Seiran High's Exploration Club

    Homura Hinooka
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hinooka_homurasmaller18.png
See Homura in her Explorer's outfit
The main character of the story and a first year. Homura is the newest member of Seiran High's Exploration Club recruited by Takumi Touya at the behest of Mayo Misasagi after seeing her unusually high aptitude and potential for the club. While a little wary of the offer at first, she decides to join in an effort to see what she can do for herself.

She's known at Seiran High as the "cutest girl in her year" and has had numerous boyfriends in the past as well as many male admirers in and outside school since her middle school years. While she's lazy, carefree and a bit of an airhead at times, once a goal is shown right in front of her, Homura would stop at nothing to reach it.

She is assigned as a Beginner's Rank Investigator with the class of "Magician".

  • Alliterative Name: Homura Hinooka
  • All Men Are Perverts: Seems to be a believer of this given her previous experiences. Touya isn't exactly helping her change her perception of this in any way either.
  • Always Someone Better: Volume 2's second book reveals that she's this to Touya, having accomplished so much in so little time in the Exploration Club despite being a greenhorn who doesn't even know the basics of the basics.
  • Audience Surrogate: As the newest member of the Exploration Club, the readers learn more about the mysteries of Imaginary Earth and the functions of UNPIEP mainly through her.
  • Badass Adorable: Oh heck yes. She doesn't attract a dozen boys for no reason, after all. and being a main character from the Nasuverse, her being one is a standard thing. Homura's notable feats of badassery include her face-off against the very powerful and more experienced Subaru, a fight she won in, and her fight against a gigantic Nutellan shark in the second volume. Underwater.
  • Berserk Button: Hurting her friends or the people she knows around her is not a good idea. The sight of Subaru harming Suzuran right in front of her without hesitation also set her off enough to attack her.
  • Book Dumb: Not the smartest student around.
  • Brilliant, but Lazy: The story and pretty much plenty of characters point out that Homura's destined for greatness with the amount of potential and uncanny talent she possesses. The only thing standing in the way of that is her penchant for slacking off.
  • Challenge Seeker: Joined the Exploration Club primarily to see what she can do with herself.
  • Character Title: The titular Fire Girl and the main character of the series.
  • Covert Pervert: The first thing she wanted to look for when she first came over Touya's house? His porn stash.
  • Cowardly Lion: Has her moments of doubts and hesitation, but when her friends are in danger, she won't hesitate to pull out all stops just to save them.
  • Deadpan Snarker: A trait Touya notes her for. Here's a gem from when she, Misasagi, and Touya bathed together in the same bath:
(After Homura splashes Touya's face with hot water)
Touya: Hey, I wasn’t even looking!
  • Determinator: When Misasagi got kidnapped by Suzuran and her pack early on in 1-B, Homura immediately gave chase and actually managed to hold on to a wolf's back for a good while before she lost her grip on it after much struggling. Even after she was thrown off to the ground and after Touya's insistence to evacuate so they can get help on Earth, Homura refused on the grounds that their senpai might be in danger if they abandoned her and convinced Touya so they can stay and search for them, all the while knowing and being very aware of how very dangerous their opponents and terrains are.
  • Dismotivation: Described in the novels as someone who doesn't seek to aspire much in life.
  • The Ditz: Downplayed. She can be a bit air-headed and goofy from time to time, but she's also very self-aware and perceptive towards others, often raising an eyebrow towards the likes of Fujimori-sensei and her schemes.
  • Dude Magnet: She was declared the 'cutest girl' in their year by her high school peers. She also has the penchant to attract boys everywhere no matter what she does or where she goes thanks to her looks. Among the named characters mentioned in the story, she has Akiho flirting with her, Ishimi and Nagusa gaining an interest in her after she saves them in the climax of volume 2-A, and there have been hints that Touya (despite his crush on Misasagi), Otomaru, and even Ryou all have an interest in her.
  • Even the Girls Want Her: One of her female classmates and friends said she wouldn't mind seeing Homura in a kimono at all, and when other people in their vicinity overheard that Homura might try to compete in either the Yamato Nadeshiko contest or the swimsuit contest, the boys weren't the only ones who quickly flocked to her side. There's also Rokujizou's constant flirting with her whenever they meet.
  • Expy: Appearance-wise, she's a pink-haired Asuna. They're starkly different personality-wise however.
  • Fire Balls: Her favorite method of attack. In fact, she launches a whole barrage of them in different sizes in a game launched by Type-Moon during their 2013 April Fool's event. Poor Sacchin.
  • Genki Girl: Her bright enthusiasm and go-getter attitude are what keep her going no matter the circumstance. This helps her win over a lot of friends as the series goes on.
  • Hard Work Hardly Works: Subverted. Homura's skills are a result of the hard work Touya puts her through in the first few chapters, be it cooking boxed lunches, or simple endurance training, and she still needs help with the former.
  • Hates Being Alone: Her biggest fear is being left behind, all alone on her own.
  • Heroic BSoD: She got over it quickly, but her first visit to Nutella shattered her initial perception and pre-conceived notions of adventuring when she accidentally fell off a ridge on her first day (thankfully with zero injuries) and when she first saw something trying to steal stuff from their campsite. Alone. At night.
  • Hidden Depths: As Book Dumb as she might be, Homura seems to be a bit knowledgeable regarding western history, bringing up known historical figures like Vasco da Gama and Admiral Perry during her conversation with Fujimori-sensei in chapter 8.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Can sometimes unintentionally spout insensitive comments from time to time whenever her ego goes to her head and tongue.
  • Imagination-Based Superpower: How Homura's fire powers on Nutella truly work. She doesn't really need an incantation or have to think of a hexahedron-level pattern for her powers to work, all she has to do is to think up of clear, vivid imagery, something that her mind truly specializes in.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: She's a bit direct without intending to be and tends to let her mouth speak first before her head. Apart from that, she's otherwise a nice girl.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: Something seems to have happened to Homura during middle school that made her IE test grades drop from a spectacular 80:B to a meager 52:D, and when she tries to recall what went on during that time, she can't, which would explain why she couldn't remember Fujimori-sensei at all from back then until she brought it up. Whatever happened that time is implied to be the cause of her being completely immune to Subaru's puppet enchantment spell.
  • Leeroy Jenkins: Ran headfirst to Subaru's castle disregarding the danger she and her cohorts could pose on her, given her vast amounts of power and the difference in strength between the two of them in an attempt to save Touya by confronting her. Homura gets struck by a lightning spell conjured by Subaru in an attempt to kill her for her trouble, but she luckily survives thanks to Misasagi's water stone.
  • Lethal Chef: Touya described her food as poison.
  • Meaningful Name: Homura's given name means "flame". True enough, she specializes in fire magic, with fire balls being her most favored attack. In addition to this, she also has an undeterred, plucky personality that's difficult to douse even when situations and people bring her down. Her name's meaning is even the light novel's title.
  • Naïve Newcomer: She joins what's basically a special expedition club despite having no background in outdoor exploration whatsoever prior.
  • No-Sell: Was somehow completely unaffected by the same human puppet spell Subaru cast on Touya despite Subaru claiming that she cast the spell on both of them during her rampage on volume 1-B.
  • Not a Morning Person: Like Rin Tohsaka before her, though luckily for her she has a younger sister at home who helps get her up every morning. She eventually adjusts to waking up early every morning by herself thanks to Touya's training regimen, but that doesn't mean she has to like waking up early either.
  • Odd Friendship: With Orie.
  • Only Friend: Besides Kamikoma, who's more like an older sister to her rather than a close friend, she's this to Orie, being the only person in their school who'd actually bothered to befriend her at all despite her icy personality. While Orie can find Homura annoying and acts cold towards her most of the time, she also doesn't try to desperately get rid of her either, even joining her sometimes to hang out together.
  • Only Sane Man: Sometimes. Being the Audience Surrogate and main character, she should be this by default, considering that she holds a lampshade whenever she's exasperated with her fellow club members' (especially Fujimori-sensei) out of world antics, but she herself tends to be an airhead with a strange imagination from time to time.
  • Playing with Fire: Her main ability as a Magician for the Exploration Club.
  • Plucky Girl: A lazier example than most, but when she sees a goal she wants to fulfill right in front of her, Homura's the type to stop at nothing from trying to achieve that goal.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Again, with Orie.
  • Rose-Haired Sweetie: Has her blunt moments, but she's overall a nice, friendly, and polite person towards most of the people she knows or goes to meet. The best instance of this would be her willingness to help, out of sincere compassion, the lady handing out "missing" flyers at the train station trying find her lost child. in the first volume's first chapter. Probably contributed to her Dude Magnet factor and popularity in school.
  • School Idol: Hailed as "The cutest girl" in her year. Slightly downplayed in that she's a little Book Dumb, but that didn't stop her from being popular with the boys.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Resembles her youthful looking mom.
  • Troll: She has her moments. See Fujimori's entry below to see how much of one she is.
  • The Slacker: Played With. She hates having to do strenuous activities or even having to study from time to time. Though if you give her a goal she'll want to aspire towards, her enthusiasm will take over and she'll do her best to strive towards it. Even then, bouts of her laziness would still leak through there.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: With Touya, who she bickers with and comically hits most of the time whenever he runs his mouth on her, and with Fujimori-sensei who she teases and makes fun of from time to time.
  • Weight Woe: Implied. Homura got jumpy when she learned that the club building's scanners scanned people's weights too.

    Takumi Touya
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/touya_takumismaller.png
See Touya in his Explorer's outfit
A boy who's also in his first year like Homura and the first member of the Exploration Club introduced in the story. Touya is an athletic and talented kendo practitioner who goes out of his way to extend the Exploration Club's invitation to Homura at the start of the story. Like her, he's also a new member of the Exploration Club, but has joined sometime earlier prior to the start of the story.

Touya tends to be blunt from time to time but usually means well. He can also say unusual things with a straight face. He aims to surpass his father one day in kendo.

He is a Fifth Class Investigator with the class of "Light-weight Warrior".

  • Academic Athlete: While he's not an honors student, his grades are high enough to exact admiration from Homura. There's also the fact that he chose to take the regular entrance exam to Seiran High like any student would instead of using his kendo credentials as an easier way to enter the school as a sports scholar.
  • Alliterative Name: Takumi Touya.
  • Always Second Best: Feels this way towards his father who was a master kendo swordsman. This is the reason why he took up dual wielding kendo blades instead of just one.
  • Badasses Wear Bandanas: Wears a bandana to go with his Investigator outfits sans the glasses.
  • Bad Liar: As a consequence of the below trope.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: After Subaru captures him.
  • Brutal Honesty: Lacks some tact with his words.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Touya's older sister was killed in front of him when she protected him from a killer a few years ago in a case known as the Oosumi incident. He was only in grade school then.
  • Deadpan Snarker: He's got no filter on his mouth whenever he speaks.
  • The Ditz: Is eccentric enough for Homura to label him as a country bumpkin.
  • Dual Wielding: Dual wields kendo blades. Interestingly enough, he trained in this discipline as his sport in middle school, often competing in enough competitions to be well-known with some of his peers.
  • Heroes Prefer Swords: Kendo blades to be exact.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He's not afraid to crudely voice out his opinion of you, intentionally or not, but he ultimately means well, and will genuinely praise you if you did a good job.
  • Love at First Sight: Towards Misasagi-senpai, a fact he confesses to Homura while they were searching for their kidnapped senpai.
  • Missing Mom: According to Touya, his mom is "currently running away from home." He takes this in stride though, much to Homura's bewilderment.
  • Nice Guy: Despite his crudeness with his words, he's genuinely kind, helping out Homura if she needs it and even helping her train before she officially joins the Exploration Club.
  • Only Sane Man: Played with and shares this position with Homura. While he is exasperated at his fellow members' antics at times (especially Fujimori-sensei's), he's no stranger to eccentricity himself.
  • Last-Name Basis: Is primarily referred to by his surname only.
  • The Glasses Come Off: Non-dramatic example. He puts his glasses away whenever he's on Imaginary Earth. Explained in that the transport to Nutella as well as one of the planet's moons reconstitutes a human being's body whenever they travel there. In Touya's case, his eyesight becomes 20/20 perfect there, and so does not need glasses when exploring Nutella.
  • Would Hit a Girl: Played for Laughs. He smacks Homura on the head whenever she's being either silly or Innocently Insensitive. To his credit though, Homura actually hits him back when needed.

    Mayo Misasagi
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/misasagi_mayosmaller4.png
See Misasagi in her Explorer's outfit
A beautiful 3rd year and the Exploration Club's president in Seiran High. Prior to Touya and Homura joining, Misasagi was the sole member of the Exploration Club after Inari left. Shy but demure and mature, she has awed many students with her appearance, achievements and personality.

She is good friends with Sachi Kamikoma from Hiyoshi High and with Takara Rokujizou, the Student Council President. She was the one who called for Homura's recruitment at the start of the story.

She is a Third Class Investigator with the class of "Magical Warrior".

  • The Ace: She's beautiful, has high grades, excels in sports, is an excellent member of the Exploration Club, and even has qualifications to be an elite Ranger in the Japanese military.
  • Academic Athlete: Mentioned to be such in her official profile.
  • Alliterative Name: Mayo Misasagi.
  • Arranged Marriage: Her parents set her up to be Kazuma Tenryuu's fiancee, though it seems that she isn't overly enthused by the idea since his presence seems to annoy her a lot.
  • Badass Bookworm: Is well versed in both academics and military knowledge according to her profile. In fact, she took training to be a Ranger before she even joined the club!
  • Badass in Distress: Suzuran and her wolf pack take Misasagi hostage after she gets injured in a blast from a trap she set around the Seiran group's basecamp. Two chapters later, she escapes on her own (chain cuffs with links still attached and all still on her wrists), and arrives just in time to save Homura from Subaru. Mind you, she was still injured at the time.
  • Big Sister Instinct: Looks out for her underclassmen like an older sister would. She's especially sisterly towards Homura, a newbie who needs her guidance the most among the club members.
  • Can't Hold Her Liquor: When she unintentionally drinks fermented fruit juice boy does her usual shy and mature demeanor get thrown out the window.
  • Cool Big Sis: Towards her two kouhais Touya and Homura.
  • Expy: Her Explorer's/Investigator's outfit heavily resembles Asuna's ALO Undine avatar.
    • Also, an inverted example since Fire Girl came out first, but Misasagi heavily resembles an older looking Togo. Makes sense since both characters were designed by BUNBUN.
  • Even the Girls Want Her: Well, if Homura's swooning over her is anything...
  • Hime Cut: She has the hair style to match her mature and demure personality: length, even bangs and sidelocks. It no doubt contributes to her famed beauty as well.
  • Innocent Fanservice Girl: Doesn't mind involving Touya in all the things the group does together, whether that includes bathing in the same bath together or sleeping together in the same room or even bed, and is completely oblivious to the implications of a guy doing either of those together with two girls, much to Homura's exasperation.
  • Long Hair Is Feminine
  • Making a Splash: Her main elemental magic is water.
  • Power Dyes Your Hair: As a Magical Warrior, her hair is blue instead of her natural black, thanks to the effects of being there on Nutella.
  • Raven Hair, Ivory Skin
  • Shrinking Violet: She's bashful sometimes, though her maturity masks that perfectly.
  • So Proud of You: Towards Homura after she won the secret race during volume 2-A.
  • Statuesque Stunner: A tall beauty, she is.
  • Stutter Stop: When on Earth, Misasagi's speech pattern is loaded to the brim with pauses in-between phrases, probably due to her Shrinking Violet nature or some other reason. But when she's on Nutella, she's able to speak in full sentences without pausing to stammer. Lampshaded by Homura.
  • Supreme Chef: Bakes really good apple pies.
  • The Leader: The club president and lone senior of the Exploration Club.
  • Verbal Tic: Her way of speaking is riddled with unusual pauses in between words. It disappears when she's on Nutella though.
  • Water Is Womanly: She is a third-year famed for her breathtaking beauty and has a demure maturity befitting a Yamato Nadeshiko to go along with her water magic.
  • We Used to Be Friends: With Inari, after an incident that left Inari hospitalized for at least one school semester broke their friendship apart.
  • World's Most Beautiful Woman: Homura describes her as breathtakingly beautiful even in the darkness when she first met her, and was so amazed at her beauty that she kept staring at her without saying a word for a more than a minute.
  • Yamato Nadeshiko: She demure, graceful, beautiful, and dutiful to her family, traits that are found in a classic Japanese beaut.

    Ameno Fujimori
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ameno.png

Another new recruit and fellow new member of Seiran's Exploration Club. She is Fujimori-sensei's "adopted" family member. While she appears to be just a normal student with a few quirks and a unique appearance, Ameno, is in fact, a Golem, or a humanoid robot whose consciousness was created from a special stone found on Nutella and is currently being observed by Seiran's UNPIEP members, particularly Fujimori-sensei.

She is a Beginner's Rank Investigator with the class of "Thief".

  • Affectionate Nickname: "Ame-chan".
  • Artificial Human: Specifically, she's a Golem.
  • The Baby of the Bunch: With her age being somewhere between 3-10 years old, she's this by default.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: She's a bit off.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: Appears early on in Vol 1-A and is mentioned a couple of times, but doesn't get to interact with the characters or get formally introduced until Part B.
  • Empty Shell: What she was originally before she started gaining a personality of her own.
  • Kaleidoscope Eyes: A hint as to what she really is.
  • Gamer Chick: Is usually seen playing video games when she's not doing any club-related activities with her friends.
  • Genki Girl
  • Ms. Exposition: Is usually responsible for explaining the technicalities and sci-fi technobabble in the series.
  • New Transfer Student: She transfers to Touya's class in between Volumes 1 and 2.
  • Non-Uniform Uniform: Wears a blue and white jacket over her school uniform.
  • Ridiculously Human Robot: She's a cybernetic android with a soul stone attached to her that serves as her brain and soul.
  • What Measure Is a Non-Human?: While the Exploration Club members treat her like a normal person, Subaru only sees her as a living puppet. She's not even allowed to sleep with her friends at the castle and is ordered by Subaru to only stay the stables. Despite her friends' protests however, Ameno is fine with it.
  • Younger Than They Look: While the stone that acts as her "soul" was found ten years ago, her mechanical body had only been built three years ago, effectively making her actual age somewhere between three to ten years old.

    Sunao Inari

A student who is currently in her second year. She was formerly a member of Seiran's Exploration Club alongside Misasagi until an incident in the past prior to Homura and Touya joining caused her to quit. By the time Homura and Touya try to get her back to the Exploration Club, she had been recovering in rehabilitation for more than half a year before resuming her studies.

  • Big Eater: Has a humongous appetite though even she has her limits when it comes to eating.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: She gets mentioned by Misasagi as early as Volume 1A as the member who quit the Exploration Club even though she doesn't make an appearance or have a prominent role until Volume 2.
  • A Dog Named "Dog": Though she gave him to the zoo after a couple of years of taking care of him, Inari had a Polar Bear for a pet named Pole (though everyone calls him her "little brother") and still visits and plays with him in the zoo on a periodic basis.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Has a tendency to be gruff and aloof, but is actually pretty nice and soft underneath all that.
  • Irony: For someone who loves animals and was once the Exploration Club's resident animal expert, she has an allergy to animal fur. She tries to deny it by saying she's allergic to the pollen in the air when she, Homura, and Touya go to the zoo, but neither of them were even the least bit fooled by such an obvious lie.
  • Little Bit Beastly: Gains fox ears and a tail whenever she travels to Nutella.
  • Meaningful Name: "Inari" is the name of a fox deity. Guess what kind of modifications her body goes through whenever she's on Nutella?
  • We Used to Be Friends: With Misasagi, after an incident during an expedition went wrong and their friendship turned sour.

    Chiayu Fujimori
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fujimori.png
The Exploration Club's adviser in Seiran High. She also happens to be Homura's Modern Japanese teacher.
  • Abusive Parents: Played for Laughs with regards to her relationship with Ameno.
  • Apathetic Teacher: Subverted. While she initially comes off as somewhat uncaring towards what might happen to her students while they're on Nutella (Homura's first trip there being the primary example), later chapters prove that she does show lots of concern towards them as an adviser should. When Misasagi was injured and had to be bedridden for a while, Fujimori decided to watch over her while she recovered.
  • Cool Teacher
  • Embarrassing First Name: Chiayu, at least whenever students call her that.
  • In-Series Nickname: Mori-chan-sensei. She doesn't seem to appreciate this nickname that much either.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Was initially opposed to Homura joining the Exploration Club, despite her unusually high aptitude for it, just because Homura completely forgot about her first meeting with her when Homura was still a middle school student. The heart of gold part comes in when Homura successfully meets her conditions to join the club and warmly welcomes her as its member, even holding up her own end of the deal of convincing Homura's parents (specifically her father) to allow her to join the club.
  • Running Gag: Her lovelife is something Homura never fails to bring up every time a topic related to it comes up out of the blue.
Homura: (after thinking Ameno is a possible daughter of Fujimori): "I-i-is she your illegitimate child!?"
  • She Cleans Up Nicely: Looks decent in a formal teacher's suit. Knowing Homura and her teacher-student relationship with Fujimori-sensei, she acknowledges this, but also takes the time to take a jab at her while she's at it:
Homura: Sensei...are you going out job hunting?
Fujimori-sensei: Go ahead and laugh if you want.
Homura: No, no, you look wonderful. It looks cute on you. I really admire you.
Fujimori-sensei: [exasperated] I’m begging you, please just laugh already.
Homura: [enthusiastically] If you always taught lessons looking like that, I wouldn’t doze off in class!
  • The Slacker: Like Homura, except she's a teacher who takes it to a whole different level. She's completely averse to work and is content just lounging around a sofa and napping.
  • Womanchild: Played for Laughs Not a single interaction with her would go by without Homura and Touya lampshading that she is one heck of an irresponsible adult.
(Homura and Touya) made eye contact and mentally recorded to themselves: ‘Fujimori-sensei requires special attention when she hangs bait in front of our noses.’

Other Students from Seiran High

    Orie Kujou
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kujou.png

Homura's classmate since middle school up to the present day. She's an aloof individual who's currently the sole member of the Going-Home Club after Homura joins the Exploration Club.

  • Elegant Classical Musician: Is noted to be a really good violinist, as seen when Homura sees her perform onstage.
  • Ice Queen: She's completely frosty towards people and doesn't seem to care at all that she's almost friendless.
  • Loners Are Freaks: Scares her classmates because of her demeanor and solitary figure. Homura doesn't think so however and goes out of her way to befriend her anyway.
  • Perpetual Frowner: Barely changes her expression at all.
  • The Stoic: Pretty much. Almost nothing interests or fazes her, though some of Homura's reactions would give her pause sometimes.
  • When She Smiles: She smiles warmly for the first time after performing in a jazz concert.

    Takara Rokujizou
The current Student Council President of Seiran High and a close friend of Misasagi's.
  • The Gadfly: Kurama's reaction to her when she spots her spying on her conversation with Homura and Touya and Rokujizou's subsequent teasing her later on prove that she's this.
  • Large Ham: Expect her to chew the scenery whenever she appears.
  • Student Council President: A hammy one at that.

    Yamashina
The Student Council's accountant.

    Kifune Kurama
A member of the student council and Touya's classmate. She informs Homura and Touya of Inari's return to school.
  • Alliterative Name: Kifune Kurama.
  • Beleaguered Assistant: Not to Yamashina's extent, but she's also one to Rokujizou.
  • Servile Snarker: As her junior and a member under her student council term, she's one to Rokujizou, and can be sarcastically upfront with her comments about her without changing her demeanor in the slightest. Seeing as who Rokujizou is, it's understandable that Kurama is this.

Hiyoshizaka High's Exploration Club

    Sachi Kamikoma
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kamikoma.png

The president of Hiyoshi High's Exploration Club and is currently in her third year. Is a childhood friend of Kujou's and a close friend of Misasagi's.

She, like Misasagi, is a Third Class Investigator with the class of "Bard".

  • A-Cup Angst: Implied.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Misasagi calls her Sa-chan while Homura calls her Koma-senpai.
  • Big Sister Instinct: Towards Orie, having known her for so long.
  • Childhood Friends: With Kujou. She also serves as her Cool Big Sis too.
  • Cool Big Sis: To Orie Kujou, her childhood friend. She looks out for her like a big sister usually would and would dote on her at times. This is extended to Homura and Sachi's other underclassmen as well.
  • The Dreaded: The moment the boys who were hitting on Homura realize who Kamikoma was, their immediate response was to flee.
  • Face of a Thug: With her tomboyish appearance and piercings, you'd think she's some sort of delinquent.
  • Foil: To Misasagi, as the resident presidents and seniors of their respective Exploration Clubs. While Misasagi is usually meek and soft-spoken, Kamikoma is loud and much more outspoken. Whereas Misasagi is tall and demure, Kamikoma is short and tomboyish. Even their Investigator's outfits' color schemes reflect this: Misasagi's is white and blue, while Kamikoma's is black and red.
  • Good Old Fisticuffs: Specializes in hand-to-hand combat.
  • Huge Guy, Tiny Girl: With Taichi Taga, her underclassman.
  • Ship Tease: With her underclassman, Taga.

    Taichi Taga
The vice president of Hiyoshizaka High's Exploration Club. He is currently in his second year.

He is a Third Class Investigator with the class of "Berserker".

  • Alliterative Name
  • Beware the Quiet Ones: He's a passive, quiet and nice person overall but his gigantic size isn't just for show. When put in Berserker Mode, his strength and speed is multiplied greatly, but at the cost of going on an Unstoppable Rage mode for a period of time. Only Kamikoma can soothe and command him while in this mode.
  • The Big Guy: He's huge for a high schooler.
  • The Berserker: It's his class after all. Also pretty surprising considering his status as a relatively quiet person.
  • Eyes Always Shut: He only opens them when in Berserk Mode.
  • Face of a Thug: Homura admits that she wouldn't want to encounter someone with his face and build in an isolated alleyway.
  • Gentle Giant: He's pretty big for his age, though he's fairly benevolent overall unless he's in Berserk Mode.
  • Huge Guy, Tiny Girl: With his senpai, Sachi Kamikoma.
  • Little Bit Beastly: Gains wolf-like features on Nutella.
  • The Quiet One: Doesn't usually speak much, and even when he does, only utters a few words per sentence.
  • Ship Tease: With Kamikoma.
  • Younger Than They Look: With his large build and gruff appearance, you wouldn't believe for a second that he's only in his second year of high school.

    Akiho Saho
A first year and one of the members of Hiyoshizaka High's Exploration Club. He befriends Homura sometime between the end of the first volume and before the beginning of the second one and is introduced as a friend she's particularly close with but not romantically (much to his disappointment). Has a reputation for being flirty with girls.
  • Casanova Wannabe: Constantly flirts with any girl he comes across with, though he seems particularly drawn to Homura the most and is usually seen flirting with her more. Surprisingly, Homura doesn't seem to mind all that much and seems to like him fine as a friend.
  • Little Bit Beastly: Gains cat-like features while on Nutella.
  • Speaks Fluent Animal: Courtesy of his class and his field, he can speak and understand what animals are saying.
  • Too Dumb to Live: Peeping on a super-powered Nutellan with a whole slew of powerful spells and incantations under her sleeve while she was bathing isn't exactly a good idea. Akiho is extremely lucky that Subaru's chill about the whole thing and is on their side now.

    Yuri Kanae
Akiho's fellow first year at Hiyoshizaka High. Is mostly quiet and stoic in general but tends to open up more to her childhood friend, Ryou.
  • The Aloner: Like Kujou, she prefers being and working alone.
  • Aloof Dark-Haired Girl: Has dark hair and is distant towards everyone barring Ryou.
  • Childhood Friends: With Ryou. There are small hints that she may want to be more than this with him however.
  • The Quiet One: She's a girl of few words and is likelier to ignore you than answer back when called.
  • Sleepyhead: She first appears taking a nap during the assembly at the earlier chapters of volume 2-A, only to get a rude wake-up call via coffee being splashed all over her courtesy of Ryou. And when she participates in the race with her fellow Exploration Club members later on, she expresses disinterest and would rather just take a nap on Ryou's lap.
  • The Stoic: Keeps up a quiet and distant demeanor to everyone she talks to, all of which you can count on one hand in her first appearance.

    Ryou Hayase
A second year and a member of Hiyoshizaka High's Exploration Club. A childhood friend of Yuri's who has a mischievous and playful nature hidden underneath his cool expression.
  • Childhood Friends: With Yuri.
  • Establishing Character Moment: He introduces himself in the story and to Homura by gently shushing her to make it seem like he's telling Homura not to wake Yuri up from her nap...only to suddenly splash Yuri with (already cold) coffee while making it look like it was Homura who did it.
  • The Gadfly: He has a tendency to tease people he knows. Homura provides an easy target for him to lay his gadfly tendencies on.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He's a playful prankster, but he does care a lot for Yuri. His conversation with Homura in the final chapter of 2-A also shows that there's more to him than he lets on underneath his mischievous persona.

Kanazawa Asano High

    Genya Otomaru

Tomakomai Denpa High

    Shizune Himekawa
A first year at Tomakomai Denpa High and currently its only female member. She's laid back and chill, but is annoyed with her status as the sole female member of her school's Exploration Club, wishing more girls would join. She was online chat buddies with Touya together with Genya Otomaru from Kanazawa Asano High and instantly befriends Homura upon first meeting her.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: Downplayed, but she's a little odd.
  • Large Ham: She's more subdued about it compared to Rokujizou, but she has a flair for the dramatic whenever her status as the lone female member of her school's Exploration Club is brought up.
  • Smurfette Principle: She's currently the first and only female member of Tomokomai's Exploration Club, something that annoys her since she keeps getting harassed by some of the male members. She puts up with it rather well though.

Osaka Prefectural School Nagumo High

    Kazuma Tenryuu

    Misaki Oozore
The Vice President of Osaka Prefectural Nagumo High's Exploration Club and a third year. He's a well-known name among the Exploration Clubs in Japan, referring to him as "The Wizard" for his magic proficiency. He reins in Tenryuu whenever he get a little too rowdy for comfort.
  • The Ace: Mature, calm, intelligent, reliable, and a man of many talents. It's no wonder a lot of people look up to him.
  • Gender-Blender Name: His first name, Misaki, is typically given to girls.
  • Hypercompetent Sidekick: To Tenryuu. Not that Tenryuu's incompetent or anything but he can be irresponsible every now and then.
  • Red Baron: The Exploration Clubs from all over the nation know him as "The Wizard" for his proficiency in magic.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Ice cream.

    Fuyu Nagashino
A first year.

    Sae Nanakubo
An abrasive 2nd year from Nagumo High.
  • Embarrassing Nickname: To her, it's Nana.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Is downright rude and abrasive and overall unfriendly to nearly everyone who talks to her, but isn't above thanking Homura for successfully getting Inari to participate in the secret event she invited her to that's held in Nutella.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: With Inari.

Denizens of Imaginary Earth

    Subaru: Princess of the Pleiades
A mysterious witch Homura and co. encounter on Nutella.
  • Antiquated Linguistics: Speaks in an archaic and very formal Japanese dialect. Translators appropriately match it with a bit of Ye Olde Butcherede Englishe.
  • Anti-Villain: Thanks to the Spirit Stone she possessed warping her personality, Subaru's actions and attitude towards everyone became very temperamental and malicious as a result, since normally, according to Suzuran, Subaru would never act in that manner and was always a kind person albeit a little strange at times.
  • The Atoner: For her actions of endangering the Seiran crew in volume 1, she agrees to let the Exploration Club use her castle as a temporary base camp and a base of operations for their next journey. She even personally apologizes to Touya and Homura for turning Touya into a mindless puppet back then and promises to teach Homura Mathematica, a.k.a., magic, as her form of atonement towards them.
  • Berserk Button: She hates grave robbers with a passion. Mistaking Homura and Touya for them is what made her attack them in the first place.
  • Big Bad: Of Vol 1.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: Her true personality.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: She went on a rampage at one point before the series started which resulted in the abandoned ruins Homura and co found in volume 1. Why she did so is unclear but she's clearly ashamed of it in the present.
  • Famous Ancestor: She's actually related to one. Specifically, she's is, and is related to the Misasagi family.
  • Fantastic Racism: Towards Ameno, as she doesn't see her as a living being equal to humans and instead, sees her as a mere puppet, despite her sentience.
  • Half-Human Hybrid: The offspring of an Earthling man and a Nutellan woman.
  • Heel–Face Turn: After Homura defeats her during the climax of 1-B.
  • Kick the Dog: She did a lot of it in Vol 1-B. Her primary moments being blasting Homura in the chest with a powerful lightning spell she conjured up for speaking out against her for taking Touya from them, coming really close to killing her, and an almost literal kick the dog moment afterwards was blasting Suzuran with another spell when she decides to join Homura and co.
  • Long-Lost Relative: She is considered to be one to Mayo Misasagi, a descendant of her uncle's, if you cut away all the centuries that have passed on Earth.
  • Mama Bear: Was Suzuran's surrogate mother ever since Suzuran was still an infant. Threatening her, or threatening to take Suzuran away from her guarantees you a lightning blast strong enough to reduce you to ashes.
  • Mood-Swinger: She goes from being murderously angry, but calm in the first instance, then suddenly whimsical and cheery the next, and then rage-filled and hateful immediately after in rapid succession. The Spirit Stone she always held may be at fault here for changing her mood so often.
  • Mukokuseki: A woman hailing previously from the land of Edo (read: ancient Japan) somehow has blonde hair.
  • Older Than They Look: Despite looking like, at most, a young woman in her mid to late twenties Subaru was formerly a citizen of ancient Edo. Based on this piece of info, she should be around more than a few centuries old as of the story's time.
  • Parental Substitute: To Suzuran. Which makes her Kick the Dog moment above despicable enough to piss off Homura.
  • Pet the Dog: After Homura beats her into submission and frees her from the stone's control, she willingly allows the Seiran crew to use her castle as a basecamp in the meantime while they fix their original one after Suzuran and her pack destroyed it earlier.

    Suzuran Real name: Erika Ono
A young kimono-wearing wolf girl the Exploration Club members encounter during their venture in Nutella. She is aggressive towards Homura and her company for stepping foot on Nutella.
  • Changeling Tale: She was kidnapped during infancy on Earth and was somehow whisked away to Nutella where Subaru and Yukiwarimaru raised her for most of her life.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: She is the lost child of the woman who was passing "missing" flyers on the station Homura goes to.
  • Happily Adopted: By Subaru and Yukiwarimaru. She loves both dearly as if they were her real family and they love her just as much back.
  • Wild Child: Is seen as one in her first appearance, as she is always together with her wolf family.
  • Troubling Unchildlike Behavior: Setting dangerous, explosive traps with the intent to incapacitate, having her wolf family attack who she perceives as intruders, and kidnapping one of said intruders aren't exactly standard behavior for a kid like her.
  • Younger Than They Look: She's around twelve in Nutella, but she's only supposed to be around five years old in Earth years.

    Yukiwarimaru
A gigantic white wolf who dutifully follows Subaru, her master. She was the one who found Suzuran in the forest as an infant.
  • Alternate Character Reading: Her name can also be read as "Sekkachimaru", a name Suzuran always refers to her as, much to Yukiwarimaru's chagrin.
  • Parental Substitute: Suzuran also considers Yukiwarimaru her mother besides Suzuran for also raising her since infancy.

    Hatsuyuki

    Genshiko

    Tsuyu Hinooka
