Main Protagonist

    Cole MacGrath

Cole's Allies

    Zeke Dunbar

    Lucy Kuo

Agent Lucy Kuo

Voiced by: Dawn Olivieri
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/inFamous-Kuo-001_3336.jpg

An NSA agent who infiltrated the First Sons in New Marais, and was in contact with John White during his own undercover mission in Empire City. She later meets Cole and Zeke to take them to New Marais to prepare for Cole's eventual rematch with the Beast. She is later kidnapped by the Militia and forced to be a test subject in lab experiments that activate her Conduit powers, giving her the ability to control ice.

  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Not at first, but when she finds out that either the Conduits or all non-Conduits are going to be killed due to the plague and what must be done to stop it, she doesn't take it well. Especially apparent in the Good Karma path, wherein she actively tries to derail Cole's efforts to stop the Beast.
  • Dirty Coward: She betrays humanity to side with the Beast in order to save her own life.
  • Does Not Like Men: Implied to have a deeply ingrained distaste towards men in general, claiming she'd forgive Cole for choosing Nix over her due to her opinion that "guys suck at thinking with their brains" and responding with utter revulsion towards Roscoe for flirting with her. Ironic, considering she was initially going to be a Honey Pot to seduce Cole into joining her.
  • The Dragon: Becomes the Beast's second-in-command in the good route and Cole's in the evil ending.
  • Elemental Personalities: Before and after gaining her powers, Kuo values cold, hard logic with intentions as light as the snow she creates, many of her plans appealing to Cole's (and everyone else's) better nature by assisting the resistance and avoiding casualties. Her power of flight can even be read as her surveying a plan from on high like a guardian angel. Of course, over time ice can be harmful and can cause frostbite, her utilitarian mindset leading to her siding with the Beast.
  • Face/Heel Double-Turn: She spends most of the game advocating for selfless and heroic actions while Nyx advocates for selfish and violent actions. When it turns out that saving humanity would kill all Conduits, Kuo advocates the final selfish choice out of cowardice while Nyx advocates the final heroic choice out of a desire for revenge on the Beast and a fear of becoming a nobody in the new world.
  • Face–Heel Turn: It turns out that she would rather join the Beast, letting millions die, than sacrifice herself. You either side with her and end up becoming the Beast yourself, or fight her in the middle of the final boss battle, following which she'll pull a last-minute Heel–Face Turn before you destroy the Beast once and for all.
  • Flight: One of her secondary powers.
  • Foreshadowing: Perhaps unintentional, but in the first mission of the game, she says something along the lines of "People do strange things when they're scared." The entire reason she pulls a Face–Heel Turn is because she's terrified.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: Despite her stoic and icy persona, she gets upset easily whenever her suggestions are ignored, whenever she gets afraid, or if insulted in any way. This gets even worse when she becomes a Conduit to the point she looks like she is constantly on the verge of a Freak Out, angrily calling out Nix for any perceived wrongdoing and flipping out when Roscoe's pervy glances annoy her.
  • Heel Realization: In the Good Karma route. Before the end, she admits to her wrongdoing and urges Cole to do what he must to save the world, even if it costs her life. In the Evil Karma route, no such realization occurs as you've actually taken her side and become the Beast yourself.
  • Honey Pot: The Audio Files reveal that she initially planned to seduce Cole in order to get him to New Marais, but she quickly disregarded the idea after seeing it wouldn't have worked (since Cole was still reeling from the loss of Trish); her Plan B was promising him powers, which did the trick.
  • An Ice Person: Becomes an ice conduit (but not through a pleasant procedure).
  • I Just Want to Be Normal: Choosing Nix over her in the Power Exchange decision results in a particularly venomous rant about this, partly because her conversion to a Conduit was prolonged and extremely painful. She really does not like being a freak, and simply having powers now causes her to declare that she's "not an agent anymore", which upsets her.
  • Last-Name Basis: Of every single character in the game, only Wolfe refers to her first name, and that's only in the Dead Drops, where he'd be more or less required to.
  • Likes Older Men: Played for laughs when Cole asks her about Wolfe, and averted; it's not what he thinks:
Cole: So, he's not your significantly older boyfriend?
Kuo: I believe the term you're looking for is 'father figure'.
Cole: Hey, it's cool. I'm not gonna judge you.
  • Not So Stoic: She loses her cool if you make Cole decide to sacrifice all the Conduits. She doesn't take this lightly.
  • Painful Transformation: Among other things, Bertrand activated her powers by draining her blood and replacing it with an unknown substance.
  • Power Incontinence: Early on, Kuo had difficulty restraining her powers — at one point accidentally freezing Cole's cheek with a touch.
  • Punny Name: Her last name is pronounced "quo", setting up jokes such as "status kuo" and the like.
  • Realistic Diction Is Unrealistic: Averted. She has an awkward, clipped way of speaking.
  • The Spock: To Cole's The Kirk and Nix's The McCoy. As stated in the trailer and the game itself, Kuo is the voice of order among the three and provides arguments to do good deeds, many of her plans involving the assistance and endearment of allies and generally avoiding casualties. Subverted in the end, when she's the one advocating the ruthless option of allying with the Beast and sacrificing all the Muggles, albeit framing it in utilitarian terms.

    Nix

Nix

Voiced by: Nika Futterman
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/inFamous-Nix-001_9943.jpg

A trouble-making Napalm Conduit who lives in the swamps at the edge of New Marais. She gained her powers after a second Ray Sphere was detonated near her home, killing her family along with hundreds of other people. She also has a crush on Cole, constantly encouraging him to give into his darker impulses.

  • Ascended Fangirl: Claims herself to be a "fan" of Cole's when they first meet.
  • The Beastmaster: She manages to tame some of The Corrupted as her "babies". They're marginally under control, but not by much.
  • Character Death: The only one of the main characters whose death is unavoidable. Either she sacrifices herself to severely injure the Beast in the Good Karma ending, or is slain in combat with Cole in the Evil Karma ending.
  • Elemental Personalities: She is a conduit with powers over napalm, a highly flammable substance that clings to the things it incinerates, she herself developing an attachment to Cole over his more destructive capabilities and willing to use careless (and very destructive) plans regardless of who gets caught in the crossfire. Even her ability to teleport fits her in-and-out For the Evulz antics.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: Whenever someone else suggests achieving a goal by trying to help people and get them to fight by your side willingly, Nix doesn't just scoff at it, but acts like they're crazy for even thinking of it. From what she tells us of her childhood, she probably hasn't met too many nice people in her life.
  • Evil Is Burning Hot: She's a violent Nominal Hero with pyrokinesis powers.
  • Face/Heel Double-Turn: She spends most of the game advocating for selfish and violent actions while Kuo advocates for selfless and heroic actions. When it turns out that saving humanity would kill all Conduits, Kuo advocates the final selfish choice out of cowardice while Nyx advocates the final heroic choice out of a desire for revenge on the Beast and a fear of becoming a nobody in the new world.
  • Final Boss: If Cole chooses to join forces with the Beast.
  • Fluffy Tamer: She somehow manages to tame numerous Corrupted monsters into acting like her loyal pets.
  • Freudian Excuse: She's had a really crappy life. Her family was among those killed when Bertrand activated a Ray Sphere, and saw them get vaporized right in front of her. It didn't get any better after that.
  • Heel–Face Turn: She's willing to sacrifice herself to save millions, because she wants revenge on the Beast.
  • I Just Want to Be Special: One of the reasons why she sides with the humans instead of the Conduits. She fears that when everybody has powers, her own powers won't be special and she will just be a nobody again.
  • Kiss Diss: During the mission to fool the rebels, she and Cole start heavily flirting together before they start, with Cole eventually puckering up and leaning in to try to kiss Nix. Instead, Nix simply teleports away with him just barely missing.
  • The McCoy: To Cole's The Kirk and Kuo's The Spock. While Kuo's methods involves helping and working together with others, Nix is a sadist who's ideas and decisions appeal to Cole's id, her plots effective in getting the job in a fun, easy manner at everyone else' expense. Even when she winds up representing the good side in the end, advocating to activate the RFI to destroy the Beast, it is strictly for selfish reasons, i.e. wanting revenge for the Beast destroying her corrupted.
  • Nominal Hero: She's on Cole's side, but only so that she can cause mayhem for giggles and get her revenge on Bertrand. Even her Heel–Face Turn at the end is fueled entirely by her Roaring Rampage of Revenge against the Beast.
  • Playing with Fire: She can control fire and also manipulate a flammable oil.
  • Psychopathic Womanchild: She enjoys causing random mayhem and destruction, mostly for her own twisted amusement.
  • Pyromaniac: She enjoys setting fires and blowing things up.
  • Ragin' Cajun: She's a resident of the setting's equivalent of New Orleans and is a vicious napalm-flinging maniac.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: Against Bertrand and the Militia, namely for killing her family in a Ray Sphere blast, as well as a Corrupted that she later befriended.
  • Token Evil Teammate: Especially if you play as Good Cole.
  • Woobie, Destroyer of Worlds: She watched her mother get vaporized right in front of her eyes when Bertrand used her as fuel for the Ray Sphere, and befriended a Corrupted, only to have it die protecting her escape from the bayou. It's a little understandable she's a Pyromaniac Blood Knight when it comes to the Militia.

    Sebastian Wolfe

Dr. Sebastian Wolfe

Voiced by: Michael Ensign

A First Sons scientist who became an informant for NSA Agent Kuo. He helped Kessler with the invention of the Ray Sphere, much to his remorse. Cole tries to find him in New Marais for his assistance with stopping the Beast.

  • The Atoner: As he helped invent the Ray Sphere, he feels guilty for all the death and destruction it has caused. As such, he's more than willing to give Cole his other invention the Ray Field Inhibitor (RFI), the only weapon that can stop the Beast and his rampage.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Though straightforward most of the time, he gets notably sarcastic around Bertrand.
  • Manipulative Bastard: He tells Cole that the RFI will simply strip the Beast of his powers and weaken him, when in reality it will kill almost every other Conduit in the world as well.
  • Omnidisciplinary Scientist: In the dead drops, he mentions wanting to study the Corrupted so he can understand their biology and possibly develop some kind of repellent, but Bertrand forces him to make a nuclear missile instead.
  • Parental Substitute: Kuo describes him as being like her father figure, which implies they had a very close friendship.
  • Reluctant Mad Scientist: He's not really proud of creating the Ray Sphere for Kessler and Bertrand.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: He knows that the RFI may very well cause the extinction of Conduits, but he figured it was a necessary sacrifice to prevent the Beast and the Plague from destroying all normal humans in the world.
  • We Used to Be Friends: He states that he used to be friends with Kessler when first meeting Cole. Their friendship was apparently genuine as it's implied that Wolfe somehow knows that Kessler was a future version of Cole.

The Rebels

    The Rebels

The Rebels

A paramilitary group led by Roscoe Laroche, comprised of disgruntled citizens of New Marais who have taken up arms against Joseph Bertrand's Militia.
  • La Résistance: They oppose Bertrand's oppressive reign of terror over New Marais, so they are fighting back against the Militia in hopes of liberating their city.

    Rosco Laroche

Rosco Laroche

Voiced by: Jim Meskimen

The leader of the Rebels in New Marais, who decides to join his forces with Cole MacGrath against their common enemies, Joseph Bertrand and the Militia.

  • Dirty Old Man: As well as spending quite a bit of time apparently distracted by Kuo's ass, he also mentions his fondness for cat fights when Kuo and Nix start arguing.
  • Father to His Men: Despite his faults, he is loyal to his men.
  • Fire-Forged Friends: He's initially skeptical of Cole, due to the latter's Conduit powers. After the two work together in fighting the Militia, he becomes a much more supportive ally.
  • Rebel Leader: Needless to say, he's the leader of the Rebels that are fighting to liberate New Marais from the Militia.

The Militia

    The Militia

The Militia

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/inFamous-Militia-001_6571.jpg

Established and organized by Joseph Bertrand, the Militia are a paramilitary gang that has taken control of New Marais ever since the Corrupted began attacking the city. Ostensibly in place to restore and preserve order until government assistance can arrive, the Militia are extremely repressive towards the citizens — especially Conduits, whom Bertrand has declared war on.

  • Army of Thieves and Whores: They started out as hunters living in the swamps with no other purpose in life other than to hunt, get drunk, and assault the public in their free time. Bertrand organized them into a fighting force, but despite their mission of protecting the city from monsters and "deviants," they're just predators and criminals who do such things as mug citizens on the streets.
  • Cape Busters: While originally formed to defend New Marais against Swamp Monsters, the Militia also have a particular distaste towards Conduits, putting Cole on their "shoot-to-kill" list. For obvious reasons, they also oppose the Ice Soldiers as well.
  • Elite Mooks: Two of them.
    • As they don't use Conduits, the Militia employ heavily-armored men with mini-guns as elite infantry, they are muscular and are more imposing than the Militia Shotgunners.
    • They also employ Blackhawk helicopters either as transport or for combat, armed with rockets and miniguns.
  • Enemy Mine: It's unknown to them at the time, but the Militia helps to permanently take down their own leader, who is also the leader of the other factions, when he is in the form of the Behemoth. Furthermore, during the final confrontation with the Beast, they freely work with Cole and even cheer him on.
  • Fantastic Racism: They subscribe to Bertrand's hatred of Conduits.
  • Malevolent Masked Men: Most of them wear hockey masks.
  • Muggle Power: They feel threatened by the existence of the superhuman Conduits.
  • Right-Wing Militia Fanatic: They are Bertrand's private army of racist rednecks, they are not to be dismissed as typical militia though as they possess HMG's, miniguns, combat helicopters, and (as seen below) even a nuke.
  • Small-Town Tyrant: A bunch of redneck, trigger-happy gun nuts with a shoot-to-kill order towards Conduits. They also imprisoned the local police, and are oppressive towards the locals.
  • Too Dumb to Live: When Cole and Zeke are toting a stolen nuke in an attempt to kill the Beast, the Militia repeatedly intercept them and actually shoot at said nuke. Zeke even calls them out on it.

    Joseph Bertrand III (SPOILERS)

Joseph Bertrand III (AKA "The Behemoth")

Voiced by: Graham McTavish
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/inFamous-Bertrand-001_4030.jpg

The charismatic leader of the Militia, and the self-appointed ruler of New Marais. He uses his army to hunt down and kill suspected Conduits, whom he has labeled as "deviants" and "monsters". But in reality, Bertrand is actually a Conduit himself, who joined the First Sons in hopes of gaining superpowers. But much to his horror, he gained the ability to (uncontrollably) transform into a hideous giant monster, who can turn other people into mutated monsters (known as the Corrupted) as well.

  • Attack Its Weak Point: Glowing spots on his monster form, hitting anywhere else does nothing.
  • Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever: A gigantic maggot in his case. Called as much by Cole.
  • The Bad Guy Wins: Played with at first and ultimately subverted as of late. While his goal was to eradicate all Conduits and Cole's using the RFI in the Good Karma ending achieved what he set out to do, Bertrand's goals fall flat since Conduits still exist in the future. Although if Second Son is anything to go by, Cole's actions helped spread fear of Conduits just as Bertrand hoped, with people still viewing the former as the "Demon of Empire City".
    • Though in either case, Cole killing him wasn't part of the plan.
    • A third strike appears in Second Son; Delsin's efforts in the Good ending restore the hope of Conduits and humans living together in harmony, dampening Bertrand's original goals even further.
  • Bad Powers, Bad People: An utterly corrupt man whose Conduit powers turn him into a giant acidic bug monster.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: He really, really wanted to become a powerful Conduit. Wish granted.
  • Big Bad Ensemble: With The Beast in inFAMOUS 2. While the main goal is to stop the Beast, other problems can be traced to Bertrand, as he was responsible for founding the Militia gang, creating the Corrupted monsters, and giving the Vermaak 88 mercenaries their ice powers.
  • Biomanipulation: Aside from (unwillingly) turning into a monster himself, he can also mutate other people into monsters at will.
  • Blessed with Suck: His Conduit talents manifest as turning into a gigantic abomination against God and man whenever his emotional or physical state overwhelms his will, and making people into smaller versions of said abomination. By the way, all the abominations are man-eating and close to completely uncontrollable.
  • Blue-and-Orange Morality: He's so convinced of his own moral and spiritual superiority in God's eyes, and is so obsessed with his hatred of Conduits (despite being one himself), that he wants to turn innocent people into superhuman monsters just so that he can spread his belief of how evil and unnatural Conduits are to the rest of the world. Simply put, he is just as hypocritical as he is batshit insane.
  • Boomerang Bigot: He's a Conduit who hates other Conduits.
  • Clipped-Wing Angel: It's stated that his Behemoth form lacks the intelligence and higher reasoning of his human state, making it relatively easy for Cole and the Rebels to lure him into an ambush.
  • Climax Boss: Cole fights Bertrand (in his Behemoth form) in two different boss battles, before his eventual confrontation with the Beast.
  • Contrasting Sequel Antagonist: Of previous Big Bad Kessler, as far as motivations and intentions go. Bertrand joined the First Sons for no other reason than to benefit himself, while Kessler's purpose was Saving the World from the Beast. He tries to make Cole a hated villain of New Marais so he could fit the role of a hero, while Kessler purposely filled the role of a villain to mold Cole into a hero. Lastly, he wants to eradicate all conduits, while Kessler is responsible for making most of the conduits in the series.
  • Corrupt Corporate Executive: Before and after his involvement with the First Sons and Militia, Bertrand was a successful businessman who came from an aristocratic family, and he owns most of the Gas Works industrial district in New Marais. He also plans to sell off the Vermaak 88 ice soldiers to various dictators and warlords around the world, not only to make some huge profits, but also hoping that the rise of superhuman warfare will result in global fear and hatred against Conduits.
  • Deep South: He clearly exhibits many stereotypes of ultra-conservative, Southern white men; he's an extremely bigoted Christian crusader, out to smite those who question his morality and values in the name of his Confederate forefathers.
  • Driven by Envy: He thinks Conduits are abominations only because, upon taking the powers of a Conduit willingly, he became an Eldritch Abomination, while many other Conduits are perfectly fine.
  • Egocentrically Religious: He's such a massive narcissist, that he's convinced himself that he was chosen by God to change the world.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Despite ordering Dr. Wolfe to help him construct a nuclear missile (a last-resort fail-safe for fighting the Beast), you can tell he really did not want to actually use it.
  • Evil Is Hammy: He certainly hams it up whenever he gives speeches in public, or makes propaganda broadcasts on television.
  • Fantastic Racism: He wants to commit genocide on Conduits, considering them to be monsters. This is only because when he was granted the powers of a Conduit, wanting them, he was turned into the Behemoth.
  • Faux Affably Evil: He freely gives money to different charities and plants trees. At heart he's a horrible man, but has plenty of charisma.
  • Flunky Boss: He summons groups of Corrupted during his boss fights.
  • The Fundamentalist: He holds a strong conviction that Conduits and other superhuman entities are an unholy abomination against God. And although he's a businessman by profession, he has the demeanor of a fiery preacher when giving speeches to his followers.
  • Hate Sink: Murderous, self-centered, power-hungry, and hypocritical, Bertrand is hands-down the most vile character in both the first and second games, standing out as the only antagonist who is in absolutely no way a tragic figure.
  • The Heavy: For the second game. Defeating the Beast is the ultimate goal, but while Cole and company prepare for that, they have to deal with Bertrand first, as he's responsible for all the problems affecting New Marais.
  • Hiding Behind Religion: He boasts that everything he does, up to and including attempting a genocide of Conduits, is all part of God's plan, reasoning that Conduits don't fit into the divine plan as "creations of science". In reality, he himself is a Conduit, and was more than happy to be one until it turned out that the only power he'd gained was an uncontrollable transformation into a hideous monster; in his reasoning, if he had become a monster by activating his powers, then all Conduits, active or otherwise, were monsters.
  • Hollywood Exorcism: One mission towards the end of the game shows that he apparently has a habit of performing his own brand of "exorcisms" on Conduits. However, this sham ritual is actually just his setup for transforming them into the Corrupted.
  • Humanoid Abomination: Was a completely normal, although very power-hungry leader of New Marais before his grab at power from the Ray Sphere. After the Blast, he gained the ability to mutate people into biological abominations that were subservient to him and as we know, transform when very angry into an Eldritch Abomination. When you have these as powers, odds are you're this.
  • Hypocrite: Despite his hatred of anything that's not a regular human being, he is (both figuratively and literally) the biggest monster in the series. Oh, and the only reason he wants to destroy Conduits is due to extreme disappointment and disgust over his own superhuman powers.
  • I Just Want to Be Special: So much so that he massacred hundreds of people, including Nix's family, to get superpowers. It worked.
  • Insane Troll Logic: Bertrand has a very well-concealed version of this; his stated reason for setting the Conduits up for genocide is that, as "creations of science," they don't fit into the divine plan. In reality, he was more than happy to be one until it turned out that the only power he'd gained was an uncontrollable transformation into a hideous monster. So, in his reasoning, if he had become a monster by activating his powers, then all Conduits, active or otherwise, were monsters.
  • Involuntary Shapeshifting: Extreme anger and stress can trigger his transformation into the Behemoth.
  • It's All About Me: He joined the First Sons because he wanted powers, he outright admits that. When he didn't get the powers he wanted, he decides to make the world fear every other Conduit, while hiding that he's also one himself.
  • Karmic Transformation: Expected to become some kind of angelic superbeing, as he viewed himself as one of the good guys; even though while he does donate to charities and plant trees, overall he does far more evil than good. It seems he failed to realize that there's only one kind of person willing to murder hundreds, or even thousands, for the sake of personal power; and the powers he receives, and the form that he takes, reflect what kind of monster he truly is.
  • Killed Off for Real: Cole and the Rebels destroy Bertrand in his Behemoth monster form.
  • Lovecraftian Superpower: Both his ability to transform into an Eldritch Abomination and his ability to convert other people into the Corrupted count.
  • Not-So-Well-Intentioned Extremist: Bertrand claims that he just wants to protect New Marais from the "freaks" and "monsters" that threaten his fair city; but not only is he actually a freak himself, he was responsible for creating those monsters and setting them loose in the first place, all as part of his plans to seize power over the city, along with validating both his huge ego and self-hatred.
  • One-Winged Angel: But not at all in the way he wanted.
  • Personality Powers: The corrupt, over-the-top, self-aggrandizing politician that talks like a fire-and-brimstone preacher who turns half the city into Cole's enemy has the power to transform into an Eldritch Abomination and convert other people into monsters.
  • Psychological Projection: He views all other Conduits as monsters, because his powers manifested as turning into a literal monster himself.
  • Running Both Sides: As Bertrand, he is the leader of the Militia. As the Behemoth, he is the leader of the Corrupted. He sets up both groups to be opposed to each other.
  • Tautological Templar: Boasts that everything he does is part of God's plan. Makes the argument that him becoming a Conduit would allow him to carry out God's work, and when things don't go his way he argues that Conduits are an abomination against God.
  • Villain with Good Publicity: Despite his anti-Conduit agenda, with the onset of the Corrupted, New Marais quickly turned to Bertrand and his Militia for security and leadership. At least until Cole exposes him as a Conduit and the source of the Corrupted.
  • Villainous Breakdown: During one of Wolf's dead drops, Bertrand has a full-blown temper-tantrum when he discovers the nature of his powers, complete with furious accusations, death threats, anguished pleas to God, broken glass, and a loud and angry shout of "I AM NOT HAPPY!"

Miscellaneous

    The Corrupted (SPOILERS)

The Corrupted

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/inFamous-Corrupted-001_1071.jpg

A race of mutant monsters that suddenly emerged from the swamps of New Marais, the Corrupted periodically attack the city in large packs. They are actually the transformed victims of Bertrand's Conduit powers, used to fool the public into supporting him.

    Vermaak 88

Vermaak 88

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/inFamous-Vermaak88-001_7878.jpg

A group of mercenaries employed by a South African PMC. Hired by Bertrand to work in New Marais, they were given ice-based superpowers (extracted from Lucy Kuo), and put in stasis for later sale to dictators around the world; unfortunately, they were accidentally released by Cole, resulting in them taking over the flooded areas of New Marais.

  • Amoral Afrikaner: They're South African mercenaries. However, they didn't seem to be particularly villainous until after they got their ice powers.
  • An Ice Person: All of them have ice powers to a certain extent: some of them can propel themselves across great distances by creating explosions of ice under them, while more advanced members tower over the battlefield on pillars of ice and freeze their enemies solid. The most powerful of the Vermaak protect themselves with giant suits of armor composed of solid ice — which eventually leads to them actually becoming ice.
  • Ax-Crazy: Their transformation into Conduits made them very violent and prone to attacking anything they see.
  • Boss in Mook Clothing: The Crushers and Titans serve as mini-bosses.
  • Defector from Decadence: One shows up in the Good side missions to help Cole take out other members of Vermaak. He later shows up as a Heavy, and later, a Titan... as his sanity degenerates with his increasing mutations until Cole has to Mercy Kill him as a Titan.
  • Elite Mooks: The Heavy troops.
  • Empowered Badass Normal: Deconstructed. They were already experienced war veterans before getting their superpowers. But as they weren't born with Conduit genes, their minds will degrade, while their bodies undergo terrible mutations.
  • Firing One-Handed: Vermaak shotgunners aim and fire their semi-auto shotgun one-handed.
  • Fragile Speedster: The baseline Vermaak troopers; out of all the low-level troops across the two games, these are arguably the fastest and most agile. However, they're still just soldiers, and they fall just as easily as the others.
  • Kill It with Fire: They are weak against Napalm attacks from Nix and Cole, if he decides to copy her powers.
  • Madness Mantra: "We will be whole!" It's suggested that this refers to their search for a Blast Core to heal their insanity.
  • Mighty Glacier: Appropriately, the iceberg-like Titans. Massively-built, capable of great offensive power... but very, very slow.
  • Private Military Contractors: They're stated to be mercenary soldiers working for a South African private military company.
  • Psycho for Hire: Averted; Wolfe's dead-drops show that the Vermaak were mentally stable prior to gaining superpowers; it took their transformation into Forced Conduits to bring them into the state of Blast Core-obsessed violence they're seen in.
  • Sanity Slippage: At least one of the mercenaries managed to retain his sanity, and tries to aid Cole in stopping his former comrades. Sadly, as he grows more powerful, he also gets progressively more deranged, until he loses all control as a Titan and has to be put down.
  • Superpowered Mooks: They are literal supersoldiers with ice-based superpowers.
  • Tragic Monster: Much like the Corrupted, the Vermaak's powers were forced upon them by Bertrand, and they're driven by a desperate need to fix their eroding sanity by using the Blast Cores.
  • Transformation Horror: They gradually transform from humans into monsters made of ice.
  • Vader Breath: The Heavy infantry.
  • With Great Power Comes Great Insanity: As ordinary humans are not physiologically equipped to handle Conduit powers, the Vermaak have been driven almost completely insane by their transformation into Forced Conduits, with decreasing sanity as the transformations become more extreme.

    The Beast (SPOILERS)

"The Beast" (AKA John White)

Voiced by: Phil LaMarr
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/the_beast_7602.png
"Humanity is dead. Help me save what I can."

The Beast is an immensely powerful Conduit that the First Son's leader, Kessler, believed would eventually come to destroy the world in the near future. While only mentioned as a Sequel Hook at the end of the first game, he appears as one of the main antagonists in the second game. It eventually turns out that the Beast (or at least the version we see in this timeline) is John White, who was resurrected and transformed after the Ray Sphere destroyed his original body. John believes that the only way to save the world from the deadly Plague is to activate the powers of any remaining Conduits to help them survive, at the cost of dooming the rest of the human species.

  • Affably Evil: Makes it clear that he bears humanity no ill will, and even apologizes for attacking Cole once he's coherent enough to speak.
  • Anti-Villain: He's a Well-Intentioned Extremist. Yes, he needs to be stopped, but he doesn't even want to do what he's doing. He just feels that he has to.
  • Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever: In battle, he transforms into a 10 story tall lava monster.
  • Bald of Evil: In both his human and monstrous forms.
  • A Beast in Name and Nature: Known simply as the Beast, likely a nod to his apocalyptic nature.
  • Being Evil Sucks: He admits that he cannot live with the atrocities he is forced to commit for the greater good.
  • Big Bad Ensemble: With Joseph Bertrand III in inFAMOUS 2. Though most of your time is spent fighting Bertrand and his various creations, your main goal is still trying to stop the Beast.
  • Covered with Scars: In human form. Probably a symptom of having had to pull himself together on multiple occasions, including being torn apart by a Ray Sphere, having half of his head blown apart by a lightning strike, and being hit with a nuclear missile.
  • Dark Messiah: He's actually attempting to save the Conduits from The Plague.
  • The Dreaded: The future threat of global destruction caused by the Beast was so great, that it led Kessler to plotting all the events of the first game as part of his grand scheme to force Cole to ultimately fight and defeat the Beast, hoping to prevent the upcoming apocalypse from ever happening.
  • Final Boss: Of the second game. But only in the Good Ending.
  • Final Boss Preview: You first fight him at the beginning of the second game. Of course, you can't beat him then, only escape from him.
  • From a Single Cell: Regenerates in a few hours after being leveled by a nuclear missile. Also did this after being absorbed into the Ray Sphere in the first place.
The Beast: I had to pull myself back together. Do you have any idea how hard that is?
  • Greater-Scope Villain: Everything Kessler does in the first game all links back to him.
  • Humanoid Abomination: It turns out he used to be a normal man though.
  • Implacable Man: Tracks you all the way from Empire City to New Marais, despite the entire US army being thrown at him along the way.
  • Knight of Cerebus: While he doesn't appear again until the end of the game, The Reveal that occurs regarding him, and the true purpose of the RFI show the game will not be ending on the same high note regardless of Cole's choices.
  • Magma Man: Uses his flame powers to create a volcanic body for himself.
  • Make My Monster Grow: Can change himself from a human sized form into a massive golem made of lava and fire.
  • Miles to Go Before I Sleep: In the Evil Ending, the Beast admits to being deeply tired of killing, and that he would have preferred to remain dead if he hadn't had a mission to complete — hence the reason he transfers his power to Cole.
  • Mind over Matter: Can suspend Cole in midair and suck targets into a ball of fire using his powers.
  • Names to Run Away from Really Fast: He's named after The Beast that appears in the Book of Revelation. However, he personally rejects this as an unwanted nickname.
  • Nigh-Invulnerable: Can take massive amounts of punishment from gun and rocket fire before showing any signs of damage. Even a nuclear missile can only temporarily destroy his body, and the only known way of killing him for good is the Ray Field Inhibitor.
  • Passing the Torch: Gives Cole all his powers in order to save the rest of the world's Conduits before allowing himself to die in the evil ending.
  • Person of Mass Destruction: Destroys most of the East Coast before the end of inFAMOUS 2. Looking at the map shows his path has cut a scar into North America that makes the Grand Canyon look like a paper cut.
  • Personality Powers: It would be easy to see the Beast as being allegorical of the Plague (especially considering he emits the very radiation that caused it), along with the civil unrest and the new Conduit-based arms-race that science hath wrought all rolled into one. He is a massive, unknowable, unstoppable Beast of the Apocalypse that lays waste wherever he goes. He can't be fought, he can't be bought, he can't be reasoned with (having legitimate reasons of his own for his actions) and will not rest until the humans die and the Conduits survive. The fact that he can take human form, become invisible, telepathically communicate with Cole and teleport is indicative of how omnipresent his threat really is. His powers possess a fire-motif, his Ray Sphere-esque method of activating Conduits being him burning the human away for the Conduit within to emerge like diamonds in coal, the rest reduced to nothing but ash.
  • Physical God: He is perhaps the single most powerful Conduit or superhuman being seen in the series so far.
  • Playing with Fire: The Beast's main powers are based on manipulating flames and heat, implying that his powers would have been fire-based if the Ray Sphere that vaporized him went off like normal.
  • Pulling Themselves Together: Can simply rebuild his volcanic body when damaged. When he does rebuild his body, a black holes forms and sucks in everything until The Beast has reincarnated. This is also how John brought himself Back from the Dead after being disintegrated by the Ray Sphere.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Both his "armored" and "human" form have glowing red eyes.
  • Satanic Archetype: The Beast is presented as the strongest of his kind (conduits) unbeatable in his level of power. He was even the incorruptible agent for good John White, who wished to ensure humanity's safety before he "fell". He is associated with the color red and fire (possibly as a fire conduit if the faulty ray sphere had not vaporized him), and he even tries to "tempt" Cole with a future where mankind can be survive through activated conduits at the expense of the rest of humanity. Good!Cole fulfills the role of Messianic Archetype by sacrificing himself to slay the Beast, while Evil!Cole takes on the role as The Antichrist when the Beast leaves his powers and his mission to transform the world to him. Even his name can be seen as a reference to the "Beast of Revelation", a name some have attributed to Satan or something adjacent to him.
  • Shout-Out: His origins having been a normal guy given godhood after a scientific experiment gone wrong vaporized his body, leading to him pulling his body back together is awfully similar to the origins of Doctor Manhattan from Watchmen.
  • Super-Empowering: Can awaken, enhance, or transfer his abilities to any Conduits in his immediate vicinity. Cole uses this to gain infinite energy and the ability to fly in the evil ending of inFAMOUS 2.
  • Superpower Lottery: He's easily one of the most powerful and versatile Conduits alive.
  • Teleportation: Can appear and disappear into thin air at will.
  • Tragic Monster: He went from being an ordinary federal agent who was just trying to stop a terrorist bombing, to a reluctantly apocalyptic supervillain trying to save humanity the only way he knew how.
  • Walking Wasteland: He's actually a living Ray-Sphere; the wastelands he leaves behind are the results of awakening Conduits, leaving destruction similar to the original Ray-Sphere detonation.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: He's actually creating Conduits who can survive The Plague, but has to kill the dying, "normal" humans to do so. He even admits to Cole that he wishes there was another way.
  • Walking Spoiler: Just knowing about him is a major spoiler for the first game, since his very existence is only revealed at the end. And his identity and motivation in the sequel is such a huge game-changer that he qualifies for that as well.
  • Was Once a Man: He's John White, the person who got torn apart by a Ray Sphere in the first game. It also turned him into the Beast.
