MAD TRIGGER CREW

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mad_trigger_crew.png
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/logo_yokohama_color.png
The Yokohama Division representatives. Led by former The Dirty Dawg member and yakuza Samatoki Aohitsugi, the team consists of him, policeman Jyuto Iruma, and navy veteran Rio Mason Busujima.

Their Color Motif is blue.

  • Animal Theme Naming: Each of their names contains a kanji character for an animal.
    • Samatoki's contians a 馬 ("ma") for horse.
    • Jyuto's contians a 兎 ("to") for rabbit.
    • Rio's contians a 鶯 ("o") for bush warbler/nightingale.
  • Anti-Hero Team: Given to being a Foil to Buster Bros!!!, they're among the most morally gray main characters in the series.
  • Anti-Police Song: "Bayside-Suicide" can be viewed as something close to it. It even has the "Fuck the police" line.
  • Arc Number: 045, Yokohama's area code. Jyuto's MC name is 45 Rabbit, while the number itself is mentioned in several of MTC's songs.
  • Darker and Edgier: In comparison to the rest of the divisions, MTC are thematically more grim, frequently featuring the topics of violence, crime and war.
  • Foil: To Buster Bros!!!.
  • Finger Gun: MTC's signature hand sign.
  • Fire-Forged Friends: The first time Samatoki meets Rio ends up in them fighting each other, while Jyuto's attempts to defuse the situation end in naught. After teaming up and fighting off the thugs around them, Samatoki and Rio develop a mutual respect.
  • Gangsta Rap: Their style is heavily inspired by it.
  • Gun Porn: As expected of MAD TRIGGER CREW, their songs feature quite a lot of firearm-related imagery. The two guns on the MTC logo speak for themselves.
  • Image Song:
  • Motifs: Triangles. They can be found as the pendant on Samatoki's necklace, on Jyuto's collar pins and tie clip, and as pins on Rio's breast pockets. Their level-up item in ARB is also shaped like a triangle.
  • Must Have Caffeine: All three of them have a taste for coffee. As depicted in the side B.B & M.T.C manga, Rio even grows his own coffee beans at his campsite.
  • Odd Friendship: How else would a yakuza, a cop and a soldier get along?
  • Ragtag Bunch of Misfits: A Yakuza, a Dirty Cop, and a Rogue Soldier.
  • Ruder and Cruder: The lyrics of their songs tend to be harsher, compared to other teams, with more frequent usage of profanity.
  • Sensitive Guy and Manly Man: Jyuto is a Sensitive Man, albeit to a degree, while Samatoki and Rio both count as Manly Men.
  • Shout-Out: "Scarface". Exactly what you thought.
    • To add to the pile, Jyuto has a line "Say hello to my little friend" and the music video for the song features a "The World Is Yours" blimp.
  • Smoking Is Cool: While not the only smoking characters in the series, Samatoki and Jyuto arguably smoke the most.
  • True Companions: A frequent theme in MTC song is their loyalty to each other and how betrayal is not an option for them. Notable examples are G anthem of Y-CITY and 2DIE4.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: Samatoki and Jyuto.
  • Water Is Blue: MTC's Color Motif is blue and a number of their song contain sea imagery, due to Yokohama being a port city.

MC Name: Mr.Hc (Mr. Hardcore)
Age: 25
Birthday: November 11 (Scorpio)
Height: 186 cmnote
Rap Ability: Counter Blow
Dislikes: Hypocrites, being ordered around, bugs
Least Favorite Food: Carrots and bell peppers
The Leader of the MAD TRIGGER CREW. A former member of Mad Comic Dialogue and The Dirty Dawg, and the second-in-command of the Katen yakuza group.
  • Abusive Parents: He and Nemu grew up with an abusive father, who was eventually killed by their mother.
  • Armor-Piercing Question: In the "All in the same boat" drama track, he asks Nemu why she is not wearing the bracelet she herself made from their mother's charm. Although she tries to dismiss it at first, her determination started wavering.
  • Batman Grabs a Gun: Despite his rule to never raise his hand at a woman, he does take a swing at Ichijiku in Rhyme Anima, before Jyuto stops him.
  • Berserk Button: While he is pretty easy to provoke in general, mentioning Ichiro in any capacity is a fool-proof way to make Samatoki flip off instantly.
  • Big Brother Instinct: To his younger sister, Nemu. Justified, as per his harsh family complications in the past.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Although unintentionally, Samatoki saved Jyuto from the drug dealer gang he was targeting, just before they were about to kill Jyuto. That eventually resulted to Samatoki forming a team with him.
  • Blood Knight: He is very prone to start fights with pretty much anyone, to the point when Jyuto has to constantly keep him in check.
  • Cool Big Bro: Was one to Nemu before she left him.
    • As depicted in The Dirty Dawg manga, he used to be somewhat of a big brother figure to Ichiro.
  • Couldn't Find a Lighter: Shared a cigarette kiss with Jyuto in Rhyme Anima and one with Sasara in Dawn of Divisions.
  • The Dreaded: His past glory in The Dirty Dawg and a reputation of a vicious yakuza earned him that status. As seen in the first MTC drama track, several gang members backed down as soon as they recognized Samatoki.
  • Energy Absorption: His Rap Ability "Counter Blow" allows Samatoki to absorb the damage he suffered in battle, increasing his own power.
  • Establishing Character Moment: In his very first appearance in the side B.B & M.T.C manga, Samatoki breaks into a shady massage parlor and saves several uncomfortable women in skimpy outfits from his former underlings by beating the absolute crap from them. When he was apprehended by the police, Samatoki allowed them to take him in, only telling the women to stay safe.
  • Expository Pronoun: Switches between "ore" and "ore-sama" (both pronouns used for assertive and masculine men) depending on how pompous he'd like to present himself as.
  • Fighting Your Friend:
    • Got attacked by Sasara, unaware that he was brainwashed, who would later quit Mad Comic Dialogue. Samatoki notably didn't fight back, not wanting to hurt him.
    • Was forced to fight Ichiro by the Party of Words, believing that they kidnapped Nemu and threatened her if he refuses.
    • Fights Jakurai in the 1st Division Rap Battle.
  • "Get Out of Jail Free" Card: In the first MTC drama track, Jyuto gets him out of the cell by blackmailing his fellow police officer.
  • Good Old Fisticuffs: When mics are unnessessary, Samatoki lets his fists do the talking. As the Tobari brothers can attest, Samatoki is equally as dangerous even without his Hypnosis Mic.
  • Gratuitous English: "Yokohama Walker" and "Shinogi (Dead Pools)". Both have intros by Samatoki in gratuitous English.
  • The Grim Reaper: In Rhyme Anima, some of his rap attacks materialize as a stylized Grim Reaper: a skeleton with a scythe, wearing a jacket, a hat and a golden chain.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: It's very easy to provoke him to the point where he immediately resorts to physical violence.
  • Hell-Bent for Leather: In The Dirty Dawg era, he wore a leather jacket with "Life is not fair" written on the back.
  • Heroic BSoD: Went through one when a brainwashed Nemu said that having him among her kin is an embarassment. Samatoki was so distraught that he almost allowed the Chuohku officials to arrest him, if not for Jyuto and Rio helping him snap back to his senses.
  • Heroic Second Wind: Pulls this in Rhyme Anima, during the Division Rap Battle. As Ichiro lands a devastating attack on him, Samatoki's mind seemingly shuts down and he gets close to falling down. However, as everyone were concluding that it's over, Samatoki suddenly bounced back and defeated Ichiro at the last moment.
  • Hidden Depths: His love of vintage clothing, particularly aloha shirts, gets pointed out every so often.
  • Image Song:
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He may be aggressive and short-tempered, but once you get to know him more he’s not a bad guy. He unconditionally loves and respects his sister, values his teammates, and is willing to show mercy even to those who crossed him, depending on circumstances.
  • The Leader: Is the leader of MAD TRIGGER CREW.
  • Made of Iron: In certain situations (for example, when his allies are in danger), he is capable of taking quite a heavy beating when no alternative is present.
  • Missing Mom: His mother commited suicide after murdering her abusive husband.
  • Neighbourhood-Friendly Gangsters: Samatoki is very respected by the common folk of Yokohama. In the bonus comic for the side B.B & M.T.C manga, he is shown helping old women and warding off the thugs from restaurants, which earned him a good reputation.
  • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: His ARB card "Daily Life in Hama" features him doing pretty much that.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: It is frequently discussed that he is not so different from Ichiro. They're both powerful and hot-headed fighters, both are very passionate about their interests, and love their siblings a lot. In the bonus drama track for The Dirty Dawg manga, Samatoki and Ichiro both consider their similarities after constantly bumping into each other, but neither admit it.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Played for Laughs. After MTC lost the 1st Division Rap Battle, Jyuto is certain that Samatoki will berate him and Rio for their loss. Cue their meeting and all Samatoki does is treating them to coffee and saying thank you for sticking it out with him. Jyuto is so shocked that he even checks Samatoki's temperature, thinking that his kindness might just him being sick.
  • Pet the Dog: Mostly towards Nemu and his teammates.
    • Even being terrified of Rio's cooking, he's eager to eat it, just to make Rio happy.
    • In Rhyme Anima, one of Samatoki's underlings, Rentei, was forced to be The Mole for a rival yakuza clan, as they kidnapped his younger sister. In the end, Samatoki expels Rentei from the clan and doesn't push for a harsher punishment, respecting Rentei for caring for his sister.
  • Punny Name: "Aohitsugi" translates to "blue coffin", and his speakers are shaped as a skeleton emerging from a coffin.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: His eye color is enough of an indication that he is absolutely not someone to be messed around with.
  • The Rival: To Ichiro.
  • Shovel Talk: Discussed. He threatens to do this if Nemu ever gets a boyfriend, but Nemu says she'd never introduce him to Samatoki in the first place, given his behavior.
  • Sir Swears-a-Lot: As expected of a rough yakuza, he speaks rather coarsely, to the point that he even got censored in the Know Your Enemy drama track. In the Funimation translation of the anime, the general lack of variation in the profanity exaggerates this trait.
  • Skeleton Motif: His Hypnosis Mic and speakers are shaped like skulls, and he frequently uses skeleton imagery in his rap. Fitting, considering that MTC's logo is a skull.
  • They Call Me MISTER Tibbs!: Insists on being called "Samatoki-san" by those whom he sees beneath him (mainly Ichiro).
  • Tragic Keepsake: He always wears a bracelet that Nemu made from their late mother's charm.
  • Unscrupulous Hero: In contrast to Ichiro's All-Loving Hero, Samatoki is much more ruthless and jaded, openly stating that he wishes to take the world back from Chuohku and shape it in his vision.
  • White Hair, Black Heart: Subverted. Despite having white hair and being a ruthless yakuza, he's more of a Jerk with a Heart of Gold than anything.
  • We Used to Be Friends: With Ichiro, Sasara and Ramuda.
  • Wouldn't Hit a Girl: Despite his strong hatred of the Chuohku regime, it is stated that Samatoki would never raise his hand against a woman because of the respect he has for his mother and sister.
  • Yakuza: He is the second-in-command (wakagashira) of the Katen yakuza group.

Age: 29
Birthday: May 30 (Gemini)
Height: 181 cmnote
Rap Ability: Prison
Dislikes: Baseless words, illegal drugs, birds
Least Favorite Food: Red bean paste
A corrupt police sergeant of the Yokohama Police Department and Samatoki's Friend on the Force.
  • Affably Evil: He isn't evil, per se, but he's certainly not morally upright. Despite this, he can act rather polite and friendly to his enemies while provoking them at the same time.
  • Animal Motifs: While all MTC members have kanji for animals in their names, Jyuto's rabbit motif is relatively more prominent. His MC name is 45 Rabbit, he has the line "I'm a lonely, only rabbit" in "Bayside Smoking Blues", and is frequently called "bunny cop" ("usa-kou", by Samatoki) or "usa-chan" (by Ramuda) as a mockery.
  • Badass in Distress: As seen in the All in the same boat drama track, Jyuto got captured by the drug dealers he was tracking. Before they managed to kill him, Samatoki broke into their lair and rescued Jyuto.
  • Badass in a Nice Suit
  • Berserk Button: Everything related to drugs and drug dealers can make him snap in an instant.
  • Character Catchphrase: "I'm throwing you into the slammer", to anyone who irritates him.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Jyuto lost both of his parents to a junkie driver, who was high and ran them over. Determined to get rid of drugs, Jyuto became a police officer and befriended his superior officer, whom he also lost to drugs. All the losses he suffered because of the drugs made Jyuto take more drastic measures to take down the drug trade, involving breaking the law.
  • Dirty Cop: Determined to bring down the drug trade, Jyuto definitely isn't picky with his means. He's not above blackmailing, bribery and extortion, as well as being a Friend on the Force for the Katen yakuza group.
  • Drugs Are Bad: Jyuto absolutely despises drugs and drug dealers, going out of his way to stomp out the drug trade by any means necessary, even if he has to break the rules.
  • Embarrassing Nickname: Samatoki occasionally calls Jyuto a "bunny cop", which ticks him off quite a bit.
  • Everyone Has Standards: He isn’t unwilling to resort to blackmail, extortion, and the like just to get his way and is secretly involved with the yakuza, but his anti-drug stance is genuine and firm despite everything.
  • Fair Cop: In a series with the Cast Full of Pretty Boys, it's a given that Jyuto is a fairly attractive policeman.
  • Friend on the Force: Is one for Samatoki and the Katen yakuza group as a whole.
  • Get a Hold of Yourself, Man!: When Samatoki goes through Heroic BSoD and almost allows Chuohku to arrest him, Jyuto yells at him to snap out of it, reminding Samatoki of his promise to help Jyuto with his goal to eradicate the drug trade.
  • Gratuitous English: "Hai, stop, stop, stop", among many.
  • Hidden Depths: Jyuto is an avid enjoyer of arts and antiques. As showed in ARB, he is also into video games.'
  • Hollywood Police Driving Academy: Invoked. When Samatoki was bugging him over his war on drugs, an irritated Jyuto sped up the car to get him to stop.
  • Image Song:
  • Inconsistent Spelling: While his name is officially translated as "Jyuto", the preview for the BAYSIDE M.T.C album has it spelled as "Juto".
  • It's Personal: After finally getting a lead on Sekirei Hanmyo, a dealer who sold drugs to a driver who ran over his parents and to his police senior, Jyuto goes after him by himself, determined to bring him down by any means.
  • Moral Myopia: When confronting Nemu on Samatoki's arrest, he claimed that what she was doing was an abuse of power. That comes from a Dirty Cop, who isn't above bribes and blackmailing, when it's convinient for him.
  • More Dakka: His rap attack in the episode 1 of Rhyme Anima materializes as a hail of bullets.
  • The Paralyzer: His Rap Ability "Prison" immobilizes an opponent, which is visualized as prison bars, forcing them to skip a turn.
  • Parental Abandonment: Lost both of his parents to a drug addicted driver, which jumpstarted his police career and his own war on drugs.
  • Police Are Useless: A unique example, since Jyuto himself is a policeman. He usually takes Samatoki and Rio with him on drug busts, instead of his fellow police officers. He justifies this by saying that it allows him to claim all the credit and use it to move up the career ladder.
  • Precision F-Strike: "Motherfucker" in "Yokohama Walker".
  • Punny Name: Jyuto's MC name, 45 Rabbit. "45", in addition to being a reference to the Yokohama's area code, can be read as .45 (45 caliber) which corresponds with "jyu" character in his name, which means gun. "Rabbit" is also a reference to "to" in his name, which is a character for rabbit.
  • Red and Black and Evil All Over: Downplayed, as he's not exactly evil, but still has the looks nonetheless.
  • Smart People Wear Glasses: Jyuto is arguably the "brains" of MAD TRIGGER CREW, and wears glasses.
  • Tall, Dark, and Handsome: Although he is the shortest one in MTC, Jyuto's black suit and good looks fit the bill.
  • Turn in Your Badge: Gets briefly fired from the force by Misago Haebaru for snooping in Chuohku's private business, as he was close to uncover her ties to drug dealers. After Haebaru gets taken down, Nemu gets Jyuto his job back.

MC Name: Crazy M
Age: 28
Birthday: June 21 (Gemini)
Height: 191 cmnote
Rap Ability: Shelter
Likes: Cooking, order, discipline
Dislikes: Disorder, crowds
Least Favorite Food: Processed food
A former sergeant-ranking officer of the Japanese Navy until the military was disbanded by the Party of Words.
  • Arc Words: Survival.
  • Baritone of Strength: Rio's deep voice goes along with his muscular physique.
  • Barrier Warrior: His Rap Ability "Shelter" allows him to create a Beehive Barrier to protect his allies from an opponent's attack, at the cost of his turn.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Don't be mistaken by his gentle and peaceful demeanor (especially in contrast with Samatoki and Jyuto). He's a skilled rapper and a trained military officer, who never shows any mercy to his enemies.
  • The Big Guy: Taking his height and physique into account, he is definitely one for MTC.
  • Bizarre Taste in Food: Rio's choice for ingredients involves (but is not limited to): insects, lizards, spiders, frogs, bears, and bats.
  • Busman's Vocabulary: Despite the army being disbanded, he still talks and holds himself like a soldier.
  • But Not Too Foreign: Half-American from his father, half-Japanese from his mother.
  • Chef of Iron: Makes sense, considering that he hunts for most of his ingredients himself.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: Rio doesn't seem to be accustomed to civilian life, choosing to camp in the forest, instead of getting normal housing. He constantly talks like a soldier which sometimes comes across as outlandish. His choice of ingredients for his cooking doesn't help his case either.
  • Cold Sniper: Zig-zagged. In the flashback in the side B.B & M.T.C manga, during a hostage situation, Rio is ordered to snipe out a terrorist leader. However, he hesitates, concerned that he might hurt a hostage. With some encouragement from his commander, Rio successfully shoots the target in the shoulder, neutralizing him.
  • The Comically Serious: Rio's usual stoic attitude and a lack of casual civilian knowledge does produce its share of comical situations. In one of the ARB events, he questioned if abbreviations for "Merry Christmas" and "Happy New Year" ("Akemashite omedetou") were secret codes.
Rio: Merikuri...? Akeome...? Is this some kind of high-level code...?
  • Cordon Bleugh Chef: Played with. On account of Samatoki and Jyuto, Rio's cooking is actually tolerable, if not delicious. The problem mostly stems from his choice of ingredients, which fits his survival lifestyle. The presentation and a smell of his meals usually turn most people off, with the exception of Dice and Doppo. Amusingly, his cooking is so terrifying that it's censored in multiple media.
  • Crazy Survivalist: Zig-zagged. Rio is a survivalist and, well, has "Crazy" in his MC name, but he is a legitimate Nice Guy.
  • Defeat as Backstory: Rio was among the Special Extermination Operations Unit during the Party of Words' coup d'état, but ended up getting defeated. The unit's commander Ansho Iojaku ended up getting imprisoned and the whole military was disbanded, which affected Rio a lot.
  • The Dreaded: Played for laughs, as he's mostly dreaded by his own teammates because of his cooking. Every time Rio suggests preparing a meal for Samatoki and Jyuto, their hearts sink in terror (especially Jyuto's), but they eat his cooking anyway.
  • Expository Pronoun: Befitting his military background, he uses the very seldom-used pronoun "shoukan" (literally means "petty official"), which is a humble way for military or government officials to refer to themselves.
  • Fighting Your Friend:
    • When his old squadmate Kubiki planned a retaliation against Chuohku, Rio stood in their way, believing that Chuohku was too strong for them in their current state. Kubiki refused to back down, forcing Rio and the rest of MTC to take out Kubiki and his men.
    • Fought Dice in the 2nd Division Rap Battle.
  • Flechette Storm: One of his attacks in Rhyme Anima against Doppo and Hifumi materializes as a barrage of knives.
  • From Camouflage to Criminal: Downplayed. In comparison to Samatoki and Jyuto, Rio isn't much of a criminal, although he has no problem with illegally hacking into government databases.
  • Genius Bruiser: He is a skilled combatant and rapper, but also is The Strategist and a tech-savvy hacker.
  • Gentle Giant: He is among the tallest and strongest main characters, but he’s easily the most approachable member of his team.
  • Gratuitous English: Surpisingly averted. Although he's half-American, Samatoki and Jyuto display a gratuitous English quirk more frequently.
  • Image Song:
  • Inconsistent Spelling: His name is officially translated as "Rio" but can also be spelled as "Riou".
  • Lethal Chef: Played with in the Know Your Enemy drama track. After a sip of his lavender drink, Hifumi collapsed while gagging uncontrollably. However, Doppo had no problem with drinking it, to Samatoki and Jyuto's shock.
  • Manly Men Can Hunt: That's how he gets the ingredients for his meals.
  • Middle Name Basis: His old squadmates refer to him as "Mason".
  • Military Salute
  • My Greatest Failure: As depicted in the side B.B & M.T.C manga, he laments over his unit's defeat by the hands of Chuohku and his commander getting Court-martialed to save him.
  • More Dakka: Subjects Saburo to a hail of bullets from his speakers during their rap battle in Rhyme Anima.
  • Nom de Guerre: During his military service, Rio's callsign was "Solon".
    • Named After Somebody Famous: Solon is an ancient Athenian statesman, renowned for introducing significant legal and political reforms that laid the foundation for Athenian democracy.
  • Real Men Cook: A former sergeant-ranking naval officer with the hobby of cooking... albeit with the most bizarre choices of ingredients possible.
  • Real Men Hate Sugar: The extra from the side B.B & M.T.C manga states that Rio is not a big of fan of sweets.
  • Real Men Wear Pink: Invoked in the Mixed Up drama track. Ramuda makes pink-colored camouflage gear for him and Rio wears it without much complaints. Later on, he even allows Ramuda and Hifumi to give him a fashion makeover.
  • Rogue Soldier: This trope technically applies to him, since Rio is an enemy of the Party of Words and their regime.
  • Shot at Dawn: In Rhyme Anima, some of his attacks materialize as the squad of ghost soldiers, shooting up the opponent with their rifles. Uses it twice during the Division Rap Battle against Saburo and Hifumi.
  • Slasher Smile: Sports one on the MAD TRIGGER CREW VS Matenro album cover.
  • The Soft-Hearted Warrior: He is very civil and peaceful outside of battle.
  • The Stoic: He usually has a calm and serious temperament and is always seen with a flat expression on official artworks.
  • Strong and Skilled: He is a trained combatant, which combined with his muscular physique, makes him a dangerous opponent even outside of the rap battles. As seen in Rhyme Anima and Rule the Stage -track.1-, Rio is capable of dispatching a large group of enemies without his Hypnosis Mic.
  • Super Prototype: His Hypnosis Mic is a special military-grade prototype with effects that are stronger than of a usual mic.
  • Tastes Like Friendship: Became friends with Dice after finding him collapsed from hunger and feeding him.
    • In the second MTC drama track, Rio invited both Samatoki and Jyuto for a meal to strengthten their bonds. They actually appreciated the cooking... right before finding out what kind of ingredients he uses.
  • Threatening Mediator: Played for Laughs, as Rio's usual method to defuse the tension between Samatoki and Jyuto is to offer to cook something for them. While Rio simply thinks that their aggressiveness comes from hunger, Samatoki and Jyuto very much see it as a threat and instantly stop their bickering.
  • Token Good Teammate: He is the least morally ambigious member of MTC, in comparison to Samatoki and Jyuto. He's still not someone you'd want to mess around with, though.
  • Undying Loyalty: He never gave up on his mission to rescue his commander from Chuohku's maximum security prison.
