunt, rude, and career-driven, whereas he is calm, fun, forgiving, childish, and friendly. She seems to resent him in some way, but that hasn't been explored yet.
  • Slut-Shaming: A habitual slut-shamer. She immediately antagonizes Monica by dismissing her relationship with Marshall and calling her a "leech." She gives the same treatment to Marshall - due to his Looking for Love in All the Wrong Places in college - calling him "slut puppy" and harshly lecturing him after he just had a Hollywood Heart Attack.
  • Tsundere: Of the Aggressive Submissive variety, as she has a BDSM relationship with Charles as his submissive, and it's implied that she intentionally tries to provoke him to get his "punishment." note
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: Out of the two children Mr. Lawson has, she takes after him more-so than Marshall ever could and she desperately wants his acknowledgment.

    Umed Patel

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/umed_01.jpg

Sam's original supervisor at Young Technologies and one of her closest friends.

  • Bollywood Nerd: He's of Indian decent (if his name didn't give it away), and he's programmer, and a high-ranking player in Underwatch.
  • Fat Best Friend: He's on the plump side, and he's Sam's closest work-friend. He even convinces Charles to give Sam a better role on a project, and also calls Charles out when he gives Sam the cold shoulder.
  • Professional Butt-Kisser: Zig Zagged. Umed admits to Charles in private that pretty much the only reason he decided to befriend Sam in the first place is because she is the daughter of the CEO and will probably be his boss someday. He saw the opportunity to get into her good graces before she had any real power and took it with the hopes she'd remember his kindness once she made it big. However, regardless of how insincere his initial reasons for approaching Sam might've been, by the start of the story he genuinely cares about her as a friend.

    Lucy

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lucy_01_9.jpg

Young Technology’s office receptionist, and one of Sam’s many office friends.

  • Big-Breast Pride: She doesn’t have big boobs, but she knows Sam does and tells her straight to her face that she’d "kill to have a rack as nice" as she.
  • Casanova Wannabe: She "flirts" with a mailman whenever he shows up, completely oblivious to how uncomfortable she makes him. Rather she interprets it as him being nervously love-struck by her charm.
  • Nerd Glasses: The thick kind. Unlike Sam’s, it makes her eyes look beady.
  • Nice Girl: Aside from some mild boundary issues, Lucy is a pleasant enough young lady.

    Olivia & Edgar

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/olivia_01.jpg
Olivia

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/edgar_01.jpg
Edgar

A young lady and her dutiful butler who're both part of Sam's World of Warquest guild.

  • Creepy Child: Dallas mocks Olivia for styling herself like this. He regrets it.
  • Huge Guy, Tiny Girl: She’s 4'5 (136 cm), while he’s 6'0 (183 cm).
  • The Gadfly: In contrast to the trollish Dallas, Olivia isn't above messing with people and dropping harsh truth-bombs, but it's with the best intentions.
  • The Jeeves: Edgar will seemingly do anything that Olivia tells him to. Including breaking someone's legs.
  • The Stoic: Edgar never emotes. Ever.
  • Vague Age: It's actually unclear how old Olivia is. The Q&A lists both her and Edgar’s ages as “??”
  • The Voiceless: Olivia is a deaf-mute and requires a text-to-speech function on her phone to communicate with people.

    Diana Rosewood

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/miss_rosewood.jpg

Diana Rosewood is the owner of a Modeling Agency that is located in the same building as Young Technologies and an "associate" of Charles.

  • Friends with Benefits: Well, "friends" is pushing it, but she and Charles occasionally get together to have no-strings-attached sex.
  • Frozen Face: Her botox injections give her a very youthful face, but she can't emote for a while afterwards. Even if she's furious.
  • I Just Want to Be Beautiful: She's apparently addicted to plastic surgery, and routinely gets botox injections. It's so bad that she's gotten the nickname "Stone-Faced Rosewood."

    Samuel Young Jr. (Jay)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/jay_01_1.jpg
Wears a bowtie and is a Doctor...hmmmm

Jay is a pediatrician and Sam's older brother.

  • Big Brother Instinct: We get several hints that throughout their childhood, Jay was always looking after Sam, such as defending her from bullies before Angela came in. It's implied that he became a pediatrician because he got so good at taking care of her.
  • Friend to All Children: You pretty much have to be to be a pediatrician.
  • Nice Guy: While he's curt to Charles, he seems to be a genuinely nice man.
  • Odd Name Out: Jay at first seem the odd-man-out in terms of the naming convention in the Young family. Later averted though as Mongie revealed that his full name is Samuel Young Jr.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: He's very clearly the son of Mr. Young, having similar muscle tone and face structure.

    James Lawson

Marshall and Eva's businessman father.

  • Abusive Dad: Though not shown, he is strongly implied to have been verbally and possibly physically abusive to his children, Marshall being terrified of him and Eva at one point being moved to tears.
  • Doesn't Know Their Own Child: Is clearly unaware of the effect his actions have had on his children, that Marshall is uninterested in becoming his heir, and that Eva is trying so hard to prove herself to him.
  • Archnemesis Dad: Marshall and his dad have a clearly antagonistic relationship with each other, even if it seems at first to be mostly one-sided.
  • Foil: Is seen as one for Samuel Young, both being owners of a profitable business with an intimidating presence. While Mr. Young is a loving father in a happy marriage and endearingly childish while being an excellent business man, Mr. Lawson is cold, distant and domineering towards his own children, and has a strained relationship with his wife.
  • Jacob and Esau: Is stated to have favored Marshall as the heir to his business despite Eva's best efforts to impress him.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Is clearly trying to manipulate Marshall for his own gain through Eva. For what purpose has not been fully revealed
  • Unseen No More: Has largely been absent from the comic and has only been mentioned for most of the episodes. His first appearance being during one of Marshall's nightmares where his face and eyes are obscured. He does finally makes his official appearance in Episode 150, though of course now much older and thinner.

     Samantha Young

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mother_01.jpg

Mr. Young's wife and Sam and Jay's mother. She works as a model for commercials and at the beginning of the comic is away filming in Florida

  • Girly Bruiser: Clearly in touch with her feminine side, but also able to kick your ass. Apparently, she used to be in competitive rollerderby which can be pretty brutal.
  • Improbable Weapon User: Has a tendency to use her bishie sparkles as an Improvised Weapon to subdue her husband. Which he absolutely loves.
  • Kicking Ass in All Her Finery: Just because she's wearing a dress and heels doesn't mean she can't tackle her 6'5" husband to the ground and hogtie him with his own tie.
  • Mama Bear: Is also quite protective of Sam willing to stand up to even Mr. Young.
  • Silk Hiding Steel: A proper lady to a powerful intimidating man, who is just as dangerous (maybe more so) and still be polite about it.

     Emote-kuns
The Anthropomorphic Personification of various people's emotions used in the story to describe characters' issues.
  • Allegorical Character: Each emotion maintains some issue a character has that defines them:
    • Personal Space, Friendship, Self-Confidence, and Anxiety: The basic self-explanatory emotions that Sam starts out with.
    • Love: Sam's unconditional support and affection for others. It also represents what Angela thinks about Vikki.
    • Jealously: Sam's envy over Marshall's relationship with Monica.
    • Lust: Sam's growing attraction to her love interests. It goes rampaging when she's drunk.
    • Depression, Regret, and Guilt: Marshall's default emotions when he's not playing his games.
    • Rage, Fear, and Shame: Angela's two forms of her PTSD which merge into the last one.
    • Control: Charles' refusal to let himself feel attached to people after his ex-wife's affair.
  • Back from the Dead: Lust is briefly seen dead after Link rejects Sam, but it revives after she realizes she might have feelings for Charles.
  • Rule of Symbolism: They're used to help show what a character is.
